Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both long and short, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently in Rumania.

And the word of the day is: POTATORY!
-
And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to dave in the valley.

Welcome seven GUESTS. Sad, ain't it?

Happy Birthday to DR dave in the valley.

I wonder how green is his valley?

Soylent green is people, you know.

It's not easy, being green.

Good morning!
I'll have a nice long drive to thing ab out the TOD; I'm driving to NC and picking up my brother and taking him to the Fig Festival and meet my friend Siglinda:
http://www.goathouserefuge.org/figfestival.html
It's a fundraiser for her animal shelter. She's one of the most amazing people I've ever known and I'm looking forward to my brother meeting her. And we'll have some bro-sis time, too!
-
MattH, we'll be passing near Charlotte on our way; I will wave at you!
-
I have not had nearly enough sleep to do this, but I'm hoping coffee will make up the difference!
-
Driving vibes for DR EDISAURUS.
TOD:
Fried chicken and mashed potatoes
Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes.
Chocolate Cake
-
Scary story about the LA train crash.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080913/ap_on_re_us/train_collision
-
Off to work. Oh well
-
Liver with bacon and onions.
Meatloaf.
Club sandwiches. (That's what she called it. It was leftover chicken sandwiches. But we got to use the lazy susan, which is what I liked.)
But my very favorite: Sauerbraten with potato dumplings and gingersnap gravy.
-
I've had an upset stomach and headache most of the night. So, I called in sick this morning. I've been sipping some hot tea. Which isn't really helping. Oh did I add my sinuses are aching. Sheesh! Anyway, I'm going to go back to sleep for awhile and then try to venture out and get a pancake or something....perhaps a poached egg.
-
I love my mom's roast beef and rice. She cooks a lot of basic but very tasty things. I liked a lot of them
-
I really do think that the last couple months have caught up with me and not getting much sleep Thursday night was just the last straw. Anyway, I'm going to shut off the light and go to sleep
-
Awww, feel better, Cillaliz.
-
Good morning, all! I have plenty of work sitting oin my desk, but I think I need to finish up the HUCK FINN scores today. Tonight, I have a Virgo birthday dinner with friends, so I need to buy a couple of birthday cards as well.
I think today's walk will be southward.
TOD: stuffed green peppers

My mother's matza brei was quite quite the tasty treat, and I looked forward to it every Passover. We would even have matza brei for a few weeks after Passover, using the leftover matza.
(I was reminded at the family wedding last weekend that a family catch-phrase was "Matza brei again?" but my memories of the dish are quite wonderful - maybe it was just that any food eight days in a row can get that kind of a reaction, or maybe the reaction was just in fun.)
Year-round, she had a knack with chopped liver that others have been unable to duplicate. And with food processors, it just ain't the same.
-
And one for matza
-
A Knack with chopped Liver, or My Mother's Matza Brei - that should be the name of something
-
I'm waiting for singdaw to post a photo of The Knack singing "My Sharona" while eating chopped liver
-
But until singdaw does that :) here's that great Mohegan Sun/My Sharona TV commercial that was all the rage not too long ago.
Have we ever found out who the Broadway dancers in this ad were?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hog6OOAKfI
-
Or should I say who they are, not were?
-
I'm only 48 posts away from post number 12345. Is that considered a milestone of sorts?
-
Why am I posting when I've got so many posts to catch up on?
-
I'm waiting for singdaw to post a photo of The Knack singing "My Sharona" while eating chopped liver
I simply have no idea what you mean. ::)

gingersnap gravy
YUM!! :)
-
I always want Mum to make a stuffed flank steak.
Long before the London Broil phase, we would get pocketed flanks fresh from the butcher at a very, very low price.
Just a regular flank stuffed with traditional dressing; still my favorite red meat meal.

Good Morning!
Greetings from Tom's Restaurant - a.k.a. The "Seinfeld" diner.
John just finished three slices of French toast, two eggs (scrambled), bacon and some toast. Whew! ;)
Until Laters...
-
DR JoseSPiano - glad that you are having such a great time with your family.
And I just LOVE these mobile reports we're getting, courtesy of your new iPhone! :)
-
MY MOTHER'S STUFFED VEAL...Yum!!!
and ROASTED CAPON...Why isn't Capon ever on a menu in a Restaurant?
-
I just heard the funniest thing on NPR -
They sent their intrepid report, Fiona, to talk about the experience of attending the Burning Man festival in Nevada.
She got out of her car, looked around, and said into the microphone:
"It looks like Sodom and Gomorrah: The Awkward Years" ;D
-
MattH, we'll be passing near Charlotte on our way; I will wave at you!
Please do, and also shout out a "Hi!" but do it loudly since I'll be engrossed in GREY'S AnATOMY and may not hear you otherwise.
-
Good morning!
Back to summer! After that cool, rainy day in the middle of the week, today we're back to blue skies and highs of 90. Argh! GO AWAY SUMMER!
-
I did sleep with windows open last night and the attic fan pulling in the 69 degree air, but you can imagine that it didn't stay cool for long, and now I've got the house shut up tight with the A/C ready to click on. It hasn't yet, but it's only a matter of time.
-
As I mentioned to DR Edie, I'll be continuing to work on GREY'S ANATOMY on Blu-ray today. I'm enjoying watching the episodes again even if the show's writers really painted themselves into corners early in the season. Nice to know by season's end, many of the corners had been finished off with doors opened to new, more appealing rooms.
-
I have last night's MONK to catch up with, too, but I may not get to it until tomorrow. I really want to get as much of GREY'S watched as I can today, and since I've seen the episodes already, I can cook and eat lunch and not have to sit with a pen and pad taking notes about shows where I already know what's going to happen.
-
TOD:
My mom made wonderful fried chicken and I always loved her scrambled eggs.
-
Saturday morning greetings! It's a family-filled 3-day weekend for me. Rob and Mary Linda are here and my mom is coming over for the Michigan Wolverines' first appearance on our new TV.
TOD - My mother used to make faboo chicken and dumplings - the fluffy drop kind - with amazing chicken gravy. I've never been able to duplicate this particular dish.
-
And the word of the day is: POTATORY!
POTATORY is where all the dead spuds that weren't really all that good but weren't really all that bad are sent.
-
My mother made really good tacos, and really good cheese enchiladas, and really good chile.
All of which was odd, because she hailed from Syracuse, NY. Until she married my Dad and moved to Burbank, CA, she had never even heard of such dishes.
I make danged good chile, but have never had any success with making tacos or enchiladas.
-
Soylent green is people, you know.

