I should get to sleep. I have a busy day tomorrow and it should be fun.  A brunch for Planned Parenthood at a friend's house. They are the best cooks, so I'm sure the food will be fabulous. Then the meeting with Bill Richardson. He's on his "Job interview" tour. Then I need to make an appearance at Nadia's dad's birthday party.  I don't know the family, so I  probably won'd stay long, but since I'm invited, I should stop by and meet everyone,.

Don't worry, BK.  You can almost always float on someone else's internet connection in the City.  And if you can't, you can do the day pass thing at any Starbucks.  There are also wireless hot zones in a number of public places, such as Bryant Park, on 42nd and Sixth Ave.

So, I think all I have today is more Disney/"Toy Story" auditions, and that's it.  I keep thinking I may have something tonight, but nothing is coming up in my schedule.  Maybe I'll be heading over to Joe Allen afterwards, I dunno.  Although, what I know I should do is just head home after the auditions and have a nice night off since it all starts back up again tomorrow.  Morning.  In any case...
Title: Re:BK GOES TO NY
Post by: JoseSPiano on August 05, 2007, 05:38:39 AM
In any case, I should get ready to head down to midtown.  I was almost late yesterday for the auditions since the trains were running "local" and on the slow(!) side due to track work.  It took just about half an hour to get from here to Penn Station yesterday.  Normally, that trip only takes about 15-18 minutes when the trains are running "local".  I don't want to be running in at 9:55 again.  So...

I hope everyone has a splendid Sunday.

Laters...

As we pulled up to the airport it was fascinating to see the lines at Delta out the door and a block long - what IS that about?  Happily, I'm flying Continental, and the lines at ticketing were still a block long but inside.  Happily, I already had my boarding pass and went directly to security which, thankfully, wasn't crowded at all.  I wasn't stopped and I went directly to President's Club, where I bought one of their inexpensive day passes, and where I happily sit like so much fish.

TOD for all DR's.

When was the first time you went to NYC?

So long ago, I barely remember

How old were you?

0

Why did you go?

After nine months of hanging around the old place, it was beginning to feel a bit confining.

What impressed you most?

The light.  Much brighter than I'd anticipated.

What surprised you most?

Doctor giving me a smack.  That's a hell of a thing

How did you get there?

I took the tunnel (bk, too, will be taking a tunnel)

Do you still have any "souvenir" or remembrance you got while you were there?

One souvenir got yanked away from me right after I arrived.  Now all I've got is some certificate

I was 8 years old the first time I went to NYC, taken during my Christmas holidays by my aunt and uncle as our Christmas present from them. My brother and I took the train from Charlotte to NYC a day or two after Christmas (they were already in NYC). Got on at midnight and arrived at some point late the next morning.

They wanted to show my brother and me New York, so we did many of the usual tourist things: Empire State Building, subway, Macy's, etc. We went to one Broadway show - MY FAIR LADY. I wanted to see THE MUSIC MAN, but tickets were impossible to get. On New Year's Eve, we went to see and hear Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Symphony at Carnegie Hall, and then endured the madness of Times Square at midnight. We then drove back home the next day in their car.

I bought a little metal statue of the Empire State Building, and I still have the MY FAIR LADY Playbill. I haven't seen that little statue in a long time.

I've spent the last couple of days in Louisville at the Galt House at the Edgar Rice Burroughs Dum-Dum. Dum-Dum in ape language (according to ERB) means the gathering of the bull apes where they all dance and screech at the moon.  Most of the "Bull Apes" in the Burroughs Bibliophiles these days are rather grey and we allow She-Apes as well.  But the fandom is getting older...I guess all things Tarzan and Burroughs' other creations do not thrill youngsters as they once did.   I went mainly to pick up a few souvenirs for Harlan Ellison and to see a few old friends like Denny Miller who was in attendance and, as always, it was great to see him and his wife, Nancy.  We had several laughs.  And I had to sign several copies of my script for the still unproduced PRINCESS OF MARS which was being sold there.

I first went to NY in 2003 wth my High School Thespian Troupe. We stayed at the Crown Royal in Times Square, and  was there for a week, our main goal being to see as much theater as possible in our fee time. Our first night there we saw Wicked (original cast) and when we came out of the theater, it had just started snowing. For me, it was my first Broadway show, and my first snowfall, and I will never forget it that feeling.

The next morning the snow was brown and gross and the people were walking fast and it was very cold and some of the magic was gone, but I still had a blast doing all the tourist stuff, and seeing six shows.

I went again on the same trip in 2004 ( different shows, and those of us who had gone the year before had more freedom. ) then in 2005 our group went to London where I saw four shows and we had no freedom since we were stuck with two other school groups.

I still have all the playbills and boarding passes, but was not really into the souvenirs. Lot's of pictures though!!

