RE - Enchanted

I agree that Jon McLaughlin's bandstand turn at the end felt out of place - they'd been better off picking one of the kids from High School Musical.

I thought the integration of the CGI animals with the real-life New York was particularly well done.

Dakota,

Here is the link to

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

Audacity is completely free. It's fairly easy to use and understand. I've been using it for a couple of years.

I don't remember the other site but it was probably

Audio Record Wizard 3 (http://www.nowsmart.com/arwizard/)

AR Wizard 3 is shareware. I use it for recording live streams. I've been using it for 4 years (I record my BBC stuff with it). You can download the program and record up to 3 minutes of material but if you pay a one-time fee of $25 you can register the program and your recording time is unlimited. AR Wizard is very basic and you can't do any editing with the program but the recording function is easy to use.

I recommend both of them. You can record with Audacity (the free program) but since I'm so familiar with the recording feature of ARWizard I stick with that program for recording and Audacity for editing.

Cold and damp and overcast is our weather this morning. Supposedly, it's going to clear this afternoon but not warm up until midweek. It's December after all.

I actually sang "Ol' Man River" in an awards show skit once. The skit was about bad auditions, and I gave it my best Frank Sinatra spin.

Today I'll be looking forward to two finales:

On Showtime, there is the DEXTER season two wrap-up. Thankfully, the show has been renewed for a third season (it's one of Showtime's highest-ever rated series), but I still have no idea what's going to happen to the title character tonight who's in deep, desperate trouble of being caught.

On HBO is the final episode ever of EXTRAS. Ricky Gervais never lets his shows get stale, so he ends them after two brief seasons, and EXTRAS is no exception. I will be watching this "live" tonight.

As for the rest of my day, I'll likely be watching THE HEARTBREAK KID, the remake with Ben Stiller. Not exactly primed for this one as I know it got poor reviews and did very poorly at the box-office. But I will go ahead and watch it.

If I have any time left over this afternoon, I'll probably watch BE YOURSELF with Fannie Brice. It's an early talkie (1930) that I've never seen, so I would like to see it. If I don't get to it this afternoon, I'll watch it this evening before EXTRAS starts at 9.

I, too, did not like Mr. Travolta in HAIRSPRAY. In fact, apart from James Marsden and Queen Latifah, I thought none of the adult actors got the most out of their characters. I thought the younger actors were all outstanding.

If I had some time over the rest of this month (doubtful), I'd love to revisit John Waters' original movie. I know elements in the plot changed from screen to stage to screen, but it's been so long since I saw the original that I'd love to see it again.

Ah, then since you don't have iTunes, you can not use you iPod Shuffle then.  The iPod/iTunes/Mac/Apple format is proprietary.

I guess I should point out that iTunes can be used solely as a "Music Library".  You do not have to take advantage of the online buying features.  So, if that is your reason for not using iTunes...

I just checked in with Carlos, and it turns out he rebooked their Amtrak tickets, and they are about to head back down to DC on the 11:00am Acela.  They were going to take 1:05 train, but it was already running at least 40 minutes late.  And since it is originating in Boston... And since Boston and parts of Connecticut had a bit more bad weather than NYC did, well...

It was great seeing them again, and I really had a wonderful time being able to show my niece where I work and live, and what I love doing.  And I was especially encouraged by the fact that she actually followed almost all of what was going on in Mary Poppins - which for a soon-to-be nine-year old is quite a feat considering some adults can't keep track of that plot over the course of it's 2 hour and 45 minutes!  She also said she liked Mary Poppins more than The Radio City Christmas Spectacular.  -Although she did think the live animals at RCMH were very neat.  ;)

According to one of our baggers, TJ, lots of kids at the high school are all abuzz about Sweeney Todd, which looks to be the best musical since Hairspray!

But then, TJ doesn't really know who Stephen Sondheim is, and I doubt any of his compatriots know, either.

I was thinking of singing a few phrases from "A Little Priest" for him, but my singing would amount to disturbing the peace.   :-\

HA!

I just got a call from my friend, Mike.  He had gone up from Richmond last week to Boston for a few days of R&R.  And he is heading back down to Richmond today on Amtrak.  On train 99.  The one that Carlos, Theresa and Alexandra were originally scheduled to take this afternoon.  The one that was already 40 minutes delayed.  Well, he just called me from the train, and it looks like they'll be at least an hour to an hour and a half late getting into New York Penn Station due to weather delays.

