Well, you've read the notes, you know all the news that's fit to print, and now it is time for you to post until the breaking cows come home.

And on that note (E-flat), I'm going to sleep.  I want to get to work in the morning so I don't have to use vacation because earlier in the week, I came into work late and left early.  Good night!

Well, you've read the notes, you know all the news that's fit to print, and now it is time for you to post until the breaking cows come home.

But before I go, for no reason whatsoever, here's a dancing cow:

BK, I don't think my space will destroy sites like this. If anything, it is a place for all the teenagers to gather and say and do all those inane things we hate to read about on decent boards.  As long as there are adults who want to get together online and have real discussions about theatre, about film about any topic under the sun, there will be a need for places such as this one, where real community and real friendship can form and exist.

I have heard of MYSPACE and I think I went there once....it is not for me, but it serves its purpose.

Like many things on the internet, what it started out to be is not what it turned out to be....which is just what MR BK says.

For some reason communication is NO longer a face to face thing.....those meetings usually turn out to be a bit awkward....communication is a thing best done with a keyboard and screen and lots of space between the two people....21st Century style.

Speaking of veracity!

I keep reading Disney releases that say HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL is a bit hit and its CD soundtrack is the first television soundtrack to reach a huge number of sales....BUT in every Walmart or Target I go into....the shelves contain Dozens of the CD's!  Everytime....dusty and untouched.  Are they counting sales to outlets or sales to peoples?

It's like those crazy Mariah Carey numbers.....are they going to take back that platinum disk award when the remainders start coming in?

I turned on the air conditioning last night and now I have a sore throat.  Good morning, all!

About two years ago, the New York State Theatre Institute went to Myspace and I ended up with a page.  I hardly ever go to it.  I have no idea what to do with it, but my friends Michael Rupert and Susan Egan use their blogs to write about their events and publicize themselves.  Good for them.  If I had a huge fan base and a life crammed with concert/stage appearances, I might be more informed on the benefits of the site.

I don't believe Myspace is run by idiots, but I believe Broadwayworld.com is, since so many of them are high school naifs who think an old show is CATS and spend their days debating wonderful Elphaba performances. I can take correcton by my peers, but I refuse to let a hostile/arrogant/smug college student tell me how awful CAROUSEL is while praising the merits of this pathetic new THREEPENNY OPERA revival, especially since he or she has probably never seen a dcecent performance of either work.

But I rant.

I actually like HIGH SCHOOL THE MUSICAL.  If you like musicals, and the recent teen romantic comedies (think CINDERELLA STORY or something like that) then i think you will enjoy the movie. IT is cute and fun. But it is definitely geared towards young girls. And they love it!
Title: Re:BREAKING NEWS
Post by: Jennifer on May 27, 2006, 05:28:57 AM
Oh and last night DR George wrote (about the movie):

Quote
Okay, I have a question about the movie, "High School Musical."  I know that the brother and sister are the "stars" of the school and they really, really, really (that's three reallys) want to be the leads of this new musical that one of their fellow students is writing.  HOWEVER, the lead characters of the musical (within the movie) are romantic leads and the songs that the other couple have been learning (that are from the musical that they are going to perform) are very romantic lovey-dovey ballads.  NOW, why would the brother and sister want to play these romantic leads?  Is there some kind of incestuous subtext going on?  And if the brother and the sister need (for plot purposes) to be auditioning rivals for the other couple, why would the authors of the movie have the musical (within the movie) be that romantic a story??

That's all I could think about as I was watching this.  Just curious.

It is sort of creepy that the brother and sister want to be the romantic leads, but since it's Disney there is nothing incenestuous implied.

The brother/sister duo don't only want to be the leads, they expect to be them. They have been in all the musicals and basically run the drama club.

I think that it makes sense for the show to be romantic, since it's all about the basketball player/science girl getting together. I think that the brother and sister have to audition for it, sort of makes it funny to kids.  And the brother/sister don't act romantic when they audition so no biggie! :)

I am up and will attempt to meet my sister and niece at the store.  I have been really trying to take it easy. And while the pain in my neck is mostly gone, it is still really really stiff. Any ideas?