DR Adriana Patti - I was in NYC that same week!  The night it snowed, Steve and I were seeing Urinetown.  -And we had had dinner before the show at Joe Allen with DR Jason.  It had started snowing as we were walking to the theatre, and when we came out of the theatre, Times Square was simply BEAUTIFUL covered in snow.  -One of my favorite nights ever in NYC.

*Is it possible that you saw Taye Diggs on as Fiyero at Wicked.  When we saw the show the next night, I think that was Norbert Leo Butz's first night back in after his medical leave.  -And he had come back a day or two earlier than originally scheduled.

I'm heading down now to read a bit more of THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the book, and I've enjoyed it much more so far than ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. It seems a bit lighter and less hopeless than PHOENIX, and even though I know direful things are coming, so far, it's been very engaging even when bad things happen.

DR JRand - Nothing "special" about any of the chosen dance attire at this morning's auditions.  Although, there is one young woman who is wearing a white "top" (looks like a one-piece bikini) with sheer black leggings.  Consequently, you can see her "underwear", so to speak.  But it doesn't look unseemly.

Yes, that is her and et al's dance.

I love it.....does she still wear lots of green...because it sure is HER color!!!

I also happen to see this U of M theatre dance major routine.  They are using the CAMP soundtrack....

Knowing how hard it is to get SIX people into or out of a straight line and to teach ANY dance to any group...this is not bad.  The only thing I would change:  I would make that last "Jingle Bells" step an add on or pick up rather than have everyone doing it for so long....but watch the audience reaction....that DAMNED number always works!!!   ;D

As for my first time in NYC... Hmm...

I'm pretty sure my parents took me and my brothers to NYC once or twice when we kids.  I do seem to have memories of the Lincoln Tunnel and all that traffic!  And the windshield-wiper guys!!!

However, the first trip that sticks in my head is when I went up with my cousin, Richard, and his family when I was 11 or 12.  We stayed in Queens with some of his relatives.  I remember all the knick-knacks jiggling each time the subway went by.  And I also remember watching the subway doors close as one part of our group had gotten on the 1 Train, and the other part was still on the platform!  OH - And that's also when I first learned that you had to be in the first five cars if you wanted to get off at Battery Park to see the Statue of Liberty - we just sat for a while in the subway car waiting for it to move forward, then started noticing people walking through the cars.  Then there was a dinner in Chinatown at some place that served giant portions of steamed rice with their entrees.  I'm not sure I have any souvenirs from that trip, although, I'm pretty sure I bought something while I was up there.

Good morning, all! I slept very late but I was up watching both discs of the new release of THE MONSTER SQUAD, which puts the embarassing Hugh Jackman mess VAN HELSING to shame in its humorous and wonderful tribute to the Universal Studio monsters and  their horror films of the 1940s.  It was wonderful to see the film finally in its widescreen glory, and the shot of the kids and the Frankenstein monster in silhouette against the sunset is a charming summation of the whole film's success.

I may do a bit of laundry this afternoon and watch another disc of UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS.  It's a quiet day and I like it.

BK, I'll meet you at Joe Allen's around 6:45.

Thanks, DR JRand56, for the quiz!

When was the first time you went to NYC?
Dec 26-Jan 1, 1966

How old were you?
20.

Why did you go?
To see City Ballet's Nutcracker and the original cast of Thr Man of LaMancha.

What impressed you most?
So much to see and do!

What surprised you most?
High cost of living.

How did you get there?
The train.

Do you still have any "souvenir" or remembrance you got while you were there?
No.

Alas, the one NYC souvenir that I seemed to have lost track is a Playbill of Biloxi Blues from a high school theatre trip.  My drama teacher had taken some of us to see the show - we did standing room.  The show was still in previews, but I believe we caught one of the final ones.  We saw a Wednesday matinee.  We had seen Brighton Beach Memoirs (with John Cryer, Richard Nelson and Anita Gillette) the night before, and it was great seeing those two parts of the trilogy back to back.  In any case...

I lost track of the box that that Playbill - along with some other keepsakes - was in during one of my many moves in college.  However, I keep thinking - and hoping - that it will pop up in one of my many boxes of stuff that I have yet to go through.

I am finally hooked up and working with my laptop again, and I wanted to wish all of you lovelies and studlies a wonderful and happy Sunday.

I shall not even try to re-cap the amount of work, sweat (yes, dear Mz. Karen, sweat!!) over-exhaustion, sore back muscles, etc. that have been manifested in the past 6 or 7 days.  I shall just say, THANK GOD (or buhdda, or Allah, or Baayork) that it is finished and I'm starting to get unpacked in my new house.

