Well, you've read the notes, the notes had control and you could see and hear them, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're in the outer limits right now.

Well, George has shown up.  But will he post?

Yes, I will post. :)

I came home late after leaving work and finally watched the two-hour finale of "Grey's Anatomy."  It's always sad when they build up a certain story-line and the characters that you most want to live, don't.  But that's TV.  Overall, I thought that it was a very good season ender and I can't wait for next season to start!

Topic of the Day:  Murder Most Horrid (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Murder-Most-Horrid-Vol-1/dp/B00113NWW8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1212652505&sr=8-1).  It's from England and it's finally available on DVD (PAL, region 2), starring Dawn French (of "French and Saunders").  I watched this show on PBS long before I ever heard of "Absolutely Fabulous" or even "French and Saunders."  I think it's very funny! ;D

The one DVD that's available is the first series (season) and has six episodes.  I haven't heard anything about any other seasons being released on DVD (one Amazon.co.uk reviewer mentions a fourth season!). :-\ Each episode deals with someone dying (humerously and horridly ;)).  Dawn French is the only regular performer on the show...from what I remember.

I've not been much of a TV watcher since about 1960!
Of all the anthologies released I have none. I would consider buying Australian Series "Mother and Son" - fine writing and wonderful acting. The series did not outstay its welcome.  Some of the UK shows lie "Open All Hours" and "Porridge" I remember enjoying - but not enough to invest on a purchase. I've been more of follower of Drama such as "Six Foot Under", "Carnivale" etc.

I have enjoyed
M*A*S*H, Cheers, Frazier and the early years (before the total dumbing down) of Friends, but I would not bother with an Anthology purchase.

I doubt I would watch 10 hours of TV per week.

I had to buy a new battery for my car today.  I had six years from the last one.  Expensive of course - unless you use the comparative approach: a new battery is about the same cost as two tanks of petrol.

Good morning, all! Today my morning is given over to Brain surgery, and my afternoon will be spent with Victor Herbert and his shows. Around 5:30 or so, I hope to meet our DR Jose for dinner, and then he and I will attend the Men's Chorus concert, which is being given at FIT, which is a very short step from Toyland.

I think this job for Daniel Rodrigues is coming up on the agenda today, which would be nice, so I'd better get to work.

Hi, Julie,

Newbie goes away at 51 posts if I recall correctly.

I think Gypsy and 39 Steps are good choices. I'm not a fan of Xanadu but both Fred (FJL) and Jose like the show so there you have it. We've been over the pros and cons before. Many people (Larry (Elmore) and I are in a small minority) find the show wonderfully funny and a great take on a very, very, very bad movie. I respectfully disagree.

You should be able to get half-price tickets for August: Osage County at the TKTS booth. It's a big hit but it's still on half-price. The mezzanine tickets are actually better (in my humble opinion) because of the set design. You get to see the whole picture easier than if you're sitting in the orchestra. The Music Box Theatre is small anyway so wherever you sit your view will be OK. I do recommend August: Osage County. It's 3/12 hours of family dysfunction but the time flies by and it's very funny.

June 3: This photo provided by NASA shows the area where the Phoenix Mars Lander's robotic arm took a second scoop full of soil and revealed a whitish material at the bottom of the dig area informally called the 'Knave of Hearts.' The robotic arm's scraping blade left a small horizontal depression above where the sample was taken. The science team is debating whether this is a salt layer or the top of an ice table. The image was taken by the Surface Stereo Imager on the ninth day of the Mars mission, or Sol 9, (June 3, 2008) aboard the NASA Phoenix Mars Lander.

RE: LIFE

They just released the Canadian tv fall schedule. And LIFE is on here (on the canadian channel) on Fridays.

Do any of you know if that is the same day it will be shown in the US? That does not seem like a good day for the show.

Yes, NBC has scheduled LIFE for Fridays at 10 p.m. Their thinking was that this was the time period where two crime dramas flourished: HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS (for many years) and LAW & ORDER: SVU (for a year and a half before it was moved to its current Tuesday slot).

My feeling is that the TV landscape is VERY different from the time when those two shows did well on Fridays. True, NUMBERS on CBS does well in the slot, but even LAW & ORDER had a hard time making a go of that timeslot. And I remember that the fabulous show BOOMTOWN was moved to that slot and sank without a trace (pulled after three episodes). So did MEDICAL INVESTIGATION, another promising medical procedural.