No matter what i do (carrying books, washing a dish), it gets so stiff.  When i got home from seeing the baby last night it was bad. I did not lift her. BUt watching her still requires some mobility.

IT was cute though. My aunt and uncle say her crawl like a maniac for the first time. She is really good and fast. And she also can grab onto things and pull herself up to stand (and she only just turned 8 months). We are all so impressed! :)

Callie was looking for Nil this morning and started meowing and meowing about 5:00 AM, so I got up. I decided to get on the computer for awhile and looked and saw the sunrise may be nice, so I grabbed my camera ran outside and slam....the door locked behind me.  Now my mother says shes a light sleeper, but it took and hour of ringing the door bell and pounding the door before she looked out the window and said.."What are you doing out in the yard?" It was pretty funny. Thank heavens it was Warm out. I did see lots of birds...even a beautiful white pelican in flight. It was nice.

TOD - the seminar I attended Thursday afternoon was all about intergenerational issues.  The Millennials, born after 1980, are characteristic multitaskers and like to be "connected," according to the presenters.  There was quite a discussion about the meaning of connectedness.  Many Boomers in the audience thought there was a loss of personal interaction with the use of high-tech communications tools.

Good morning!

Another hot, muggy day here. The NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 event is in town this week (the NASCAR All-Stars was last week), so the whole town has been about racing for two weeks solid. Since I have only listened to one race in my whole life (forced to by being a passenger on a four hour car trip from the beach with a NASCAR groupie), I am totally disinterested in the outcome, but it's REALLY BIG here, believe me!

I really have no opinion about these blog sites. I never go to them. I really only come here and to two other discussion boards about things that interest me (films, theater, show biz).

When I first came to the Internet, I used to spend a lot of time in theater chat rooms, but I quickly learned that the majority of posters were teens who knew nothing more than PHANTOM (at that time) and LES MIZ and knew nothing about even such pop hits as DOLLY, MAME, FIDDLER, BIRDIE, MY FAIR LADY, MUSIC MAN. Truly, you could NOT get an interesting discussiong going about anything except Michael Crawford and PHANTOM. So, I soon left those boards.

The thing about places like Myspace and similar blog spaces is that they are the height of ego.  Usually only about a dozen or so people are going to specific ones at a time.  So it's mostly an exercise in self-absorption and "me, me, me" meness.

I think the more isolated people become by technology, they then make an attempt to be noticed.  Sort of sound their "barbaric yawp" out there across the wilderness and chasms of the internet and see if anyone cares by responding.

I'm finding I'm spending less time on the internet in general because the novelty, like having 500 cable channels, has worn off and I can find more productive and fulfilling things to do with my time.  It's a worthwile tool, I still have certain sites I visited regularly, but I glean the information I want from them, don't dawdle, and press on now.  Nor do I spend as much time posting, given how small the audiences for some of these places are.  Too much energy spent; for too little return.  I'd rather expend the energy in real relationships with real people...Too many internet relationships are based on what Kurt Vonnegut calls the "grand faloon" which is because folks have one thing in common, they suddenly think they have a relationship of substance, when in fact, if they actually were around each other any length of time, they'd find out how little they actually do have in common.

I'm not saying one can't develop real friendships and relationships through the internet, it does happen...it's happened with me, but only rarely.  It's truly silly to think that everyone on a posting site you post on is suddenly your deepest bosom buddy.

I started on myspace a few months ago, and I find it incredibly useful for keeping in touch with friends that I no longer see in person, namely old high school and college friends.  I admit there are some annoying people on there...the half-naked girls who try to get as many people as possible on their lists, and any number of bands trying to gain a following by getting people to see their pages and listen to their songs.  But all in all, I find it a great way to see how my friends are doing, post pictures that I wouldn't get to share any other way, and occasionally blog something that I don't mind everyone looking at.  Blogs aren't diaries broadcasting private things to the public at large, they're a way to share news and thoughts with multiple people at once...kinda like the notes on here.
It might be a tool of the teenage creature, but mid-twenties people can find it pretty useful too :)

Hello and good morning to all!