-
SOYLENT NIGHT - the name given to Christmas dinner in - oh, wait, we've done this one before
-
Although that's never stopped me before
-
My mother prepared two foods that I've never found bettered:
1. fried chicken
2. cocoanut cake
She would NEVER give me the recipe for either of them and thus, they're lost forever.
-
This should take us to page three.
-
And now I must head downstairs to check the mail and get lunch started.
WBBL.

Since I didn't post yesterday... heck, I didn't even get online all day, except at work, which is strictly work stuff...
yesterday's TOD:
I've made a list of the DVDs in our collection that I have not watched, and finding it extensive have resolved to do something about that. So far, I've watched a documentary called The Adventures of Errol Flynn, which is a biography, and another documentary called Chuck Jones, Extremes & Inbetweens, which has some biographical stuff in it but isn't really a biography.
And Heroes Season 2 has arrived, so I've started watching that, as well.
BOOKS:
At the Japanese Table, by Lesley Downer. So far, lots of introductory material - I just started going through the recipes yesterday, and have only found one that interests me so far, Miso Soup with Pork. But, like a lot of cookbooks, the author has started with soups and will (hopefully) get to more complex dishes later. I need to find me some bonito flakes, and kombu. And red miso.
-
I've had an upset stomach and headache most of the night. So, I called in sick this morning. I've been sipping some hot tea. Which isn't really helping. Oh did I add my sinuses are aching. Sheesh! Anyway, I'm going to go back to sleep for awhile and then try to venture out and get a pancake or something....perhaps a poached egg.
I'm sorry this trip is not going as you had hoped, or expected.
Feel better soon!
-
Hello, I'm awake again after sleeping another 3 1/2 hours. I called and told them I wasn't going to make it this morning and went back to sleep. I still don't feel great but my stomach feels better. I haven't eaten anything today so I'm going to go find something to eat. As much as I was disappointed with what the school is, I didn't really want to miss it all together. I did do the home work, after all.
-
Something else Mom made that I've never found anyone able to match... her lemon meringue pie. She used a graham cracker crust, with a really good lemon filling (made from lemons from her father-in-law's trees, which would arrive by the bagsfull), and the meringue was swirled and toasted under the broiler, not that silly beehive dome I see too often elsewhere.
Chef Jay Caputo beamed when I told him the lemon tart I had at his restaurant, Porcini House, was the closest and best I've had since Mom's. I didn't have the heart to tell him that his would have been better with a graham cracker crust.
-
Thanks Jane and Laura. I'll see what I feel like after eating. I may just say heck with it at this point and take the metro into the city to see the WWII and Pentagon Memorials. They are really the only two places I wanted to see if I had time this trip.
-
DR Michael S-We are HOUSE fans in this house. I believe it was during season 3 we almost stopped watching, then the last two seasons were better than ever.
I read Hugh Laurie now makes $400,000 per episode.
-
DR Cilla, I hope you don't go home without doing something fun.
-
DR Cillaliz - Glad to hear you're feeling better today. Even if you don't go back to school, maybe this trip will end up being a much-needed R & R for you.
-
Sounds like Hurricane Ike was terrible but not as dire as the most dire predictions by almost everyone - in fact, about half of what they predicted - a very good thing, because of this thing had been what they predicted it would have been truly horrendous. I did read something amusing - gas prices jumped back up because of FEAR that the storm MIGHT get near some oil places. Of all the things about this storm, somehow that is the most predictable.
-
I suppose if the storm doesn't get near or do damage to the oil places prices will drop again, but only after several threats from the government.
-
I read Hugh Laurie now makes $400,000 per episode.
Many people do not realize that some of our more illustrious HHW denizens make at least that much per post.
-
CNN tv reports that people waiting in long lines at gas stations are watching the prices being revised upwards as they sit there.
Do the prices ever come down that fast?
-
Too bad I didn't get gas earlier in the week. I repeat because it needs to be repeated: The price rise is based on FEAR not actual problems. It looks like there will be no actual problems.
-
I know FJL will be interested to know that NYMF is doing their usual stuff - touting about seven shows out of all the shows, and only the ones with name power and sold out shows.

Good Afternoon!
Greetings from the southeast corner of Central Park. John wanted to have his face drawn by one of the "freelance artists" that line the paths here, so his father and I are taking a little sit-down break while he's being rendered in charcoal.
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Still very overcast here. Yesterday the sun didn't come out until almost three or something.

while he's being rendered in charcoal.
I guess that's better than being rendered in chicken fat.