So, I'm concerned about the placement. I'm hoping that NBC might try it on another night if it fails to draw a crowd on Friday. Sunday or Monday might be more promising.

THE TWILIGHT ZONE was and will always be my favorite anthology show. I liked THRILLER and THE OUTER LIMITS, too.

I was very young when the great drama anthology series like PLAYHOUSE 90 and THE UNITED STATES STEEL HOUR and STUDIO ONE were regular features on TV. In the past decades, I have watched many of those shows' most famous broadcasts on kinescopes.

I do remember Loretta Young's anthology show with a little more clarity and always liked it (and her).

Sorry about the continuing troubles with your Sylvania TV, DR JMK. I would be out of my mind with frustration were that to happen to me.

My best friend John has been having trouble with his three and a half year old Toshiba (it's a rear projection model). After three service calls to attempt to fix it via various means, it seems they feel something else is wrong (main circuit board) and he's in the market to just junk it and buy something new. He had bought two projection lamps for it that he's going to try to sell on Ebay to attempt to salvage some of his money, but I think that TV is a lost cause.

bk - As for Cubby Bernstein and Xanadu... Well, yes, it's basically a joke, but it's a joke in the way that Xanadu was considered a joke when it was first announced as a stage property.

And Xanadu is not the only show campaigning for the Tony.

*I also think that "they" know that Xanadu doesn't have a chance for the Best Musical Tony up against In The Heights and Passing Strange.  I'm looking it at as a very clever and funny way to drum up some more business in general - which it needs.  In the meantime, I look forward to the remaining episodes - they make me laugh.

Well, if the Virgin Megastore space goes the way of the rest of Times Square, most likely, another hotel.  :-\

You will remember where you first heard about the demise of Virgin - I predicted the Broadway store would be closing, because I received some insider information.  They chose to hang on in NY, close their flagship store in LA and other stores elsewhere, but the writing has been on the wall for two years now.  Soon, the only store options will be Target and Best Buy and that, for me, is the end of the retail music business - which is nauseating and pathetic.

I'm not sure if Lasenza is a canadian company. But it's a big lingerie store.

Anyhow every year they have a huge wearhouse sale where everything is $1-5. It is crazy.

This year in their ad they put "no long line-ups" which is clearly not the case.

They give you a plastic bag and women run around like crazy. Normally i am not into such things. But i decided to try it (since this year the sale is 5 minutes from my house).

Luckily i did not have to wait very long (just for them to open the doors). Although there were a couple hundred others there waiting too. But at least no line-ups at the cash.

It's crazy. tshirts are $2. Giftsets $2. Only bras and pjs and sweaters and stuff like that were $5.

How sad to hear about Mel Ferrer's passing.

He was the last living link to my earliest moviegoing memories.  My earliest recollections of going to movies was 1956 when I saw, among others (but most memorably), "Anastasia", "The Ten Commandments" and "War and Peace."  He was a wonderful Prince Andrei  for Audrey Hepburn's Natasha in that latter film.  The stars of all those films are now off to other adventures in other realms.

I remember going to one in NYC.  There are a lot of them here (in most malls). And a big one downtown!

I just remember being surprised at how many stores they opened here in NYC.  They had a great flagship store on Broadway a couple blocks up from Tower Records- which made for some crazy "Who has the best sale? shopping".  Then they opened a couple smaller stores all over town in some pretty prime locations - including one off of Times Square.  Over-exposure and over-saturation among other issues.

But, I really did love shopping at HMV.  Since they were/are a London-based company, their Classical Import selection was always a pleasure to browse. *And their Classical Annex had its own "store" and entrance, so there was no "outside music" to deal with from other sections of the store.  Additionally, they would automatically put any new Broadway releases on sale when they came out, and they would stay on sale for a couple of weeks.

How long would i have to boil it for first so that i won't have to keep it on the grill forever?

Re:  Cheers.  My sister-in-law was Production Manager on that series for most of its run (as well as a million other tv shows and films).  Their house is full of lots of memorabilia from the show, including directors' chairs and a really neat artist's rendering of the bar that I think hung on the set toward the back.  On the final two-part episode (the one where Shelley Long came back), they had all the production staff appear as extras in the bar, and you can see DS Betsy's brother and his wife (the production manager) stage right sitting in one of the booths pretending to have a conversation.  :)

Boil it?  There's no need to boil it.  You can cook it all on the grill.

