RISE AND SHINE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry, for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon and I must get some kind of beauty sleep. I’ve switched over from Mr. Williams (I shall return to him in a bit) to Mr. Goldsmith, namely Jerry. I know most FANatics love the Jerry of the late 80s, 90s, and 2000s, which is my least favorite Goldsmith stuff, especially the later 90s and all of the 2000s – the really bombastic stuff that his fans adore. For me, the greatest Goldsmith scores start with The Twilight Zone and most of his 1960s output, which is breathtaking, where every score is truly its own thing. Then we move into the 1970s and he shifts his style and it’s still great but it’s a new era, although we occasionally do get a smaller score, like The Other, that’s pure Jerry of old. But his action scores of the 1970s are great, and you have classics like Chinatown, Capricorn One, The Wind and the Lion, The Omen, Islands in the Stream, Coma, The Boys from Brazil, Alien, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture – all their own thing and all great. Then the 1980s, we do get some fun and fine scores like Poltergeist, Psycho II, Explorers, Gremlins, but also a lot of stuff I just don’t respond to. But when I want a Goldsmith fix, it’s usually the 1960s I return to, with favorites like Freud, Lonely Are the Brave, The List of Adrian Messenger, A Patch of Blue, The Trouble with Angels, The Sand Pebbles, Planet of the Apes, well, just about all of ‘em. Now playing, Freud. I started a motion picture last night, a so-called thriller without thrills, with so much obtuse dialogue that after twenty minutes I shut it off, and perhaps one of the worst “thriller” titles in history – Backstabbing for Beginners. Very convoluted, a bore, and a no-go. I did watch some true crime videos on YouTube, along with some incredible Penn and Teller Fool Us magic tricks that just boggle the mind, as well as a few irritating videos. I did get seven hours of sleep, got up, answered e-mails, had a bagel and lox and pill one, proofed ten pages and got to page fifty, so plugging along slowly, then around six I could not eat any more lox or bagels, so I got a taco and cheese enchilada from Don Cuco – a la carte, so no beans and rice. Then later still, an English muffin and jam. I have to buy more jam today because we can’t be without our jam, can we? Then I shaved, did a few things on the computer, and here we are.

Today, I’ll be up at eight and out the door by eight-thirty, I’ll breakfast somewhere fun, I’ll do a Gelson’s run, come home, proof, get things ready for the helper for the book pick-up, although I will have to make time to sign all of them first, and then I have to get myself in the right mental state for the neurologist visit on Friday. I wouldn’t have to at all if it weren’t for the early appointment, which will involve a drive I hate making, although I’ve pretty much decided to take an alternate route. Then at some point, I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

Tomorrow, books should arrive and if I can get them all signed by mid-afternoon, the helper will come, if not she’ll come early tomorrow, then the neurologist on Friday, and hopefully a restful weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up at eight and out the door by eight-thirty, breakfast, do a Gelson’s run, come home, proof, get things read for the helper, begin girding my loins for the neurologist visit and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: Favorite Jerry Goldsmith scores. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, and get some beauty sleep for the early rise and shine.