DR JoseSPiano's avatar makes me want to grab a napkin to catch the drips.
Ummm... Nevermind...
-
DR Cillaliz - I hope you start to feel better, and I hope you have a good time in DC.
*The National Gallery of Art and The Museum of the American Indian have wonderful food service/cafeterias. ;)

It does sound like the formula has worked for what NYMF seems to feel are its objectives, and I guess we have to accept that NYMF's objectives (like those of any festival) have to be about promoting NYMF, so that it can continue and crucially be there for developing musicals in future years. I hope it's not controversial to say that a festival probably has to care about having a few shows a year that go on to lives outside the festival, and can't really concern itself with which specific ones do have those lives. I'm sure they're touting the later life of Brain from Planet X when they have the info, and they've also given Last Starfighter good publicity when we had our further development in Seattle (OK, actually Issaquah) - the cumulative effect of lives-beyond-NYMF are helpful for NYMF, but they need one or two big ones a year - and even if they only have two shows a year flourish in a notable way, that's seen as a successful festival by the public, by donors, and by others wanting to be part of the festival in the future.
-
Will anyone be participating in Earthdance Peace Prayer today? It is supposed to be a world wide event.
Earthdance Miami will be webcast LIVE and we will have screens streaming footage from Earthdance festivals in Greece, Australia, California and Amsterdam.
-
Dare I state that both Brain From Planet X and the musical of Last Starfighter are both better off as properties for having done NYMF, notwithstanding any "aggravation" (for want of a better word) may have been involved - especially with such "aggravation" having been a year in the past?
I suspect Noel would also think that his show, Such Good Friends, also is better off as a property for having done NYMF, not to mention Noel himself as a marketable talent.
-
Rotten sentence construction on my part, but you get the iedea. :)
-
Almost done here in Central Park, and then we will start making our way down 5th Avenue: The Apple Store, FAO Schwarz, MoMA, American Girl Place (gifts for the nieces), Rockefeller Center, etc. And then we will head down to South Ferry to ride the ferry. Or at least get a good look at the water.
-
I think BK should thank FJL for the "repeat three times" suggestion. It hasn't helped my eye quite yet, but think how bad the post total would have been yesterday without it!
-
Emphasis is on "yet," but I've been sending vibes your way repeatedly
-
Post Total - that's the name of my new breakfast cereal
-
Rendered duck fat is devine.
-
The Dare of Fred - that's the title of my next cartoon.
(Done in the style of Chuck Jones, of course.)

TCB - Alas, we can't even find out their names, let alone get you their phone numbers.

I said "alas" but maybe it was the lads you were wondering about.

T.O.D.
Without a doubt....
1) My mom's tamale pie
2) My mom's scalloped potatoes and ham
3) My mom's stuffed flank steak

I wish my eyes would get better, too!
I need a nap.

Why no photos???
-
Cilla, what a shame that you aren't feeling well. Try to salvage some fun from this trip - you deserve it.
-
TCB - Alas, we can't even find out their names, let alone get you their phone numbers.
Oh yeah! I bet Jose knows their names.
-
Hmmm, as usual, my posts have caused others to flee.
-
Hi all. I went out and got some food near the hotel and some Claritin. I still don't feel too hot. I called my mom and she said, "Well, why don't you try to get an earlier flight home, then" Since I wasn't scheduled to leave until 7:30 tomorrow night I decided that was a good plan. I called Midwest and the change fee wasn't bad at all, so I decided to change to the 11:00 AM flight tomorrow. I will have to get up early to get the rental car returned and get to the airport, but it's better than getting to my house close to midnight (after the drive from Omaha).
-
Or perhaps...................
flea
-
Well, we ended up taking a little over to the Nespresso Cafe/Boutique on Madison Avenue. We're having some coffee and pastries with one of my brother's Coast Guard buddies, Steve. -Who I believe has graced these pages before. Hmmm... Caffeine and sugar. :)
-
Oh yeah! I bet Jose knows their names.
Well at least their online ones.
-
And pictures shall be posted later.
-
It's funny, but while I don't feel well, I don't feel bad about the trip. I am thinking of going for a drive. Theodore Roosevelt Island looked interesting. I know I have to be going north on the George Washington Parkway to get there, but it looked like there are placed to park. If I get stuck in traffic, I get stuck in traffic. I'm not in a hurry today.
-
Dare I state that both Brain From Planet X and the musical of Last Starfighter are both better off as properties for having done NYMF, notwithstanding any "aggravation" (for want of a better word) may have been involved - especially with such "aggravation" having been a year in the past?

I agree with much that you say, but feel bad (as I did last year, and not especially for me personally) for the shows that get none of the NYMF promotion - such as the show that these guys I've spoken to several times are doing. I know they're feeling the same frustration we all felt last year. But in the end, NYMF is a good thing that could be better with some careful thought and changes.
-
Back from the long jog. I decided not to wait and see (like yesterday) if the overcast would burn off. It did, about five minutes before I got home. Figures.
-
we ended up taking a little over
Well...not that little...
[ a La Cage reference ;) ]
-
We're STILL on page four?
-
I'm drinking wah-wah, as Helen Keller once said.
-
I sure wish they'd do a new transfer of The Miracle Worker instead of the poor non-anamorphic thing they did years ago. If they could do it for Twelve Angry Men they can certainly do it for The Miracle Worker. It would have been nice if they'd done a SE prior to Miss Bancroft's passing, but Miss Duke is still with us and I'm sure she'd have great stories, of both film and B'way play.
-
Who else from the film is still alive? Inga Swenson? Andrew Prine?
-
Well, Mr. Prine definitely is, since I saw him two months ago at the Ray Courts show.
-
At long last page five.
-
Will we never get to page six?
-
I am my own frenzy.
-
Anyone want this list of DVDs before I take them in for trade later?
-
No? Then I'm packin' 'em up.
-
People come, people go, like Grand Hotel.
-
Welcome nine GUESTS.
-
We're walking... We're walking... Down Fifth Avenue...
-
Okay, what IS this. People here and no posts since my last post of over thirty minutes ago. This will NOT do, and I will personally bitch-slap each and every person from here to eternity and hell and back.
-
I took a nice hot shower and feel all sparkly clean now. The real question is - food.
-
There were five people here and three of them left without posting. I shall have to ponder this, oh, yes, I shall have to ponder this.
-
I'm going to do some errands and whatnot, and I shall return shortly.
-
I am returning without posting, too.
-
Back from errands - once again, no mail - very upsetting as I'm waiting on invoices to be paid.
-