Another cloudy and sporadically drizzley day up here in the woods... the raccoons still haven't Gotten It that I'm back, but the blue jays are very present. I have a small brown mouse living here - inside - with me currently. I see him off and on in the living room. I'd like to trap him and put him outside, but all my live traps went bye-bye when I left Redmond... maybe I'll get another. Maybe today.

I have been going through stuff, a bit at a time, and throwing out various items, accumulated over years. I've started a box for Value Village, proceeds from which go to services for the blind. But mostly, it's wads of papers, suitable for starting fires in my woodstove - got a huge box of tinder, now.

Is all of this "weeding out" preparatory to selling this place and re-locating back to Southern California? I wonder... lots of thinking and musing and meditating on that... If so, do tamed raccoons and birds add equity value? Do I even care?

It's just up the street from our backyard.  The car hops still come out to take your order and then hang the tray on your car window.   You can still get root beer in a frosted mug.  DH Richard's parents went there when they were dating back in the 1930's and our DS Rob was a cook there two years ago.

Just had a lovely lunch at the Boat Basin Cafe.  Then since we were with the dogs, we took a pet taxi home, and it turned out that the taxi driver's grandmother had been the personal assistant to Jerome Robbins for over thirty years.  That was interesting.

Thanks Francois.  We're doing ok today. I managed to get out of going to a 90th birthday party so I get the house to myself for a little while.  Quite a feat in my family.  Callie and I are enjoying it.  I was napping and may do a little more of that. Then it's off for a glass of wine so I can program a weather radio for a family friend, then to the Gingham Inn for the best pan fried chicken in the world. LOL Maybe I'll take my camera and take a photo of the chicken!

Back from some errands.

I think in certain ways, yes, the parents of people born post 1980 have helped turn this generation into a spoiled, entitled, immature, overprotected bunch of fools (obviously, that's a general statement and there are exceptions).  But, it's also the Internet in general, MTV, reality TV, films, all accentuating the amateur, the need to be connected twenty-four hours a day, the need that to be cool you have to be a slut (and that goes for men and women), the complete ignorance of what words really mean, and basically having to put a minus ten years on their age to realize what their emotional maturity is, age-wise.

In my opinion, myspace is a niche market for some people but it is not for all people. Live journal and blogging are only another avenue. I also have a blog but I have been shy advertising it here. I post in it once a week and offer my views on what I see around me whether in the news or society.

I remember the days of IRC client type chats but message boards seem to have stood the test of time. I remember the days of Classic Prodigy when that was the only way to chat.

It is interesting to see the fluidity of the different boards, blogging and online journaling through that connections can be made and then disappear due to real life and changes in interests.

They are often tenuous at best.  Some work and some dont and often serve as a microcosm of ideas and freindships but instead of in the real world they are centered digitally.

Sadly, from seeing some college students come into the library, I do have to agree with you. Some kids are decent and are respective and actually have a work ethic. However there are some that I shake my head at due to their manners. I actually kicked a kid out of the library one night for I was not interested in his cell phone discussion of his extra-curricular activities in living color.  There are some who are not taught patience and how to use their imaginations.

My thought are with you, Larry.

RANT coming.... Okay - as much as I have gotten impatient, annoyed and angry at my share of teenagers in my day (and will continue to do so, I'm sure) -- I think we're doing a huge disservice both to the kids and to ourselves by painting an entire generation ("with some exceptions") with the silly, immature, stupid, etc. brush.
It's easy to put labels on these kids and shake our heads in disgust. But, come on folks, WE'RE the adults. Let's look beneath the surface. Let's assume that if we got to know some of these "immature cretins" there might be something more there.