Good morning, all! I was feeling under the weather around 7:30 last night so I went to bed and watched the first four episodes of BROTHER & SISTERS, season 1.  I'm enjoying it, I think, but Sally Fields' neurotic never-shut-the-hell-up mother grates on me.  I believe I will plow through the entire first season and see how I feel about continuing with the story.  So far, my favorite characters are Justin, the strung-out brother, and the young intern at the studio, who keeps surprising me with more skills and intelligence than one would assume.

So, today, I slept in very late and I believe I will putter here for a while, then go into midtown on an errand, come back and watch the rest of discs 2 &3 of BROTHERS & SISTERS. I want to send disc 1 back to Netflix so I'll get Disc 4 SAP.

Last night was filled with very bizarre dreams: WHERE'S CHARLEY? at Goodspeed in a revival with the same cast, but the Loesser songs were being supplemented with Jule Styne interpolations, and a dream about an old friend Jeffrey Gingold, who one day without warning dropped out of my life around 1990 to never return phone calls or keep in touch.  Jeffrey's roommate when I first knew him around 1984 was a young lady who was the cousin of the young male star of CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC. She was a believer that the casting couch was the quickest route to stardom. I got the impression it was a family conceit.

I also want to see ENCHANTED again this week - are you game DR Jose? - and I'm waiting to hear from Charlotte, who, I suspect, is much more concerned with preparing for Christmas and seeing her high school friends and boyfriend Jon than me at the present.

Dick Powell was certainly a fine light comedy actor.  His way with a line is very nice.

Debbie:  Do you think a movie needs a plot?

Dick:  Well...it helps move the story along.

Thanks for the vibes, DR Singdaw.  Fortunately, I'm not so sich that I can't putter - sometimes I think my body sees to it that I'm forced to take some puttering time.

So, I'm off to get cleaned up and go to the other end of the house to put the ornaments on the Christmas tree and watch White Christmas while doing so.

Portrait of Jenny is one of my favorite movies.

I believe it is the first major motion picture not to have any opening credits. Something which is common place now.

Also did you know there was a musical version with music by Howard Marren and lyrics by Enid Futterman? The song Remember Today was recorded by Alix Korey who also recorded two songs by Skip Kennon on the same cd.

I must check ebay and the flop on the couch and finish last night's Meena Kumari film. It is quite good.

Plot: A drinking driver accidently kills a poor farmer. The judge sentences the man to two years of taking care of the farmer's family.

My guess is by that time the criminal was so in love with Meena, he married her.

Or else he died while trying to save her from a natural disaster - in which they both perished.  8)

Hmm... Still not sure exactly what I want to do today.  I may just hop on the train down to Columbus Circle, then get out and walk in the slush for a bit and see where I end up.

Although, I do have to admit, with this crappy weather, I'm also really tempted to stay in today and watch some DVDs.  God knows, I have plenty still in the shrink wrap.  But since I'm leaving town on Thursday for almost two weeks, I really just want to BE in New York City before I take my leave of absence.

A Christmas Carol closes today.  It's been a nice run and I'm happy with most of how it turned out.  Of course, we've learned a lot from last year and probably even more this year for next year.  I really like Alan Menken's score, it's got some wonderful moments.  I'll be looking forward to putting it away tonight, but also looking forward to taking it out next September.   However, I have told the producer that I won't do the show if we cast more than 60.  There are 86 people in the cast this year, 20+ of which are dead weight, and that's being nice.  There are traditions, politics and the like that always seem to get the cast up to the 80's and beyond.  Hopefully, it's something they will learn this year.

My favorite quote of the process this year was during "Mr. Fezziwig's Annual Christmas Ball" scene. the choreographer was staging something and looked up on the stage and said, very seriously, "Ok, I need a crowd".  Everyone is on stage at the time, of course, all 86 of them.  Oy and vey.

The CGI chipmunk WAS very well done, but it reminded me of my one other little nitpick about Enchanted - the two bathroom jokes were BAD - the boots being peed on and the scared chipmunk dropping a poop.  Really unnecessary and wrong, tone-wise, if you ask me.  But, again, very minor stuff.

