Well, you've read the notes, the notes were reel, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in Virginia doing the reel.

And here's how you do the Virginia Reel:

The dancers line up in two lines of 5-7 couples, partners facing each other. Traditionally men would line up on one side, and women on the other, but that is not necessary. The lines have a head and a foot, with the head couple being the nearest the band or music source and the foot couple at the other end of the line. This formation is the same for any version of the Virginia reel.

Head lady and foot gentleman forward and back.
The head lady and the foot man advance diagonally toward each other four steps, the lady curtsey and the gentleman bow, and retire four steps backward into place. The head man and foot lady do likewise immediately.

Forward and turn with the right hand round.
The head lady and the foot man advance, join left hands (shoulder high), make one complete turn and return to places. The head man and foot lady do the same.

Forward again with the left hand round.
The head lady and foot man advance, join both hands straight across and make one complete turn, then return to places. The head man and foot lady do the same.

Do-si-do (pronounced dough-see-dough)
The head lady and foot man advance, pass each other right shoulder to right shoulder, and without turning, go around each other back to back and retire backwards to places. The head man and foot lady do the same. Repeat the Do-si-do by left shoulder.

Head couple down the centre and back.
The head couple join both hands and chasse (side slip and close) down inside of the lines four steps and return to the head position.

Right arm to partner and reel. (Right to centre, left to the side.)
The head couple link arms and turns around once and a half. (This leaves the lady facing the men's line and the man facing the ladies line). The head lady turns the second man (the second man from the head of the line) once around in his place with left arms linked, while the head man does likewise with the second lady.

Head couple then returns to the middle and turns each other again (once around) with right arms linked, and move on to the third couple.

This is continued until they reach the foot of the lines, where they turn half way around only, instead of a full turn, so that the lady ends up on her side and the man on the men's side. The head couple then join hands across and chasse (side slip and close) with side steps back to the head of the set. They drop hands and turn out ready for the march.

The march
The head couple separate. The man turns outwards and walks toward the foot directly behind the men's line, followed by all the men in single file. At the same time the head lady does the same thing on her side of the set.

Then the head couple meet at the foot of the set and walk together to the head of the set, followed by the other couples. When all have reached their original places, all the partners, except the head couple, join hands and hold them high to form a long archway under which the head couple, with hands joined, walk quickly to the foot, where they remain. The original second couple now become head couple and the whole pattern is repeated until all have been head couple.

OK now, everybody try!   ;D

For Amy:

RESTORATION (http://blogs.wsj.com/developments/2008/06/21/use-a-machete-and-shower-less-five-manly-ways-to-go-green/)

Quote
Use a Machete and Shower Less: Five ‘Manly’ Ways to Go Green
Gwendolyn Bounds reports:

Author David Giffels spent the last 12 years salvaging a 1913 Tudor mansion in Akron, Ohio. (Billiards room, solarium, the whole bit.) By salvage, we’re not talking saving a few hardwood floors or old banisters. The house was on the brink of being condemned, with animals living inside, a badly leaking roof, rotting floors, strained electrical and plumbing systems and a collapsing garage.

Giffels paid a mere $65,000 for the privilege of fixing it up — mostly with his own two, often-bleeding hands — and now lives there with his wife and two children. His journey is chronicled in the new book “All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-Down House” published by William Morrow.

Q: What are five going green tips for life you’d give guys who think eco-stuff is for wimps?

A: First, make friends with a guy who tears down buildings. My Dad is friends with a guy who does that in Akron; he’ll be tearing down a school with gargoyles and stuff and thinks it’s all garbage. My Dad takes a gargoyle home and makes an incredibly gorgeous sculpture out of it.

Second, learn how to landscape with a machete. Instead of firing up the chainsaw and using gas to trim the branches, use the machete to hack a path. Plus, you’ll look so cool sharpening it with a stone. Sit on the front stoop with a toothpick and sharpen your machete and you’ll never be f—– with.

Three, shower less frequently. You can tell your wife that you’re saving the earth.

Four, ride a motorcycle. It saves gas. My wife has always been anti-motorcycle, but she brought it up recently. If you ever wanted a motorcycle, now you can do it with a moral imperative.

Five, conserve water by drinking your whiskey straight.

And the word of the day is: CHAD!
As a name:

Quote
From the Old English name Ceadda which is of unknown meaning, possibly based on Welsh cad "battle". This was the name of a 7th-century English saint. Also, a country in Africa bears this name, though it originates from a different source.