I lived near Columbine at the time of those horrible events. My daughter's school was the sister school of Columbine. The way these kids (from her school) behaved following that tragedy really opened my eyes to so many things. They rose to the occasion, they had character, they had depth. Yes - depth. Kids I had been writing off as - well, as all of the things named in previous posts - suddenly exhibited dignity, leadership, strength. Okay, this was an isolated incident, certainly not, thank goodness, typical. But I cite it because it taught me a lesson. It's too easy to write teenagers off. They make it easy for us. But let's be better than that. These are hard times to live in. Particularly when you have no real control over your life. Sure they act out. Sure they can be obnoxious. But they're still young, Very young. And  - as I said - we're the adults.

I'm going to stop preaching now. And, believe me, I can be as intolerant and unreasonable as the best of them. Ask my DD about the time I threw all her loud teen friends out of the house. So it's no saint speaking here. But, I find it unsettling to hear so many kind and reasonable people (that's YOU, DRs) not looking past the surface -- unattractive as that surface can be.
End of Rant.

myspace is working because it has become hip amongst the young teens and young adults-who-are-still-young-teens - I'm sure it was mentioned on some hip TV show - it's usually the way this stuff happens.  In two years time, these people will have moved on to the next big thing.

Turned out to be a hot dog kind of day - I had three, but they were no fat gram, low-cal dogs (1.5 grams of fat per, and 50 calories per) on light buns.  I'm getting fairly light buns, too, but that's a different story.  So, the caloric and fat intake for my meal o' the day was under 500 calories, and under five grams of fat.  That's what I'M talkin' about.  And I have room for a snack or fruit or whatever.  I have some pineapple and cantaloupe.

And then almost got to the end of THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM while preparing and eating lunch.

Bob Merrill's songs in this movie have not gotten the praise they deserve. One in partiuclar called "Christmasland" is simply lovely. Leigh Harline's background score was Oscar nominated, but the whole score deserved more attention than it received.

The ridiculous "soundtrack" album was really dialogue excerpts with Charlie Ruggles narrating and a couple of the songs thrown in. This movie deserves a REAL soundtrack album.

TOTD

I'm reminded of John Sebastion's song from the 1960's:

Why must every generation think their folks are square
And no matter where their heads are they know mom´s ain´t there
Cause I swore when I was small that I´d remember when
I knew what´s wrong with them that I was smaller then

Determined to remember all the cardinal rules
Like sun showers are legal grounds for cutting school
I know I have forgotten maybe one or two
And I hope that I recall them all before the baby´s due
And I knoe he´ll have a question or two

Like "hey Pop, can I go ride my zoom
It goes two hundred miles an hour suspended by balloons
And can I put a droplet of this new stuff on my tongue
And imagine frothing dragons while you sit and wreck your lungs"
And I must be permissive, understanding of the younger generation

Then I´ll know that all I´ve learned my kid assumes
And all my deepest worries must be his cartoons
And still I´ll try to them him all the things I´ve done
Related to what he can do when he becomes a man
And still he´ll stick his fingers in the fan

And "Hey, Pop, my girlfriend´s only three
She´s got her own videophone and she´s taking L.S.D.
And now that we´re best friends she wants to give a bit to me
But what´s the matter Daddy, how come you´re turning green?
Can it be that you can´t live up to your dream?"

I got the weirdest Emmy screener yet in today's mail. The screener for HOUSE. The DVD is encased in a vial of blood ("Blood Type - H") - the kind that's hung over the hospital bed for a transfusion. Yuck.

The American Idol screener, on the other hand, is cute. Comes in a paper bag - like the kind you'd get at a record store in the 50's. (60's?) The DVD is encased in what looks like a vinyl record.

People collect these things. And many Academy members sell them. This year there are warnings all over the place saying that they can be traced back to you, if you do. I've thrown out quite a few - but forgot to actually destroy the DVDs. Hope no one raided my garbage or I'll be posting from a cell.

Well, you can rant away, but your bias is obvious, what with having a young daughter who is most certainly of this generation.  As I said, there are exceptions to every generalization, and I painted my comments as generalization.  We've had kids on this site who were exceptions - dear reader Jenny amongst them.

