Title: THE PLANETS
Post by: bk on September 03, 2008, 12:20:35 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in Pluto, which was in Uranus, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently wondering why Mars is in Uranus when clearly Pluto wants to be in Uranus.

Good morning, all! Today I have to resume a lot of the life I dumped about three weeks ago, and we'll see how it goes.  All this sudden readjustment to my regimen is driving me mad: every time I feel a shift in my metabolic makeup, I panic: did I eat too much? not enough? did my sugar level drop too low? am I heading into a coma? It is not conducive to a peaceful sleep.

On the plus side, I got out of bed ALIVE this morning, I have work and a place to live, and my ER nurse from last Thursday is now my friend on Facebook, so that's quite exciting; she's realy quite wonderful.

I'm going to a birthday celebration this evening. A dear friend turns 80 today and he's having a celebration at his apartment. He lives in a very nice building full of famous people. He bought the place many years ago and couldn't begin to afford it now. It will be great fun, I'm sure. We (Anthony and me) made his presents since "what do you get for an 80 year old who has most everything". We made a CD of music from the year 1928 including large doses of music from musicals of that year. He was interviewed in the New York Times in 1989 (a short article) and I found it, copied to a Word document, jazzed it up with fonts and color and put it in a frame and Anthony made some of his signature candy bar wrappers. He buys a box of Hershey bars and makes up a person specific wrapper on the computer to wrap around the outside. It's the (in this case) Greg Bar. I don't have any examples to post here but if I find one at home I will post it later.

I'll also tell you about my trip later.

The office is a madhouse so I must get back to work!

bk - So did Billy Porter and his team "update" the sound of the show as was indicated in its press release?

There was certainly more percussion than I remember, and it didn't sound as good as the original - at least my memory of the original.
Title: Re:THE PLANETS
Post by: bk on September 03, 2008, 08:19:22 AM
So for Ask BK Day...

Is there a show or two that you think would benefit from an update of its sound? -Whether through its arrangements and/or orchestrations.

Certainly I wasn't fond of the updates to A Chorus Line, as you know.  I'm a fan of the original orchestrations of most shows, so the redos, for me at least, are usually problematic.  For example, I don't like Tunick's reduced orchestrations for 110 In The Shade but do love the originals.   I gather most of the redos these days are for monetary reasons, cutting down the band size.

But unless it's part of a concept, I'd keep the originals every time.

I survived yesterday's dental visit (thanks for the vibes, Sing). I've never had anything really awful done at the dentist, but this was something new and I was really jittery about it. Thankfully, I have an excellent dentist, with the best bedside/chairside manner in the world. I will hate to lose him.

Bk, in the notes:

Quote
...the police are not enforcing the law and I think someone should file a class action lawsuit against them for ignoring it.

Well, there is no law requiring the police to enforce laws.

The best you could try for would be a civil action against a City Council, the County Sheriff's department, or the CHP. Next you would have trouble establishing standing - you have not been injured by the non-enforcement. In the bizarre circumstances in which the case could go to trail (it's tough suing governments without their permission) and you should win a victory, as a Tax Payer, you would be obligated to pay for the damage awards plus the court costs and lawyers' fees on both sides. Not such a bright move!

Glad you're enjoying it, and please write an amazon review when you're done - still waiting on Cilla's and Vixmom's and hopefully the vixter's when she finishes.  Having the amazon reviews really helps.

Rewind IS a work of fiction.  At some point, I may go back and revisit the years (and they're not over yet) as a record producer, but the way I'd originally intended - as a non-fiction work.

I saw the production, and I wanted to stand and yell "it's an opera parody" because nobody in that production sang well enough. You don't listen to a singer do "Glitter and Be Gay" and wonder if she'll have the high E-flat or wonder if, after the a cappella cadenza to "You Were Dead, You Know," the singers will be in the same key as the band.

Well, let's see....what I got out of that statement was:

That "Candide", for all intents and purposes, IS an opera.

That the production in 1999, for all intents and purposes, did not present it in a manner that was true to its operatic pedigree.

That the singers could not sing the score as it was meant to be sung.
That he was filled with constant doubt as to whether the singers would hit the proper notes during an a capella (i.e., sans orchestra) start to a song...and whether the notes they did hit would match the key the orchestra would be in when it started playing.

That, on the whole, he considered the entire production to be a huge waste of time.

But I've been known to be wrong.

That's close; I think CANDIDE is exactly what it was billed to be in 1956, a comic operetta, rght up there with Gilbert & Sullivan and Jacques Offenbach.

Otherwise, I think you got it. By George.

Leaves of Grass: A Nude Choral Reading of Whitman's Iconic Song of Myself

SYNPOSIS:

A daring new interpretation of Walt Whitman's most groundbreaking poem, 'Song of Myself', as realized by a chorus of 25 diverse and fully nude performers.

What will they think of next??

I'm just puttering around now until rehearsal, although I have to go back to the mail place - I picked up some mail and one package, only to find out that another package was there that they neglected to give me.  When I called, they denied having another package until I told them who signed for it, the exact time it was signed for, and which carrier delivered it.  Then they suddenly found it.

Apparently, Rob Ashford, choreographer of Curtains and Millie and Cry Baby is being brought in as a show doctor for Shrek.  Never mind that Mr. Ashford has few directing credits (one, I think), he's the man they call.  And everyone says that now the show will get better and be brilliant.  I simply remember when another show doctor, Rob Marshall, was brought in to save Seussical.  Didn't work.

This afternoon I took the girls to the vet for their shots.  We lost track of when they were due in the vet change and they were a couple months overdue.  It was quite the adventure.  I got them in their carriers without incident. Then the 20 + minute car ride to the vet.  They talked and talked and talked and did everything they could to display their dislike of traveling in the car.