It must be a popular game with professional models.
-
Is it easy to post from an iPhone?
Yes, it is. -Once you get used to the touch keyboard. And the "smart spelling" really comes in handy too.
However, I can't seem to upload photos. I think.
-
I see people but I don't see posts. Maybe I should just lock it up :) Maybe I just should. That would teach the errant and truant and non-posters a thing or three, wouldn't it? If they came here at their leisure and the posts were locked? Wouldn't that just teach the whippersnappers and also the snapperwhippers. We have the technology, you know.
-
Is smart spelling where it predicts the word you're typing?
-
I'm not naming any names, but Ben, for example, left without posting. Skammen.

Another decline in the general taste level!

Perhaps he had nothing to say. I may check the board out during the day, but if I feel there's nothing I want to mention, I go back to other projects.

I think BK should thank FJL for the "repeat three times" suggestion. It hasn't helped my eye quite yet, but think how bad the post total would have been yesterday without it!
I'm sorry about that, and shouting out loud doesn't seem to be getting Craig on the West Coast. As long as the shouting helps the actual job getting, good job getting, part of the wish I'll be happy.

This must be very disappointing for your.....FEEL BETTER SOON! I hope you don't have that horrid summer cold MBarnum & I both had. Obviously it is traveling through the country.

Guess you aren't terribly disappointed :)

I often do the same thing.
CONTINUED EYE VIBES TO YOU!
-
You can always say hello to everyone and add that you have nothing to say.
-
No one can say we didn't get to page six - barely.
-
I e-mailed both of the companies that have an outstanding invoice - they both said it was going out Monday, which is about three weeks late (I have a deal with all these people that they need to pay upon receipt of the invoice - but they forget).
-
I must post if I am ever to get to post #12345.
-
It feels like it's 35 posts away.
-
Is smart spelling where it predicts the word you're typing?
Yes, it is.
*And, bk, I think you need to go for a little drive this afternoon. Or two. ;)
-
bk - Maybe if you bought iPhone's for all your DRs we would post more. ;D
-
I think BK should thank FJL for the "repeat three times" suggestion. It hasn't helped my eye quite yet, but think how bad the post total would have been yesterday without it!
Not sure I understand the reasoning but at least now I know why folks are doing it. I was thinking something was wrong with the server.
-
Back from errands - once again, no mail - very upsetting as I'm waiting on invoices to be paid.
I got no mail today either, much to my chagrin.
-
One of these fine days I'll get an iPhone - I do have a birthday coming up, after all.
-
I'm due several packages, a couple of which I'm most anxious to get. I think I forgot to mention that I found another reasonable copy of But He Doesn't Know The Territory, also signed, and it's on its way to me and I want it NOW.
-
Bk - Yes. it felt miserable at the time. But aside from [a] the dollars (which can be substantial), and any opportunities lost due to the time spent on the NYMF production (which should almost 100% of the time be none), it seems to me that the only way NYMF can actually hurt a show's prospects is if the show gets a negative review in the New York Times. If you accept that concept - and you may not - then it's either neutral or beneficial.
And they are taking a good step in the right direction by having fewer shows this year, and it seems they're not segregating the shows based on Next Link and Invited Shows in their publicity, as far as I can tell.
-
Here's another vote for a new remaster of THE MIRACLE WORKER. My favorite film of all-time, I really can't stand to watch the nonanamorphic DVD and thus don't watch it nearly as much as I would if it were done properly.
Same with the Hammer HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION. Love them, but can't stand those nonanamorphic letterbox transfers.
-
I will take a drive at some point. The gas prices here are holding, but I'm told that gougers in other States have raised them, some over 5.00 a gallon. Those people and companies ought to be run out of town on a rail.
-

Yes, Witness, definitely. And there are a bunch of other MGM/UA titles that were non-anamorphic that should be redone. It's really ridiculous this far into the DVD game.
-
I spent the afternoon watching more GREY'S ANATOMY. I should be able to finish the episodes tonight if I'm not interrupted, but I likely won't get to the bonus features until tomorrow.

Bk - Yes. it felt miserable at the time.
They've made a couple of improvements this year, the most important of which is less shows, so that shows sharing a theater are not quite as constrained as we were in terms of set storage, and having five other shows share a light and sound board, which can, as you know, be madness personified.
-
Yes, Witness, definitely. And there are a bunch of other MGM/UA titles that were non-anamorphic that should be redone. It's really ridiculous this far into the DVD game.
Yes, like ANNIE HALL. It only won the Best Picture Oscar but naturally it's not worthy of an anamorphic transfer.