But, the kids I'm speaking of are the majority, I'm afraid, and I'm afraid, unlike dear reader Maria, that I HAVE gotten to see them up close and personal, as well as hear the tales, not to mention what I see and hear with my own eyes.  Sorry, but there has NEVER been a generation of young people like this - yes, we're the adults and when we were that age compared to them we would still be the adults.  NOT EVERYONE, Maria, oh, no, not EVERYONE.  Just a lot of them.

I'm sorry, but a quick perusal at myspace and other boards only confirms what I am saying, and it confirms it loudly and clearly.  Dear reader Maria's daughter is an exception.  Would that there were more of them.  One of my closest friends for the last few years is of that age, and let me tell you that as much as I enjoy the friendship at times, the other times I have to listen and watch this twenty-six-year-old girl (and I do mean girl) behave like she's going on fourteen, and it's not pretty, but it IS hip and now and happening and I did get a good play out of it.

And our very own TPunk is obviously a major exception - a WOMAN with a brain and a heart.

Example: Thursday evening, four LACC students (two of whom were in my class), were at Bob's Big Boy in Burbank, after having been drinking for heaven-knows how many hours.  There were four policemen sitting in a booth, dining.  One of the kids thought it would be "funny" to chat the policemen up.  The policemen were not amused and told the fellow to move along.  That wasn't enough, and another kid then came over and tried to sit and chat them up - that was it, the cops called for backup, and the kids went to jail.  When I say "kids" - all are in their 20s.  They had to be bailed out, and in one case, a teacher put up a $1000 bail bond so the kid could do the show last night.  They all, to a person, blame the cops.  I mean, how stupid do you have to be - or how drunk?

Tomorrow I will interview a child actor who starred in 2 TV series in the late 40s, a somewhat controversial TV series of the 50s and another forgotten tv series also in the 50s....as well as movies and radio.

Oddly enough I would garner that barely anyone has ever heard of him even though we have probably all seen or heard him in something or other.

I am now going to watch an episode of THE LORETTA YOUNG SHOW.

As I recall my grandma told me that her mom thought dancing the Charleston was something only bad kids did.

In turn my grandma was horrified that teenage girls of the 40s would dare to wear high heeled shoes with ankle straps.

And of course rock and roll was certainly the work of the devil.

The young "adults" got drunk elsewhere and ended up at Bob's.  Cops frequently dine there and nearby Marie Callendar's and I have to imagine that they don't appreciate inebriated smart asses coming up to their table.

And lest you think this is just me being an old fuddy-duddy, I would have felt this way when I was twenty.

We obviously each have our opinions and can discuss them in a civilized manner. Which is one of the things that makes this site unique.

On another note - the marvelous production designer, Henry Bumstead, has died. He lived to be 91 - working to the end on Eastwood's two latest films. I saw him in February at a screening of VERTIGO, for which he was the production designer. He was in great form and told wonderful stories of working with Hitchcock and Eastwood.

I have to say that my experience with the kids I know who are in their teens and early twentys is very close to what BK is describing and I find it extremely disturbing.  I agree that this generation CAN rise to the occasion and I agree that there are exceptions. No doubt about that, but it isn't what I've seen either at work or through the kids I know.  Just my 2 cents.....btw congrats DR Maria, it sounds like your DD is an exception and that is wonderful.

My 20-year-old DS, who is (of course  ;)) another exception to the generalizations about his generation, gave me a lesson this afternoon on the "social tools" that we've been discussing today.  First he showed me Facebook, a mediated site, meaning you have to be part of one of the affiliated institutions to have a presence there.  When I asked him about myspace, he said, "Well, it's just crude."

François thank you for answering my question before I could ask it.  Next month we are meeting Craig & his Romanian girlfriend in Los Angeles.  Of course we have to take her to Disneyland.  I went to the park site but didn’t get a chance to see if the ride is still open.