It would not have happened without the enormous help of 2 of my friends (not hainsies) with 2 pickup trucks and a 10' x 15' open-bed trailer.  And equally, without the help of the dearest, dear DR Laura, who volunteered to help me clean, re-line drawers and shelves, and get a good start on unpacking at the new house.  That blessed woman worked like she was a victim of "indentured servitude," and she helped for 2 days in a row !!

When was the first time you went to NYC?
March 1977

How old were you?
15

Why did you go?
I was on a church trip studying apartheid in South Africa. First we went to DC where we met refugees, and people who told us what was happening. Then we went to NYC to go to the U.N. and the South African Embassy. We stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA (I think it's the Vanderbilt) It was right next to the Church Center for the United Nations where we had our meetings.  I was also hoping to meet my new pen pal at the time, Rupert Holmes.

What impressed you most?
Everything!  I loved the city. I remember thinking how wild it was that there was a store where you could really buy cigarettes that had black paper and silver tips.

What surprised you most?
That the South African Embassy wouldn't talk to us at all about apartheid and just showed us a tourist film.  And that someone I knew would be famous some day (Rupert) took ME- a kid from Iowa- to lunch. It was at the Auto Pub. I thought that was the coolest place I'd ever seen.  The back with the drive-in movie seats was closed, but they let me go back and look at it. We sat at a table that was in a old car.
The church group and I saw the Rockettes do their Easter show. I was blown away by Radio City.
I saw my first Broadway show - The Wiz.  We had seen Annie in try outs when we were on  the DC portion of the same trip.

How did you get there?
By Bus. Hours and hours and hours on that bus

Do you still have any "souvenir" or remembrance you got while you were there?
I have several. I have the stuff from our studies. I have 3 albums that Rupert bought for me at Sam Goody.  I have my Playbill from The Wiz. I still love New York and most of all I still have the friend I met that day, Rupert.

Of course, it is going to take weeks to get unpacked, sorted, kept, thrown away, organized, but at least the basics of the new house are in place..... beds set up and made, most kitchen stuff put away, a few things in the refrigerator, A/C works fine, toilet paper in both bathrooms, the big plasma screen re-mounted in the new living room, my copy of "Hope For Today" on the kitchen counter, Sugar's food bowl and tub of kibbles in place, and room for the car in the garage.

I'll hold off for a little bit on some pictures......... I want to at least get a little bit of decorating done, a few pictures on the walls, and a few accessories around.

But I must have come through it alright, because in the immortal words of "the dealer" (Daisy Clover's mother)..... "I can still heat beans, and count to 10 !"

And so now, back to some leisurely unpacking of boxes.  It is amazing to have to look at each and every object and thing that we have saved for years.  And also interesting how often my reaction is  "... and why is this still being kept?"

Happy and safe flying to the dear Esteemed Mensch.  Think of me at Joe Allen's tonight!!  And don't give anyone else a hickey, except me! :)

Ahh....the Gaudy House. I hear they've done some major renovations there in the last few years and that it's now quite lovely inside. The last time I was there, it looked like something straight out of the Brady Bunch...very dated.

DR Pogue: I hear you're a big Sherlock Holmes buff. I just started (in earnest) a large collection of the Holmes novels and short stories. Just last night I finished "A Study in Scarlet" and started up on "The Sign of the Four." Literally starting from the beginning. I've also read a couple of the short stories, which have been lots of fun. Any favorites that you recommend?

Safe travel vibes to BK!

Good audition vibes to DR Jose!

After 11 and a quarter hours on the road yesterday, DH Richard and I arrived home late last night.  We made a hospital stop in Noblesville, Indiana, to visit one of the distance learning classmates who was unable to attend last week's residency and will, sadly, not be able to complete the program.

We were very glad to be able to sleep in our very own TempurPedic bed last night.  I think the mattress in the student apartment was the one we gave away sixteen years ago!

TOD for all DR's.

When was the first time you went to NYC?  How old were you?  Why did you go?  What impressed you most?  What surprised you most?  How did you get there?  Do you still have any "souvenir" or remembrance you got while you were there?

January 12, 2002 - the day I moved here. I was just barely 25 and I moved here to live and attempt to work. What impressed me the most was that anyone could figure out where the hell they were going in Penn Station, which is where my train dropped me off from MacArthur Airport. I was also impressed by the architecture, the lights, the sounds, the smells, and the huge crowds of people, even though it was really, really cold that night. I was most surprised by the cost of living. Still am.  ;) I got here via Southwest Airlines into MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, Long Island, where I caught the Long Island Railroad into Penn Station, where I started to have a panic attack because I couldn't find my friend. I had a suitcase, a backpack and a dream... My souvenir from my first trip to New York...? My first apartment. :D

I first went in the early 80's with a friend, a theatrical lighting designer, who had a buddy pass, and we just went up for the weekend. We walked about half the length of the island because we didn't know how to use the transit system. I don't think I've ever walked as much in my life. We didn't have any money so we didn't get to do much.