Thanks!  And the party was swell!  A lot of people were there (per ususal) and a great amount of food stuffs were eaten (per usual)...meatballs, a zombie cake(!), Maui onion potato chips, etc., etc., etc. (a King and I reference).  And much alcohol was consumed by those who consume alcohol (per usual).  And Michael and Heather, whose house we were at, are VERY conscious about not letting people drive drunk.  And the party-goers know that also.  Several had planned to stay over night.  A very good time was had by all. :D

I knew she'd call me when she started getting her dance card in order.  My advantage this week is that her friends from Horace Mann are still in school till Friday, so I have Tuesday-Friday afternoons with her.  We may see ATONEMENT, too, this week.  Her problem on Wednesday is a doctor's appointment at 3:15, so perhaps we could see an earlier showing of ATONEMENT.  For instance, at 12:45 on Wednesday there's a showing at 68th & Broadway that she and I - possibly our DR Jose? - could attend?

Quote
Reading between the lines with Kindle

"People who care about literature care about substance and permanence," wrote novelist Jonathan Franzen, author of "The Corrections," in an e-mail. "The essence of electronics is mutability and transience. I can see travel guides and Michael Crichton novels translating into pixels easily enough. But the person who cares about Kafka wants Kafka unerasable.

"Am I fetishizing ink and paper? Sure, and I'm fetishizing truth and integrity too."

But how can truth depend on whether the words that express it are printed on an electronic page or a paper one? Are they not words in both cases? Confronted thus, Franzen remained firm.

"Yes, in theory, words are words," he replied. "But literature isn't data. The difference between Shakespeare on a BlackBerry and Shakespeare in the Arden Edition is like the difference between vows taken in a shoe store and vows taken in a cathedral."

Virginia Postrel  (http://www.dynamist.com/weblog/archives/002671.html) comments:

Quote
…using Shakespeare as to argue that good literature must appear in printed editions is bizarre. Shakespeare presented his plays in oral form, with no footnotes and no flipping between pages. He never published his work. The folio editions came only after his death. And now they're online.

You were right the first time, Bruce. There are fifty million stories in the naked city because the stories have cloned themselves over the years. Blame it on inflation. Blame it on Jose. But the count has risen.

Then I watched THE HEARTBREAK KID. Amazing how they turned that 1970s comedy adapted by Neil Simon into a typical Ben Stiller movie (i. e. he's embarrassed at every turn by everyone including himself), and since it's directed by the Farrelly Brothers, you know there is every sex and fart joke there that they can plant.

Great transfer and there are some laughs, so it's an OK rental, but the Charles Grodin original is SO much better. I still don't understand why they feel the need to remake movies that worked out well the first time.

Today, I wore my Santa hat to work again.  Dixie, my boss, took one look at it and said "No.  No, no."

A few minutes later, she came up to me with a new Santa hat.  She didn't like the one I'd been wearing because Fletcher had eaten most of the puffball at the tip, and all that was left were these pathetic little white whiskers.

So I now have a new Santa hat with a full puffball.  When the puffball flops down to one side, it's a bit like wearing half a pair of earmuffs.

Took a short drive and stopped by my new favorite restaurant in the Valley, the Kansas City barbecue - I've now eaten there four times and each time has been great.  I took a look at the list of Golden Globe nominations as I ate, and they are just as predictable as always.  Whichever studio and/or film provides them with the most money, the most access to stars, the most courting, gets nominated.  I would wager much money that most of the nominating committee (whoever they are) haven't seen Sweeney Todd, and yet nominated its stars and director, as well as the film itself.  The most amusing nomination is Across The Universe for best musical or comedy film - this over Enchantment.  I don't have to see Across The Universe to know it isn't as good as Enchantment - two or three clips were enough for me - typical Julie Taymore twaddle.  In fact, Enchantment only got two nominations (Amy Adams and one of the songs) and that tells me all I need to know about the Golden Globes.  Why anyone takes these types of awards seriously is the big mystery - it's a handful of foreign JOURNALISTS for heaven's sake - not critics, but press people.  What has that to do with giving out awards - they'd be better off giving awards for Best Interview, Best Promotion, Best Press Whores.

DR JRand57, since you purchased the SHAKESPEARE RETOLD set, I should mention that I found the MACBETH set in a 3-star restaurant quite interesting although I had a harder time with it than the MUCH ADO because of the accents.  The Macbeths are absolutely fascinating, as are the three witches whose transformation into an equivalent urban 21st Century scavenger is quite amazing.  It's also quite bloody but very well done.