Good morning, all! I have to cart some things down to Toyland before I go the the 42nd Street NYPL. After that, I shall head back home to see if a certain check has turned up in the post. I'm currently in the midst of my work for Ms Kim Criswell, a dear friend and talented performer whose abilities as a singer and comedienne still amaze me. I'm grateful for the work because it diverts my angst from the current financial mess caused by this too-late check.

Good morning!

I was able once again to sleep with the windows open, the attic fan running, and the central A/C off, but this promises to be the hottest day in about two weeks, so I've already had to shut the fan off, close up the house, and flip the A/C back on. Hasn't kicked on yet since the house is still relatively cool from last night, but it'll be on within an hour, I suspect.

As I was coming to the site just a minute ago, the UPS man pulled up with another review copy. This one is STOP-LOSS, a movie that didn't do much at the box-office but starring Ryan Philippe. Even if the movie is no good, he'll be pleasant to look at.

However, it went into the stack of other things coming out on July 8th: THE RUINS, SUPERHERO MOVIE, CANNON, and JAKE AND THE FATMAN.

Yes, one of 2.  I think it's a matter of differing opinions between 2 of the physicians in our family practice group.  The ironic thing about this whole experience is that, of the 4 guys in the group, the one I've always liked the least is the one who's been most thorough and forthcoming.

Hope you're not working on a deadline today!   :)

We are in an end-of-fiscal-year lull/panic.

The lull means I cannot pay any bills between now and July 5.  The lull means I cannot requisition any purchase orders to get work done between now and July 5.  The lull means I must maintain "to do" folders for July 5.

The panic means that while I am "maintaining" my folders, others are scrambling, oh! yes! Scrambling!, trying to get things that cannot be done "done".  It makes me "Lahf"!  :D

Some of the "sweat grenades" get tossed my way, but I just lob them back, not caring one whit where they land.

It's always the same story at the end of the Fiscal Year (new FY starts July 1).

I am crossing my fingers, toes and eyes that one of my Deep Discount orders arrives today.

My first order arrived about 10 days after it shipped. My second order has yet to arrive, and I keep looking for it each day.

Not that I have any time to watch anything contained within, but it's still anticipated!

Did I mention (I forget!  Yes, I do forget!) that I received a nice letter from the IRS Saturday telling me that my "economic stimulus check" will be mailed June 27th?

It's a nice amount.  It's not the max.  It's not the minimum.  But it's nice.

Our very own JMK in his otherwise excellent review of Fanny, wrote: "Technicolor by the 1960s just wasn't what it used to be, and this particular film seems to be a bit on the yellow side."

This is the sort of statement that causes so much confusion and misinformation about transfers and color, and it should be amended immediately.  IB Technicolor prints in the 1960s were amazingly beautiful.  That was how Fanny was printed and it had no yellow/orange bias at all in the IB prints.  What you are talking about here is a TRANSFER element problem, not a photography problem.  They were given an incorrectly timed element and didn't do anything to help it in the telecine room - it's that simple.  It has nothing to do with the great Cardiff original photography or how the original IB prints looked (which Cardiff approved).  For years, this was a problem on Cardiff's masterpiece, Black Narcissus - the elements used for various transfers were on the yellow side or even the green side.  Everyone incorrectly assumed that that was the way Tech was back then, just because they'd never seen a true IB Tech print of it and because those transfers were otherwise excellent (not the Criterion, which was and is terrible).  When the French DVD came out two years ago we finally had a great transfer that actually looked like the film's original look and it was amazing.  DVD is never going to replicate exactly, but this French DVD came close.

Point being, take some of that yellow/orange out of the Fanny transfer, and voila, you're much closer to the original look of the IB prints.

Robert A. Harris has a column up at TheDigitalBits.com (http://www.thedigit albits.com/ articles/ robertharris/ harris062408. html)where he discusses some of the problems being forced upon Blu-ray DVDs with unwitting persons insisting on total grain removal -- the main topic of discussion is the Blu-ray DVD of "Patton" and Harris' being appalled at how it looks on a large screen with all the "work" that has been done on it.

He says that the studios are preparing pristine masters but that the folks at the tail end of the process don't really know what they should be doing or how to do it.

It's worth checking out!

