THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the music of the night is a very interesting piece by one Toru Takemitsu, a classical and film composer I’m fond of – well, his classical work can be, how shall we say, difficult and twelve-tone tuneless, but some of it, like this piece is quite atmospheric – it’s called I Hear the Water Dreaming and I’m quite enjoying it. He wrote two great film scores for Kurosawa – Dodeskaden and Ran. He also wrote several scores for classics of the Japanese cinema, including Harkiri, The Face of Another, Kwaidan, Woman in the Dunes, as well as the American film, Rising Sun, which we released on Kritzerland, a great score which is still available for those who may not have it. The original CD release was a bit of a joke, presenting the score in a very bad light and not much of it. Our release is complete and superb. I did finish the Scorsese documentary, all five hours of it. There is some moving stuff towards the end with he and his wife, who has very bad Parkinson’s and with his daughter. Then I watched Odds Against Tomorrow, which I could have sworn I never saw all the way through, but of course I had and only seven years ago, which means I already own this on Blu-ray, just a different label – but that release was full frame, which is a joke. This Kino release is properly framed at 1.85. Unfortunately, not a very good transfer. The cast is superb – I mean, Robert Ryan, Harry Belafonte, Ed Begley, Gloria Grahame, Shelly Winters, and in one scene a very young Wayne Rogers and Zohra Lampert. After that, I watched the first fifteen minutes of the supremely weird and outre motion picture entitled Invasion USA, which I’ve written about, but will wait to write again until I finish. Otherwise, I got seven hours of sleep, answered e-mails, made tacos and with the leftover meat and cheese, a tortilla with those items – very good. Then I took photos for eBay and spent the next couple of hours listing a few items, two of which already sold at full price. Then I watched the end of the doc, Odds Against Tomorrow, and the bit of Invasion USA and then began the music of the night. Takemitsu is through, but I’ve stayed in Japanese mode and am listening to the music of Takashi Yoshimatsu – don’t know his music at all, but I’m listening to his saxophone concerto, which is very nice. That will be followed by his third symphony. I downloaded all these things for free from Apple Music. For snack one I had some rice pudding with pill two, and for snack two I had a shrimp cocktail and pill three. And here we are as the clock strikes midnight and midnight strikes the clock back.

Today, I’ll be up when I’m up, and I’d like to list at least five to ten more items today – Broadway and film stuff and some other memorabilia and maybe a book or two. I think I’ll just make some pasta here with the other eight ounces of meat that’s left and some red sauce and red onions. That sounds good – I could also turn the red sauce to pink if I’m in that kind of mood. We shall see. Otherwise, I have to rest my voice, which is trashed because of all this shortness of breath and coughing – tired of it, frankly. Then I’ll watch, listen, and relax.

This week is busy trying to finish casting our show – still need three ensemble boys and two leads. Crazy. Also hoping to get more tracks. Some meetings and meals to be had and waiting on some news about the next Kritzerland show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be up when I’m up, photo and list five to ten items, eat, rest my trashed voice, and then watch, listen, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, as we continue with the music of the night.
