And the word of the day is: EPICENE!

Interesting choice.  I'd never heard of this word:

Main Entry: ep·i·cene (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/epicene)
Pronunciation: 'e-p&-"sEn
Function: adjective
Etymology: Middle English, from Latin epicoenus, from Greek epikoinos, from epi- + koinos common -- more at CO- (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/co-)
1 of a noun : having but one form to indicate either sex
2 a : having characteristics typical of the other sex : INTERSEXUAL (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/intersexual)[/b] b : EFFEMINATE (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/effeminate)[/u][/b]
3 : lacking characteristics of either sex
- epicene noun
- ep·i·cen·ism  /-"sE-"ni-z&m, "e-p&-'/ noun

As TPunk mentioned yesterday, we spent the day visitin'. We had a grand time uptown. The weather never really got as nice as Saturday but the company made up for it. We strolled around the Upper Upper West Side, had a delicious brunch (I had Scotch Eggs Benny which is Eggs Benedict with Salmon) went through the Cloisters and then had Ice Cream (I had butter pecan and rum raisin). We got to see some great pictures of Rodz production of Salad Days, pictures of a cat as an Egyptian queen and Rodz in a great slacker wig, with and without facial hair. Rodz show eneded last night and he had to help strike the set so we all took the train downtown, thus ending our most excellent Mother's Day Adventure.

There are so many great songs out there by Mr. Warren. Very hard to choose. He worked with Al Dubin, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, Mac Gordon, Arthur Freed, Harold Adamson and even Wyatt Cooper (Who I am not familar with)

I Only Have Eyes For You
You're Getting To Be a Habit With Me (The Nun Song)
An Affair To Remember
Jeepers Creepers
You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby
On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe

"Chattanooga Choo-Choo"
"About a Quarter to Nine"
"This Heart of Mine"
"The Stanley Steamer Song"
"Zing a Little Zong"
"That's Amore"
"You WOnderful You"
"Happy Harvest"

I just checked and saw that Tivo has yet to take Bush's address into account in its scheduling.  It still shows that The King of Queens and How I Met Your Mother are running at 8:00 to 9:00.  If everything gets bumped an hour, I'll miss recording New Christine.  But then that will clear up Tivo to record the Judy Garland By Myself documentary on TCM.

Now I understand why some people own two Tivos.

On Saturday morning I woke the girls at 9:30 am and made breakfast for them.. then one mother came and picked up her DD and I delivered another to her home environment... then my dear niece (not the one DR Jose so kindly feted, but her younger sister) and the Vixter & I went to meet my parents and my brother , SIL and the other two nieces for a Pre- Mother's Day lunch at the local Applebees

Vixdad stayed home awaiting the new stove

Lunch was wonderful and afterwards, since the weather was finally fine, the Vixter and I went out so she could finally try out her new 21 speed Schwinn bicycle... her birthday present from her dad & I.

Alas, no stove ever arrived, just an automated phone call from Sears stating that our delivery was scheduled for Sunday afternoon....

SUNDAY!?  Whoda thunk it... but arrive it finally did on Sunday....

Unfortunately they don't install so Vixdad (whose Dad is a chartered electrical engineer and passed on his knowledeg to his son) hardwired the stove into the electrical system.. unfortunately it took several hours and two trips to Home Depot... so we wern't actually able to cook on said stove... so Mother's Day dinner consisted of Chinese Takeout.. which was very good however!!

And that is where I have been!!

Supposedly, the address will last 20 minutes. DOn't know if networks will then start their shows right after, take it to the half hour and then start, or do 40 minutes of commentary and then start their shows.

I read that ABC has moved the Oprah "Legend's Ball" special to NEXT week rather than postpone its starting time tonight.

Them hackers is everywhere!!!

Quote
TORONTO - A mocking announcement about Canada's prime minister, "Stephen Harper Eats Babies," was flashed on electronic advertising signs on Toronto area commuter trains for several days, and technicians were still scrambling Tuesday to get the signs fixed.

"Stephen Harper Eats Babies. Stephen Harper Eats Babies. Stephen Harper Eats Babies," started to appear every three seconds across some LED screens late last week. The signs usually carry transit updates and advertising spots.

"It appears that this was a case of electronic vandalism," said Stephanie Sorensen, corporate communications and media specialist for the GO Transit commuter system. "We assume it was a hacker. We haven't identified the person who did this, but we're working closely with the contractor who runs the signs to fix the problem."

Screens on GO Trains have been shut down since Monday. Sorensen said she expects they will remain off line for a few more days until password-protected technology is installed to protect them from computer hackers.

