THE LAST OF THE GUNK

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’m hopefully hoping that the last of the gunk is on its way out of my person – if true, I think my voice will then get stronger. That would be VERY welcome so that I don’t have to sit here like so much fish and be nervous about making it through the Kritzerland show. Oh, and here’s the flyer.

Isn’t that a lovely flyer? What else can I tell you? Not much coughing yesterday and eight and a half hours of sleep but not consecutive, as I was up early for ninety minutes. I answered e-mails, then ordered from nearby Antonio’s – the pasta with chicken in pink sauce. It arrived fifteen minutes later – it’s not great but at least it tastes like food, and that’s a good thing given the crap I’ve been eating lately. The afternoon is hazy, although I did turn the big boy vaporizer on and breathed in about ten minues of steam. Don’t know if that helped or not. I had no telephonic conversations at all, I did not really speak at all other than to see if any voice was there, which there was – not full strength by any means, but there. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish and promptly fell asleep, but only for about twenty minutes. Then I couldn’t find anything that interested me on Prime or Max, so instead I went to the Tube of You and my favorites list, where there’s a bunch of stuff. I’ve saved but never watched or, in the case of music, listened to. So, I watched some ballet stuff – Balanchine and Robbins – some tap dancing videos, some Peter Gennaro videos, listened to a little Menotti, and that all took up about four hours of viewing. Then I had some chocolate licorice and a couple of Red Vines for a snack. After that, it was time to write these here notes, which, in case you haven’t noticed, is what I’ve been doing.

I wish I had more to report, but once I’m past this crud I’ll have plenty to report and report I will. I’m hoping this will be the last night to do Ny-Quil, but we’ll have to see how I sleep and how I feel today. But I’m bored of it, frankly, although it does knock me out. I did spend some time in the book room admiring my newly-returned copy of Badge of Evil and I noticed that I have ten other books by that author – Whit Masterson – who is actually two writers – Bob Wade and H. Bill Miller. They also wrote a lot of paperback originals under the name Wade Miller. Interestingly, Miller died at in 1961 at the age of forty-one, but Wade wrote quite a few more books under the Whit Masterson moniker and under his own name. I thought Badge of Evil was the only book by them turned into a film, but that is incorrect – prior to Touch of Evil, they had A Cry in the Night from the novel All Through the Night, then The Yellow Canary from the novel Evil Come, Evil Go, Warning Shot from the novel 711 – Officer Needs Help, and a TV movie, The Death of Me Yet. I’ve seen Warning Shot and of course Touch of Evil, but I want to seek out the others now. Oh, and I did watch part one of a two-part Police Story that had a very good cast – Glenn Ford, James Farentino, Christopher Connelly, and my beloved Leslie Parrish. Very dated show, obviously. Mostly shot downtown LA – always fun to see the Music Center when it was the only building in that area – it’s all empty – that wouldn’t change for a few years. And here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’m hoping I feel even better than yesterday, hoping that the last of the gunk will be gone soon and especially hoping my voice gets stronger. Otherwise, I have no plans other than to do what I’ve been doing – rest and do whatever needs doing. I’m sure I’ll eat something amusing at some point and at some point I’m sure I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, I’m hoping the galley will arrive so I can give that a final once-over, get them whatever fixes are necessary, and then get the final galley before it all is on its way to the publisher. Exciting. I’m still playing with the show order and can’t start the commentary till I have it done, so that will be done soon, I hope, I’m praying for another modern major miracle, and praying tht I’m completely over this crud no later than Tuesday and I do mean all of it. Thursday is our first Kritzerland rehearsal, Saturday our second, stumble-through on Tuesday, and then sound check and show on Wednesday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, hope I feel even better than yesterday, hope that the last of the gunk will be gone soon and especially hope that my voice gets stronger, rest, do whatever needs doing, eat, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovley postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that the last of the gunk is gone sooner than later.