Now my friend lives in NY so we see him when we go up there. I may bring him to THE BRAIN. This same friend is the person who had a copy of TFNM and we watched it way back when and would often quote from it and so in a way he's responsible for me bring here!

My first trip to NYC was during winter break of my freshman year in college, I was either 17 or 18 at the time. I came out to NJ to visit a friend and we took the train into the city. We saw How to Succeed which at the time was starring John Stamos.  I bought the souvenier program to remember the trip by.

But are the sheer black leggings "unseamly"?

When I moved into this house I was doing consulting work and often had a break of a couple weeks between assignments. I lucked out and it happened that I had a two-month break between assignments. I used that time to paint the inside of the closets and some new cabinets, then unpack. I unpacked everything I use daily and got set up on the first two floors, then put everything I don't use often on the third floor, still packed. That worked wonderfully--until it came time to set up my office and I had to unpack and organize the third floor. No more extra storage!

TOD:

My first trip to NY was a business trip many years ago. I flew in and was shocked and disturbed at the size of my hotel room. Tiny! And with walls so thin I could hear the TV blaring from both sides (different stations). Ugh! I, of course, had had no experience with NY hotels and this booking was made from a directory. I don't recall if I made it or if a secretary did. I do know I approved it.  I gave a presentation at MetLife the next day, then flew home. No time to see any shows or do much sight-seeing.

And, no, no souvenirs.

SAFE TRAVEL VIBES, DEAR BK!

It's drizzling here in Pittsburgh, with a 60 % chance of storms now, 40% later.
I'm sitting here like so much fish with a truly serious case of heartburn, well, it's not as bad as it was last night.  Last night I sat up reading, in a sitting position, for most of the night (HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS - almost done, now) so I only went into work to set up and let the other Sunday manager work the bar and dining room til 2:30.
I'm gonna try a little light lunch, then finishing watching THE RED SHOES, which I began last night after watching Esther Williams in ON AN ISLAND WITH YOU: an early film study of The Stockholm Syndrome.
Friday night, I had so much fun seeing Pittsburgh CLO's closing production:  THE FULL MONTY.
Now, I had never warmed to the OBC recording, but remain a huge fan of the British film, so my expectations weren't high at all.  Honestly, I only went because my buddy Donna Lynn Champlin was playing the Annie Golden role.  BUT. . .with low expectation, I truly loved what happened on that stage, with very minor complaints (mostly concerning McNally's book).  Donna played Vicki with a way over-the-top Buffalo accent, appropriately, she herself is from upstate New York, and her energy level was to die for.  Sally Struthers worked the stage, and the full house audience to maximum effect as Jeanette.  The guys were very, very good - and I mean this as a compliment - the were all average Joes:  James Moye, Todd A. Horman, Milton Craig Nealy, Allen E. Read, Jeremy Webb and (I'm sure that DR elmore has run into) Robert Newman of THE GUIDING LIGHT.
Tonight:  the Steelers play. . . not THEATER, they play football!

Wow! That's good to know!

Unfortunately, I am purging while I pack, so it's really going to be up to the two of us, I'm afraid. I am thinking about hiring someone to clean the house after we're out. I've never hired anyone to do that because we have so much stuff it would be impossible for someone else to clean, but this should be easy. I will have to be unpacking at that time and can't be in two places at once.

And then there's work...

TOD - Earlier this summer I celebrated the 40th anniversary of my first trip to NYC - June, 1967.  It was the summer between my junior and senior years in high school and my mother worked at a Detroit bank with a woman whose brother had some connection to Lotte Lenya.  We had Lenya's house seats to Cabaret (original cast) for my very first ever Broadway show.  My favorite keepsake of the trip is the souvenir program book autographed by 4 of the 5 principals (we didn't recognize Jill Haworth until she was halfway down the block and called back, "G'night, darlings!" in her husky voice).

I've lived in NY all my life, but I remember my parents taking me on the "tourist loop" when I was very young.  We visited the statute of liberty, the top of the Empire State building, took the circle line cruise; -- things that many NYers never do.  I remember being terribly impressed and awed by the whole thing.  I was maybe 4 or 5.

When was the first time you went to NYC?
March 1969

How old were you?
18

Why did you go?
My friend and co-worker at the college radio station where I worked, and I were going to a College Radio Convention in Washington D.C.  My friend managed to find a way through a travel agency to go to D.C. with a three day stopover in NY, for less than what the college was going to pay for the direct round trip to Washington D.C.  So the flight was free for us.  The ad agency that we worked with in NY put us up in their apaprtment in Greenwich Village.  We stayed in a little second floor walk-up at Bleeker and MacDougal.  Directly around the corner was the Sullivan Theatre, where THE FANTASTICKS was playing.

