Calamity Jane

Favorite westerns?

There are so many.  The western and gangster films and musicals are my favorite movie genres.

Interesting mix, huh.

Okay, here goes (in no particular order):

All of the James Stewart/Anthony Mann westerns
All of the Randolph Scott/Budd Boetticher westerns
UNFORGIVEN (Eastwood)
HIGH NOON
THE SEARCHERS
SHANE
THE UNFORGIVEN (w/Burt Lancaster & Audrey Hepburn)
THE BIG COUNTRY
RED RIVER
APACHE
THE SHOOTIST
THE COWBOYS
3:10 TO YUMA (the original)
THE GUNFIGHTER

Maybe more later.

Regarding last night's staged reading:

Considering the fact that we were under rehearsed and that we had to substitute a key cast member at the last minute, I was quite pleased.

One thing that I was very happy about is that, with intermission, the show came in UNDER 2 hours.

It's very difficult to judge what works and what doesn't work in a performance like this, since the actors are reading their roles, are not always sure what they should be doing, and there is no time to work on nuances.

Certainly many changes will be made, but I'm not sure if any MAJOR surgery should be undertaken (e.g. cutting this song or that) until we get into rehearsal for a regular production...even if it's an Equity Waiver production.

On the other hand, perhaps I'll feel differently after tonight's performance.

Good morning, all! I commented on George Furth's death yesterday afternoon, but I misspelled his last name.

I'm not sure what's on today's agenda; NYPL at Lincoln Center, for sure, as well as some Lady of the Slipper work.

DR Jose, how long is the Bolt Bus ride from NYC to DC and where does it stop in DC? I assume it leaves from Port Authority?

I'm still wondering what the hell is going on with the check from the July 19 concert, especially since the work was finished on June 17! I'm starting to get really really pissed over this jerk's delays. I thought I might go down to DC this week, but I thought I'd have the cash to do it by the end of last week.

TOD:

TOD:

I used to not care much about westerns and had only a bare handful that I could even tolerate. In the last ten years, it's probably the genre I've grown to love the most. My favorites:

THE OX-BOW INCIDENT

HOW THE WEST WAS WON

MY DARLING CLEMENTINE

THE GUNFIGHTER

STAGECOACH

HIGH NOON

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

THE SEARCHERS

THE BIG COUNTRY

JOHNNY GUITAR

And if they count: CALAMITY JANE and ANNIE GET YOUR GUN

My favorite orchestral score of all time (any genre) is HOW THE WEST WAS WON.

Hmmm... from the sound of my wording above, it seems that I'm saying I like westerns better than any other kind of film. That's not what I meant. Of the genres I didn't care for (western, war, horror), westerns are now among genres I really enjoy. Nothing will ever supersede musicals and mysteries as my two favorite genres.

Today I'll be slaving away on the Blu-ray of NIXON: The Election Year Edition. Just like this election year we're experiencing which seems to have lasted about three years, NIXON has had footage put back into the theatrical cut so that it's now 210 minutes long. I doubt I'll even be able to watch the entire feature this afternoon unless I extend my usual viewing time.

Since macchus made his intentions clear about the playing of the Initials Game and his at-its-roots rivalry with bk over the most names posted, let me aid their competitive fever by forever removing myself from all future competitions. Good morning everyone!

We really enjoyed [title of show] last night.  They had a pretty good crowd, who also enjoyed - but none of the frantic fan adulation, which was nice.

After the show, we walked about and had dessert at Carnegie Deli.

This morning, a lovely outdoor rooftop breakfast atop the Yale Club, next to Grand Central, and then off to the Observation Deck of the Empire State building.

Now we're back in our room relaxing for a little bit before heading out to tour The Waterfalls by water.

I'm lagging hopelessly behind on the posts...  :(

My favorite western score is from a virtually forgotten Samuel Fuller film, RUN OF THE ARROW, which starred Rod Steiger.

I wish somebody would put this one out on DVD.

The score was by Victor Young.  I believe it was his last.