I still have DVD #2 to watch.  I want to watch MUCH ADO again.  It's nice to see Damian Lewis play a funny vain, romantic newscaster instead of a tormented cop for a change. I don't think he's in anything light, comic or romantic on DVD except for this.

Evening all!

We had some rough weather last night.  The neighbor’s tree fell in the middle of the night.

I didn’t know what happened when it woke me up about three this morning.  I just heard the loud crash then I couldn’t go back to sleep and was awake most of the rest of the night.   I got up to look around but couldn't see anything out the windows.

I was worried that it might be my tree or one of the sheds blew over or something else.

When it got light, I went outside and that's when I saw the neighbor's tree on their roof.  At least it didn't seem to hurt anything.

I didn't see that poor dog again.  It rained so hard last night and I thought about the poor thing.  I hope it found someplace safe.  I wish it would come back.  I could put it in the dog pen (which has a dog house).  I could take some pictures and post them around.

Vibes, Tom.  My childhood Bassett, Happy, had to be put down the day after Christmas 1969.  I will never forget that day, so sad.

Very sad about Fogelberg, too.   Always really liked him.

A sweet, tear-inducing time at Cinderella today--Miss Oregon's charity work is for Make a Wish, and there was a 3 or 4 year old girl and her family there today as part of their wish.  Girl has cancer, is terminal.  They're going to Disneyland tomorrow for 5 days.

Guess I need to go cry after all of this.

Time to get dinner prepared:

Roast pork tenderloin
Mashed potatoes w. mushroom gravy
Brussels sprouts w. bacon and onions

(The sprouts are still on the stalk, by the way.  They're much smaller than usual, about half the size I normally see in the store, and should be very tender.  Der B had never known that they grow on stalks, and was quite surprised to see them.)

I just gave one of our local disc jockeys a heart attack.  I called our station that plays Christmas music 24 hours a day from Thanksgiving thru Christmas Day.  Their music, for the most part is already pre-sorted so that they don't repeat a lot of songs each day.  Well, I just called the D. J. and asked that since Dan Fogelberg had died today could be possibly slip in SAME OLD LANG SYNE.  He started to answer that he would see what he could do, but he stopped and said, "What did you just say to me?"  So, I explained that Dan Fogelberg had died this morning.  He asked me all these questions about his death, and said he hadn't heard anything about it.

Cilla, I'd say OK to the housing, but only if you are given the right of veto.  (No tail-pullers allowed.)  You could help give a young person's life direction and focus, but that doesn't mean giving up the direction and focus of your own life in the process.  And make sure you don't get overrun with the young people - set limits.

The problem is they will be here doing the hard core crunch time campaign volunteering. Which means they may be getting here at all hours of the night - maybe crashing for a couple hours and going again. All they want is a place to crash and a shower.  I have a ton to do and I think it would just be too disruptive for me right now.  Having lived alone so long, I do not sleep through noise in the house.  I may volunteer and work with them that way, but only when I have time.

I went to the memorial service today for the conductor that I assisted for 10 years. It was very emotional, because he was so well loved and such a part of Atlanta's music scene for 50 years. There were many people who said that they would never have gone into music were it not for the free pops concerts Albert and his orchestra played every summer. He always found the funding himself and thus was never rich, but certainly he was rich in friends.

It was great to see so many of his original musicians attending and there was lots of great music and funny stories recounted. (He was quite a character!)

The event ended by playing his album "Hooked on Country" (I worked on the sessions for this and it was a Grammy nominee) as walk-out music. If anyone was sad as they were leaving, this certainly lightened the mood and was the perfect touch.

I've still been kind of weepy all day, even though he lived an amazing life to a ripe old age of 97. (His mother lived to be 105!)

Thank you Ben, you are a dear!

I was not impressed with John Travolta either in the role.

I'm attempting to upload a Brain clip on youtube.  Edisaurus gave me a quick time movie of it, but the file was huge, and none of us could figure out how to compress it down - until I had a brainstorm today.  I put the movie into iTunes, and it automatically puts it in mp4 format to upload it to the iPod, and it compressed it down to 56 megabytes, which is fine for youtube.  The upload, however, according to the youtube site, can take up to a minute per megabyte WITH high speed.  That means a bloody hour to upload one three minute clip - how in tarnation do people put all those videos on youtube if it takes that long PER video?