What impressed you most?
Radio City, Rockefeller Center, The Empire State Building.... All the tourist stuff.  I saw HELLO DOLLY (my first-ever Broadway show), THE MERV GRIFFIN SHOW with guests Eddie Fisher and Malcolm McDowell, and THE BOYS IN THE BAND (my first Off-Broadway show and first mostly gay theater audience).

What surprised you most?
The crowds of people, the excitement of Times Square, and the fact that I had my first legal drinking experience drinking beer at YOUR FATHER'S MOUSTACHE.

How did you get there?
United Airlines red-eye flight into JFK.  I think it took almost as long to get into mid-town by cab than it did to fly cross-country.

Do you still have any "souvenir" or remembrance you got while you were there?
The Playbill from HELLO DOLLY with Pearl Bailey and Cab Calloway on the cover and the souvenir program from the show.

You'll take the lovely large vase over what today?  There are alternatives?  A sterling silver platter, perhaps?  A crystal goblet?  Plastic hosptial pan?

Welcome back, DR MusicGuy! I spent yesterday moving, too...it's going to take weeks because we're doing it little by little, in stages, as various rooms in the new house get finished. Yesterday I filled my car just with china. Boy...that Portmeirion is some heavy stuff! Today I'm doing wine glasses and more dishes...I hope the glasses make it there in one piece!

Wow, who would have thought that China would fit inside a car!

Re TOD, I wrote this several years ago, back when our esteemed BK was still known as The Real A over at Sondheim.com.  It was the introduction to my overview of the CD to the revival of Forum.

Quote
The first show I saw on Broadway was A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Before I got to see it, however, I once again proved myself to be a total jerk, and the problem was entirely my fault.

In June of 1997, der Brucer and I were on a trip to the East Coast, a combination of visiting his family in Philly and meeting politicians in Washington D. C. He had planned the trip so that we would fly from LAX to JFK, take the subway into New York, and then catch a train down to Philadelphia where we would rent a car for the rest of the trip. What he hadn't counted on were my fears of New York City, planted in my head by scary tales my mother used to tell me and amplified by even scarier tales told in movies, television shows, and the evening news.

We got on the subway (which threw me because it runs above ground for almost the entire run through Brooklyn) and I started to get a really bad case of nerves. I didn't have a clue as to where we were or where we were going, and I tend to panic if I don't know where I am. There was nothing der Brucer could say that was going to calm me down. The fact that I was trying to carry five pieces of luggage while he was holding only two didn't help matters. We finally got underground, traveling under the East River, and my panic attack just grew and grew. There were all these nice people on the train with us, and I was absolutely sure one of them had to be a mugger. Meanwhile, der Brucer was trying to comfort me and giving side glances to everyone else, to assure them that he wasn't traveling with a complete idiot while not being too sure of that himself.

By the time we got to Madison Square Garden to switch to the commuter train heading south, I was an absolute wreck. He finally grabbed one of the bags I was carrying (the lightest one, no fool he) and pushed me down the stairs to where the train was waiting. On the trip to Philadelphia, I explained my phobic reaction while he patiently listened. Finally, he told me in his best deadpan, "We're going to spend most of the week in Washington D. C. What makes you think it's any safer there?" Which made me stop to think. My mother had lived in both New York City and Washington, and had survived both. Could her upstate New York bias have prejudiced her view of the city? "Look, on the way back we'll have some time for ourselves. We'll take an extra day, look around, you'll see what New York is really like. You never had any problems like this when we were in London." And he gave me that irritating grin he gets when he really does know better, and settled in for a short nap.

The family in Philly was fine. The politicians in D. C. were, well, politicians. I did get to do some sightseeing during that busy week, finally getting to see for myself the Liberty Bell, the Star Spangled Banner, and the Lincoln Memorial. (Strangest of all was walking up to the Viet Nam Memorial and finding myself staring at my own name, but that's another story.) Finally it was time to take the train back for a day in New York. "First things first, we get tickets for a show," der Brucer announced. "Then I'll show you some of the town." And while he took another nap, I saw the city through the windows on our right, and yes it was big, but it wasn't really frightening, was it?

We parked our bags at the luggage check at Madison Square Garden, save the one we'd need that night, and headed north to what der Brucer proclaimed was the most important landmark in New York City, the TKTS booth at Duffy Square. "I'll get our place in line, you check over the boards and decide what you want to see," he told me. So I walked up to the l.e.d. signs alone, without him by my side to protect me, and looked over what shows were playing. We'd already seen most of the really long-running shows in either London or L.A., and I knew der Brucer, given a choice, would rather see a musical…hey, wait a minute! Sure, it was late in the run, but David Alan Grier had the lead in Forum, which I was sure der Brucer never seen. He smiled when I told him of my choice, we got our tickets, found a hotel room, and headed on out for a night on the town.