Then we got to the vet and you would think they both forgot the meaning of meow. They got their shots (Callie gets the extra benedryl since she has had reactions)  all was well and on the way home, Boo found her voice and certainly let me know that she did not enjoy this trip at all.

They are now home and it looks so far so good.  I am especially glad that they have had their rabies shots.  We haven't had a bat yet, but it could happen any time.

Well, you request people individually and you can see who someone else's friends are. You can ignore a request, but I've never done that. You can also set your profile so that only the people who are your friends can see it. My "group of friends" includes many HHW denizens.  That's why I thought you might enjoy being there.

I did hear from my parents today via two 10-second e-mails.  Basically, my Mom said, "We're here," and "We're on our way back to Atlantic City."

In other words, a perfectly typical visit to NYC from your parents.     ::)

Exactly!

*And I'm still wondering why it took me ten minutes to explain to my Mom how to get to the St. James Theatre from Port Authority...

"So... Just listen... Port Authority is at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue.  The St. James is at 44th and Eighth Avenue, so it's just two blocks away."

-So, which way down 42nd Street do we need to walk?

"No, you go two blocks north on Eighth Avenue.  When you come out of the Port Authority, just walk towards the Chevy's, and the big CBS sign."

-So, if we're coming from the Burger King...

And speaking of recordings...

I know that a good number of DRs have special "collector's items" from the world of musical theatre, opera and concert work - a.k.a. bootlegs. Myself included.  I'm not meaning to put a damper on anyone's "happiness", but I have to say that it makes me a little uncomfortable reading when someone posts that they are listening to or watching an otherwise not-meant-for-public sale/consumption recording - as if it's something that is publicly available.

*I also know that some other "eyes" happen to check into this site every now and then, and it makes them "uncomfortable" from time to time too.

Last night, I (legally) downloaded "iTunes LIVE from SoHo: Spring Awakening," (appropriately, from iTunes) a six-track live recording with Duncan Sheik and members of the cast of the show and burned the songs onto a CD, to which I am now listening.  I made a little booklet (in color), but I misspelled one of the song titles. :P I hate it when that happens.  Now I MUST reprint it.

I tried to have the brief annoying telephonic call today.  The person was out when I called, and I specifically told this person's receptionist to try me at home after two-thirty or on my cell.  So, I don't hear anything at either number and I very nicely write an e-mail saying I'll call in the morning, and reiterating that I left a message.  I then get a snippy reply saying this person had tried to call me right back on my cell and that there was no answer and that he hadn't received a return phone call.  Unfortunately, I was in my car and I didn't even have the cell turned on.  I did turn it on exactly when I said I would, at two-thirty.  I had no message from this person at either number.  I wrote him back and told him to stop the snippiness and that we'd speak in the morning.  It WILL be brief.

I have made candy bar wrappers as well, I used to make them as part of goody bags to hand out at the end of the Vixter's bd parties when she was little

-So, if we're coming from the Burger King...

;)

Do we have the same mother?

They're saying now that it won't get to us until Saturday afternoon and will go to the east of Charlotte.

It may have been regional. I know it was filmed in New York... I was very excited when they said my name on my birthday... I was probably 6 or 7 at the time.....

Urgent - Important for a dear dear relative of mine -

Does anyone have a written version of the instructions for doing the maneuver with the head and chins that minimizes the appearance of the double/triple/quadruple chin when being photographed?

Or can someone write it up in some way?

I tried to explain it and just could not do so effectively.

Included in those three was the sad two part episode concerning Anjelica Huston's missing daughter. I loved the episode with its surprises, but the ending seemed a cheat, an easy end to the story that didn't involve Allison or the others finding some way to trap that scheming girl.

Next I watched the season premiere of BONES. Enjoyable but a very scattered episode with several things I was irritated by.

The new assistant (Edison) who replaced Zack was also featured in last year's season finale where he claimed he was gay. In tonight's show, he was talking about the string of girls he was sleeping with. Don't these folks watch their own show? Well, a moot point since it appeared he quit at the end of the show.

I got very irritated with the whole subplot with Angela and Hodgins, especially the nonsensical ending breaking them up. Didn't follow the logic of the breakup AT ALL.

I'll be glad to have them back in America. I did like some of Booth's comic irritation at doing things differently in England, and I was sad to see a potential long distance boy friend for Tempi killed off. But the mysteries were OK.

PROJECT RUNWAY. No question that the person sent packing deserved to go. I was cheering when it was announced.

As for the winner, I think I liked the third place finisher the best (black and yellow), but I had no real problem with the winner who also had a lovely, chic gown.

The Chin Maneuvers - that's the title of my next novel.  I had some snacks from Gelson's - fruit, rice cakes, and a tiny bit of crab salad from the salad bar - nothing terrible - the fruit (a nectarine and a peach) were very filling, though.

Jose - Based on this most recent exchange with your mom, it is becoming more and more clear that - at least in terms of sense of direction - I am channeling your mother.  What your mom said sounded like exactly what i would have said in response to what you said (especially the Burger King part).

Hmm...this looks like something similar, but not quite it.

HOW TO LOOK 10 LBS THINNER IN 5 MINUTES OR LESS

TIP #1 -- How To Eliminate A Double Chin
Eliminating double chins or excess skin under the chin is simple.
When you’re the photographer, all you have to do is raise the camera – get up higher so you see less of your subject’s neck.
When you’re the model, you have two options:
1) Tilt your chin upward and lean forward.  This will stretch the skin under the chin.
2) Position yourself (or your model) with one shoulder away from the camera, while turning the head to look back at the camera.  This will slim down body mass.  It’ll also flex muscles in the neck, making it appear more slim and youthful.