The smoke from the fires -- and to answer a question asked of me last evening, the fires seem to be all "around" the Bay area, but are primarily to the north and east -- is still making life here rather difficult, especially in the "respiratory" department.

People are being strongly advised to curtail outside exercise activities and to avoid outside dining until air quality drastically improves.

Aesthetically, everything outside has a golden glow.  One might say, "Oh! How pretty!" until one got a whiff of what is making everything look golden.

I remember the brouhaha I caused about The Searchers transfer, which is one of the most shameful color transfers ever of a classic film, especially one photographed by Winton Hoch.  Everyone came on to those boards and castigated me and said I didn't know what I was talking about, even though not ONE of these people had ever seen the film in a theater.  I said the color on the laserdisc was much closer to the way the film should look, instead of the yellow/green mess that Warners gave us.  Sharp?  Absolutely.  Gorgeously sharp.  Green/yellow skies - sorry, should be BLUE just like they were on the laserdisc.  Mr. Harris finally showed up and said that I knew what I was talking about.  Warners also read the various threads, and someone high up there told Mr. Harris that they hadn't used the studio's IB Tech reference print as a reference - some idiot telecine person had gone his own way and made it look more like one of today's films.  At that point, Mr. Harris said they were going to fix it for the Blu-Ray/HD discs.  Then Ned Price probably realized how annoying that would be to all of us who'd bought the standard DVD and that he'd probably have to replace everyone's discs, and this guy backtracked and said as far as he was concerned the color was correct, even if they hadn't used the reference print and even though this transfer looked nothing like the reference print (the reference print was used to time the laserdisc transfer).  And so everyone who loves The Searchers got a transfer that basically looks nothing like it should.  But because it's SHARP everyone goes ooh and aah - the color doesn't seem to actually matter.  My point is that those same exact people would go ballistic if The Searchers had bee re-mixed into 5.1 and the original mono track hadn't been included, or if it had been transferred in the wrong ratio.  Well, correct color is just as important as the latter two items.

Sad tales fill soaked libraries

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080625/NEWS02/806250374/1001/NLETTER01&source=nletter-news (http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080625/NEWS02/806250374/1001/NLETTER01&source=nletter-news)

How you can help Iowa libraries
Flooded libraries ask that the public not donate books at this time. They do not yet have systems in place to organize them or anywhere to store them. Monetary donations for cleanup and for the purchase of new materials can be sent to:
- Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation, 500 First St. S.E., Cedar Rapids, IA 52401. Mail will be forwarded to the west side branch.
- The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, 30 16th Ave. S.W., Cedar Rapids, IA 52404-5904. Please write "Flood Relief" in the memo line of your check. More information is available at www.ncsml.org.
- Friends of the New Hartford Public Library, P.O. Box 292, New Hartford, IA 50660.

Post by: Cillaliz on June 25, 2008, 10:57:31 AM
I normally wouldn't post a donation site, but they are saying that with all the devastation, the libraries aren't a priority for the funding that's available.  So if anyone feels so inclined as to help out somewhere, this may be a good place to send a monetary donation.

The story really tells it all and has photos

from the story at the link above

Quote
The Cedar Rapids library staffers may not know for some time exactly what is missing and what was checked out; their server was still inside the building early this week. Water rose 5 feet in the building, and most of its 294,000-item collection is feared lost.

Because the city suffered so much - the Cedar River flooding covered more than 400 city blocks and displaced thousands of people and businesses - the library that is usually a center of activity is now at the bottom of the priority list.

"The library is not that important right now, I must admit. The most important thing is to get people into houses and back at their jobs and get the essential services that government provides," said Kay Halloran, Cedar Rapids' mayor.

"As far as I'm concerned, personally, I want to have the water treatment plant back to its normal operation. All the other stuff can wait. They've got people working on whatever can be salvaged from the library, and that takes care of things for now."

The other public library ruined is New Hartford's Elizabeth Rasmussen Martin Memorial Library, a tiny place that reportedly lost 4,600 of its 5,600 books. The library also lost five computers, four of which were new last year.

The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids also sustained significant damage; two more sites at the University of Iowa in Iowa City have unknown but possibly serious damage. Others have minimal water damage.

Hi Cilla.  How is your big case coming along?

It's coming. I have some big deadlines on Monday for jury instructions, evidentiary issues to be decided before trial etc.   The case is really quite fascinating.