First we took the subway down to the Village, and he immediately led me through several wrong turns before getting his own bearings and buying us a round of drinks at Boots and Saddle on Christopher Street. After that, we wandered around trying to find someplace good for dinner, and Mario Batali's restaurant Po just happened to have a cancellation and could fit us in. (I love when that happens! I don't recommend going to celebrity chef restaurants too often, because of the damage it can do to the bank account, but this was worth it, right up there with Rick Bayless' Topolabampo in Chicago and better than Dean Fearing's Mansion at Turtle Creek in Dallas. Sorry, Dean.) Then it was time to head back to the theater district and some "Comedy Tonight."

You want to know what was strange? I don't think I laughed once during the entire show. Der Brucer was almost in tears, he was laughing so hard. Me? I just sat there, enjoying the warmth, basking in the good spirits. This was light years distant from the New York I'd feared for so many years. Every line, every gesture was familiar to me, like I'd returned home. It was one of the most wonderful nights I've ever spent in the theater. I didn't need to laugh. I was too happy to laugh.

The next morning der Brucer asked me if I to fetch him a cup of coffee, hopefully to jump-start him into action. I went out onto the streets of New York alone, comfortable and looking forward to a marvelous day. Then I found out how much they were charging for a grande coffee at Starbucks. Nothing is ever perfect.

Batali doesn't run Po any more - he's got his fingers in lots of other pies these days, some of them pizza pies.  But by and large, this pretty well covers the TOD.

Had an interesting afternoon of viewing.

Since I didn't want to watch a documentary on the Iraq war while I was eating (not knowing what kind of gore or gruesomeness was in it), I watched a FRIEND'S episode - the Thanksgiving episode with Brad Pitt as Rachel's nemesis. Simply hilarious.

Since the documentary was only 101 minutes, I had time for a couple of BONES episodes, so I rewatched two of my favorites from Season 1. The first involved two dead bodies that were traced back to a U.S. Senator. Heartbreaking episode in many respects, and a nerve-wracking one since a mob puts out a hit on Brennan.

The next was my second favorite of the first season (the CHristmas episode was my favorite). A body is discovered having been eaten by dogs in a warehouse, and Booth and another agent (played by the hunkalicious Adam Baldwin) are both on the case.

The documentary is called NO END IN SIGHT, and I really recommend it for some insight into how conditions with the insurgents in Iraq got so chaotic and unmanageable. Excellent information gathering, appropriate talking heads (of the ones who WOULD talk to the producer-director; many like CHaney, Rumsfeld, and Rice refused to speak in interviews). The ones who did speak had convenient memories or outright lied which was proven by interviews and recorded footage that told a different story.

The documentary is pretty current, too, taking us into 2007 and the newest estimations that this war will cost when all is said and done $1.86 TRILLION.

If you have the chance to see this, you should.

It was a nice flight, but long - it used to be that it took about four and a half hours from LA to NY, but it now routinely takes five hours and fifteen minutes.  Got a cab right away, so that was good, and it only took thirty minutes to get into the city.  The apartment is very nice save for one important detail that was left out - no central air.  There's a unit in the bedroom, which I now have on full blast, and which isn't doing all that much.  And there's a fan in the living room which is currently circulating hot air, and then there's a little loft where there's a unit, and I'm about to turn that on.  Not helping matters is the fact that no one has been here in a couple of months.

And the wireless is not happening at all.  So far, on the list of networks, only two are available and both barely give me one bar of signal - all the other require a password.  She's told me the name of one network that always works, but it's not in the list right now.  So, I'm on dial-up via AOL, which, of course, is slow but not horrid.  What's slow was trying to download a simple attachment, which took twenty minutes.  I'll bring the computer with me to the casting sessions so I can do further downloads there.

Our first trip to New York was 1994. We stayed with friends living in Scarsdale (which meant we could afford to stay in NYC longer than three days). We did the usual tourist things - boat trip, Empire State, Twin Towers, Radio City etc.  Out theatre outings were to "Passion"  "Kiss Of The Spiderwoman" and "Showboat".

I think the view from the Towers really gave us more of an idea about the height of the city.

I think we were surprised that we were not mugged.  All those warnings and the publicity - surprised but not disappointed!

We came into  Central Station each day - we thought the ticketing system etc on trains was so "cute".

I still remember all those smells of coffee and warm muffins and for me, the problem of overchoice when ordering a coffee!

TOD for all DR's.

1) When was the first time you went to NYC?  2) How old were you?  3) Why did you go?  4) What impressed you most?  5) What surprised you most?  6) How did you get there?  7) Do you still have any "souvenir" or remembrance you got while you were there?

