Well, you've read the notes, the notes were brassy and tacky, and now it is time for you to post until the brassy and tacky cows come home.

Good morning, all! In a very few minutes I will run up to the lumber store and pick up my two pieces of plywood and bring them back here. After that, I will head down to the Finians on Broadway office and deal with contracts and invoices. I think I will then run over to Local 802 and give the Music Prep dept. the signed contract and copy of invoice.

Then, when I return, I will fix the bookcases and get back to work on FINIAN'S RAINBOW. At some point I need to have a phone conversatin with Jeff Saver who's asked me about working on TIME AFTER TIME, his musical with Stephen Cole.

More overcast skies, but it seems a bit warmer and more humid today which didn't make for a pleasant walking experience this morning. By Friday, temps will be more moderate. But today and tomorrow will be warm

I found more to like with VANTAGE POINT than I did QUANTUM OF SOLACE. That James Bond movie just wore me out within the first half hour. I enjoyed the multiple points of view of VANTAGE POINT, and the cast was great.

And the Blu-rays of both were stupendous.

Today I will tackle "Eclipse series 18: Dusan Makavejev Free Radical," the latest Criterion set which is due to come out October 13th. Since the first two films are not long at all, I will do them today, the first this afternoon and the second in the early evening. I'll finish up the set tomorrow afternoon.

From his two films I've already watched and written about, I have to say I'm not looking forward to these, but since they're his first films, maybe they won't be quite as weird and desperate to make an impression. We'll see. It should be an adventure nonetheless.

Dit-three. If I wanted car chases that obeyed the laws of physics I'd watch CNN.  These films never promised to be more than live action cartoons. Well produced mindless entertainment can be just what's needed on a dreary Friday night.

FINIAN'S RAINBOW......always seemed kind of a meh story to me.  I have only seen the movie and heard the OBC once.

But the songs.....oh the songs!  I have listened to the soundtrack so many times....I love the songs.  I bought the LP for fifty cents and it was years before I saw the movie on late night television.  I had already imagined the choreography in my head.....so I was most disappointed in Mr Pan's work - he indicates EVERYTHING and it's most distressing.  And Silent Susan or whatever her name is seems to be a dumb character....but anyway.  THE SONGS!!!!

I look forward to seeing how DR ELMORE'S new revival fares....and of course of seeing him onstage accepting the Tony Award!

The kitties are feeding well. We just have to wait and see if the medicines work. I believe two of them can see.

Last night two of them were missing from the "Baby Box." I called to them, and one came out from under the Leopard-Spotted Fainting Couch and climbed into my lap. The other (the one we've worked so hard to save) was under the computer desk and wandered around lost.

Is this YOU DR ELMORE?

Yes, DR JRand59, it is. I agree with you about the glorious score, but unlike you, I find the story a wonderful mix of whimsy, blarney, politics, and social criticism. I appreciate your wish for my Tony nomination, but I've only scored about 70 bars of music and the rest of the orchestrations are by two men I feel quite inferior to, Russell Bennett and Don Walker.

I see my favorite recording of the show is now out of print, but the Amazon Marketplace has several copies "used-like new" for a good price. I'm hoping we get a recording.

You'll absolutely get a new recording IF the producers pay for it.  That's the way it works these days, so if they've put the money in the budget, then either Ghostlight or PS Classics will have it.

I should add that another orchestrator in the business who does a lot of revivals gets those jobs by putting down the original orchestrators to the producers and powers-that-be as "generic 40s" or "generic 50s" hack work. I think it's great they give him a chance to do "generic millenium" new ones.

I should add that another orchestrator in the business who does a lot of revivals gets those jobs by putting down the original orchestrators to the producers and powers-that-be as "generic 40s" or "generic 50s" hack work. I think it's great they give him a chance to do "generic millenium" new ones.

LOL.....the lyrics I was thinking of.....I gave you the wrong verse....

it's about

Sweet potatoes....

and the line I don't get is about Freeman's Status or something like that....I can't understand it.

DR Cillaliz, re: DANCING WITH THE STARS.

I don't always decide my favorite in the first week. But i can see who i think i will like.

As i said, for the men, i thought mark (iron chef), louie and aaron carter had potential. And i did think donny osmond was really good.

As for the women last night, there were some very interesting ones. I also thought kelly osbourne did much better than i ever could have expected. Especially after they showed how bad she was initially. I thought her free dance was amazing.