Blizzardy conditions here!
nothing was happening when I went on my 2:00 break, but, by the time I left Borders at 5pm - - hell had broken loose!
What normally takes me seven minutes to drive took me THIRTY-SEVEN minutes!
Not a salt truck in sight; not a snow plow, either.

We were on the phone with Craig about then, no wonder he said it hadn't stopped coming down.

His wipers don't work well since he sort of broke the mechanism that makes them go back & forth.  He has to give them a jump start.  I hope he gets them fixed soon.

What time does it get dark there these days?  Craig was headed out to take Yogi for a walk before it got dark, I suspect he ended up walking in the dark.  At least he has street lights.

Thank you. The original image is actually smaller, but it doesn't look too bad stretched, so I may leave it alone for now. I made it at http://www.lunaii-dollmaker.com/

That's a brilliant solution I never would have thought of...let me know if it doesn't work because I'm going to be mixing at the place tomorrow where  should be able to shrink the movies.

And yes, it does take a very long time to upload this stuff!

I had to search the news after reading it here.  That happens far too often, to my amazement.

Keith played his music and opened his website. It is a nice site.  At the bottom of his bio he mentions getting exams and blood work for prostate cancer at the age of 50, 40 if it runs in your family.  To add to that, I say begin at 40 if ovarian cancer runs in your family.

Lovely pictures, DR Jose.  I love the ones of the skating ring.  I think of the time I skated there.  :)

Hugs also to DR Dakota Celt.

You know I got a card the other day from a friend that I only talk to through Christmas cards.  I'm going to have to make it a point to write her--anyway I told her in my card that my Mom passed away this year but I didn't really say when.

When she wrote me back she said that her Dad had passed away as well.  On May 18th.  The same day as Mom.  How strange is that?

Also when I went through some old papers I found my Baptism Certificate.  You guessed it -- May 18, 1958.

And if that's not enough for you, my other niece, Marie was born on---May 18th.

Spending this weekend listening to 24 hour a day Christmas music has been great.  It is wonderful to connect every year with Bing, Perry, Andy, Judy, Burl,Johnny, Barbra, Brenda, and all the other artists that are part of my Christmas memories.  It occured to me that if they didn't play Christmas music on the radio each year; most of this younger generation would never know any of the music of these artists.  It is a very small glimpse at these musical geniuses, but it is all that there is of them for most young people.

Ginny - What fascinated me about their job doing those windows is that they work all year and it all boils down to a reveal of about one minute or less; I think that's kind-of the way one of them described it, but I'm paraphrasing.

The Macy's guy doing research by hard work going on roller coasters was loads of fun, though.

I began the evening watching all of the special features on the HEARTBREAK KID DVD. Most of the stuff isn't very interesting, but it does give them a long list of stuff to add to the liner notes on the DVD box. There are four deleted scenes and two extended scenes, and the extensions to those two scenes would have been better off in the movie. I thought both added important information to the understanding of characters.

What time does it get dark there these days?  Craig was headed out to take Yogi for a walk before it got dark, I suspect he ended up walking in the dark.  At least he has street lights.

It's usually dark now by five-fifteen/five-thirty.
Much needed are windshield wipers in this weather, between the salt, the snow, the ice, the rain and the splashes from the other vehicles on the road.
I bought a couple of bottles of an ice-melting spray for car windows, I never leave home without a bottle.

I had over two hours before the start of the TV shows I was going to watch, so I put on HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. It looked very nice and the PCM sound is great, but I didn't find it a revelatory step-up from the sDVD I already had. Probably because so much of it is dark, misty, gloomy. HD can't provide much dimensionality when the image is shrouded in gloom.

If you have them and make me a copy I would be so grateful or know who may have recorded them and if you could point me in the correct direction, I would be just as grateful.