1) December, 1995 (the only time I've been)

2) 29

3) a local theater group went every other year, so I went that year

4) That there's theater everywhere...and famous landmarks...and it's all so big!

5) I never felt unsafe!  Granted, we never left mid-town Manhattan and I didn't go to Central Park, but just walking around felt so easy

6) Plane and taxi from and to the airport

7) I got souvenier programs from Sunset Blvd. and Victor/Victoria and quite a few photos and several keychains, which I collect. :) Several of us also went to see Regis and Joy Philbin (Kathy Lee was on vacation) and I got a panoramic picture of us four with Regis and I also got his autograph. :D I bought several CDs and vinyl records...the best vinyl finds being the original London cast recording of Children of Eden and the original London cast recording of 1776!!

When I got home, a CD that I had ordered arrived!  The world premiere recording of Sadie Thompson (http://www.castalbumdb.com/rec.cfm?RNumber=3849) (by "Vemon" Duke and Howard Dietz, according to the CD cover! ::)) with Melissa Errico, Davis Gaines and Elmore's close and personal friend, Ron Raines!  :D

I guess I shall now be on my way to Joe Allen to meet up with elmore and whomever else shows up.

I just saw the most nauseating thing on TV - a small choir and soloist singing some dreadful thing or other - all singers had head mics (the kind near the mouth) AND those stupid earpieces that are now all the rage.  I mean, is that what we've come to.  No one can project, it's all artificial, singers now have to wear earpieces to hear themselves.  How did singers and Broadway ever make do in the old days?  Well, they made do and you know what, it was fine.  I had the sound designer of the current A Chorus Line tell me that if they miked the show the way they did originally it would be terrible.  Only you know what - I loved the sound on the original and couldn't stand it on the revival.  Technology isn't always necessary.

To operate the toilet in the slave bathroom, you have to pull a chain, of course.

...all singers had head mics (the kind near the mouth) AND those stupid earpieces that are now all the rage.  I mean, is that what we've come to.  No one can project, it's all artificial, singers now have to wear earpieces to hear themselves.  How did singers and Broadway ever make do in the old days?  Well, they made do and you know what, it was fine....
I also blame the theatergoers, whose ability to listen isn't snuff compared to how people listened before all this miking became de regeur.

Maybe we just need to hand out listening devices to the audience members as they enter the theaters... oh, wait, then they couldn't be wearing their bluetooths while watching the show.   :P

I must apologize to all the women of HHW (as well as all female lurkers) for not having posted this weblink previously.

KOMO-TV in Seattle broke the story of IBC over a year ago for the first time anywhere.  It is indeed a shocking and frightening new story that all women should read.  I guess I was under the impression that since this story broke last year; that the story had made headlines around the entire country.  My mistake, apparently.

And for an abbreviated TOD :

First trip to NYC in mid summer of 1962.  by myself.

flew there on ?? airlines.

Saw "A New Leaf" at Radio City Music Hall, along with the (still) complete stage show, full orchestra in the pit, full Rockettes, full separate corps de Ballet, variety acts, and of course the Wurlitzer organ doing the 20 minute play in to the feature film.

Didn't get to see any other theatre that time.

Couldn't believe the vastness, looking north or south on the Avenues.

At 6:30 pm my taxi headed down 9th Avenue to 46th Street.  At 6:40 because of the heavy traffic the meter said $7.50 and we were at 51st street, the next time I looked and we were at 49th Street and the meter said $9.30.  I left the cab and walked to Joe allen's where I had a lovely dinner and visit with DR Jose and our might BK.  When we left Joe allen's at 9:00 and walked up 9th Avenue, the traffic was still piled up! What the hell is the traffic problem on a sunday evening?  The City has got to begin traffic control in this Burg.

So, I'm home, chilling out and getting ready for tomorrow: Toyland, an afternoon of auditions, and then a visit chez Skip and DR FJL.

Bruce, 5 hours plus seems right to me between LA & Newark, Philadelphia, Boston & NY.  Less time was with a good tail wind, which does happen on a regular basis.  Maybe you will get lucky on the way home.

I remember how pleasantly surprised I was when we moved to Michigan & the flight was under 4 ½ hours, & how unpleasantly surprised I was to find the planes were often smaller & less comfortable.

When was the first time you went to NYC?
Dec’1978

How old were you?
29.

Why did you go?
We had recently moved from L.A to New Jersey

What impressed you most?
The rude taxi drivers, all the honking, hot chestnut venders on the street, & watching the ice skaters at Rockefeller center.   I was very excited to see the skaters & was tempted to join them.

What surprised you most?
Getting lost in Harlem & how nice people were when I asked for directions

How did you get there?
By car.

Do you still have any "souvenir" or remembrance you got while you were there?
No.  The only money we spent was for the chestnuts, a hot pretzel & a drink.  I only liked the drink.

