KRITZERLAND 131

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us a really fun Kritzerland 131. The kids all did great – a few lyric fumfers along the way due to nervousness, but they forged ahead, and no one really knew unless you knew the song. The only disappointment, really, was that there were fourteen no-shows. The deal I have with the parents is they guarantee they can bring eight people. Several had six instead of eight and a few even had less because of the no-shows. There were still eighty people, but there should have been 100. So, instead of actually making a few bucks I barely broke even. The kid show is usually the only show where we actually make a few bucks. Anyway, I lasted the show, although I myself was fumfering a lot because the 14pt size is no longer working. So, I’m going to revert to what I did for the online shows – 18pt with each commentary on a separate page. A lot of the humor went over the heads of the parents and guests, but thankfully we had a few theater people and they laughed at all that stuff. So, we opened with Born to Entertain from Ruthless! Then Hurry, It’s Lovely Up Here, then Out Here on My Own from Fame, then Baby, You Can Count on Me from Bring Back Birdie, 44 Sunsets from The Little Prince, Smile from Smile, Starfish from La Strada, then Imaginary Friend from the Nora Ephron play, then two of my songs, Nerd and My Life as a Musical Comedy from Sami, then Mama’s Talkin’ Soft, Times Like This, What More Do I Need? from Saturday Night, Wrapped in a Ribbon and Tied With a Bow from Street Scene, Together, Wherever We Go, Santa Fe from Newsies, Kids (with a surprise guest, Barry Pearl, who took over the role of Randolph, Paul Lynde’s son on Broadway, then two kids came on and did my parody lyric, then You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile, then Maybe/Tomorrow (you’ll note several Charles Strouse songs – our little tribute), The Wizard and I, and then our closer, The Life I Never Led from Sister Act.

The young folks were, in show order: Kayla Anjali, Alexa Margolis, Angelina Pendelton-Mendez, Aaron Chao, Ava Madison Gray, Lochlan McGowan, Erin Tardibuono, Erin Choi, Brennan Esguerra, Lila Aminlari, Rae Martinez, Marissa Margolis.

I’m not sure I can use that many kids again – the show ran a little long for my taste, but the audience loved it and loved the kids and that’s all it’s about, really. Richard Allen did a fine job at the piano.

After, I waited around for the check, then came right home. I was starving, having only had a little Caesar salad, so I ordered a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich and coleslaw from House of Pies. Should be here shortly. Prior to all that, I got eight hours of sleep, answered e-mails, didn’t proof at all because I didn’t want to tax my eyeballs, I relaxed and rested my voice, shaved and showered, moseyed on over to the club, had a soundcheck, ate the salad, and the rest you know.

Today, I’ll be up by eleven at the latest, I’ll send Muse Margaret the revised pages that contain the big lift, then I’ll try to finish proofing so I can get the book to the proofers. I did hear back from one of the two folks I want to blurb the book and it was a go, so now I’ll wait another day or two for the other one, but for as long as I’ve known him, he’s kind of a jerk unless it benefits him. You’d certainly know his name and it certainly would be good to have his blurb, but I’m not waiting around. I have one other great idea that I’ll try tomorrow. Then I have a lunch meeting, then it’s right back to proofing until I’m done.

Tomorrow, I begin choosing songs for the July Kritzerland, I have a late afternoon celebratory meal, then I really need to relax over the weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must to the things I do, I must, for example, be up by eleven at the latest, send Muse Margaret revised pages, proof, have a lunch meeting, finish proofing, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to have had a fun Kritzerland 131.