The best to me though were mya and joanna. I thought mya and dimitri's dance was one of the best ever. It was so beautiful. I could not believe len gave them a 5. Even if he did not think it was traditional. He could have given them a 7.

I figured joanna and derek would be good and they were.

Sabrina the teenage witch(melissa joan hart) to me was just okay in her main dance. But i loved her relay.

I thought macy gray was not good at all. Although i wonder if she has a lot of fans. Besides her i thought that kathy ireland was the worst.

I also think natalie coughlin (olympic swimmer) could do well. She seemed a little stiff.

But it seems like the best will be mya, joanna and kelly!

Mr. Handy Man was here and doing the last of the shade job.  Then he tried to help my car, but there is no helping the problem, I guess.  Some of the paint on the roof has, what he says, oxidized, just in two spots but it looks like sandpaper and not very attractive.  Why it only happened in those two spots is anyone's guess - there are no other problems on the entire car.  He used something called a clay bar, which usually works, but didn't because apparently the paint they used has clear coat or something.  If anyone has any clew how to deal with this problem, please let me know.

I see my favorite recording of the show is now out of print, but the Amazon Marketplace has several copies "used-like new" for a good price. I'm hoping we get a recording.

I certainly prefer that version to the original Broadway cast recording, but I really love the soundtrack of the movie. A new recording would be most welcome.

No need to be torn; they don't run in competition with each other. The CBS comedies are 8-9. GLEE runs from 9-10. It's ABC that has 9-10 comedies.

I watched another Brett/Holmes program - SHOSCOMBE OLD PLACE. This has to be the easiest to figure out Sherlock Holmes story of all time. I had never read the story; THE CASE BOOK is the one Holmes volume I've never read, but at least in the filmed version, the mystery's solution was very obvious.

Then I did my work project for this afternoon - Dusan Makavejev's MAN IS NOT A BIRD. Typical mix of drama, comedy, and socialism uneasily combined into a stew of ideas, images, and politics. Certainly not as objectionable as those two 70s movies I had seen earlier, but nothing all that gripping either. For me, this was not the revelation of something like THE 400 BLOWS or KNIFE IN THE WATER were for their directors.

On the other hand, NCIS scored the highest ratings in its seven year history last night. It is VERY unusual for a show to be building on its ratings during its seventh year on the air, but NCIS seems to be doing that.

NCIS: LA benefitted from that huge lead-in audience and delivered more than 90% of its lead-in audience, the best debut so far this (young) season.

As it always is, we've found a couple of typos in the book - unavoidable, it seems, no matter how hard we try and how often we proof.  One is on page 145 - there's a missing show title - Peter Pan.  Somehow, between two of Grant's layouts it got dropped.  And my eye would never have known to catch it - it's infuriating, since it was there in the first galley and gone in the second, and HOW it could just disappear is even a bigger mystery to me, unless we did a fix in that area and it screwed it up.  The other is more minor - on page 153 there's an "or" that should have been an "of" - again, those things are so hard to catch because it's not misspelled and the eye tends to compensate for the wrong letter.

You'll absolutely get a new recording IF the producers pay for it.  That's the way it works these days, so if they've put the money in the budget, then either Ghostlight or PS Classics will have it.

Perhaps a truly stupid question for BK.  Couldn't Kritzerland put in a bid to produce the cast recording of FR?

Tonight another new episode of GLEE which I'm looking forward to. I'm going to sample the ABC sitcoms that come on opposite GLEE: MODERN FAMILY and COUGAR TOWN (though I won't see them until I eat lunch tomorrow).

CBS' schedule is all returning shows with their season premieres tonight.

NBC has the poorly reviewed new show MERCY and LAW & ORDER: SVU on its new night and time.

At 8pm there are actually 3 shows that are quite similar and would appeal to the same audience:

AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, DANCING WITH THE STARS and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.

I will also try EASTWICK at 10pm.

I love DANCING WITH THE STARS.  I would enjoy watching SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.  However, there is no punishment known to mankind or to Guantanamo Bay that could force me to watch AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL.  I see no similarity between MODEL and the other two programs.

Well...this is an interesting tidbit about a (possible) new TV show:

Spielberg, Shaiman, Wittman, Zadan and Meron in Talks for TV Series About a New Musical (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/133134-Spielberg_Shaiman_Wittman_Zadan_and_Meron_in_Talks_for_TV_Series_About_a_New_Musical)

Quote
Variety reports that Tony-winning composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can) are also in negotiations to score the project. A goal would be to stage the musical on Broadway after the series airs. (The stage show at the center of the series is not related to any existing musical.)