I have no idea what I want to watch this evening. I've seen all the DVDs that I want to in the western set from Warners, and I'm not at all certain I want to watch War Of The Gargantuas, never one of my Toho favorites. Not sure what that leaves.
-
Most memorable of this afternoon's episodes involved the niece of the hospital director whose cancer had returned. She just wants to die in peace after years of struggling against the disease, and everyone else wants her to submit to more chemo even though the cancer has spread alarmingly. Very moving episode.

It's hard to articulate. My family sometimes just calls it being a nudge or a repetitive pain the neck. The three-times-or-more thing seems to work very often because if it's something I want for my own benefit, people know i really care about it and if they're inclined to care that I care about it, they may take action. (Of course, if they don't give a damn about what I want anyway, it just annoys them but I'm rarely worse off than if I had never bought it up since I've only annoyed people who don't care what I want anyway.) If it's something I wish for and care deeply about for the other person's benefit, then they suspect that I'm going to hound them until they take steps to do something about it, and in many cases they'll do what they need to for themselves just a little more quickly just to avoid being nudged to the point of annoyance.

I took Mae-Ling and Wae-Ling to the arboretum today. Then we baked a birthday cake.

At my check-up, my new doctor told me and showed me (a) that I have a hernia; and (b) that it is absolutely nothing to worry about, and that I can't even use it as an excuse to avoid lifting heavy stuff. I looked it up on the internet and it looks like 40% of adults have a hiatal hernia.

I'm heading back down now to enjoy more adventures at Seattle Grace with Meredith, Izzie, and the gang.

I am getting REALLY hungry and I have no idea what I want to eat, whether I'll need to go to the market or whether I'll go sit in a restaurant, or what. All I know is my tummy needs FOOD now.

I just watched the deleted scenes from "Maurice (http://www.amazon.com/Maurice-Merchant-Collection-James-Wilby/dp/B00014NE62/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1221342133&sr=1-1)" with James Wilby, Hugh Grant and Rupert Graves. :) I've had this DVD for several years and I finally had the chance to check out the widescreen-ness of the movie. It's very nice. Widescreen TVs are SO much better than regular 4:3 TVs. ;D

Right now I am taking a break from what is probably one of the most tension filled Bollywood movies I have yet to see, AMIR (2008) about a young Muslim doctor in Mumbai whose family is kidnapped by extremists who. Unless the young man helps them pull off an act of terrorism in the city center, they will kill his family.
It is quite chilling. No songs, and it is the lead actor's debut on the big screen (he is a tv actor, normally).

I'm off to the Village to a restaurant I don't know, Vila Moscone, for a Virgo birthday dinner. I need to stop at Godiva on the way, wish I could have some, and buy two gifts.
It will be nice to see friends, but I'd just as soon stay in.

Topic of the Day: a German dessert called dampfnudeln. It's a steamed, sweet bread that's covered with a vanilla sauce. My mom is German and makes it once in a great while. I don't know the specific recipe that my mom uses, but some that I've come across on the Internet (trying to find out how to spell it) seem similar. There are some recipes that use raspberry or poppy seeds, and my mom's doesn't. And she's always made it as a dessert, not as a savory dish. It's delish! ;D
-
And now, I have to go to work...after I take a shower.
Have a good day, all!
-
There are no songs in BLACK, either, DR Elmore.
If I'm not mistaken, there are also no songs in WATER.
I know that there are few songs in PARANEETA.
Three of my favorite Bollywood films and they are practically songless.

No Songs??? HERESY!!!!!

But before I go...

Jane - Shouting to the spirits is a great concept, but my birth date means I was born to be a nudge. :)
According to Goldschneider & Elffers' "Secret Language of Birthdays"...
MAY 2 - "THE DAY OF HUMAN OBSERVATION"
Strengths: PRODUCTIVE, PERFECTIONIST, OBSERVANT
Weaknesses: INTRUSIVE, AUTHORITARIAN, ABRASIVE
"Once they are on to a particular subject or activity they're like a dog with a bone, and will usually drive an argument about as far as it can possibly go... "
-
Oh, I guess that drove people away.

I did not find December 7th.

Skip went there by train. It can range form 70 to 90-plus minutes of actually travel, including the connection on that shuttle they call the "dinky," depending on whether you get an express or a local.
-
He's coming back by car, since some friends who saw the show today had driven from Manhattan. But it turns out he's not home yet because they had to drop the friends' aunt off in New Jersey before coming back to Manhattan.

Thanks DRs George and Jane.
I was feeling better this afternoon and decided that I wanted to go for a drive and take a test run back to the airport. I got to where you turn to Memorial Bridge and said "Heck with it I want to see the WWII Memorial" I turned, crossed the bridge, drove to the parking area nearest the monument, found a space right away and visited. I found it beautiful and very moving. I grew up knowing many WWII vets including many of my parents' closest friends and my uncle. While many of them didn't want to talk about it, they did have an intense patriotism and a sense of what they fought for and won. It was quite emotional for me to think of them in that beautiful setting.
-
I have a list of DVDs, too, if anyone's interested. I'll actually post mine ;) :
Speed Racer
Will & Grace 8
The Dali Dimension
Edward the King
Search for Mengele
Leonard Bernstein (huge new boxed set)
John Oliver Terrifying Times
Terry Pratchett's Discworld Collection
Caroline in the City 1
Cybill Collector's Edition
Mulan
Mummy Collector's Set
Art Tatum
Outfoxed
Alfresco (Monty Pythonesque 80s show with Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson, etc.)
Jimmy Dore
Dick Tracy's G Men
Eleventh Hour
Dave's World 1
Spiderman 2
In a few days, I'll have Torchwood 2 and others available.

