POPPING PILLS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, not listening to music… hold on… let me start over. Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, listening to music to a movie I began watching an hour ago – a favorite film composer of mine did the beautiful score – Stanley Myers – to a film I’d never even heard of entitled Cold Heaven, sold as a terrifying thriller directed by Nicolas Roeg, who is not exactly a director known for terrifying thrillers. I’m enjoying the movie so far and the score is stunning. The movie is based on a novel by a writer I’m fond of named Brian Moore, who also wrote the screenplay to Alfred Hitchcock’s Torn Curtain. Many of Moore’s novels were made into films and Graham Greene called Moore his favorite living novelist back in the day when Moore was living. I had no idea that the score had been release on CD by Intrada and thankfully it’s on the Tube of You, which is how I’m listening to it and of course, I’ll grab it after I finish these here notes. I’ll have more to say about the film when I’ve finished it. I also watched a low-budget bottom of the bill programmer from 1961 entitled The Boy Who Caught a Crook, with a no-name cast. It played as second feature to the wide release of The Young Doctors. It’s not very good, but I always enjoy these kinds of suspense movies involving a kid put in a precarious position. It takes place in the Bunker Hill section of L.A., which was at the time this filmed, just starting to be torn down in its entirety with no trace of its existence left. Directed by the very ordinary Edward L. Cahn. Prior to all that, I got seven hours of sleep, got up, had an English muffin and took pill one. Then I did more catching up, had a telephonic conversation, then at two I made some bow tie pasta with butter, ground beef, onions, and parmesan cheese sprinkled all over it. It was quite tasty, and I didn’t make that much pasta, so while it was filling it didn’t make me feel like I was going to explode. After finishing, I took pill two. Then I did more catching up and then watched The Boy Who Caught a Crook, which only runs about seventy-two minutes. Then I had some cantaloupe, crackers, a couple of slices of baby Swiss cheese, and a couple of small biscotti and took pill three. Then I began watching Cold Heaven and then it was time to write these here notes, which, as you might have noticed, is what I’ve been doing.

Today, I’ll be up by ten at the latest, I’ll have my English muffin, do whatever needs doing, I’m hoping I see the galley and covers for approval – if I don’t have them by tomorrow, I’ll have to write another strong e-mail, which I’d rather not do, but I’ve been clear from the start that they weren’t to drag their feet on this one. I’ll have tuna sandwiches for lunch, my third meal from what I got at the market the other day, and then I can watch, listen, and relax.

The rest of the week is more of that, I’ll probably see a play at some point on the weekend, and if I’ve approved galley and covers then test books should be on their way to me at that point.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up by ten at the latest, have my English muffin, do whatever needs doing, hope I see the galley and covers for approval, have tuna sandwiches, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as I keep up the daily regime of popping pills.
