Post by: bk on July 21, 2008, 12:19:06 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were traffic-centric, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they are, of course, stuck in traffic.

You see, all the WUSSBURGERS will be arriving late to the Initials Game partay.  But I'm here, and I'll get things rolling with a few of my favorites.  Oh, and I came up with these initials a mere thirty minutes before posting the notes.

Can't stay and chat, we did get the severe storms last night for the second night in a row. Last night the wind was 74 miles per hour and we had torrential rains.  The one very healthy maple tree by my drive way lost a HUGE limb.  There are trees down, wires down and electricity out around town.     Other than the maple tree, so far it looks like I'm OK, I have to go outside and check.

Better run,  I want to get to work early today and it may not be easy to get there

I'm going to allow this one.  Her birth name was Jones, Moreland was her married name, and apparently she used her last names both hyphenated and not.

(And that's scorekeeping, folks!)
Title: Re:TRAFFIC

Larry "Bud" Melman?
This one I'm going to have to disallow.  The actor was Calvert deForest, with Larry "Bud" Melman being a character he played.  Unfortunately, the character was always known as Larry "Bud" Melman, not as Bud Melman, which makes his first initial L, not B.

It'll be worth remembering when the game is LM, however.

Well... Each of their cookies weighs a hefty 6 ounces, so just be sure you don't buy too many or you may end up having to pay excess baggage fees on your flight back.

*And I'd suggest just getting a box of four - one of each flavor.  Or two boxes of four.  ;)

**And, remember, they only take cash.  So, have plenty of cash on you. :P

To reply to S. Woody's question of yesterday:

I have heard of, and have seen, "Dr. Who", in both the 70s (?) BBC incarnation and in the current one.

I had heard of the character "Tintin" but knew nothing about him, per se.

Looking it up, it seems "Tintin" is a made-to-order subject for Mr. Spielberg.  I'm certain he'll have no difficulty finding a suitable writer to replace the defecting one.  The question is, how will "Tintin" translate to/for the 21st Century?

I don't believe one can equate any ratings for a British TV program with ratings for anything in the U.S.   You'd need to know the precise ratio of TVs there being monitored and the proportional equation to population, just was you'd need to know the same for sets in the U.S.  I doubt, seriously, that anyone adequately rates TV programs based on what a representative percentage of any population watches.  I know U.S. ratings are skewed toward a much younger viewing audience -- 17-24, for instance.  Are ratings in the U.K. skewed the same way?

By skewed toward, I mean that this rating group seems to mean much more to the networks than any other age demographic.

That's it, throw it right back at me.

I'm going to defer to our exteemed BK for a ruling on this one.  (Until that ruling, it will be on the list, but let's keep this to a minimum - I'd hate to have to delete lots of posts.)

added thought - there are critics who would argue that Brokeback Mountain is as much a character in the film as any of the humans.

Last night i ended up watching Andew Lloyd Webber on HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA. So i must watch last night's BIG BROTHER today.

Tonight on tv for me:

THE MOLE

CANADIAN IDOL

HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA results show.

I thought ALW was funny. Interestingly he would not say his favorite out loud. Although the other judges really praised 3 out of the 4. Yet declared 2 of them their favorites. My favorite is the 3rd, jayme.  The weird this is when i tried to vote her line was busy for 90 minutes. What the heck??? How can they seem who got the most calls if one cannot even get thru!

I found out PROJECT RUNWAY season 5 will start here on sept 1st (i guess that is like 6 weeks after the US). Not sure why they do this every season.  Oh well. I guess i'll just have to block out the eliminated contestants!

Could be, but he's the rock singer that has that reality show "Rock of Love" -- I haven't seen it but he was on a talk show and brought a clip -- looks like a variation on the dating reality shows like "The Bachelor," etc. I'll have to look up what band he was with, but it's like the rock star and the babes -- a bunch of girls sign on and he picks one at the end. Sounds like it's been on several seasons -- and no real love match yet...

Doesn't mention the WWF on the rock singer Bret Michael's Wikipedia page -- and when I goggled Bret Michaels WWF, the Bret Michaels fight came up (Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels) but so far nothing on an individual WWFer named Bret Michaels, but that could only mean I'm not looking in the right place...

So, I spent most of the afternoon with SHINE A LIGHT, Martin Scorsese's film of the Rolling Stone's concert at the Beacon Theater in NYC. If you're a Stones fan, you'll be in heaven with the camerawork allowing you to get up close and personal. The 5.1 sound rocks the house.

Not as trenchant a docu-concert as Scorsese's THE LAST WALTZ, but still good for a single look. There are a few bonus features I'll get to this evening.

No time to catch up. I have had my last pretrial conference, gone home and cut the downed limb into pieces I hope they will pick up with the trash.  (That was a lot of sawing)   Recovered from getting overheated  cutting the tree limb and am not back at work.

And here it is folks:

Government inspectors have found the same salmonella strain responsible for a nationwide food-poisoning outbreak in a Mexican-grown jalapeno in a Texas plant, prompting a new warning for consumers to avoid eating fresh jalapenos.

The Food and Drug Administration called Monday's announcement a "very important break in the case."