"We regret that it happened, and we're sorry if anybody was offended, including the prime minister," Sorensen said.

I love that it took "several days" before anyone though to shut it down!!

I have a little list

Quote
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A high school teacher has apologized for asking students to write about whom they would kill and how they would do it, and officials said he will likely keep his job.

Michael Maxwell, who teaches industrial technology at Central High School, said his request that students in his beginning drafting class describe how they would carry out a murder was merely a writing prompt. It was not clear why he asked the drafting class to write fiction.

Good morning, all!

Today I'll be packing and loading the car for the trek down to LA for my nephew's wedding next Saturday. Then at about 4:30 I'll head into Seattle for tonight's performance. The play runs about 2 hours, with an intermission - and there will probably be about half an hour of discussion/Q&A after - and then I'll get to meet DR George.

I had planned to stay in Seattle tonight, instead of making the hour and a half drive back to the cabin, then going back into Seattle at 8:30 tomorrow to pick up another nephew for the drive down... but I just don't want to miss the visit by the baby raccoons tonight!! So - yes, I'll come back to the cabin after the show, and yes, I'll get up early tomorrow morning and go back to Seattle to pick up said nephew...

I tell ya' this place is magical - I hate to leave, and I'm always so glad to get back! The birds, the animals, the garden, the STREAM that runs right by the house... serenity and bliss.

But - I will love being with the family for this wedding. What an emotional time it will be for us, and how we will all miss my parents! AND on the next evening, I'll get to see Bruce's new show on its feet! That'll be swell!

I actually thought the show was pretty good.  Yes it was sort of somber and chilling. But there were lots of new developments.

I thought the whole thing with lynnette was quite interesting, the way she followed tom.  The promos had made me think that he was not cheating.  And then when she was gone at the end, it brought back the conversation that she had had with him re: cheating and how she would leave.

I thought that the whole thing with carlos, gabby and the surrogate was quite foreshadowing of things to come.

And I thought that edie and the fight and the bee thing was pretty funny. Oh and susan and the wire.  And it was nice to see susan with the plumber again. And REALLY nice to see Susan get to interact so much with bree.  I have said this before, but i really wish that was a lot more interaction between the four stars. Too often it feels like they are leading completely separte lives.

Also, re: bree, i was not expecting any of that!

Oh and the end with paul young was interesting too. Can't wait for the season finale next week.

That's not what i meant.  They are supposed to be such good friends, yet they rarely interact.  Often the show seems like 4 separate shows.  I think the show would be a lot better if there was more interaction with the 4 leads. I know i love it when the characters interact.

I agree with your comments.  I do think it's about time that Bree get some serious help but I felt bad that her family so completely fell apart.  I do kind of feel like the writers kind of created her daughter's nastiness out of nowhere this season.  I feel awful for Lynette.  I can't wait to see how it is all going to work out.  I also loved Paul Young's reaction to the whole thing at the end- "she is really good" I expected that maybe he would be pushed over the edge but it seemed like he was already calculating his options.

That figures!  The two shows that I would look forward to--20 GOOD YEARS and 30 ROCK--are going to run against LOST.  Otherwise, I guess I'll give the STUDIO 60 show a try.  And it looks like NBC is giving no consideration to Saturday nights.

We will also skip the President tonight, because we will be attending the 25th anniversary gala for the local school district's Gifted and Talented Enrichment (GATE) program, in which DH Richard was the math/science teacher for the last 15 years of his career and DS Rob was a communication arts student in 4th-6th grades.

They are all in the current revival.  The "Sleep Tite" anthem has always been in the show, but never recorded.  "The World Around Us" was in the 70s revival.  I don't know where "The Three of Us" came from.  And I'm surprised that "The Man Who Invented Love"  wasn't shoehorned in somehow.

Big Brother's seventh edition will feature an "All-Stars" cast comprised of houseguests who have appeared on the reality show's six previous editions. After CBS and the show's producers select a pool of twenty previous contestants, the public will get to vote on which former houseguests will get to participate in Big Brother 7: All-Stars. TOD:  I Only Have Eyes for You.  I once got into a bit of a heated e-discussion with someone over at the A&M Board who insisted Harry Warren had ripped off his father's songs.  I thought not.  :)

Re:  Tammy and the Doctor and MacDonald Carey.  I saw Mac in South Pacific when I was but a kid.  Don't remember who played Emile (little joke there).  Betsy and I were very disappointed that Aras won--I think he was just a big arrogant f***, but what do I know?  We were rooting for Terry.  Also I believe that Tammy and the Doctor was scored by none other than Percy Faith, and I am happy to tell you Faith aficianados that three of the rarest Faith LPs ever have just been released (well, actually tomorrow, but I got advance copies) on CD:  his two Japanese only releases of contemporary Japanese pop music of the 70s, and the 50s album Touchdown.  They're available at www.Taragon.com.  The Japanese albums especially will delight fans of the classic 60-70s Faith sound.