However, I have heard of people cooking their chicken in the kitchen first - boiling, baking, broiling - the finishing it on the grill to add that BBQ/grill/smoke taste to it.  -But that just sort of defeats the purpose of grilling, imho.

Are you doing bone-in parts?  boneless chicken breasts?

In general, setting up a "hot spot" and "not so hot" spot on your grill helps.

That's what I've heard.  Do you know what the big differences are?  Are the dishes similar?

The main differences - which are understandable - are the truly authentic ingredients: vegetables, spices, oils.  He's been invited to many a formal and informal Chinese dinner where he hasn't been able to identify what he was eating.  -And his hosts couldn't really explain what he was about to eat either - at least not in English.  His biggest problem is the seasoning and spicing - and not necessarily the "heat" factor.  The range of flavors in Hong Kong is far greater than it is Stateside.

Well, if you were planning on putting it on the grill for 20 minutes after precooking it, you'd have some pretty over-cooked chicken.

Just treat the grill as you would a saute pan and oven in regards to cooking times.  It's just a different way to get the heat into the chicken, a different method of cooking.

Here's a general chart of grilling times from AllRecipes.com:

Breasts
6 to 8 ounces  Direct     Medium /High   10 to 15 min./side   165 F (75 C)

Boneless Breasts
4 ounces   Direct   High   6 to 8 min./side   165 F (75 C)

Legs or Thighs
4 to 8 ounces   Direct   Medium /High   10 to 15 min./side   165 F (75 C)

Drumsticks
4 ounces   Direct   Medium /High   8 to 12 min./side   165 F (75 C)

Wings

When all I had to cook out on was an hibachi grill, I often put chicken breasts in a pan, added whatever seasonings and marinade I wanted, and put them in a slow oven (F 300 degrees)for about 30-45 minutes.

Then I'd take them out, pour off the marinade and then cook the chicken on the hibachi, adding any kind of sauce I might want to finish it with.  I considered this an essential procedure since the coals in the hibachi did not last long enough to cook raw chicken sufficiently through.  (It was a small hibachi!).

I am cooking some chicken on the BBQ tonight (grill outside).

I really have no clue (i'm emailing my mom after i type this to see what she thinks). I guess i would want to keep it on the grill for like 20 minutes max.

RECIPE CZAR (http://www.recipezaar.com/97340) advises:

Quote
Grill chicken until well browned on both sides, turning once, 30 to 40 minutes (meat near thigh bones should no longer be pink when tested with the tip of a knife).

FYI.

All grills are different temperatures so.

Take advantage of indirect heat --.

If the chicken browns to quickly finish over indirect heat.

All grills have hot spots so watch and be sure to move the chicken to make the cooking of the chicken complete and satisfying to your needs. As the time of the year make grilling quicker or slower. So take care and watch and enjoy you food as it grills.

Your very own FOOD TV CANADA (http://www.foodtv.ca/grilling/GuidesPost.aspx?sectionID=194&postID=37072) advises:

Quote
The best way to judge doneness isto use a digital meat thermometer. Whole chicken should be cooked to 185F (85C), chicken pieces to 170F (77C) and ground chicken to 175F (80C).

der Brucer

(If when they come off of the grill, the joint is still bloody, pop it in the microwave for a minute or so.)

Well, if you were planning on putting it on the grill for 20 minutes after precooking it, you'd have some pretty over-cooked chicken.

I never cook chicken legs on the stovetop (only in the oven for 1 hour).

This is the same chicken that in the oven would take 1 hour at 375F.

I know if i just put it on the grill (for up to 20 minutes) that it would not be cooked.

My mom had 2 ideas. One was to boil it for 10 minutes first. The second was to bake it part way through.

The thing is i don't care if i only put it on the grill for 10 minutes. I just want it to be cooked!

Thanks for all the chicken advice/info.

I don't want to be out there for 40 minutes (which is how long i think it would take).  I don't have a meat thermometer (i really should get one).

But i do know how to tell if it's ready. So that at least is good.

I like the idea of baking it at 300F like DR RonP said. Although i'm not sure if i want to turn on the oven. I think it may be okay today. But it is supposed to get extremely hot here the next 2 days.

Does your grill have a lid?  If you can cover your grill, that would help things a bit.