While those may be macchus's intentions they are not mine and I encourage all to continue to play the game and have fun.  I'll be discussing this with him privately, and we will be limiting ourselves to fifteen each (I PROMISE to be strict about this myself) until morning.  While I definitely have a competetive edge while playing the game privately, on the site it's not about winning and losing, it's about fun, so that's what it will be and should be.  I haz spoken.

I appreciate DR macchus' comments last night about "the game" and its intent.  Yes, it does get a lot of participation because we all enjoy fun.

I would like to point out that few of the names he and BK post in the initial flurry are names we would not know.  In fact, they are often the names that spring to mind most readily.

We are a very erudite group of people -- and to suggest that movie composer names and sports names would be somehow beyond us seems a bit shortsighted.  "We", as a group, know quite a bit about many things, sports and movie scores included.

We do not, however, get a head start by knowing initials in advance so we aren't able to post them so rapidly from a pre-prepared list.

I wonder....do the HHW forum members' names fall into BK's column?  If so, I don't think there could much of a contest!   :D

DR elmore - The Bolt Bus takes about 4 hours each way.  It's all dependent on traffic.  They have two pick-up spots here in NYC - near Penn Station, and one downtown in Chinatown (I think).  Their drop-off/pick-up point in DC is in Chinatown - with easy access to either MetroCenter or Gallery Place Metro stations.

Los Angeles lawmakers are hoping they can legislate away the eating habits of Ms. Jackson and thousands of her neighbors. In July the City Council passed a one-year moratorium, now signed into law and effective as of last week, on any new fast-food restaurants in a 32-square-mile area south of Interstate 10, and the city is offering prospective owners of new grocery stores and non-fast-food restaurants large financial incentives to set up shop in the area.

Again, I want to be very clear, even though I thought I had been:  No one, NO ONE but ME knows the initials in advance, and I only know them a teeny bit in advance.  macchus does not know them in advance.  I said before I normally think of them a couple of hours before posting the Sunday notes.  And I think you all know that I've been way too busy to worry about names in a game.  The longer you play the easier it is to come up with a flurry of names.  I have a particularly agile mind when it comes to this game, and I also have a patented way of coming up with names quickly that never fails - something I figured out early when macchus and I were playing this in the car.   No prepared lists or anything of the kind - if I think of things while I'm out jogging or doing errands, I jot them down so I don't forget them.  And macchus can't do anything in advance - he doesn't have the initals until he logs onto this site at midnight.

And I agree and have said so repeatedly how many great choices come up here every Monday, things I could kick myself for not thinking of.  But, I also know that I do like to post some of my obscure things that I really don't think people would get - like Adrian Marcato from Rosemary's Baby, or characters from my books or films.

Can we try not to post the winners names of shows like NEXT FOOD NETWORK STAR, TOP CHEF, PROJECT RUNWAY that are delayed by 6 weeks in canada.

:(

Aaron McCargo, Jr's, name was posted as part of the Name Game and required an explanation of who he is, since there are more people here who weren't waching Next Food Network Star than there are Canadians who post here.  The needs of the many outweighed the need of the one.

Besides, his prize for winning the contest, his own new show, has already started airing here in the US.  If I had posted instead that he is the host of Big Daddy's House, it would have been as much a giveaway as what was posted.  And since his show is only slated for a six-episode run, by the time NFNS airs in Canada he will already have become old news here in the States - deferring to Canada in this case is absurd.

My favorite orchestral score of all time (any genre) is HOW THE WEST WAS WON.
I agree with it being a great score, and my all-time favorite vocal score.  I wore out the LP when I was a spring of a twig of a lad.

But I'm not a big Westerns fan.  In fact, I'm not a fan of any genre the encourages resolving conflicts with guns.

So, I guess my favorite Western would have to be The Unsinkable Molly Brown.  Everyone behaves quite nicely in that movie.  Well, pretty much.

DR Jennifer - Again... Have you thought of moving to the States?  ;)

On the other hand... You've also been providing some play-by-play for some of the Canada-only reality shows - "Canadian Idol" and "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?"... And who's to say that those shows may not get broadcast in the US at some point down the line?