Catching up department:  Betsy and I watched, for the first time ever, A Kiss Before Dying the other night on TCM, based on a book by BK's close personal friend Ira Levin.  May I just say that Virginia Leith was perhaps the most laughably bad actress I have witnessed recently, and though Maltin gives him raves, I found Robert Wagner a little wanting, too.  Woodward was great.  Had to laugh at the "theme" song--how exactly do you make a pop hit out of the phrase "a kiss before dying."  Evidently the songwriters couldn't figure out how to, either.  ;)

Spent a nice afternoon watching a rare Frances Farmer 1958 live t.v. drama and correctly guessed it was scored by Jerry Goldsmith.

Pianist is now forty minutes late and I am getting REALLY annoyed.  There is so much to do and now he's putting me in a time-crunch to get through by my dinner.  Four hours and turned into three hours, which is not so good.

You should have hired me.  You know with my penchant for rehearsal tempi I could have been through in 15 minutes.  :)

Hi all, I was a little worried after the visit to the doctor. She was more than willing to help me out and agreed I'm burned out, but didn't think she could just write a note and I'd get 6 weeks off.  Well, I called our Administrative Officer and my boss. Their response was "is 6 weeks enough? do you need more time? whatever you need we'll workout" Sheesh! Who woulda thunk it.   So my boss is coming up tomorrow and I'll touch base with my doctor to get the note I need and I'll most likely be on leave from next Monday until July 10. I'll have to use a few days of vacation, but I'm sure Paul will let me help him paint a mural on the water tower for Saturday in the Park again this year, so that will be how I end my leave of absence

Betsy and I almost bought a complete dump last year solely for the view.  We actually created a new character (we have stock characters we do, but that's another story) based on the house.  The house was a complete shambles and reeked of cigarette smoke (I mean absolutely reeked--you would open the front door and be assaulted by airborne nicotine odor).  And yet there amidst all the chaos was one solitary linen closet, with shelf after shelf of neatly folded sheets, all with hand-calligraphed labels underneath them, "Single flat," "Single fitted," etc.  I immediately came up with the chainsmoking wife of the home, Mrs. Allen Swanson (we knew the owner's name from the listing), who I made sound kind of like Selma and Patti of The Simpsons, and who had a sheet fetish.  Is this all too much information?  Oh, well, too late.  :)

On a sadder note, INVASION has been canceled by ABC. However, they renewed WHAT ABOUT BRIAN, an hour dramedy that did dismally in the ratings on Monday night.

Looks like 7th HEAVEN might be back for at least 13 shows next season after all. What a surprise!

Where did you read about these ABC shows?

I actually liked WHAT ABOUT BRIAN. It was very funny.

I do believe that 7TH HEAVEN will be back for sure. I posted the link this past weekend. It was on the main yahoo page. I am really really happy about that one. I just hope the new network keeps my other favorite shows. And i also hope that i get the new network! :)

I once had a boss who encouraged those of us who were eligible to take 4 weeks/year to take at least a two-week block, three if we could swing it.  He contended that it takes at least a week to wind down, before you can really have a relaxing vacation.  Having taken most of my vacation in recent years in, at most, one-week chunks, I totally agree with him (and we didn't agree on much!).

JRand - Back when Encores did their presentation of PAJAMA GAME starring Karen Ziemba and the World's Sexiest Man Alive (WSMA) Brent Barrett, there was a talkback after one of the perfromances.  Even back then, long before Harry Connick Jr's involvement, Richard Adler had indicated that there was talk of a revival which (I'm paraphrasing from middle-aged memory) would include material not previously heard in the show.  So it may have been Adler's influence, at least based on what was suggested at that talkback years ago.

Then I put in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Since I saw it in HD-DVD this afternoon at Best Buy, I wanted to see how the standard definition DVD compared.

Color saturation was equal to the HD-DVD version, but that sense of three dimensionality on the HD-DVD was missing. The standard version looks great, clean, sharp, perfectly presentable for most folks.

But just like HD on network television spoils one for watching regular TV, I think this could easily do the same. Fortunately, the players right now are expensive and scarce, there are only a dozen movies available in the format (though more are coming every couple of weeks), and there will be a competing, non compatible HD format for DVDs coming out this summer.

So, I'm content to watch and enjoy what I have and wait for prices to drop, more films to be available, and the format war to resolve itself.