I still have tons to do to get ready, but you sort of have to do it in layers - get a feel for what happened and then go back and look at the pieces, look at how the police put them together and see what pieces don't fit with their version, what pieces were ignored that could mean something and how they have twisted things to fit their story.   Then you do the same thing for each eye witness and try to find motive etc.   It's a lot of fun if you're into this sort of thing, which I am and now my assistant is too

One last flood blurb....I don't think people realize how bad it is here. This is another story headline in the DM Register today.
Quote

2,000 C.R. homes could be demolished

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- As many as half of the 4,000 flood-damaged homes in Cedar Rapids may have to be razed.

City Manager Jim Prosser told the City Council on Tuesday that it's possible that 2,000 or more homes may have to be demolished because they would be difficult to rebuild.

Prosser says it a "daunting number."

Prosser says many of the homes are in the 100-year flood plain, generally the hardest hit part of the June 11-13 flooding. Floodwaters flowed well past the 100-year flood plain to properties in the 500-year flood plain and beyond.

Fire Chief Steve Havlik says search and rescue teams visited 4,700 homes in the hours and days after the flooding.

On Monday, the city's assessor's office estimated that 3,894 homes and 818 commercial properties were flooded.

The end-of-FY FLAILEX continues unabated.

I just spent 45 minutes auditing a purchase order that had three change orders appended to it.  The issue:  The Purchase Order is for $XXXXXXXX but the quotes are for less $XXXXXXX.  And someone demands to know, "Why isn't your purchase order correct?"

And I reply: "First of all, sweetie, I don't create Purchase Orders!  I provide a request, including specific amounts of money --- taxable, nontaxable, taxable shipping, nontaxable handling, etc., etc, etc.  I can only rely upon "Others" to correctly decipher, interpret, and calculate amounts of money when they issue Purchase Orders."

"Well, what should the correct total be?"

"Crap!"

So I did an audit...and I found error after error perpetrated by "the professionals"...taxed items being retaxed to the tune of $9.000 over and above what they should be.

I made someone VERY VERY HAPPY, and I still don't get a raise for working well above my job description.

DR George - I can't remember the exact word or the exact placement of said word, but it was something along the line of "special interest", IIRC.

Wednesday morning greetings!  Just as I logged on here we received a flurry of phone calls from my physician.  Seems I was given misinformation last night and took an incorrect dose of one of my medications.  So, the Friday blood test has been moved up to Thursday, which actually is more convenient, but the circumstances are a little unnerving.

I watched "America's Got Talent" last night....and I hope things pick up next week.  There was some good talent in there, but there was far too much crap.  And all those cuts to Jerry Springer for his comments are absolutely ludicrous.

I hated that!  I don't want to watch Jerry's or the audience's reaction to the act...I want to watch the act!!

I printed the article and put it in our staff room.

BK, I appreciate your concern, but I stand by my statement.   Start a discussion on the Forum--you probably won't be ravaged.  :)

It's not a concern, it's factual, and you, as a responsible reviewer, should add a caveat to your review - to stand by it is hard-headed, frankly.  Can I start a discussion on DVD Talk?  I didn't know that was possible.  I cannot start a discussion on the HTF because I am banned from there by the little despot who runs it.   You are blaming the original photography and the printing process of the 60s and that is absolutely incorrect and wrong to do - you, like others, perpetuate stuff you don't really have any expertise on.  I'm not criticizing you for it, but I do have some expertise on matters IB Technicolor, having seen most of these films in their original run or owning IB Tech prints of them.  You cannot in good conscience call this problem what you're calling it - it's a TRANSFER and element problem, not a problem that has anything to do with what this film originally looked like.  I feel passionately about this, and I should think you'd want to at least pass on information in your reviews that has some basis in reality.  Sadly, you're doing what most of these guys do, and it's why there's so much wrongheaded misinformation on the DVD sites.  Sorry if I'm sounding harsh - I don't mean to, but this is an issue I feel strongly about.  It's okay to say what you did about the color - that's not what I'm disputing.  It DOES have a yellow/orange bias, which, as you know since you read it here, is exactly what I said when I wrote about the film over the weekend.  What I'm taking exception to is the fact that you're saying that's the way Technicolor was, as if this yellow/orange bias was a product of IB Technicolor printing in the 1960s.  One look at almost any decent color transfer from that decade (i.e. Gypsy, or Flower Drum Song or Petulia, to name three pretty accurate color transfers from the 60s) and you will find no yellow/orange bias.  So, why would you want to make a generalization like that?  It's baffling.