I was going to go see Lincoln, but some guy had a microphone and a speaker and was spewing hate for Palin so loud I could hear it from WWII. I decided that it would be impossible to have a quiet reflective moment with Abe if that was going on there. There wasn't really a crowd listening to the guy. I thought it was kind of amusing he was attacking a Republican in front of Lincoln, who was also a Republican.
-
I did go pay a visit to Thomas Jefferson. He fascinates me the most of the founding fathers, for all sorts of reasons. I was starting to not feel so hot by the time I got there, so it was nice to sit in the lower level and watch the movie, go to the book shop, etc.

DR Cilla, I'm so glad you made it to the beautiful WWII Memorial.
Do you have nose drops, or something, to keep your ears from plugging up during the flight?

I drove back to the hotel, once again without any problems - I love driving on the George Washington Parkway - it's so beautiful. Anyway, I was going to go to a restaurant I've been interested in going to, but I realized when I got close to the hotel that I needed to get back to the room - well the facilities in the room - as soon as possible. So, I'm staying in tonight. I ordered room service so we'll see how that goes.
-
I find people annoying, and to be so loud at any of the memorials is just outright rude.
-

The Claritin seems to have helped that problem. The problem that remains is more of a digestive nature.

My feeling exactly. I understand free speech and am all in favor of it, but I also think that there are a lot of people who may only get one chance to go see some of these places and it's really uncalled for to ruin their experience. Now if this was a scheduled event, that happens, but if it was, he didn't have much of a crowd.

I did buy an interesting book I hadn't heard of before, it's called "Jefferson's 'Bible' The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth" Apparently, Jefferson was interested in the moral teachings of Jesus so he cut the bible up and put it together in a different way. I'm not usually one to buy religioius books, but all things Jefferson tend to fascinate me and I didn't know he had written this. Apparently his book was given to Senators when they were sworn into office from 1904 until not too long ago.

JMK - Sorry about your friend

Miss Dixie Bell needs a few good vibes; it seems her left eye has become swollen - she looks a lot like poor DR TCB at this moment. . .The eye was fine all day, it was only after dinner that we noticed anything askew. Her behavior is normal, so it doesn't seem to be drastically bothering her. Perhaps an allergy, perhaps a speck of something which shouldn't be there.
I got 25mg of Benedryl into her.
She's happy, sitting here by the computer waiting for her bedtime treats.
If the swelling hasn't gone down in the morning, I shall definitely call the vet's emergency service.

Bless me! I think I am cured!
If I could only make Dixie Bell look at the computer screen. . .

DR Jane - As for your Facebook inquiry...
If you're talking about your Facebook Chat log, well... The Chat function normally keeps all of your "conversation(s)" until you clear it. However, I think there may have been a purge of sorts over the past day or two when they made the permanent switch to the "New Facebook".
Now, if you're talking about messages you've sent back and forth, well, those should still be in your Inbox.

My regular doctor's first day back from vacation is Monday. I am tempted to go see him to complain about being dismissed by the other doctor regarding the MRSA. But if my eye looks better, I will probably just skip it.
-
TCB, maybe the doctor didn't want to admit he wasn't capable of lancing your eye, if so best he didn't.

DR Cillaliz - I'm glad you were able to make it into DC to visit the WWII Memorial, as well as The Jefferson.
*I have to say, the GW Parkway always scared me. Too many curves, no lights at night, everchanging speed zones(!), and the exits don't "match" up on either side. There were still times in the recent past where I found myself trying to get off at one exit, only to realize that that exit only existed on the other-bound side of the Parkway. -Then I would have to turn around in the CIA parking lot... :-\
-
I do hope you will have a discussion about it at some point. Is the other doctor always the back-up in the office?
-
DR TCB, you do have a photo of how your eye looked, you could always take that with you to your doctor
-
My regular doctor's first day back from vacation is Monday. I am tempted to go see him to complain about being dismissed by the other doctor regarding the MRSA. But if my eye looks better, I will probably just skip it.
DR TCB - Regardless, I think you should just go see your doctor just to make sure everything is still on a healing course, and also to keep him up-to-date.
-
TCB, maybe the doctor didn't want to admit he wasn't capable of lancing your eye, if so best he didn't.
It wouldn't have been my eye, but the sac of fluid under the eye. Every time I have had MRSA, the first thing the doctor has done was to lance the sac to remove the poison.
-
DR Cillaliz - I also hope your stomach settles down sooner rather than later.
*And the late summer/early fall allergy season in DC always did me in. I never had a problem in the Spring, just the Fall. Remember: D.C. was built on a swamp. ;)

Is that at the "George Bush Center for Intelligence" or however it's worded? I had to laugh at that sign. I haven't driven the GW Parkway at night and can see that it would be very confusing. I made one wrong turn and it took me a little driving around to get back in the right place. The exits not matching up isn't a problem for me because I don't have any idea what any of the exits are, but I could see that they are different.

There are about ten doctors in the Clinic. The one I saw is not my favorite, but the way I was feeling that day, I would have booked an appointment with Sweeney Todd!
And HE would have lanced it!

Well, hopefully, you won't have an "adventure" come morning - or a few hours from now.