I still remember the day Keith & I were on its A Small World.  In front of us was a couple with a darling blond hair, blue eyed boy.  They all looked so happy Keith turned to me and said “let’s have a baby”.  I smiled and said okay.  We spent the rest of the day all happy & full of smiles.  Within the year we had our own blue eyed blond baby boy, Bryan. :D

I'll just assume you weren't talking about me. I don't use words I don't understand. I also try not to use the adjective "nauseating" to describe something a person has just said. But that's just one of my quirks.

As for the civilized manner - I may be misunderstanding what's being said here -- but I wasn't being ironic when I alluded to that. I meant it as a compliment about the site.

SHEAR MADNESS ("shear" spelled that way because the play takes place in a stylist's salon) is a comedy mystery with audience interaction. At certain points of the play, the action stops and the police detective in charge of investigating the murder has the lights turned up and the audience can ask the suspects questions about their actions and activities. Sometimes, the suspects lie about what they did and the audience calls them on their lies and then the detective forces them to tell the "truth," well, the truth as far as what we actually saw.

The detective comes in the lobby at intermission where the audience can offer suggestions of further questions to persue and also get information from him on what the police lab has learned during intermission.

When the play resumes in act two, additional information eliminates some suspects while basically pointing a potential finger at three of them. Then the audience votes on the guilty party (a la DROOD), and then we get the denouement.

Very funny (the play is personalized by setting it in the city where the action takes place using landmarks and famous people from the area) and very fun. A wonderful evening in the theater since the actors have to be quick on their feet to deal with the questions that come their way, and some are so naturally funny that they can ad-lib in character and be totally hilarious.

One more note about SHEAR MADNESS. It has caught on in a big way here. It has been running about two months already, and was extended another month to the end of June. Tonight, it was announced that they were now going to play through August. It's playing in a 400 seat theater here, and the place was very full tonight despite it being a holiday weekend and in spite of the big NASCAR race being held tonight. (Of course, I'm not sure how many NASCAR fans are also fans of improvisational theater, but I'm sure there must be some.)

My biggest gripe about the younger generation is that they know or care to know nothing beyond their own generation and seem supremely proud of and content with this. It's what I call the Arrogance of Ignorance.

But as smart as I thought our generation was...look at what we've wrought:  global warming; the cretinish George Bush as president; and this God-awful resurgence of Evangelical, Far Right, Bigoted Christianity.  And we're also responsible for raising this over-indulged, self-indulgent generation that BK's bitching (and, from where I sit, fairly accurately) about.

Personally, I just hope the world can hold together until I'm dead in another twenty or thirty years and then "apres moi, le deluge." What will I care?

For now, I have my books, my music, my movies, my theatre, good friends, good conversation with said good friends, and a few other creature comforts to envelope myself in and with which to hold off the oncoming Neo-Dark Ages...and after that, it's every man for himself.

Aspects of today's world scares me... Lack of humanity and compassion that is taught and cherished. Perhaps it is something we have lost and never regain. Thinking back, my grandmother only had an 8th grade education but she always demanded respect and integrity and you were treated accordingly. I used to love having interesting conversations on politices, the environment and the world in general. He was also a great storyteller and I miss hearing his stories.

I enjoy music, the arts and the simpler things such as going for a walk, people watch, and writing..

The scary thing about the net, it has brought an end to some aspects of the innocence of humanity.

Certainly a few things I've said (especially when doing The Real A columns) have come back to haunt me - nothing terrible, and certainly many more positive things have come out of that column and this here site than negative - but, even here, if I criticize some play I've seen you can bet its director will mention it to me (has happened several times, especially at the Pasadena Playhouse) - I just forget sometimes that we have a huge number of people who read the notes every day like clockwork, and the board, too.

I wish there were some good conversation around these parts (not on the site, around LA), but everyone seems to be in their own little "myspaces" - comfortable at home by themselves, or just not sociable - I don't have nearly as many lunches or dinners as I used to do with people I like to talk to.  I wish that would change, because that's my favorite thing - to dine and chat.  I did do that a lot with my young pal, but that's all changed in the last few weeks as she seems bent on going down the crazy, immature road, and hanging around people like her.  It's sad, but I've basically moved on.
