GREAT CAESER’S GHOST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am sitting here like so much fish, traversing the symphonies of Edward Rubbra – on symphony two right now – he’s quite a composer – even though they’re very different, I’d kind of put him in the William Alwyn category or even the category of the Vaughan Williams of the fourth and sixth symphonies, his most dramatic works. And now it’s symphony number three, which, so far, is my fave of the first three, but I’m only in the first movement. Otherwise, I did finish the little fifty-minute thing on Walter Matthau – not sure what it was done for, but since it’s all Matthau himself and then people he worked with closely, it’s really a worthwhile fifty minutes. I tried to watch a couple of movies but just kept dozing off so I gave up the ghost, or the ghost gave up me, I know not which, I care not which. I did get nine hours of good sleep. Once up, I answered e-mails. I’d ordered food the night before – orange chicken extra crispy from the local City Wok, so that arrived at twelve-thirty and was a slightly smaller half portion than usual but that was fine by me. The important part is that it was good. I’d had a little English muffin when I got up, just so I could take the pills. Anyway, food was excellent. The breath thing was tolerable almost the entire day and most of the evening but got bad about eleven o’clock. Annoying. I did manage to watch a few irritating YouTube videos, including a couple of high-speed chases that had no endings, which is REALLY irritating. Speaking of irritating, I should be done writing these here notes right now, but here I am stuck in the muck of the first paragraph. Continuing on with the uneventful yesterday, I did some work on the computer, did list a couple of new items and will do more today and tomorrow, then later I had my food for pill two – a really good chicken salad sandwich on rye from Nate ‘n’ Al’s deli in the Hills of Beverly. I could go for that every day and interestingly, it’s the cheapest sandwich on the menu. Most expensive, of course, is the pastrami – close to thirty bucks. But that’s all delis in LA, really. Then I tried watching, dozed off repeatedly, then finally gave up the damn ghost or the damn ghost gave up me, and here we are and all I have to say is Great Caeser’s Ghost. I used to say that all the time as a young child – it used to drive my mother crazy, and I think well all know that was a VERY short drive. Symphony three has ended and I really enjoyed all of it. And the piece that followed on that CD is called A Tribute and that is a beautiful and very lyrical piece with a gorgeous melody. Sir Adrian Boult was a huge champion of Rubbra’s.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll go to the mail place to ship another item that sold yesterday and to pick up a small package – have no idea what it is – then I’ll come home, eat, take pills (what else is new), list a few things, and then watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow is just relaxing, maybe listing, then Monday I have a noon o’clock appointment with my neurologist and we’ll see what he has to say about this breath business. Then the week will be finalizing casting, setting the first two weeks of rehearsals, getting the cast the piano plunk tracks and the band tracks, and prepping for rehearsals. Of course, there’s Halloween, and then, shockingly, it’s November. Where the HELL did October go?

Well, dear reader, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, go to the mail place, come home, eat, take pills, list a few more items, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What kind of sandwich have you eaten the most of in your life thus far. That’s a hard one to answer, but if pressed I would say it would be a toss-up between sky high pastrami sandwiches and turkey sandwiches, with tuna sandwiches made here running neck and neck with both. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall undoubtedly utter quite vociferously, Great Caeser’s Ghost.