It was a one-two punch coupled with the school not being what I thought it would be so I didn't feel a need to tough it out. I felt much better after the Claritin kicked in. I normally take it when I travel but I forgot it this time.
I have to admit I'm enjoying lounging around the room, I'm going to make some chamomile tea and take a nice hot shower before I go to bed. There's a National Triathalon here tomorrow so I need to check on road closures in the morning when I need to go
-
I think I'll be fine in the morning. I do have to change planes in Milwaukee this time, but it's a nice airport, fairly small with classical music etc. I'll be curious to see if we get chocolate chip cookies this time.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
My mom would make a "Chinese Pot Roast" from time to time. I believe the recipe came from Better Homes & Gardens. It was basically a pot roast that was cooked with soy sauce and star anise. As much as I liked the beef, my favorite part of the meal were the carrots and potatoes that cooked along with the meat.
*I also learned NOT to eat the star anise pods - or at least chew them... YEOW!!!!

True, but close enough to the eye if the guy didn't know what he was doing.
Have you read about a controversy regarding lancing or leaving it alone?

DR JMK - My condolences to you on the loss of your friend and colleague.

I'd asked the other day about the DVDs, and then today, and when no one responded I just took them over to Amoeba, where I got very good credit - and happily they had a very pricey CD set that I had to have - five George Shearing albums on four CDs, from what he recorded for MPS label in the late 1970s, including one never before released album - that one is with full orchestra, spectacularly arranged and conducted by the brilliant Robert Farnon. Considering it's an import and five albums on four CDs, the price wasn't that bad, but my credit more than covered it and several other CDs. I looked at the DVDs, but nothing caught my eye, really, and I really, even with credit, balk at paying full price for their DVDs. But this Shearing orchestral CD is so beautiful.
-
The other four albums are all trio albums - piano, bass, guitar.
-
Today I went to the dentist, then I went to the doctor to get a script for bloodwork so I can get my thyroid meds renewed then I came home and did some laundry, then took the Vixter to the dentist,
The day better then. The Vixter's high school team had theri first official soccer game, which they won 3 - 0. Vixgranparents and Vixdad and I were all there to watch the game. Afterwards we went to the local diner for lunch.
The Vixter was "dying for onion rings" since she read the description of Adrianna's onion rings in Murder in the Grove this morning
-
She said they were very good even if they were not stacked into a tower
-
Well I must be off... laters
-
How was the Vixdate with the Vixboyfriend?
-
Vixmom et al - I'm pulling another big batch o' DVDs in the morning and I'll list them tomorrow.
Cilla and vixmom, please don't forget to do amazon reviews - they're very helpful, really they are.

I got a most delightful gift in the mail from DR Cillaliz! LOL! Thanks Priscilla!! That was sweet of you! ;D

Glad you like it!! I got that a couple years ago and FINALLY got around to sending it.
-
BK, I'll do a review. I've just had other things on my mind. When I get home, I'll have no other trips planned in the foreseeable future so hopefully life will get back to normal
-
Excellent!
-
I just can't think of many things that are more pleasurable than listening to George Shearing play the piano - a true poet, and these charts by Farnon are so lush and beautiful.
-
They're currently having their gorgeous way with Look At That Face, by Mr. Newley and Mr. Bricusse.

And now for a few pictures from the past 24 hours...
Here is my brother, Mike (he's #3 of the 4 of us), and his son/my nephew, John Michael. I figured I would start off John's first visit to NYC with his first subway ride. *He really liked the rats. ;)

The Canelé de Bordeaux from the Nespresso Café and Boutique:
It was basically a baked "custard" - at least that's how it was described. However, it just tasted like a really good timbale of French toast. ;)
-
I see no one in your family is a member of the clean plate brigade - my mother would have slapped all of you silly.
-
I went to the Studio City Cafe with a friend and had my usual barbecue chicken sandwich and teeny-tiny salad and we split the wings, so four wings. So, I'm just fine and dandy, what with the long jog and all - of course, I really have a hankering for some CAKE or PIE, but I shall be strong. I may eat one of those 100 calorie packs of cookies that I seem to have but don't remember buying.
-
That album of Shearing/Farnon was faboo and will be getting many plays. Now I'm going to try and watch something, and then I'll move on to the trio albums.
-
I see no one in your family is a member of the clean plate brigade - my mother would have slapped all of you silly.
Well, I cleaned my plate - which consisted of a serving of corned beef hash, a single egg over-easy, and two slices of rye toast.
The French toast, bacon, eggs and toast in the middle of the picture were what John ordered for himself, and I believe he did a pretty job of almost finishing all of that.
-
I can recommend Cafe Mosconi at 69 McDougal wholeheartedly: my filet of sole was one of the most scrumptious things I've ever tasted, and everything ordered by the 14 guests and birthday boys looked absolutely amazing. I had a small bit of champagne to toast the three of us, and when I got home and tested my glucose level, it was only 76; Eat your heart out, DR MBarnum!
So, after all this madness about posts today, I cetainly didn't expect to come home to 11 pages of posts. I suppose there's something to be learned but I have no idea wtf it may be.
-
And here is John having his portrait done in Central Park. Well... He started off smiling... ;)

And, finally... Here is Uncle Jojo and his nephew after having visited The Apple Store, FAO Schwarz, MoMA (there's a story for this one ;)), the Nintendo Store, etc., etc., etc...
-Oh, and we had also bought some candy while we were at FAO Schwarz, so... :)

Sssshhhh....
We picked up some birthday presents for my niece, Alyssa - John's sister. -Her birthday is next week. Her father bought "Mia", and her uncle bought the coordinating pajamas and some accessories.
Remember.... SSssshhhhh.... :-X
;)

He played in my hometown when I was in high school. The concert had a big impression on me. I loved the music, of course but he was also very friendly and kind to us
-
John Michael looks like he's having a blast on his first visit to NYC - and Uncle JoJo looks like he's really enjoying being the tour guide!
If I were JM's mother, I'd probably cry when I saw the charcoal drawing.

