Title: THE CRYSTAL BALL
Post by: bk on June 18, 2008, 12:25:34 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had balls, and now it is time for you to post until the crystal cows come home.  They're currently gazing into their balls and frankly are fascinated by doing so.

I watched last night's 2-hour episode of "America's Got Talent."  It's always interesting that they show so many people/performers who really shouldn't be on the show.  Some of the performers were very good, but not all.  And the audience for a so-called "talent" show, is very much like a typical Jerry Springer audience (he is the host).  I'm glad that I can record the show and fast-forward through all the crap that isn't a performance.

Good morning, all! Another day with the NYPL and Toyland. This afternoon I turn over the Daniel Rodriguez medley to the conductor, so I've got about 20 bars to finish scoring before then.

I'm not at all upset about the break-in at my dad's house. I wish the damned thieves had torched it when they left; then we could have collected the insurance on the place. The house has been sitting empty for 27 months, and everything remotely wanted was removed 27-12 months ago.  Theproblem has been getting the remainder of thecrap in it taken away, and last year, when my dad's estate had the money to hire a crew to do it, the Macbeths refused to be helpful, and I couldn't dump everything on Randy. On my trips back last year, I couldn't get any support to handle a crew or the cleaning out of the house, so I stopped caring. In November, when I paid the estate taxes, I told my brothers that, so far as I was concerned, the property was now our concern and no longer the estate's.

The burglars were clearly scoping out the situation and aware that no one was regularly showing up at ther property.  I'm only glad that Randy wasn't on the property when they were robbing the place.

Good morning!

Thanks to DR CP for sharing that lovely Cyd story.....she was still quite glamorous in her interviews and remembrances that show up on TCM from time to time, although she seemed to have a problem with one of her eyes.

I too am surprised to learn that she was only 5'6".

MR BK - were any of the SEE-lebrities or Executives involved with THE OSCAR in attendance at the premiere?

When I watched it this time, I noticed a man introducing himself at the party as "Pereira, I'm in art direction...." - must have been Hal from Paramount.

Last night was Canadian Idol's Toronto week. Where 200 went down to 22.

One interesting thing to note is that of the top 24 (they changed it last minute) we got to know everybody save one or maybe two people. And i'm hoping that when i see those people i will remember them from previous shows (they did not show them last night).

I feel bad cause the one girl i do not remember seeing is from montreal.

Another interesting point is that there are 14 guys and 10 girls. They always do it evenly (like AMERICAN IDOL). But the guys were so much more talented.

And they wanted to make it very emotional at the end. Because the last two people in the room were the guy and girl who were cut last before the show (last year).

They didn't really show them at all auditioning this season. Just reminded us of their stories from last year (i would have rather they showed us what they'd done this year).

But like other shows (i'm thinking so you think you can dance), when they bring back someone who just about made it, they don't bring them all the way to the end to reject them again.

It looks like it will be very interesting.

For the first time there are 2 brothers in the top 24. I knew these guys would make it from their auditions. One brother especially is amazing.

I liked a lot of "America's Got Talent" last night.  However, the cut-aways to Jerry Springer during the opera singer's performance was completely inexplicable.  Did we NEED Springer telling us the obvious...that the audience was standing?  And a few moments later...that the judges were standing?  I totally don't get the editing.  It was as if he wished to rob all the emotional power out of that last auditioner.

For all those dipping into their DVD collections for great Cyd Charisse moments, I cannot recommend highly enough her number from "The Desert Song" in "Deep in My Heart".  It's Charisse at her most sensuous and beautiful.

And if you have "The Harvey Girls", watch for the young, fresh Charisse dancing in several numbers.

Yesterday the first Deep Discount box came, and I was HORRIFIED that Warners used full-sized Amray cases for the Bette Davis films. That box is ridiculously large. I know they were selling those films separately, but why or why couldn't they have used slim cases?

Here's a link to a video from American Movie Classics on Science fictions movies into stage musicals.