BK, my "generalization" had nothing to do with FANNY specifically, but with the difference between Technicolor (IB or otherwise) in the 1960s as opposed to its "golden" (no pun intended) age of 20-30 years previously.  For example, I find the reds in FDS completely irreconcilable with the reds of, say, GWTW or Robin Hood or even Thief of Bagdad (in the MGM transfer, LOL).  But if that isn't clear in my review, I should probably change that line.

One and the same department:  as I suspected when I got their shipping confirmations via email and they looked suspiciously familiar, DVDPlanet is indeed the same company as Deep Discount (and Critics' Choice, actually).  My first two DVDPlanet shipments arrived today from the good ol' DD address (and with those same nice boxes, LOL).  That means you can order really cheap (DVDPlanet), pretty cheap (Deep Discount) or not very cheap (Critics' Choice).  Since both DVDPlanet and Deep Discount are still running their 20% off sales, I've done comparison shopping on everything I've ordered--only one thing was cheaper on DD, which really surprised me.

Yes, unless you're interested in an internet connection to do live interaction on the internet to go along with the other features on the Blu-ray. The Magnavox doesn't have an ethernet connection.

If I remember correctly, you don't use the internet connection with your XA2 so I doubt you'd need the connection with the Blu-ray.

I watched another MURDER SHE WROTE episode while I finished eating lunch, and this one I had seen before. It concerned a ballet company doing an infamous ballet that always has brought death to the prima ballerina. Marisa Berensen and Robert Torti were the guest stars along with Adrian Paul. I remembered instantly who the murderer was and the murder weapon, but enjoyed watching it again anyway.

Then I began WALKER TEXAS RANGER. Of course, I NEVER watched the show during its eight year run on network TV. It's pretty much what you would expect from a series starring (and produced) by Chuck Norris about the modern day Texas Rangers. Of course, he kicks ass using karate in every episode though they have tried to soften the character some by having comedy relief occasionally or, in the case of the two part episode I'm watching right now, human interest with Norris' Walker taking in a little eight year old who is living with AIDS.

The child is played by Haley Joel Osment (who acts circles around Norris, but they do make a sweet father/son type duo). MacKenzie Phillips played his drug addicted mother.

The episode prior to that one was one of the more light-hearted episodes starring Terry Kiser (WEEKEND AT BERNIES) in a dual role as a bomber and a small time operator enlisted by the Rangers to pass himself off as the bomber to the bad guys.

With nothing on TV for me tonight, I should be able to finish disc 1 and go through all of disc 2 tonight as well. (That will only leave FIVE more discs to go. Unfortunately, this isn't one of the shows whose seasons get split in half.)

One of my favorites -- D. Paul -- was sent home in Sunday's episode.

The judges keep avoiding eliminating the biggest morale problem on the show -- Tracee ,the queen bitch of wannabe-a-designer-dom.  She has twice pronounced how ashamed she is to be associated with others on the show and yet twice has made extremely tacky design decisions.

I'm flabbergasted at her longevity.  I know the judges have criteria and demoralizing behavior and bad taste are not as egregious, apparently, as other issues like not finishing a room. WADSING WADINGS ADSWING SADWING GINWADS

My DH is always ordering an "extra thick" chocolate milkshake.  They probably roll their eyes and make it the same way every time, but it makes him feel better to order it that way.   ;)

I tried ordering one by saying, "I like my milkshakes the way I like my men..."  So they took it back and watered it down.

That reminds me... someone from the theater where we see the tours called to ask for feedback. I gave feedback. He said they had a lot of complaints about Sweeney Todd in particular. However, the actors were superb in the show, but the staging was stupid.

SF CHRONICLE (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/06/25/BA9611F182.DTL&tsp=1)

Quote
BAD AIR QUALITY IS ABOUT TO GET WORSE AS STATE FIRES KEEP BURNING

Steve Rubenstein, Chronicle Staff Writer
Wednesday, June 25, 2008

(06-25) 17:06 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The smoke is getting smokier in the Bay Area from the hundreds of blazes, big and small, that have swept through dangerously dry Northern and Central California.
The air in parts of the North Bay and East Bay will officially be "unhealthy" and "unhealthy for sensitive groups" on Thursday, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Today, air pollution is only "moderate."