But it doesn't mean Mexican jalapenos are the culprit _ the pepper may not have been contaminated on the farm. And while tomatoes currently are safe to eat, health officials also said the finding doesn't exonerate tomatoes that were sold earlier in the spring and summer.

These idiots just can't admit they were completely wrong about the tomatoes - they had ZERO evidence and just guessed, thereby causing the tomato growers millions of dollars.  These creeps need to apologize and admit their error.  They at least now seem to have some proof of the jalapeno thing, or so they say.

The Barra McNeils (http://www.barramacneils.com/)!  They recorded a version of Auld Lang Syne that is purported to be the original melody, not the Guy Lombardo version.  It's a beautiful version.  My sister's boyfriend recorded their Christmas concert on PBS and that song was in it.

Cilla, I am sorry to read about the storm, but grateful it wasn't worse.

Still, it has been years and years since I have seen a newspaper that quotes a citizen, and then lists his actual street address.  Incredible!

DR JMK - The only cookie with nuts at Levain is their Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookie.  Otherwise, you may also choose either a Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip one, an Oatmeal Raisin one, of a Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip one. -It's always best to start off with the "sampler pack" and proceed from there.  ;)
Holy you-know-what!  I think I'll need an extra seat on the plan coming back!

A friend of ours is picking us up at 8:30 p.m. even though we don't leave till midnight.  She has to work tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. so dropping us off early is the least we could do for her since she is so kind as to take us in the first place!

4 mores hours till we take off.  Just waiting for some last minute things to come out of the dryer and then almost packed.  Sis ran to store to grab a few last minute things.  Boarding passes in purse and almost rarin' to go!   :D

Julie, hopefully you saw my earlier post--I do indeed want the chocolate chip walnut, and that's all I want.  Several dozen should suffice.  ;)

Yeah, good luck with that!  I'll tell you what, you pay for the shipping and I'll have them sent to you!  ;)  I've been told one cookie is 6 oz.  so you'll be lucky if you get a half dozen! *lol*

Oh, I found out that because my temp agency pulled me from that job that it is considered a suspension and that I will have to fill out paperwork and fight to get my unemployment reinstated.  I'll worry about that when I get home.  Just what I needed, huh?

"Bud" Millman, the late comic character from late night TV. (David Letterman?)
I'm taking this off the list, for reasons given way earlier (specifically, it was Larry "Bud" Mellman, who was a character played by an actor, and the character was always referred to as Larry "Bud" Mellman).

I can help you with that when you're ready, having been on "the other side" of that many times (i.e., I was the one attempting to deny unemployment benefits on behalf of the temp service).

Actually, Levain does ship their cookies - just go to their website - levainbakery.com.

Hmm... A half dozen of those cookies will run $22.50 - they raised their prices a couple months ago to $3.75 per cookie.  I guess we'll find out just how much DR JulieC40 likes DR JMK.  ;)

In an article by Jeffrey Steingarten (part of last week's list), originally published in Vogue magazine in June of 2000 and reprinted in It Must've Been Something I Ate,

Quote
The FDA has told me that, if mandatory pasteurization [of the raw milk used for making cheese] would save just one life a year, the agency would have no choice but to require it.  The FDA says it has no authority to balance the risk from eating a certain food against the benefit or pleasure we might derive from it.  (This is what the agency does on a daily basis when considering drugs and medicines and their side effects.)

(Pages 110 - 111 in the book.)

In other words, they're doing their job.

I don't think it's likely for them to make an apology for trying to save people's lives.

Meanwhile, der Brucer is jumping for joy because I won't be force-feeding him jalapenos for a little while.  Wuss.

Dakota Celt are you just not reading the NOTES?  And are you not reading the posts - just about every name you've mentioned has been listed - and the big list appears several times on this board.

Probably not since she just returned from the difficult funeral, and DBF is visiting.

I must admit to skimming the posts today.  I hadn't planned to stop by today but Keith saw something interesting running around outside.

Oooh, oooh, oooh!!!

It's the jalapenos from Mexico and Texas that are the problem!

If I get any jalapenos at tomorrow's Farmer's Market, they'll be safe because they're local!

(On the other hand, Delaware jalapenos sounds like an oxymoron.)

We were early to Keith's eye doctor appointment today (the doctor is very impressed with results of the surgery) and decided to take a drive up into the hills and look at houses.

We saw four stags walking around and one person trying to chase them off of his property.

Sherlock enjoyed seeing the stags as much as we did.

See page 1.  The character and the historical personage count as the same.  (Otherwise, we'd have to include a listing for each and every appearance of Masterson in a film or television show... or dime novel, for that matter.)

I can help you with that when you're ready, having been on "the other side" of that many times (i.e., I was the one attempting to deny unemployment benefits on behalf of the temp service).

I would REALLY appreciate it.  I'll let you know when I get home what happens with it.  Hopefullly, it won't be too much of an issue.  I will be without unemployment benefits however until it's settled and maybe get "back pay."

Just a note of congratulations to all.  With all my early postings, I'd pretty much shot my load.  As the actual inventor of this game, I was concerned that my intense participation would leave very little left for everyone else.  I'm very glad that it has not been the case....