We can all try to be "careful", but you also have to know that "slips" may happen from time to time.  But you also must know that by having all of us post spoiler warnings for any possible spoiler, well...  :-\  -Yes, it may take a few extra seconds, but part of the fun of posting is posting "on the spot" - not via tape delay, or broadcast delay.  And has been stated in the past, HHW is not the only source of spoilers.  (*I've been reading Seth Rudetsky's play-by-play on the Maria show - well, at least the one in London - I think...)

Does knowing the winner in advance really take away all the enjoyment of watching the competition for you?  Surely, it's not that disheartening.

And, again, it's just TV.

Since macchus made his intentions clear about the playing of the Initials Game and his at-its-roots rivalry with bk over the most names posted, let me aid their competitive fever by forever removing myself from all future competitions. I only post a few each week anyway so my contributions won't be missed, but knowing what's actually going on does not make it a fun experience for me any longer.
No, Matt, please continue to post your entries.  The competition between BK and macchus is just that, a competition between them.  It is not the entire game, nor the point of the game.  As I see it, the point of the game is information sharing - a way of getting each other to think, both of names to add to the list and a contemplation of the names that are already there.  Your contributions help make me think.

OY!

Did this really all have to come up again?!?!?!?

So... Maybe the whole solution to the whole SPOILER ALERT situation is to just not discuss those shows, programs, movies, etc., on this site.  Just take those discussions to sites exclusively devoted to talking about those shows.

Would that work for everybody?

*And, yes, I find this whole discussion stupid and frustrating.  We all know that we live in different time zones and different countries.  Just deal with it.  Reading and posting on this forum should be fun.  Not work.

And as for the Initials "Game", well.. since that has now seemed to rub some people the wrong way...

Maybe BK could just set that up as a separate "Daily Discussion" - like  "Juliana's Journal" was.  So, if you want to play, you can just click over there and play.  Then come back here and post about what true Topic of the Day there is.

You could have just said he was a contestant on the show.

I've mentioned more than once that the show was not finished airing in canada (since we only get Food canada not the US food network).

So i found it very inconsiderate, as i find this reply. Other readers who commented on the winner last week left spoiler space.

It's just about being considerate. Why would you want to just blurt out someone's name when you know that it will spoil it for someone else? It's beyond me i guess.

I will post what I want, and Devil Take the Hindmost.

I don't care if I spoil a TV show competition.  I have never posted a winner or result, but as my Birthday Twin wrote:  It is only TV.

Sometimes when results are known, I look on the net so that I know the winner's name, and I enjoy the show just as much watching it play out.  They are television shows, not REAL competitions, and if anyone thinks the results are not manipulated by the producers in some way....well I have a bridge to sell you.

I never said who won MARIA or Canadian idol. And i always left space or tried to. And if i knew anybody else would watch either of these i would definitely leave space for any show i talk about.

Yes, actually I was upset yesterday. I go to great lengths to avoid reading about these shows. And i am very careful when reading this board on the days these shows air for you.

Do i wish Project runway, top chef ...  aired at the same time here. Yes. But i can't help him if the networks they are on (slice and food network) decide to run then 6 weeks behind.

I understand if someone makes an honest mistake, or even feels sorry.  But at least make an effort if you know it will upset someone else. I would make the effort for anyone here.

I agree with this.  This game is NOT a competition -when I play one on one with Rothman, THAT'S a competition.  If he perceives it's a competition when we do it here, that's his perception - it isn't for me - I just have fun thinking of names and having them come to me, and seeing what others are posting.  I hate when these fun things turn acrimonious for no reason, so let's keep it going and have it be what it was when I first brought the game to the site - a pleasant Monday topic and diversion.  As I've said repeatedly, from the first time we played it, I have been amazed at some of the great stuff we've come up with.

