THE STEPFORD NOTES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have decided that these here notes should be written by AI. In fact, I think I should be AI. Why do we need actual humanity when AI can recreate it so perfectly? Why be artistic when AI can be artistic for you? Why write these here notes day in and day out when I can just use AI to write them? After all, wouldn’t it be exactly the same? Well, let’s see, let’s give it a whirl, shall we?

Well, dear readers, the following notes will be brief and to the point. They will be humorous and yet have great insight into the paranormal world of the paranormal. They’ll talk about movies and musicals and plays as if these notes here knew what they were talking about. Today, I ate orange chicken on a bed of rice and some mein that was low. End of sample AI notes.

Well, that was most excellent AI was it not? I would never have known the difference between those AI notes and these here notes. I am, in fact, mind-boggled by the brilliance of AI. From now on these will be The Stepford Notes and coincidentally, that is the movie I watched last night, the original 1975 version starring Katherine Ross. I loved the book by Ira Levin, which is wonderfully written and very short, like 145 pages short and that’s including chapter numbers that have no text on them – more like 135 pages. But you know what? If that’s what it takes to tell the story, then that’s what it takes. Anyway, it’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Ira Levin and I’m happy to have known him and even have him blurb my first novel. I did not like the film version at all when I saw it back in the day and I still keep hoping I’ll like it better and I never do. The screenplay is by William Goldman, a fine writer himself, and while not his finest hour, it’s certainly okay. No, the culprit in this affair is one person and one person only – director Bryan Forbes. Now, let it be said that Mr. Forbes was an okay at best actor. When he switched to directing, he was certainly lauded for almost all of his early films, like Whistle Down the Wind (his first film), The L-Shaped Room, Séance on a Wet Afternoon (his best), The Whisperers and a few others from that era. After that, things become dicey, film-wise. A couple of okay films mixed in with some stinkers with the latter category coming out on top. The movie after The Stepford Wives was The Slipper and the Rose, and as good as those Sherman Brothers songs are, the movie is a turgid mess. Anyway, at some point some idiot thought it would be good to have a Stepford Universe – several TV movie sequels and then finally a remake that was worse than the first movie. The best thing in the original Stepford Wives is Paula Prentiss.

Prior to the movie, I got eight hours of sleep and could have used three or four more, but noooo, the butt cheeks across the street had a big cement scene whirring loudly away. Once up, I saw the site was still screwed up, and was told they were in the process of fixing it. That they did and I finally posted the notes. Apparently, hackers were the cause. Then I got a lovely e-mail containing a short and sweet blurb for the new book, from the person I’d thought would be fun. So, that was great. After that, I went to the bank to deposit the show check, which I’d been asked to hold until yesterday. Then I ordered orange chicken and a kid’s version of lo mein from P.F. Chang’s – both arrived quickly. The orange chicken wasn’t much to my liking and the lo mein was boring – but that’s always been my experience with P.F. Chang’s. Then I chose a few songs, gathered sheet music for them, but mostly took it easy. Throat isn’t quite as raw as yesterday, but nose is very runny, and I have way too much phlegm. The Claritin-D isn’t working as well as it usually does, so I’m going to get some Flonase and try that. Then I had a telephonic conversation, then watched the movie and here we are.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, I’ll just relax and try to feel better and hopefully the creeps across the street will be quiet, then I’ll eat, wait for the proofers, wait for more blurbs, Doug should be getting me the flyer for Kritzerland so I can get that to the club, and I think I’ll watch High Society this evening.

Tomorrow will be more of that and so will Sunday – IF I’m feeling all better, then I’ll attend a little birthday partay for David Wechter. Then Monday morning it’s back to the eye doctor.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, relax, eat, choose more songs, wait for people to get back to me, get the flyer to the club, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/Blu and Ray/streaming player? I’ll start – CD, nothing. Blu-ray, High Society. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, thinking maybe The Stepford Notes isn’t such a good idea. I think we should assign a new meaning to the initials A.I. like Astonishing Intestines or Absolute Idiot – let’s hear yours.