Buy one of those aluminum pans and put your chickens inside, preferably on one of those cooling grills for cakes or draining pans inside roasters, and put on your grill and cover it when the coals are "almost" ready for cooking.  Let the pan stay there for about 30 minutes.  THEN, remove from grill, take the chicken and transfer to the actual grill.  Baste with whatever sauces you prefer and let it cook until done.  Since you are doing chicken legs, that won't take much more than 10-15 minutes or so.

3-1/2 HOURS OF FAMILY DYSFUNCTION - that should be a great title, shouldn't it?

When I was in Side Show, the guy playing Terry told me that he didn't like performing the song, "Private Conversation" because it was "Eight and a Half Minutes of Angst."  That could be the title of the prequel. ;)

Just got an e-mail announcing the first LA reading (READING) of a major new musical (part of the LA Festival) - The Times, by Brad Ross and Joe Keenan.  Say what?  NEW?  NEW?  I believe I recorded a song from this score back in 1995 or so, and I believe the show had been kicking around for years prior to that.  Also it had a few productions, I think.  A little peculiar, I think, but what do I know?

This might sound dumb, but don't all BBQs have lids?  I keep my food covered the whole time i grill.

I have those aluminum pans. But i did not really want to heat up the grill for that long.

But thanks for the tips.

As an anthology, there will be no regular sitation or regular characters; the story and people change each week. The title tells you all you need to know about the show: it's a horror/thriller type of show.

Or at least, that's all *I* know about it.

More like and/or in conjunction with iTunes.  -Which has offered 99-cent downloads since they began (I think).  And for just 50 cents more, you can download a "loss-less" music file.

So, what's a "loss-less" music file?  I've never heard of that (although, I must admit that I haven't been to iTunes in a while).

Another very hot (for early June) day with temps in the upper 90s. Looks like summer has arrived early here. And no rain at all in the forecast for the next five days. We're already running four inches behind for the year and added to the 12 inches behind from last year, wew're still in drought conditions.

My friends who used to make wonderful barbecue chicken, told me they always partially cooked in the microwave before putting it on the grill.  It was pretty great.

Today at work, I received a package from www.soundofmusic-shop.de...which is fortunate, since I had ordered the two enclosed CDs and had them sent to my work!  Even though it's not tomorrow, in my CD player RIGHT NOW is:

Boscos Endins (http://www.soundofmusic-shop.de/CD_INTO_THE_WOODS_-_Original__Spain_Cast_2008.html), the original Spanish (Catalan) cast recording of Into the Woods! :D

George, I can't even think of a comment about that.

Cilla, of course there are exceptions to the stage door madness.  You have no idea what goes on - people doing stage door when they haven't even seen that performance, doing it ten or twenty times - all you need to do is read the chat boards.

I sat in the orchestra third row on the house left side.   I could see most everything, but not the far upstairs unless they were actually sitting on the bed.

Boy, does it feel like tornado weather outside. Whew!   We are under a PDS warning  Particularly Dangerous Situation.  My, that sure is comforting.  We had rain wind and hail this noon, but it's supposed to get bad tonight.  I did put a transistor radio and a flashlight in my closet under the basement stairs.  I figure that's the best place in the house to go.
There were 46 reported tornados in Nebraska and Iowa south of here yesterday.

JulieC40, nice to see you online.  You are really going to love New York, but be careful you don't pre-plan too many shows or too many activities before you get there.  You are going to want to have enough time to just enjoy the city; and you want to have enough free time for doing things that you hadn't even considered doing until you got there.  I think the shows that you already have tickets for are all good choices.  You are going to have a wonderful time.

We had an unexpected but wonderful visit with VixDeb or DebMom or whatever we want to call her!!!

The phone rang, I looked at Caller ID and saw Mann with a Long Island area code and thought is that a friend of Anthony's? No, it was Deb. She was in the city and wanted to have a quick get together. She graciously came downtown to our place (she's never been here) and we had a very nice visit for about 45 minutes. She is now on the subway back up to Grand Central. She will then get to her car and drive back to Long Island! I'm tired just typing it out.

By the way, the girl looks GREAT! She's lost almost 50 pounds now and she is beautiful (not that she wasn't before). I hope everyone can see her with her new svelte look. Congratulations to Vixmom!!!

Tonight at 9:30pm I will see ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE with Laurie Mitchell, Eileen, and maybe Beverly Washburn. Kenny has retired to his room for the evenining. Singdaw has one with Elvis painted on it and "SING-GOD" in rhinestones.

Hugh "Baby" Jarrett has joined the choir invisible.