I just came back from lunch and the money that I didn't spend on food I spent on CDs, and more! A new place opened on 14th St. and 5th Avenue called Pita Joe. It's the first day of business and employees are standing on the corner handing out promotional cards. According to the card you get a free lemonade with your lunch. It's a new place so I thought I would try it out. I had the basic falafel (Joe in a Pocket) with hummus and tahini and I got a Raspberry Lemonade (isn't that an oxymoron) I got to the counter and not only was the RL free, the sandwich was also. It was quite tasty and I'm not saying that because it was free. I then went home, listened to the message on the answering machine and found out that Summer Stock will be playing at Chelsea Classics on Thursday evening! Even though it will be a DVD I will hie myself over there. I've never seen SS on the big screen (we've watched it on the telly) and since Anthony is out of town I feel I must make the pilgramage in his honor (Anthony is a JG fan btw). Then I went to Academy. That was my mistake. In the window they had the box set of The Complete Flanders and Swann! For $29! 3 CDs, At the Drop of a Hat, At the Drop of Another Hat and The Bestiary of Flanders and Swann. So, as I said, the money I saved on lunch was more than used at Academy. Now I won't have to transfer our F&S records. Damn You Academy  ;D

DR Ginny - When are you in NYC again? 'Cause I think I've come up with a plan for my birthday...

I think I'm just going to another sort of Walking and Eating Tour.  I basically did it last year on my birthday by myself - which is what I wanted to do anyway.

I had toyed with having some sort of party on the weekend before and/or after my birthday, but I've never been fond of celebrating birthdays on a non-birthday day, so...

What I'm pretty sure I'm going to do is to plan some sort of itinerary for the day.  I'll send it out to my friends, post it on Facebook, etc.  Then throughout the day, my friends can join me as their schedule and location permits.  -I've never been one for big parties, and this will be a nice way to make sure any of my friends who may be in rehearsals, shows, work, etc., can have an opportunity to meet up with me during the course of the day.  -And it will make it much easier to make sure I get some actual one-on-one time with everyone.  So.. Stay tuned.

When the Sun in confident Leo opposes spiritual Neptune on August 15, it's important to balance your own needs with others. The August 16 lunar eclipse in group-minded Aquarius underscores this theme! Keep you eyes and ears open toward the end of the week as warrior Mars squares intense Pluto. And as for Initials...

I hereby volunteer to post the next set of initials at Midnight (EST) this coming Sunday night/Monday morning.  And then I shall refrain from posting any names until later in the day.  -And I will just look at a book, a record, a DVD case, pick a name and use those initials.  And I will "pick" those initials right before posting.  No pre-thought or prep involved.

Sound fair?

Thanks. And I guess I could extend my celebration for you and Richard.  ;)

Der Brucer and I could pick out the initials.  Since we're the ones doing the scorekeeping, we could pick initials like QZ, and make the work easy for ourselves!

 ;D

More seriously, the current system, from our standpoint, works fine.  Since der B is up way into the vampire hours, he can compile the list and have it up by the time everyone else awakens, so they don't constantly have to plow through the posts to avoid repetitions.

And keep in mind, everyone:  There are some names, with every set of initials, which are obvious.  These are going to be the first names that come up, and probably would come up no matter who made the first dozen posts.  I suppose those first posters could refrain from posting the obvious names, saving them for later contributors, but then someone making the next dozen posts would pick them, or the dozen after that.  Those names are going to get posted at some point.

The trick is to come up with names that no one else has thought of.  That's the game.  And, who knows?  Maybe you'll come up with a name that no one else knows, but in also telling what that person does, or has done, you'll help someone discover things they never knew before!  That's what I call fun!

No!  And I'm OUTRAGED that you'd even suggest it.

Here's a thought:  Let's not discuss anything until it is aired on TV or is released on DVD or CD and a copy has been mailed to every Hainsie/Kimlet.

That way, we can all catch up and post about the same thing.

If I have to leave spoiler space on every single post I make, then I'm leaving.

And I am not leaving.

Every post you make ISN'T about a TV show plot or reality show winner.  Therefore, posting "SPOILER" isn't an issue.

But if you did...or more to the point...if you were watching such a show but for some reason had to record it for later viewing...you'd probably be very happy that MOST of us who post about these things do so with a spoiler warning because there are people here who don't get to watch the shows as they air.