The scripted series — it's not a documentary — will trace the process of creating a new musical from conception to songwriting, the alignment of investors, through casting and the rehearsal process. The show would also focus on the personal lives and stories of the individuals involved.

TCB - even though I was the first to come up with this business model of producers paying and the label taking a distribution fee, at the time I handed that proposal in and a budget to the Shubert's for Amour, I was just about to start Kritzerland.  One of the people at the Shubert's knew the owner of Ghostlight, and he handed them my budget and the rest is history.  Only those two labels seem to have the wherewithall to get in there under those terms - it's really annoying, but they go where they're comfortable.

I liked Kelly better than Mya, but i think I may have been harvesting DR Ron's blueberry field on Farmtown when she was dancing

Cool!  So...who the heck are Charlie, Michael and Wally??

They were the original Beatles, but their manager thought they needed an overhaul on the names.  George was obstinant, so he kept his.  Wally became "Ringo"...and Charlie and Michael are John and Paul.

Who are your favorites so far on DWTS?   Who do you think should go home tonight?   I'd say Macy Gray (sorry Macy) and either Tom Delay or the fighting guy, don't remember his name.

My SIL, who spends most of his idle hours taking care if the finish on his vintage Mustang, says that his best guess is that the clear coat has worn off in those spots (the paint finish is naturally dull, it is the clear coat that gives it its shine). If the finish is fairly old and the car has been washed a lot the clear coat will start to wear off - the first signs are usually small spots on the roof or the hood. The solution is to patch up the paint - which will be noticable or to refinish the roof.

The cabaret scene here in NYC is pretty good right now.  Far from what it used to be, but there are some decent options most nights of the week now.  It all depends just how much of a cover charge and food and/or drink minimum that willing to pay.

The Metropolitan Room (http://www.metropolitanroom.com) is my favorite spot right now. Good acts, reasonable cover charges, and the two-drink minimum can be met with soft drinks or even bottled water. *And they serve cakes and pies from The Little Pie Company (http://www.littlepiecompany.com/).

On the higher end of the scale, there's Feinstein's (http://feinsteinsattheregency.com/), and if they feeling like putting down a down-payment on a small apartment, there's always the Café Carlyle (http://www.thecarlyle.com/entertainment.cfm).

For everything else in between, there's:
Don't Tell Mama (http://www.donttellmamanyc.com/)
The Triad (http://www.theduplex.com/index.shtml)
The Triad (http://www.triadnyc.com/)
The Algonquin (http://www.algonquinhotel.com/dining-entertainment)
Birdland (http://www.birdlandjazz.com/)
Etc., etc., etc...

This article from the NY Times may be of interest - but, hopefully, not concern - to some DRs..

Tie to Pets Has Germ Jumping to and Fro (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/22/health/22mrsa.html)

"For decades, the drug-resistant germ called MRSA was almost exclusively a concern of humans, usually in hospitals and other health care settings.

But in recent years, the germ has become a growing problem for veterinarians, with an increasing number of infections turning up in birds, cats, dogs, horses, pigs, rabbits and rodents. And that, infectious-disease experts say, is becoming a hazard to humans who own or spend time with these animals.

“What’s happened for the first time that we’ve noticed is that you’re getting flip back and forth,” said Scott Shaw, head of the infection control committee at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.

It is unknown how often pets play a role in human infections by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and vice versa; physicians and veterinarians do not routinely trace such infections to their source. When such scientific sleuthing is conducted, however — usually in the case of multiple or recurring infections — the results suggest a strong link...."

Car paint will do that.  All it takes is one little "hole" or "crack" in the finish for some water to start to creep in and start eating away at the paint.  If you're that concerned about the appearance, take you car into a dealership or auto-body shop.  And if you haven't had your car washed and detailed regularly, well...

I thought we just might like it & recorded the show.  Keith & I never made it past the runway ;D

I wouldn't recommend it for you or Keith. Actually I don't think you'd care for most of the shows on the CW.

I actually prefer to vote during the show (since by phone you only have 30 minutes after the show to vote). But you can start voting as soon as the show starts.

After i get my favorite i usually call before they dance (the lines aren't busy then).

But for the first two shows i waited till i saw something i liked then voted. And then waited till after the relay and voted for who i liked in that!

It is cute how much your mom likes the show.

Btw, for DR Laura re: DWTS and Donny Osmond.