Most people might not recognize his name, but he was a member of the Jordanaires, the group of singers who backed Elvis. Hugh had the deep bass voice. He lived a few miles from my mom's house, and he would occasionally work with our pops orchestra. He was a famous DJ in Atlanta back in the 60's and is in all the music hall of fames, I think.

Anyway, I got to know him when I worked on a movie he was in back in the mid '80's. He was a very sweet guy and very patient with me when I bugged him to tell me stories about his days in rock & roll.

He was in a car accident, and then in the hospital, eventually his injuries got the best of him. Ironically, his grandson also died in a car accident a few days ago. After one of those big storms, several trees were down in the road and I guess he didn't see them. What a sad week for their family.

I thought the concert was at 7 and it was at 8, which gave me an extra hour to socialize with our DR Jose, but made for a very long and tiring day. There were moments of the concert I lked but because of the set up, tickets to be picked up were slowly handled and the show started late. Intermission seemed endless. I thought there were wonderful moments but that it all went on for too long.

Now, I'm watching the finale of STEP IT UP AND DANCE.

Good Evening!

I'm sorry I wasn't able to meet up with DR vixmom earlier, but I was able to meet up with DR elmore.  We had a great meal at [brgr (http://www.brgr.us/), and after a stroll through Chelsea - which included a stop in at Madeleine Patisserie for some macarons - we headed back to the FIT auditorium for the chorus concert.

As DR elmore stated, there were some highlights and some not-so-highlights.  But, all in all, a very fun evening.

So, what's a "loss-less" music file?  I've never heard of that (although, I must admit that I haven't been to iTunes in a while).

It's a higher quality download - and, consequently, a larger file to download.  It's basically a true CD-quality file, instead of the usual modified iTunes file.

Other sites are offering Loss-Less files now too.  -Especially some of the Classical Music companies.

Truly the best advice so far.  Truly!

You want to leave NYC a little tired, but not totally exhausted.

DR Jose, our W Hotel in Atlanta has a restaurant called Spice Market, which is an off-shoot of one in NY. Have you been there? It sounds intriguing... (and expensive...).

Ah, good ole Jean-Georges!

It's a pretty good restaurant.  Alas, the location here in NYC has gotten VERY trendy, and the place is always crowded.  It can be an expensive meal, but I've had better "luck" with their appetizers and small plates - which also seems to be the consensus among most of the professional reviewers.  The menu was inspired by Asian street food from various countries, so, consequently, the more basic dishes seem to work better than some of "inspired-by" dishes.  -But your mileage may vary.

OH!  Great cocktails!

Well, HAWAII FIVE-O is now put to bed, and I'll be starting a Criterion disc tomorrow. I already have it cued up in the player. Doesn't look like it has a ton of bonus features but some. It's one of their $29.95 discs, so those usually don't have as much content as the ones that go $10 higher.

DR Jose, Your advice is definitely being taken.  We are scheduled for a day tour that will take us all over and also includes an hour cruise so we can see the Brooklyn Bridge, Statue, and such.  Should be fun.  Do you happen to know any good music places where Billie Holiday might have played back in the day?  I adore Billie, I think I own everything she ever did.  Yes, really, even some bootlegs. *lol*

DR JulieC40. I have to echo everyone else's advice about non-planned time.  I try to go to NYC a couple times a year. Don't forget the time to wander endlessly or to go to Serendipity for a frozen hot chocolate, or just hang out in Central Park or Bryant Park and watch people.

OR, make some plans that you don't mind changing. if you can be flexible about stuff you will have a fabulous time. Not that you wouldn't anyway, but I've found that flexibility is key

...And while walking through the East Village earlier, I happened upon a still sort of new-ish coffee place, Abraço Espresso (http://events.nytimes.com/2008/01/30/dining/reviews/30briefs.html?ref=dining).  It truly is just a coffee shop.  No real seating area, and each cup of coffee/espresso is ground and brewed/dripped to order.  And they also have a small selection of sweet and savory selections.  Today, I tried one of their Cured Olive Cookies - basically shortbread studded with black olives.  In short, an amazing combination of sweet, salty, buttery, briney and yummy!

However, you can get a very good shake and/or ice cream sandwich (graham cracker with blueberry, peanut butter cookie with chocolate, etc.) at the 'wichcraft (http://wichcraftnyc.com/) ice cream kiosk in Bryant Park which is just three blocks from your hotel.