That said, I know DR Jennifer was disappointed to learn the winner of that cooking show but the truth is, the game wasn't about that show -- it was about a name that fit the initials.

Sometimes shit happens.  It's not intentional.  It just is.

The point, I think, is to not make a huge deal of it when it happens and it's quite obvious it was an inadvertent revelation.

Let's retain the status quo of being careful discussing a recent episode of some show by posting SPOILER so that those who cannot catch up until the weekend (or, in the case of one DR, until the season is on DVD) won't have their pleasure spoiled.

But also maintain an objectivity that sometimes things get revealed without the writer meaning to spoil anything.

No, it won't work. When will it end? From taped reality shows to live reality shows to prime time TV and daytime soap operas. There will ALWAYS be the potential for something to be spoiled. I think everyone here has on good faith gone out of his way not to ruin anyone's fun, BUT PEOPLE ARE HUMAN AND MISTAKES ARE MADE. (I've made plenty of them but never purposely to ruin someone else's good time.)

I think this is one of the few sites where everyone does try to be respectful of everyone and I think we can assume that no one here does anything to purposely annoy anyone (well, maybe I do - hardy har har har), so let's all calm down and I want everyone to post exactly as they do.  I have never had anything spoiled for me, and as MattH says everyone really tries their best.  If someone inadvertently says something that's a spoiler, then, oh, well - worse things happen (some day I'll tell you all about the mine fields - THOSE are BAD).  No one's getting banned from this site (I've really only banned one person in all of the years we've been up, and that was someone who came here from another site to deliberately cause trouble).

Like life, the site occasionally goes through little differences of opinion, and that's fine - just let's keep it calm and fun and deal with it in a nice way.  That's my two centimes on the matter.

Really - is Pluto in Jupiter or something?  Is Mars making rings around Saturn?  Is Uranus being difficult?

My friend Margo, who I picked up from the airport last night, was visiting her sister in Minneapolis.  This weekend, they went to see the new Little House on the Prairie (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/119925.html) musical with Melissa Gilbert (TV's very own Laura Ingalls Wilder) playing Ma.  Margo said that the show was very good. :D

How cute.  Can Melissa Gilbert sing?

Hello, y'all!

Just checking in briefly.  This afternoon was South Street Seaport, a Circle Line tour of the waterfalls, Eldridge Street synagogue and Guss's Pickles.

Tonight - who knows?  Perhaps just relaxing in the room.   :)

Both of you get your buttcheeks out there and walk Times Square!!!

I'm certain now that it's not allergies.

Sigh.

Bummer! While hiking Sherlock today, which I won't do tomorrow, I thought about the advantages of a summer cold over a winter one.  In the summer the air is warm & moist which is good for a cough, plus you can always get watermelon.

On the way home today we stopped for more watermelon & soup.

Listening to Randy Newman's new album - best he's done since Good Ol' Boys, and much more akin to his early stuff like Sail Away.  I'd read a couple of reviews on amazon and the way these people made it sound didn't make me want to get it - it sounded like it was more like his last album, just a small group of musicians.  It's not that at all - full orchestra on certain tracks.  Some great new songs, one of which Mr. Haines will be recording whenever we get around to doing his new album.

Very well said.

Here's a description of Newman's album from amazon:

Randy Newman's first studio album of all new material in nearly a decade is, by turns, hilarious, poignant and scathingly satirical. Harps and Angels often has an easy going Crescent City feel, with Newman on piano fronting a small combo and revealing, as Rolling Stone put it after the Carnegie Hall show, his serious love and study of the New Orleans piano tradition.

Fronting a small combo???  I wonder what album THEY listened to because it certainly wasn't this one.

Sherlock was very sad when I left him this morning to go to the Growers Market.  I knew I couldn’t control him and carry boxes of blueberries as my arms & body are very sore today.  He looked very unhappy as I slipped out the door.  Keith found him curled up at the door looking very sad.  When I returned I had to take him hiking.  On the way home I waited in the car while Keith did grocery shopping, and then I went into the drug store.  Amazing how exhausted I was after my big outing.