There are 26 songs (some I know have been recorded, but can’t seem to find them online and others I am not sure if there has ever been a commercial recording of them)

Facts of Life (Mercer)
The Falcon & The Dove (Rosza/Webster)
Second Chance (Previn/Langdon)
It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (Gold/David)
So Little Time (Tiomkin/Webster)
Where Love has Gone (Van Heusen/Cahn)
Ballad of Cat Ballou (Livingston/David)
Til Love Touches Your Life (Ortolani/Hamilton)
Life Is What You Make It (Hamlisch/Bergmans)
Marmalade, Molasses & Honey (Jarre/Bergmans
Strange Are the Ways of Love (Fain/Webster)*
Love (Bruns/Huddleston)
I Feel Love (Box/Box)
Wherever Love Takes Me (Bernstein/Black)
Now That We’re In Love (Barrie/Cahn)
Richard’s Window (Fox/Gimbel)
A World That Never Was (Fain/Webster)
He Danced With Me/She Danced With Me (Shermans)
If We Were In Love (Williams/Bergmans)
Cry Freedom (Fenton & Gwangwa)
Shakedown (Faltermeyer & Forsey & Seger
I Love To See You Smile (Newman)
Promise You Will Remember Me (Coppolla/Bettis)
Look What Love Has Done (Sager & Howard & Ingram & Smyth)
Make Up Your Mind (Newman)
That’ll Do (Newman)

* There is another song with the same name by Tiomkin &Washington. I am also looking for that as well.

I'm a big fan of HAIRSPRAY: THE MOVIE, mostly because of Adam Shankman's surprising direction and energetic choreography, which IMHO is NOT harmed by the editing.  There is a focus to what Shankman does with his actors - especially John Travolta's Edna.  Though cut from the same cloth as Divine's Edna and Harvey Fierstein's Edna's, this is a character that I actually care for, and the little tentative steps taken out of the apartment during "Welcome to the 60s" clinched Travolta's Edna for me.  I'm not a Travolta fan by any means, and my one great acting coach worked with Travolta on TWO OF A KIND and had horror stories to tell about THAT experience, and I went into HAIRSPRAY expecting to be majorly disappointed by his Edna.  I can also finally listen to Edna's singing, something I had to skip over every time I listened to the Broadway Cast recording since I cannot tolerate Harvey's singing voice.
That's horse-racing, folks. . .
I still cannot believe that the same director gave us THE PACIFIER (Vin Diesel + a duck + children)!
There are some very clever bits in HAIRSPRAY, many which bring sheer joy to my heart, but even with Travolta's Edna being a feminine  creature, I still feel the acting honors go to Nikki, Michelle (who is also  as much fun in STARDUST), Christopher Walken, James Marsden, Paul Dooley, Elijah Kelly and Queen Latifah.
Loved HAIRSPRAY on the big screen, and love it on dvd.

It was an interesting dinner. There were 9 of us. The guest of honor was Pete Corroon, the mayor of Salt Lake County, not Salt Lake City. http://www.mayor.slco.org/html/maBio.html  He was quite pleasant and surprised me when he said "This has been a long day, I could really use a beer".   Anyway, it was a very fun relaxed dinner, lots of humor.  He is Howard Dean's first cousin.

Closing night vibes to DR George!

Thanks!  Today, we had a great show and a full house...on a Sunday matinee, even!  I feel a little better now than this morning when I felt like total crap :P but I'm very tired and will go to sleep soon.  I woke up this morning and my voice was an octave lower than normal!  I got through the show without much trouble, so that was good.  We struck the set (and ate some pizza during the striking of the set) and then I came home.

BK sometimes i find you are very harsh on things that are not bad at all.  You said you wanted ST to be better and you dismissed HAIRSPRAY the movie like it was crap..

bk dismissed Travolta but said some kind things about the film overall:

Quote
I liked Nikki Blonsky as Tracy very much, and I liked Amanda Bynes as Penny, although she never quite erased the memory of Kerry Butler. I enjoyed James Marsden as Corny, Queen Latifah was fine, and so were most of the supporting cast (and I liked Mr. Waters’ cameo). Christopher Walken is just strange as Wilbur, and I’m afraid that from my point of view, Mr. Travolta is a complete disaster as Edna. I don’t know what the voice or accent is, but it’s dreadful, unfunny, and it kills any chance the film had. Equally bad are all the changes from the show version – all of them are for the worse, and none necessary. Tracy almost takes a back seat during the last ten minutes of the film, and it’s a mistake. I certainly thought there were a few entertaining moments, and perhaps with a better director and Mr. Mitchell’s original choreography, this could have been something more than the mildly entertaining thing it is. For me, a major disappointment.

In the bk lexicon, calling something "mildly entertaining" is hardly dimissing it as "crap" - bk does not damn with faint praise, if he thinks it's total crap there will be verbal feces from the rooftops!