"We've gone up a step," said district spokeswoman Kristine Roselius. "It's terrible. There are just so many fires out there, and the smoke is coming down and impacting the Bay Area."

Seniors and children should stay inside with the windows closed if possible, a tough thing to do on a sunny summer day.

The primary source of the smoke remains the out-of-control Walker Fire in Lake County, which has burned 14,000 acres and is only 5 percent contained. Fire officials expect the amount of blackened acreage to grow substantially as firefighters conduct deliberate burns to curtail the fire's spread.

The movie the Crimson Kimono plot also reminded me of the great French film
Hiroshima Mon Amour directed by Alain Resnais. They were both released in 1959.

Japanese man romancing a white woman, but there was so much more to the story than that.

From Wikapedia

Hiroshima Mon Amour tells the story of a French actress (Emmanuelle Riva) who performs the role of a nurse in a film being shot in post-war Hiroshima. There she meets a Japanese man (Eiji Okada) and they become lovers. Using flashbacks intercut into the present day love story - the couple's meetings in hotel rooms, restaurants, etc. - the woman tells of her experiences during the Second World War in France, where she was involved with a young German soldier during the German occupation, and the consequences when the war came to an end.

Of course.  And the character named Murray went by "Bertha Fenation"!

Actually, I believe in the script, the proper spelling is "Bertha Venation".

If you can believe it -- with this entire County burning away -- various city councils are having meetings this week to determine "whether or not" to allow fireworks to be sold prior to and during the 4th of July.

You could make "county" state.

What I wouldn't give for an authentic Italian pizza and a liter of house red!

-And would you drink the house red out of those wine tumblers or out of more formal glassware?

*There's a great Italian place in Richmond that has a sort of "self-service" wine system.  They keep a small selection of bottles along one wall, and if you'd like a bottle for your table, you just go up to the wall and make your selection.  -And the restaurant uses wine tumblers instead of glasses.

Well... More or less.  I actually am having a good time working with this group, but it really does get a bit "painful" at times when we run the group numbers, and I hear the non-singers trying to sing.  -But at least they're trying.  Alas, when the music supervisor comes in next week, I have a feeling some people's jobs may be in jeopardy and/or we'll have to restructure and re-voice some of the arrangements.  *And it looks like we may be losing one of the men who actually sings tomorrow due to "contractual issues".  :-\

I have heard no reports of DRs dancing the Virginia Reel.

Perhaps DR JoseSPiano can persuade his director to work that choreography into one of the ALW medleys!  :D

Well... There are three shows that this cast is learning.  One is a 70s music revue, then there is "The Music of the Night: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber", and the last is something called "Cirque Asia" - a sort of "Cirque du Soleil spin/rip-off.  In "Cirque Asia" there is one section that sort of resembles a Virginia Reel.  Or at least a Yokohama Reel.  ;)

I was willing to give it a shot with an open mind, which closed abruptly at Joanne and Harry's "fight" scene, which Doyle staged with them on opposite sides of the stage, with them miming the action.  My jaw was literally agape (not in Christian love--little religious humor for those of you so inclined).

Well... That scene actually worked much better in the theatre when you could actually see both of them at once, rather than in isolation.

*And, I've said it before... But I actually liked John Doyle's Sweeney Todd and Company.  Do I want to see all shows resort to "the actors are the orchestra too"?  No.  But the concept really worked for me with these two productions, and I was able to accept the "gimmick" of the actors playing instruments after the first couple of notes were played.  -And I was also able to see when the playing of the instruments was used to heighten the drama in the scene.  I guess having seen and played many productions of both shows, it was truly nice seeing them done in a totally new way.  I also truly appreciated the actors/musicians being able to play their instruments very well and memorizing all that music!  -And Raul Esparza's "Being Alive" - live, in the theatre - was one of the most moving experiences I've had as an audience member.  -It would be a virtual tie with his "Finishing the Hat".

So, DR JoseSPiano, what do the "non-singers" bring to the table?  Can they at least dance well??

Yes, they dance very well.  For some cruise ship shows, they can have non-singers/dancers just mouthing the words while everyone else sings.  And/or the sound guys are instructed not to turn on their mics.  Unfortunately, since the ALW show does not have any "sweetening" in the background tracks, everyone has to sing live.  And on pitch.  And in tune.  Ideally.