BTW, bk, the reporter (Kevin Maher) is a big big fan of yours; when he saw you were involved with the recording, he told us:  "I grew up watching "Spaceship" (aka "The Creatute Wasn't Nice") over and over. "  But he didn't include any genre spoofs in general, in the report, which is very short.  STARFIGHTER has only 15 seconds of a 3-minute-or-so or so report.

Warning: There's a brief car commercial before the video report. After clicking on the link, you have to click on Gollum if you want to see the video.

Most coverage time-wise is about LORD OF THE RINGS, but LAST STARFIGHTER had 15 seconds of pics and commentary at 1 minute, 44 seconds in.

I am in the office.

I have a cheesy omelet (not rancid, though) and some extra crispy bacon for brekkies.

I was expecting a "What happened to your eye?" query from the lady at the shop where I bought my breakfast.

Instead, I was treated to a glimpse at her unmade-up face.

She was "in the process" of doing her makeup, but had not gotten to her eyes or eyebrows.

Suddenly, I don't feel hideous at all.

I have the original sheet music, signed by Percy, of both Maybe September and Glass Mountain.  One of my proudest moments as a musician was being able to perform Maybe September for Ray Evans many years ago.  He told me Percy would have loved my piano playing, which really touched me very deeply.  He had tears in his eyes when he came up to me, and I am insisting to this day they were tears of joy.  ;)

By changing ONE (count it, ONE) letter in the title of this motion picture, it could be something wholly different:

"To Fill A Mockingbird" -- adventures in Chinese cooking!

Jrand, to be a tad indelicate, I think the problem with Cyd's eye might have had to do with some bad plastic surgery.  Her eyes were perfectly fine when I knew her.

I have to make shepherd's pie for dinner tonight.  My sister is tricky (even though it's one of my niece's favorites). While we were on the phone yesterday my sister asked my niece what she wanted me to make her for supper tonight. And my niece said "shepherd's pie". Well i only found out after i said yes, that my sister had told her to say that! :)

But...are you in a sufficiently rural area that acquiring a shepherd is easily managed?

I have not. It ususally starts around July 4th or so, doesn't it? I hope so 'cause I need my fix, and also to get the bad taste from the last season out of my mouth.

And since I didn't end up continuing with THE MOLE (it just wasn't as interesting as I had remembered it to be), I need something to watch.

Yes.  However...

Part of my reason for heading down was to see my parents before they fly off to London.  They'll be spending a few days there before sailing out of Dover on a 12-day Scandinavian Cruise.  Well, it turns out my Mom never really gave me the right date for their departure.  Well, she gave me the date they were sailing, but not the date they were flying.  As I found out yesterday, they're flying out this afternoon.  So...

I was also hoping to spend some time with my brother, Mike, and his family, but I guess that will have to wait until I get back from Ft. Lauderdale.

Title: Re:THE CRYSTAL BALL
Post by: Ron Pulliam on June 18, 2008, 10:19:33 AM
Someone once noted that a Southerner can get away with the most awful
kind of insult just as long as it's prefaced with the words "Bless her
heart" or "Bless his heart." As in, "Bless his heart, if they put his
brain on the head of a pin, it'd roll around like a BB on a six-lane
 highway."

Or, "Bless her heart, she's so bucktoothed, she could eat an apple
 through a picket fence."

There are also the sneakier ones that I remember from tongue-clucking
types of my childhood: "You know, it's amazing that even though she
had that baby seven months after they got married, bless her heart, it
 weighed 10 pounds!"

As long as the heart is sufficiently blessed, the insult can't be all
that bad, at least that's what my Great-aunt Tiny (bless her heart,
she was anything but) used to say. I was thinking about this the other
day when a friend was telling me about her new Northern friend who was
upset because her toddler is just beginning to talk and he has a
Southern accent. My friend, who is very kind and, bless her heart,
cannot do a thing about those thighs of hers, so don't even start, was
 justifiably miffed about this.