RE: SWEENEY TODD. I am very much looking forward to it. But i loved HAIRSPRAY (as did a lot of people).  I know everybody has their own opinions. But BK sometimes i find you are very harsh on things that are not bad at all.  You said you wanted ST to be better and you dismissed HAIRSPRAY the movie like it was crap (when there are some really crappy movies out there).

Regardless i'm sure ST will be a totally different type of movie.

I just call it the way I see it, as everyone should, and I think those who read the notes expect it of me.  All I ever want is to enjoy and love what I see - and sometimes it happens, as with Enchanted, but Hairspray simply didn't do it for me.  As I said, I enjoyed a few of the performances and thought some of it was okay, but I thought Travolta basically killed the film, and there were changes from the show that weren't good.  That said, many people loved it - it's all just horse racing and none of it should be taken seriously.  Opinions are like tacos - everyone has one.  No, that isn't right.  Opinions are like gazelles - everyone has one.  No.  Opinions are like teeth - everyone has one.  Yes, that works - well opinions are like tooth, everyone has one.

If you have them and make me a copy I would be so grateful or know who may have recorded them and if you could point me in the correct direction, I would be just as grateful.

There are 26 songs (some I know have been recorded, but can’t seem to find them online and others I am not sure if there has ever been a commercial recording of them)

Facts of Life (Mercer)
The Falcon & The Dove (Rosza/Webster)
Second Chance (Previn/Langdon)
It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (Gold/David)
So Little Time (Tiomkin/Webster)
Where Love has Gone (Van Heusen/Cahn)
Ballad of Cat Ballou (Livingston/David)
Til Love Touches Your Life (Ortolani/Hamilton)
Life Is What You Make It (Hamlisch/Bergmans)
Marmalade, Molasses & Honey (Jarre/Bergmans
Strange Are the Ways of Love (Fain/Webster)*
Love (Bruns/Huddleston)
I Feel Love (Box/Box)
Wherever Love Takes Me (Bernstein/Black)
Now That We’re In Love (Barrie/Cahn)
Richard’s Window (Fox/Gimbel)
A World That Never Was (Fain/Webster)
He Danced With Me/She Danced With Me (Shermans)
If We Were In Love (Williams/Bergmans)
Cry Freedom (Fenton & Gwangwa)
Shakedown (Faltermeyer & Forsey & Seger
I Love To See You Smile (Newman)
Promise You Will Remember Me (Coppolla/Bettis)
Look What Love Has Done (Sager & Howard & Ingram & Smyth)
Make Up Your Mind (Newman)
That’ll Do (Newman)

* There is another song with the same name by Tiomkin &Washington. I am also looking for that as well.

Did I miss the post?  Who is this addressed to?  In any case - A Second Chance has several recordings, including the version on the soundtrack LP, which I have transferred to CD.  Is The Falcon and the Dove the lyric to El Cid's love theme?  If so, that's on a Cloud Nine CD called Great Epic Film Scores, which I have, and it should be on the soundtrack CD, too.  Marmalade, Molasses and Honey is on the soundtrack to Judge Roy Bean, available from Film Score Monthly, I have that, too.   Mad World is on the soundtrack - oop, but I have it.  So Little Time is on the 55 Days At Peking CD, which I have.  Ballad of Cat Ballou is on the Capitol soundtrack LP, which is not on CD - I have a sealed copy.  But that single track is on a CD called Nat King Cole At The Movies - have that.  If you can find out what the others are from, I can check various CDs.

My goodness, The Two Jakes was too long - 134 minutes.

C'mon - in the grand epic days of the 50/60's we felt cheated if a film came in at under 150 minutes!

Quo Vadis - 171
Ben Hur - 212
Exodus 208
Around the World in 80 Days - 167

And even plain old dramas:

Anatomy of a Murder - 160
Doctor Zhivago - 197
A Star Is Born - 154

Any film that ran under 90 minutes was relagated to double-bill status.

Didn't show too much forethought in leaving my keyboard at my mom's when I moved. Now I'm in choir with no way to rehearse at home! DUH.
And my friend/director lives in Long Beach...just a little too far to drive for extra rehearsal time.

And my copy of FNM is still at home somewhere. I double checked the dvd case before I packed it...empty! I'm a bad fan. :(
