SETTING UP THE NEW MAC MINI AND MONITOR

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we are in the throes of getting the new computer set up – the throes, I tell you. Nothing is easy but only because the old computer crashed three times when trying to get it set up to do it wirelessly, which probably would have taken fourteen hours. We then hooked up the hard drive to a regular port and THAT was going to take nine hours. So, we kept starting over and this time we used the Thunderbolt cable that I smartly bought and now it’s doing the transfer. It originally said six hours, but that’s already down to three. So, back house guy went home and if he’s still up when it’s finished, he’ll come back. Although, when it’s finished, I can try to do the Microsoft 365 download. And hopefully the old computer won’t crash again (the desktop kept disappearing completely), so that if I have to keep doing stuff until morning, I’ll be able to do it on the old one. We should have just done the hard drive backup first, but I forgot I bought the Thunderbolt cord. Anyway, it’s plugging away. Can’t wait till it’s done. Meantime, we also cleaned up all the wiring and dust and junk and unhooked the external speakers. Later, I’ll hear what the speakers are like in the new monitor, but they get VERY high ratings. I’m actually surprised it’s not moving faster with the Thunderbolt cable, but when it’s transferring over 800,000 files, I guess it is what it is. What those 800,000 files are I haven’t the foggiest. Otherwise, I got maybe six hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, talked to my gal about my book order and the Amazon issue, which she will now escalate right up the food chain, since the people she was talking to don’t seem to have the slightest idea of what to do. I had my muffin and pill one. Then I had a productive work session for the music in the play I’ll be directing and that was fun. Once that was done, the Mac Mini was supposed to arrive at three. It arrived at five. I got everything unboxed, all the plugs laid on top of everything, so that it would be ready to go when I got back from dinner. I shaved and them moseyed on over to Shanghai Rose to meet Cousins Alan and Dee Dee and friend Saul. We all stuffed ourselves silly and had fun conversation. There was duck, pork fried rice, string beans, cashew chicken, pork slices and baos. I had one bao, some fried rice, some cashew chicken, and string beans – no duck or pork slices. It was all very good, and a good time was had by all. Then I came right home, and we began the throes, oh, yes, we began the throes. It’s still plugging along – transfer speeds vary, but it probably would have taken twelve hours by wireless. I’m writing these here notes on the old computer and praying it doesn’t crash again – three times in a row is more than a little scary. Once I get it into the form, then I’m protected and can, if I have to, post them from the phone. Oh, and I got the softcover of the book and it looks splendidly splendid.

Today, if we don’t finish tonight, then I’ll be up by eight-thirty and the back house guy can help getting everything else set up. I already set up the touch ID, so that’s done, but we have to set up Siri and Apple AI – I have no idea what that is but I’m sure there’s a video somewhere. I’ll have to put in all the passwords for the email addresses, as that doesn’t port over. All the web passwords are in the keychain. The other unknown is the Music folder but I’m hoping for the best. I’ll eat at some point, talk with the author of the play at some point, hopefully everything will work as it should, at which point I’ll wipe the old computer clean. Then I can watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow and the weekend I really need for myself. Then come Monday, I’ll place my book order and that will be done. I also got two new bar stools coming on Saturday and someone will come on Sunday and assemble them. They’re a lot sturdier than these awful stools I currently have and much better for my back. I should have done this a year ago.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up early if we don’t finish tonight, set up everything that needs to be set up, make sure all passwords are in and especially Microsoft Word, I’ll eat, talk with the author of the play, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could go back in time, which classical composer would you like to sup with? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, happy to be almost done setting up the new Mac Mini and monitor. I’ll rest easy when I see my desktop on the new monitor.