After all, this woman had CHOSEN to move South a couple of years ago.
"Can you believe it?" she said to my friend. "A child of mine is going
to be taaaallllkkin' a-liiiike thiiiissss." I can think of far worse
fates than speaking Southern for this adorable little boy, who, bless
his heart, must surely be the East Coast king of mucus. I wish I'd
been there. I would have said that she shouldn't fret, because there is
nothing so sweet or pleasing on the ear as a soft Southern drawl.

Of course, maybe we shouldn't be surprised at her "carryings on."
After all, when you come from a part of the world where "family
silver" refers to the large medallion around Uncle Vinnie's neck, you
just have to, as Aunt Tiny would say, "consider the source." Now don't
get me wrong. Some of my dearest friends are from the North, bless
 their hearts.

I welcome their perspective, their friendships, and their recipes for
authentic Northern Italian food. I've even gotten past their endless
complaints that you can't find good bread down here.

The ones who really gore my ox are the native Southerners who have
begun to act almost embarrassed about their speech. It's as if they
want to bury it in the "Hee Haw" cornfield. We've already lost too
much. I was raised to "swanee," not swear, but you hardly ever hear
anyone say that anymore. I swanee you don't. And I've caught myself
thinking twice before saying something is "right much," "right close"
or "right good" because non-natives think this is right funny indeed.
I have a friend from Bawston who thinks it's hilarious when I say I've
got to "carry" my daughter to the doctor or "cut off" the light. And don't
get me started on "I'm fixin' to..."

That's OK. It's when you have to explain things to people who were
born here that I get mad as a mule eating bumblebees. Not long ago, I
found myself trying to explain to a native Southerner what I meant by
being "in the short rows." I'm used to explaining that expression (it
means you've worked a right smart but you're almost done) to newcomers
to the land of buttermilk and cold collard sandwiches (better than you
think), but to have to explain it to a Southerner was just plain
weird. The most grating example is found in restaurants and stores
where nice, Magnolia-mouthed clerks now say "you guys" instead of
"y'all," as their mamas raised them up to say in polite society. I'd sooner wear white
shoes in February, drink unsweetened tea, and eat Miracle Whip instead
of Duke's than utter the words, "you guys." Not long ago I went to
lunch with four women friends and the waiter, a nice Southern boy,
you-guys-ed all of us within an inch of our lives. "You guys ready to
order? What can I get for you guys? Would you guys like to keep you
 guys' forks.

Lord, have mercy. It's a little comforting that, at the very same time
some natives are so eager to blend in, they've taken to making
microwave grits (an abomination), the rest of the world is catching on
that it's cool to be Clampett. How else do you explain NASCAR tracks
and Krispy Kreme doughnut franchises springing up like yard onions all
 over the country?

To those of you who're still a little embarrassed by your
Southernness, take two tent revivals and a dose of redeye gravy and
 call me in the morning.
 Bless your heart!

(My personal favorite was uttered by my aunt who said, "Bless her
heart, she can't help being ugly, but she could've stayed home.)
 --author unknown

OREGON WOMAN PLANS TO PARADE TOPLESS ON JULY 4

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

ASHLAND, Ore. —
A woman seen frequently in Ashland riding topless on her bicycle says she plans to be in Ashland's Fourth of July parade free and independent of all clothing but a hemp G-string. The Chamber of Commerce says that's contrary to the rules for the family celebration. She says she'll sue if she can't parade as she wishes.

Jen Moss has been known as "The Naked Lady" since she moved to Ashland in May from Ojai, Calif., drawn by the town's nudity laws. They specify only that people must cover their genitalia in a city park or the downtown commercial district, which means Moss need not cover her breasts.

Yeah... That Courtney is something else.  I'm wondering if she read the release in regards to just how much she would be on TV - and how they would edit her remarks and appearances.  -Strangely enough, I believe I know who her husband is - the actually owner of the property - and I find it kind of surprising that so much has not happened in regards to the renovation.  We shall see.

The pool was very relaxing this morning. It is a heated pool, and today the heater needed to be turned on since it was only 78 when we were there, and the water in the pool was 84. Got just enough sun to be starting a nice base. As busy as I am now, I doubt I'll get to the pool as much as I did a few summers ago when I was going two or three times a week and got very brown.