I am trying to remain as optimistic as I can, but at the same time I do have to instill a little bit of fear in order to get some of them to step up their game - and voices - a bit.  And even though I know it would be a difficult situation to deal with, I'm hoping that if the worst ends up happening, that the person who cast these people gets in some sort of "trouble".  -Alas, that person is a friend of mine too.  :-\

Every time a friend of mine succeeds, a little piece of me dies (an Amanda Green reference) department:  I was out on my evening constitutional when who should drive by me but Adair (from the Bacharach Revue which BK directed).  Ms. Chappell, through a friend of a friend, has actually become a close personal friend of Burt himself and is now part of his entourage, touring with him worldwide.  She just got back from his Hawaii concert.  Of course, greeted with such momentous news and in the spirit of fellowship that colors all theatrical relationships, I simply responded, "I hate you."   ;D

Whoever asked...was it DR Ron, I found this quote in the NYT

Quote
Aides to both senators say hard feelings between the two camps are dissipating by the week — many people from both sides, in fact, were friends before and remain close — but some habits remain. In the primary, aides to Mrs. Clinton referred to their rival as B.H.O. — initials of Barack Hussein Obama, including his middle name, which has been a politically sensitive issue — while Mr. Obama’s team simply referred to him as B.O. The B.H.O. shorthand is frowned upon inside Mr. Obama’s campaign headquarters, a warning for any Clinton staff members coming aboard.

So I guess they want him to be called B.O.  LOL, whatever.

I have a vivid memory of a commercial -- possibly on radio, but maybe on TV -- for a deodorant.  One of the attention-getters (or "hooks) was a deep-voiced man (voiceover, probably) imitating a foghorn and saying "Beeee-Ohhhhh", and, of course, the brand of  deodorant being advertised would prevent same.

How well I remember, was made to bathe with it regularly!

Lifebuoy

The radio commercial had a foghorn and  “BEEEEEE-OHHHHH” sound effects

The tag line was :

"Your best friend won't tell you."

You can hear the full commercial HERE (http://www.old-time.com/commercials/1940's/Lifebuoy.html) (click on red soap bar in top center)

A two part episode turned back the hands of time to the Old West as Norris played a Texas Ranger trying to clean up a lawless town ruled by a gunslinger with a lightning fast draw. Naturally, after two episodes, it boiled down to that showdown in the street it took two episodes to get to.

One nice thing was Joseph Bottoms (one of my all-time crushes) guest starring in the first of the two parter.

The last episode I watched was sci-fi in nature: a young kid with telekenesis powers has been told his mother (Anne Lockhart) is dead, so he's in a scientific institute where he's being experimented on and where his only friend is a super-computer called "Art."

The kid actor was no Haley Joel Osment, however.

I concluded my evening with Bette Davis and Mary Astor in THE GREAT LIE. This is the first of the films I've watched from the latest Warners/Bette Davis set. They've done a fantastic job cleaning up the film. Sure, there are still a few scratches and film fluctuations, but compared to the ghastly print they used for the laserdisc, this looks almost brand new.

What a pleasure to see it again after quite a few years away from it.

Back from rehearsal.  We did as much as we could - it's difficult because neither of the boys know the material well enough to actually commit to it, and so they're constantly having to look at lyrics and patter.  But, clearly the structure of the show is sound, it's lots of fun, and when they actually get the staging right, it's really fun to watch.  I'll be working with Sean alone on Tuesday, then we work on Friday, then we have three long rehearsals the week after, culminating with a run in front of some friends.

The story of Christy Brown, who was born with cerebral palsy. He learned to paint and write with his only controllable limb - his left foot.

Laura - Not always, but I'm not a vegetable fan.  I do take my fiber supplements regularly, though.

Great - you'll have the most "regular" ankle on the West side.

Not sure if she's a labradoodle or a golden doodle

My money says Jack-A-Poo (Jack Russell/Poodle mix)

Should be a great pet!

bk was grumbling (well, that's no news flash) about the escalating prices at the local bistros. Well, enjoy the cheap food now, while it lasts; between the high cost of fuel, the rising price of grain, and now the crop damage in the midwest, expect restaurant prices to go up about 20-25% within a year. The price of beef and pork may take a temporary dip as farmers slaughter extra livestock because it costs too much to fatten them up, but then the prices will sky-rocket because of shortages. Animal husbandry does not have a "quick reaction" response to supply and demand - no matter the market, farmers can't just have more steers next month.
