Well, dear readers, one goes along in life and some of us having been doing so for over seven and close to eight decades. And in that time, you think you’ve heard it all – all the slang, all the for their time “hip” words like “gear” and “fab” from the gear and fab sixties, or today’s favorite idiotic food saying, “This is FIRE.” But I, in all my years, have never heard anything so stupid as what I call The Missing T – it’s mostly young people who do this and how it became a thing I have no idea. But I happened to watch a YouTube video from a regional CBS station about a murder, the murderer’s first name being Clayton. Let’s all take a moment and pronounce Clayton, shall we? Ready, set, go – ClayTon. Very good. Well, this reporter, who looked like she was barely twenty, said this guy’s name about fifty times in two minutes. And what did we, the viewers, hear? Hold on to your hats – we heard, Clay’En. No T anywhere. And it’s a real thing now – I hear it all the time and it’s usually in a two-syllable word in which there is a T in the middle. Take for example the easy to pronounce “Eaten” as in “eaTen.” Simple as pie. Not now. Now we get, “I have just ea’En. Someone explain this to me real slow. Explain to me the why of it. Yes, cockneys have done it for centuries. But we are not cockney. Nor are the people in this country who do it a hundred times a day. “I pressed the bu’on on the answering machine. “I had a very impor’ant assignment.” “It’s cold out, let me put on a pair of mi’ens.” I’m told it’s now called “lazy speech” because, yeah, you’re saving soooo much time not pronouncing a T. Many online think it’s a regional thing here – no it isn’t. They have other opinions about what it is – none of them right. The rightest opinion I’ve seen is that it’s mostly done by kiddies in their 20s and social media influencers – that makes sense, sadly. One online idiot said the only young people who pronounce Ts are pretentious theater kids. Sorry, “thea’er” kids. Anyway, I loathe it and want to throttle a chicken whenever I hear it. End of The Missing T rant.
Yesterday was another day of relaxing, but not really. I had to be up at eight and only got six hours of sleep. At nine, I was on my way to Doug’s apartment to retrieve two boxes of Applause materials. I finally go someone who was helpful to help – turns out someone put the boxes insides of Doug’s apartment. We retrieved them and put them in the motor car. I then came directly home directly. I checked the boxes and unfortunately what we really needed wasn’t in there – the orchestra charts. So, Doug wrote them and hopefully those will be coming soon. Then I began following a book auction online. It was more than a little boring, none of the books looked like they were in collectible condition, and I wouldn’t even put them on my shelf. I also would never consign rare books – everything was going for under 200 dollars, but condition is everything and no one would pay more for stuff in condition like this grouping of books. I don’t think I’d make anywhere near what my current collection is worth. There are much better auction houses. I made half a can of roast beef hash. It was okay, not as good as I remembered it, and when you take it out of the can it looks just like dog food. I, myself, rather resemble dog food these days, and I didn’t need to come out of a can to notice. I ordered a small Caesar salad and a small chicken pasta salad – both arrived and were fine. At around two-thirty the auction was still going on, but the book stuff was pretty much done by then. I sat on my couch like so much fish, turned on the Firestick, went to YouTube, began a video and was out like a light for the next five HOURs. Yes, you heard that right. Once back up, I had a telephonic conversation with a film director, then ordered some fried garlic rice – small portion – from the nearby Gyu-kaku. It was a bit flavorless, but I didn’t want anything beyond that. I did not eat either soup or salad that it came with. And here we are.
Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll eat something light, and then I’ll relax until it’s time to shave and shower and mosey on over to the theater for our final weekend of shows.
Tomorrow is the same and I’m sure I’ll stay for the performance. Sunday is our closing matinee and then a cast partay after.
IMPORTANT: Please remember, the board will be off-line for a while starting at one o’clock.
Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, eat, relax, shave and shower, and mosey on over to the theater. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray/streaming player? I’ll start – nothing. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, where I shall pronounce every T in sight.