I mean, I went from having no discs to review to FOUR discs to review in one 24-hour period. Today is the main came the horror film THE RUINS from Paramount.

Then I put in THE FURIES. I had never seen it before, so it was an eye-opening and very enjoyable film. Walter Huston's last movie, and he has a very memorable part in it. Can't believe he didn't merit an Oscar nomination for it. He's fabulous. Stanwyck is as good as can be, but I think she's probably 10 years too old for the role. Wendell Corey seems a pretty dull man to be the love of her life. Too bad it couldn't have been Jeff Chandler or Jack Palance or someone with a little fire. Judith Anderson also had a very memorable supporting part. Beulah Bondi had a couple of nifty scenes, too.

Really enjoyed the story and the black and white transfer is just superb. Audio had a little hiss but otherwise a strong mono track.

And since I actually have made these "Touch of Grace Biscuits" before... And since it happens to be quite a "easy" biscuit recipe - no rolling out and cutting invloved...  And since I know all of us DRs like recipes, well...

Quote

Touch of Grace Biscuits

Adapted from “CookWise” by Shirley O. Corriher (Morrow)

Time: 40 minutes

Nonstick cooking spray
2 cups self-rising flour, preferably a low-protein Southern flour like White Lily
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons vegetable shortening
2/3 cup heavy cream
1 cup buttermilk, or as needed
1 cup bleached all-purpose flour, preferably low-protein flour like White Lily, or as needed
2 tablespoons butter, melted.

1. Heat oven to 425 degrees, and arrange a shelf slightly below center of oven. Spray a 9-inch cake pan with nonstick cooking spray. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the self-rising flour, sugar and salt. Work shortening in with your fingers until there are no large lumps. Gently stir in the cream, then enough buttermilk so that dough resembles wet cottage cheese. (If you are not using low-protein Southern flour, this may take considerably more than 1 cup buttermilk.)

2. Spread one cup all-purpose flour (not self-rising) across a plate or pie pan. Using a medium (about 2 inches, No. 30) ice cream scoop or spoon, place three scoops of dough well apart in flour. Sprinkle flour over each. Flour your hands. Turn the dough in flour to coat, shaping a ball and shaking off excess flour as you work. Place each ball in prepared pan; biscuits should be touching one another. Continue shaping until all dough is used.

3. Bake until lightly browned, 20 to 25 minutes. Brushed with melted butter. Invert onto a plate, then back onto another. With a knife or spatula, cut quickly between biscuits to make them easy to remove. Serve immediately.

Yield: 12 to 14 biscuits.

I'm really rather dreading watching it. I'm not a big horror/gore fan. Something like CLOVERFIELD is fine with more suspense and minimal gore, but THE RUINS is something I'm a bit apprehensive about watching.

And it's the UNRATED version too so they can increase the gore and language quotas. Argh!

I know I am hopelessly behind the times, but I just last night started watching HAIRSPRAY.  I would say that had it not had the stunt-casting of Travolta, it would be an out and out classic.  The musical sequences are staged exceedingly well, IMHO, probably some of the best musical stagings I've seen in musicals (not that there have been that many to choose from) over the past decade.

Well, DR Jane's neighbor could use some scrunchies - but not for foot wear:

ASSOCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,368283,00.html)Keith has all the fun!

The ex-police chief got that nudity law passed ::)  Yet recently the city placed a ban on statues and figures on sidewalks in front of businesses, including the most photographed spot in town.  The bear sitting on the bench in front of the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is now in the window behind bars.  I don't have a photo of the bear, however here is one of a lion that has been sitting on the sidewalk for years.

These cute statues & stuffed animals around town may be replaced by planters with flowers.  I've seen the standing planters and they are not very attractive & are lacking in charm & character.

Oh, and this has been posted here before, but here's (http://www.hometownfavorites.com/) where to find some of those regional foodstuffs that you can't find elsewhere.

I love that Hard To Find Grocer.  I could go broke in that place.