I just remembered a fun thing that happened on the hiking trail.  For safety reasons I usually keep Sherlock on leash until we get up the narrow trail leading in.  He was ahead of me doing his normal pull Mommy up the trail (today having help up the hill was appreciated) when suddenly he stopped.  Crossing the narrow trail were several deer who gave us a quick check before trotting down the embankment.  In all my years hiking there I have never seen deer on this part of the trail.  Even more surprising was that Sherlock didn’t attempt to go after them, still I was glad he was on the leash.  I wasn’t concerned about him running after the deer, just running down the steep embankment & injuring his elbows.

The size 4 font size was not mean to hurt anyone. I almost always put the key words in size 4 font in every single one of my posts.  But i do get why some people could have thought i was yelling.  But it was not my intent.

It's so odd how things can be mis-interpreted. Because i did not even mention your name in the post. I was not trying to be mean or rude. Just to give a reminder for the future.

And while i do not think it was intentional (my original post never said anything about that at all), we did have a discussion about this particular show just a few weeks ago (when you were commenting that we did not watch any of the same shows and i said i love this particular show but could not comment on it here because it is on delay in canada).

Not work.

And might I add, if you don't want to know something stop reading when you get any hint that it's about that subject.  That's really the easiest solution.

Jennifer, I'm sorry but it's not being considerate to ask an entire board of people to not discuss something because you haven't seen it and you don't know the answer.

And I say post away.  If I get here for the first time on page 15, I'll just skip all of them anyway  ;D

OH!

So.. Stay tuned.

When is your birthday, Jose?

But you're missing the point. I don't care if you discuss it. I never said anything of the sort.

But i am saying now there are 3 shows here that air later in canada (top chef, project runway and next food network star). Just don't announce the winners name as the first line in the post.

DR Cilla, if we didn't have company arriving Saturday, we could have seen you in Chicago.

My heart will be in North Chicago on Friday when during Bryan's white coat ceremony.  I hear it is beautiful & moving.

I just hope I'm here and not in L.A.  Each day continues to bring some improvement with my DMIL.  She is very unhappy right now.

That would have been fun. I'll be busy most of the time I'm there. It's just from Tomorrow around noon until Friday around noon. Just a quick trip with a bunch of judges

Good Evening!

It was indeed another day of ever-changing weather here in NYC. Sunny. Cloudy. Sunny again. Very cloudy and gray. Rainy. Drizzling. Downpour. Then sunny again. Thankfully, I had my umbrella with me, however, when it was drizzling lightly, it was quite refreshing.

No.  The guests made their plans a year ago & we couldn't ask them to make a change.  It is very disappointing not to be there with Bryan.  Nothing happened here for two months, then everything is at the same time-darn.

Well, I'm leaving work.  This morning, I was told by the computer services supervisor that maybe today I would get a computer with Microsoft Vista on it to test, but I didn't.  I know that they're very busy, trying to get certain departments up and actually running on Vista and I'll just be testing it for the technical services side.  Hopefully, I will get it tomorrow so that I can begin experimenting and let them know of any problems that I encounter...hopefully, it'll be tomorrow.  It doesn't really matter at all to me if I don't get it, but I'm kind of excited to be able to test it.  I've never worked on Vista and the only time that I've seen it, is at Costco.

I could not get over how lame the audio commentaries were for NIXON! Stone has done two of them but there are long, long gaps between his talking. Why on earth didn't they simply edit the two tracks into one since it's Stone on both. Really ridiculous and frustrating.

I watched all of the bonus features on the second disc in the set. There's a new documentary on Nixon's presidency and legacy. Then there are the older bonuses from the last DVD edition of NIXON: deleted scenes (many of which are now back in the director's cut so they're deleted no more), his hour long appearance on THE CHARLIE ROSE SHOW (always interesting), and the trailer.

I remember my boss turning down my request to upgrade my computer from a 20Meg to a 40 Meg with the comment that never in the whole wide world would I ever need more than 20 Meg. Before I left the job I was regularly working with DataBase files in excess of 10 Megs each.