As always, DR Jose's family pics are delightful.

DR Jose, wonderful photos. Glad everyone had a great time.

While on my way to the mailbox I met up with a woman down the road I haven’t seen in at least a year. We would still be chatting if her husband hadn’t come looking for her when the dogs returned home on their own. ;D Long before I had used my cell phone to inform Keith my arrival would be delayed.

Definitely the good kind of tears. I think his pensive look is very sweet.

DR Jose, wonderful photos. Glad everyone had a great time.
And tomorrow... Well... My brother is taking the 6:00 train back to D.C. However, before then, he's made a lot - A LOT - of plans for him and John before the head to Penn Station. Heck, I'm not even sure I could accomplish all the things he wants to get done in that window of time. -But we're going to try!
-
Now that picture needs to be in a frame!
And if you notice how I sat with my body toward the left while craning my neck to the right...
;D
-
I only saw Mr. Shearing live once - at Carnegie Hall, I think, with Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth - what an evening THAT was.
-
Alas, I wasn't in the proper stance for this picture... But it's close...
That's my brother's Coast Guard buddy, Steve. -Who has actually graced these pages before. He met us for our afternoon snack at the Nespresso Café, and my brother and him just went out to grab an adult beverage or two while Uncle Jojo watches over John. *Steve's also a brand new father! His daughter was born a week ago. :)

You mean more exciting than the Roosevelt Middle School Auditorium in Estherville, Iowa
-
Very sorry to read about the passing of your guitarist friend, DR JMK.
-
I had a wonderfully weepy time revisiting the rest of the GREY'S ANATOMY episodes. That episode with the two soldiers tears me up every time I see it. So beautiful.
-
And the season finale filled with kisses and lots of emotion. A great wallow. I loved seeing it again.
-
I began on the bonus features but only got one of them watched: an 8-minute introduction to the three new females who joined the cast this year as regulars. A puff piece to be sure, but nice to hear how they got the jobs. Chyler Leigh (Lexie) didn't even have to audition! She got the job during the interview.
-
I am watching a very long but so far interesting motion picture on DVD. It's one I've had for a while, and I don't think I've watched more than two of the six movies included in this set.
-
Tonight I recorded off HBO-HD one of last year's big Oscar nominees: MICHAEL CLAYTON. I never saw it in theaters nor have I rented/bought the DVD/Blu-ray/HD-DVD.
I had no idea that I'd have ANY free time this weekend to watch anything for fun, but I might actually be able to watch MICHAEL CLAYTON tomorrow afternoon.

Sounds like Hurricane Ike was terrible but not as dire as the most dire predictions by almost everyone - in fact, about half of what they predicted - a very good thing, because of this thing had been what they predicted it would have been truly horrendous.
Actually, the predictions were almost spot on except for the height of the storm surge. Estimates said 20 feet, reality was 15.5 feet. The surge protection for Galveston is 17 feet.
Another two feet of surge and Galveston would have been destroyed, the Houston ship channel severely compromised, and the oil refineries seriously damaged.

And, there was enough destruction to more than justify the mandatory evacuations.

I will take a drive at some point. The gas prices here are holding, but I'm told that gougers in other States have raised them, some over 5.00 a gallon. Those people and companies ought to be run out of town on a rail.
The run-up of pump prices was done at the independent retailer level - the oil distribution companies did not do a bump-up of wholesale prices. Most states will prosecute retail price gougers given sustantiation. The Texas AG was on TV inviting complaints.

The report I read said the estimate was 22 feet and the reality was 11. It's all horrible, but one is catastrophic and one isn't. Which report is true?

I have no doubt that's where the problem was - that's what I meant, anyway, and I hope they take these gougers and put them through hell.

ASSOCCIATED PRESS (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,422183,00.html)
...
Officials were encouraged that the storm surge topped out at only 15 feet — far lower than the catastrophic 20-to-25-foot wall of water forecasters had feared, but major roads were washed out near Galveston, and the damage was still immense.
...
Much confusion was generated because there were different levels of storm surge measured at various points. Thre was a pretty good visual indication of what was happening when TV showed Geraldo Rivera standing at the 17 foot high Galveston sea wall with the waves spaying over the wall, but the sea level still a bit below the top.
The major catasreophe would have been the topping on the sea wall coupled with damage to the Houston Ship channel.

PS Notice how the IKE kept the LA Metrolink train disaster off the lead stories. So far, more dead in that one train wreck than in all of IKE .

Engineer Caused Train Crash, Officials Say (http://news.aol.com/article/train-collision-in-california-kills-18/172531?icid=200100397x1209166026x1200555037)
A local teenager told CBS2-TV that he had exchanged a brief text message with the engineer shortly before the crash. The station reported that the teen, Nick Williams, was among a group of kids who befriended the engineer and asked him questions about his work.
Tyrrell said before the report aired that she would find it "unbelievable" that an engineer would be text messaging while operating a train.

Isn't it funny - the back of the box says the movie I just watched runs 145 minutes. The imdb says 145 minutes, and yet the actual running time of the film is 139 minutes. Somewhere along the line someone got it wrong, and my guess is that some dope at Universal checked the imdb instead of actually looking at the readout on the DVD.

In sad news, I just found out my friend, the brilliant guitarist Jorge Zamorano, has just passed from Stage 4 cancer, which he had managed to fight successfully for several years (!). A sweet man and one of the most incredible guitar virtuosos it's ever been my privilege to play with.
My condolences, JMK, on the loss of your friend.