And in other news I decided to take my first trek up to The Valley Theater in Beaverton (about an hours drive from Salem) to see the new Bollywood movie PARTNER. It is a comedy and I had heard good things about it...it was OK. I laughed a few times, but it wasn't really all that good...it was an ok time pass, I guess.

One good thing about it was that a running gag in the plot was that the star Salman Khan would take his shirt off at the drop of a hat. It wasn't particularly funny...just nice  ;)

I watched ALL FALL DOWN tonight, recorded off TCM a week or so ago.

It's an excellent film, and both Warren Beatty and Brandon deWilde are so beautiful that it's hard not to swoon looking at them. Angela Lansbury does splendid work, and it's a role Eva Marie Saint never gets praised enough for. Karl Malden is good, too. And Barbara Baxley has a poignant couple of scenes.

Next, I watched '300' on Blu-ray. The movie is fairly hypnotic actually, and I was surprised how moving I found it to be. I particuarly like the first two battle scenes where there was a controlled battle plan and not just individuals slashing at will. That got rather tedious, but the first battles were a lot more interesting than that, and I really enjoyed them.

Because the film is so stylized, I didn't mind the violence at all because it didn't seem real.

As for the high definition encoding, well, it's eye-popping, and the sound was also totally immersive.

When '300' was over, I watched some of the special features on the disc. There was a half hour featurette on how much was true and how much was fictional about the film (and graphic movie which the film was adapted from). Educational and I'll know more about some of the people the next time I watch the movie.

There are also several featurettes on the making of the film, and I chose one of the shorter ones. It really spoils the magic to see them fighting in a studio against blue screen with shields made of plastic and light plastic spears and swords.

The muscles are real, though. There's a featurette on the weeks of training the Spartans underwent to be physically fit to represent the troops. I practically got the vapors watching Gerard Butler doing arm curls with what looked like 100 pound weights in each hand.

Since bk is going to close the thread down soon, I'm going to head on down to bed now.

Good night!

DR Adriana Patti - I guess we both had the year wrong... the year we were in NYC at the same time.  Since Wicked did not open until the fall of 2003, there's no way either of us could have seen it in January of 2003.  It must have been January 2004.  -And since we saw Urinetown during it's closing week, then that would have been January 2004 too.  ;)

I've had this "air conditioner" unit on since I arrived and it's about ninety degrees in here.

I feel your pain!

Tonight's dinner was simple: steak, thinly sliced against the grain.  Taters, baked.  Iceburg lettuce, with bleu cheese dressing and crumbles.  Tasty.

Green olives, or black?

Green.  It was sort of a high-end picadillo.

Interesting.  I'm not a green olive fan (and only like olives as an ingredient, never on their own), but I can imagine the flavor profile.

Hmm...

Well, I was a bit tired after dinner, but now I seem to have caught a second wind.  -I guess I should not have had that iced mocha (with soy milk) and those Chocolate Walnut Chewies from Whole Foods.  :)

*And I'm guessing that they probably use the same base for the filling of their "Argentinian Beef Empanadas".  -Which I have yet to try.

High end peccadillos. The very best kind.

And not to go into specifics, but... I received a wonderful e-mail from a wonderful person who happens to be a wonderful composer.  And he assured me that I'd be working with him again in the future.  :)

I'm sorry. I couldn't resist making a joke, even at the expense of a poor, deformed animal.

FORGIVE ME!!!!

I feel we will get to page eleven before I change the notes.  I actually might not change them until one East Coast time, just before I go to bed.  I'm trying to let it cool off a bit more.  Opening the windows really did the trick in the bedroom, as there's a nice cool breeze running through here which, in conjunction with the small AC unit, has finally cooled off the room a bit.

I don't think I can take 3 more weeks of moving stuff, in addition to work. But I know it's going to take AT LEAST that! Ouch---I'm too old for this.

A reminder to CLOSER fans---tomorrow night's episode is a great one with lots of great dramatic moments and a great performance by Kyra.

I'm thirsty, too. Probably because I've been sweating in a 90 degree kitchen all damn day, after which I mowed the grass at the new house. (Keeping a watchful eye out for yellowjackets!)

DH and I caught a bit of the movie SINGLES yesterday. (We saw this on one of our first dates, back in the early 90's.) Kyra was in it and looked a bit different, especially her teeth!

We both laughed when she told her boyfriend: "I don't like DRAMA".

And now she's on TNT---and She KNOWS Drama!

Speaking of THE CLOSER, I'd better get to bed so when episode 310 shows up tomorrow and I watch it, I can remember EVERY. SINGLE. SHOT.

I've posted the notes, and since everyone here has WUSSBURGERED save for Cilla and me, I may as well change the day.
