THE TONY AWARDS CRASH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we didn’t exactly have a Tony Awards Bash, did we? It was more like a Tony Awards Crash. Few in attendance and few watching and that includes my very own self because there were no free trials to be had. But truth be told, the glory days of our Oscar and Tony partays are long gone. Both hold the record of the biggest posting days we’ve ever had. For me, the problem is I don’t like most of the shows they do now, and I especially don’t like the audiences these days. When they moved the Tonys to Radio City Music Hall they ruined them – not only the venue, but opening it up to the kiddies so they could come and scream and whoop and holler for “their” shows. Yes, there are occasionally shows I can at least sit through, but they are few and far between and these days even those are marred by the audiences. Even the audience for straight plays seems to have gone that way, at least watching Good Night and Good Luck it seemed that way to me. Where once we had over 2,000 posts, we barely have 150. As Martha and George would say courtesy of Mr. Albee – sad, sad, sad. I, for example, spent the entirety of the Tony broadcast writing, getting nine pages done and my intention is to do a few more before bedtime, whenever that might be. I keep getting sucked into these Penn and Teller “Fool Us” clips. Some of the tricks are really mind boggling, especially the ones that fool them. It really makes me want to visit the Magic Castle again and I may just do that, since I can get in for free. I’ve never taken advantage of that, and I haven’t been there since the 1970s, when I used to go quite often. I know they have great food there, so an evening of magic and food seems like a fine night out. And I don’t care who knows it. Otherwise, it wasn’t much of a Sunday. I got eight and a half hours of very good sleep, arising at noon-thirty – yes, I was up until four-thirty watching those magic things. I’d pre-ordered food using my second of three 40% coupons on UberEats and had Stanley’s – my beloved garlic chicken pasta with broccoli, red onions, and cashews. It was excellent as it always has been. After that, I was so full that I needed to sit on the couch like so much fish, which I did, instantly dozing off for an hour.

Once up, I read the stuff about what won on the pre-broadcast awards, and I find it unbelievably bad form to give out major awards on that pre-broadcast. It should not be allowed. I has spoken.

Then I wrote the nine pages, watched a few videos, and here we are.

Today, I’ll try to be up by ten or so, I’ll make some telephonic calls, I’ll futz and finesse, I’ll write new pages, I’ll make more telephonic calls, I’ll use the last of my forty percent off coupons if I can find something that sounds good, I’ll eat, I’ll take a stab at the show order, I’ll write more pages and by mid-week I’m hoping to send Muse Margaret another batch of pages. Then I can watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of the same, meetings and meals, writing commentary, seeing a play and doing whatever needs doing.

Well dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by ten or so, make telephonic calls, futz and finesse, write new pages, make more calls, eat, take a stab at a show order, write more pages, then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Why do YOU think our Oscar and Tony Bashes have become so anemic? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, sorry that our bash has turned into a crash.