I found the bear on YouTube! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=BuFC0haV9ok)

It gets a bit silly and long but you can see how ridiculous it is the bear is no longer permitted to sit on the bench.  Tourists seemed to love having their photo taken with the bear.

Not anytime soon.  This is the world premiere pre-Broadway run.  As soon as it's done here, it's heading to NYC!  And I'm seeing it the VERY FIRST NIGHT!!

I wonder what will be cut after that first performance?? ;)

Oh, probably about six songs and an hour's worth of jokes that didn't land.

DS Rob and his girlfriend did some errands for me here in town and then took my car, loaded with furniture they brought back from Michigan, to Cincinnati.  After they got everything unloaded, they came back here for the wonderful spaghetti dinner that Richard cooked for us.  While Richard and Rob cleaned and installed our whole-house fan, Mary Linda and I watched the first half of Funny Girl.  They wanted to get back to UC tonight, so we'll have to see the second half, including the Swan Lake parody, another time.

For the past several days, the weather has been cool enough here to have the windows open and that fan makes it very pleasant throughout the house.  It could stay like this all summer, as far as I'm concerned.

Watched a few more Mannix episodes - interesting thing: Beginning with episode thirteen, no more original scores - all tracked music from the previous episodes.

I watched all of the bonus features on THE FURIES. Actually, there was not all that much. An ancient interview with Walter Huston (Herbert Hoover was still President), an interview with Anthony Mann's daughter, and an interview with Mann done on the set of A DANDY IN ASPIC which he never finished (completed by Laurence Harvey). Some stills and the trailer.

And, of course, the audio commentary which was very learned but dry and a bit of a struggle to listen to since the speaker's voice was rather halting.

Next, I have a hankering to return to Hogwarts, so I put in the Blu-ray of HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. Wonderfully entertaining revisiting the movie. Spotless picture and uncompressed 5.1 sound that rocked the house on many occasions.

I ended my evening watching Monday night's episode of THE MOLE. Naturally I was disappointed to see the evicted party leave as this person seemed to be settling finally into the game. Ah, well. I do have my new suspicion about the identity of the Mole, and this person was no eliminated tonight either.

You're not supposed to.  ;)

*But carrots help supply some texture and sweetness to the finished sauce.

Well, it took me a couple hours, but I installed all 5 shades tonight. And just as I finished and was thinking that I wish I had time to paint the walls now, the painter who didn't show up last summer called me!  He said he's hit a lull and doesn't have anything to do right now. He wondered if he could do the outside work we talked about last year. I told him yes and that I want an estimate of the inside work - living room, dining room and hallway up the stairs.   If it isn't too crazy, I'm going for it.  Then I can really get this place the way I want it.

The shades are pretty cool. Bali double cell cellulose. They have a really high energy efficiency rating and are supposed to be very inslating. Exactly what I need in the living room.

Thanks.  I was going to wait until I had the walls painted, but Penneys had a 60 percent off plus 15 percent off of that and I got another 10 percent off for opening a charge account.  I couldn't beat that price so I bought them.

Tomorrow morning I have a meeting with a local group that is being formed to prepare in case there is an immigration raid here in the future.  It should be interesting. I have a million things to catch up on during the day and then I do a short presentation as part of the City of Sioux City's immigration forum.  I haven't gotten that prepared yet, but it's only 20 minutes of a very general overview. I can whip that up in no time.

I had to laugh when the painter called. Apparently I told him some story about how snow was coming in the cracks between the windows that he didn't fill in. LOL, that's just so far from being true. I told him I was just probably trying to make him feel bad for blowing me off. He said he got over it.  I think he'll work out fine.

OHHH I just discovered that The Steppenwolf Theater Company is doing a new Tracy Letts play, SUPERIOR DONUTS when I'm in Chicago in August.  I'm thinking I'll try to see it. It would mean a seminar in the morning, a baseball game with Justice Alito in the afternoon and a play at night, but it would be really fun to see them in their home theater.

Listening to Elmer Bernstein's Bernard Herrmann album, which is better than I remembered - prior to that I was listening to Salonnen's Herrmann album, which is worse than I remember - very heavy and muddy-sounding.