From George:
"You might want to space them out a bit...throughout the day.

Give the rest of us a chance, at least."

My weird lifestyle just doesn't lend itself to linger on the website throughout the day. That's one of the reasons I had Bruce do my posting for me in the past. So I must load up when I can.  Anyway, you've all seemed to do well even with my loading up.

Well, I'm signing off.  Our friend will be here in a half hour to pick us up to go to the airport.  I don't know if I'll get a chance to get on the internet while I'm there but if not, I'm sure you will all be hearing about this on Monday.  Getting home late on Sunday night.  Everyone have a great week!  :)

I am very excited and happy for Frank and extremely disappointed that I will be out of the country for the duration of the run of the show... I would like to support him however so if any of our NY area DRs (or any of our DRs who will be in the NY area during this time ) would care to go to one of the performances I will be happy to pay for the tickets!

I finished the bonus features on the SHINE A LIGHT DVD. There were four songs cut from the final picture, but my favorite bonus was a 15 minute behind-the-scenes compilation with the Stones rehearsing or just sitting on stage riffing on their guitars without amplification or a screaming crowd. It's the best music on the disc - so pure and hypnotic.

Quote from: macchus on Today at 03:16:25pm:

Next, I opened WILL & GRACE - Season 7 and watched the first 3 episodes. This was the season where Grace left Leo when she found he had cheated on her so the first two episodes involved her in the failed reconciliation and then grieving process. She drove me CRAZY, and I was especially disgusted with Will for letting down his boy friend Vince who wanted Will to meet his boss just because Will had to answer his cell phone every single time needy Grace called during the dinner.

I remember now why many of the episodes during seasons seven and eight were so unbearable; Grace is the most selfish person on earth and Will lets her take total advantage of him.

Nice "Closer," very romantic in its quirky way, which was a nice change. What a great show.

Yay! Thanks for tuning in!

BTW, although household ratings used to be measured just by Nielsen families, now you can help improve the ratings of any show you like with your Tivo or other recorder. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but I guess the providers keep track of who records what, so whenever anyone records THE CLOSER, it helps our ratings. So even if you don't watch it, but record and erase it the next day, it still helps.

So support your favorite shows!

I watched the BONES rerun, and it was another heavily-plotted Gormogon episode. These episodes really creep me out, and this was the worst yet. It also ended with a seat-jumping moment which really made me lose it. And I saw the ORIGINAL broadcast!

Back from seeing Wall-E, which was very inventive and fun.  For the last few weeks, I sure could have used an All-Access Hover Chair!

My DH wanted to go to a store called FYE tonight. I was ready to leave after about 15 minutes, so I whiled away the 2 hours I had to spend there by watching different films that were running, including SHORT CIRCUIT. When my DH finally showed up, I pointed out how much the robot in the movie resembled pictures I'd seen of WALL-E.

As we got in line, I heard a little kid calling out to his Dad, after seeing the same movie: "It's Wall-e!"

Here's the SHORT CIRCUIT ROBOT:

Present-day New York, "Galatea" weaves together a retired fireman and his wife, with a neurotic, obsessive sculptress. First impressions can be misleading. ?Galatea? is an insightful examination of relationships and commitment, with unexpected, postmodern twists on conventional wisdom.

The Oscar song is sort of pointless and giving the "Another suitcase" song to Madonna I guess was only so she could sing something else!

IMHO quite a mess of a movie yet some of the cinematography was good.

I was not really sure the film truly had a "focus".  I've not watched it since its release at the cinema though

Yet "Che" is listed in the credits.

It was understandable in the stage production (and more so in the concept album recording) that Che was the "moral" conscience of the movie and the chief critic of the "Climb" of Eva Peron.

Agree that the Oscar song was pointless, moving another Suitcase was just dumb, and, yes, the cinematography was quite good (and if you close your eyes, the movie doesn't sound all that bad). A great "movie moment" truely lost. Sad!

der Brucer

I'm hoping for a good cinema treatment of Les Miz (Because it is based on a novel, the screenwriters don't have to stretch to give the plot some more definition, if desired.)

Imagine the great visuals that could be created to accompany Eponine's trip from the house to the barricades while singing On My Own!

From memory there is no indication in the Evita movie as to who the Che character is!

On the original white album studio recording, you never get the impression that he's supposed to be Che Guevara.  It seemed that he was just the narrator who happened to be named Che.

One day I'll have the courage to look at "PotO"

Unfortunately, what were dramatic techo-moments on stage are ho-hum when done on film and the score is still the same "one-trick-pony".

Right - it was left to the knowledgeable listener to wonder "might he be?"

I wonder if anyone has considered "Starlight Express" as an animated movie.

Guilty pleasure - I really quite enjoy the score but the original production in London was a total yawn fest!

I don't think one needs to be a Comcast subscriber (I logged out and it worked), but I'm currently...and legitimately...watching next week's as-yet-not-broadcast-on-TV second season premiere episode of "Mad Men," called "Those Who Think Young."  Click HERE (http://www.comcast.net/data/fan/html/popup.html?v=796472025) to see it (and to see if it works)!