I would suspect that Donny Osmond is one of the more popular contestants this year. So i don't think he'll need our votes. The votes are partly based on the judges. But a big part is the audience. If a performer is very popular/has a big fanbase then that can keep them around for a long time.

In this case, donny has a big fanbase AND he is a good dancer.

I would guess he will most likely make it at least till final 4.

Well i think ANTM would appeal more towards women (which i think the other two do as well).

Have you ever seen ANTM to dislike it so much? I love it!

Well... I've watched ANTM from time to time, and even I can't tolerate Tyra and Ms. Jay any longer. Thankfully - for the CW - it's a very cheap show to produce, so, ratings or no ratings, they can keep it running for as long as Tyra Banks wants - or threatens - to keep it going.

As for it's target audience, it's geared towards teenage girls and gay men who want to be teenage girls. ;)

DR Jose, my sister's mother in law came back tonight from a cruise she took (she's Filipino). Apparently she went with a big group of her friends (all Filipino). And that a LOT of the crew was Filipino.  They ended up having the chefs make them special Filipino food every night.

I thought that was funny. At first when my brother-in-law mentioned this (her son). I thought he said that the crew asked his mom to make them food. :)

I guess the chefs have learned what the people working on the shop like. I just thought it was nice that they would make a special dish for

Tell Mom to vote for Donny!

can't vote until next week.   She takes notes and then after the show we talk on the phone and I cast our votes online.   I will make sure there's a vote for Donny for you :)

It is cute how much your mom likes the show.

...And the fact that you can vote as soon as the show starts truly shows that DWTS is more a popularity contest than a talent contest - regardless of how the judges votes come into play.

-I wonder what would happen if "American Idol" and "SYTCYD" followed the same format?

Well i might vote for him if i like his dancing.

I agree with you. But in this case there are going to be tons of people voting for him. That is a fact.
On dialidol (they track the voting) he was second for the men (out of 8). He won't need my vote.

When his sister was on, she finished 3rd. And i'm sure he is way more popular than her (and she was not even that great).

I run into the same "favoritism" when I go on the Disney Cruises. I don't ask for any special dishes, but I can tell that the room stewards and dining room staff may "like" me a little more.  -And I tip them accordingly. ;)

When my parents took their Norwegian cruise earlier this year, they too were almost treated like royalty.  They stuck to the set menus in the dining rooms, but were offered some "tastes of home" every now and then.

I wonder what would happen if "American Idol" and "SYTCYD" followed the same format?

I actually can't vote for those two. I wonder why they let canadians vote for DWTS but not for SYTYCD?

The thing that is good about the voting for DWTS is that they limit the amount of times you can vote. So you can't sit there for the full two hours.

I do like the fact that you can vote during the show. But i don't like the fact that you can only vote for 30 minutes after the show. Sometimes i record it and watch it a bit later at night.

I don't think IDOL would ever consider doing the voting this way. Because they want to say they had X million votes. And they would not want people to miss any of the singers. For some reason on DWTS you can easily just press pause or vote during the commercials!

Then I watched tonight's work prokect, the next of those Makavejev films: LOVE AFFAIRS OR THE CASE OF THE MISSING SWITCHBOARD OEPRATOR.

Typical Makavejev nonsense: take a sweet, interesting love story and drop into it a series of off the wall film snippets. Everything from dissecting a human brain to a lecture on rat infestation of Asia and Europe to an ancient silent movie of a bodybuilder and a nude woman posing as Adam and Eve in suggestive sex positions.

After I finished that, I watched the "making of" documentary for THE PIRATE. Then I listened to some of the bonus audio tracks on the disc: Roger Edens singing several of the songs and also Judy's alternate version of "Love of My Life" which makes it a more attractive (if less vocally complex) melody than the version used in the film.

Then I watched tonight's version of GLEE. I really enjoyed the singing and performing. The baby scenario is just WRONG all the way around, but Kurt's scenes with his father were sweet (played by Mike O'Malley who played gay himself for several years on MY NAME IS EARL). And Jane Lynch's TV editorials were hilarious.

Yep, wildly over the top and appears to be the way the show is going to go, but once I've adjusted to that, it's so blame entertaining.

I knew you'd have a compendium - thanks a lot.

Well, MERCY brought nothing new to the table, and what is brought was just so-so.

EASTWICK shows promise

George - did you spot Kyle X/Y in the opening scene of EASTWICK?

Hmmmm...

I just pulled up this list of Useful Hebrew Phrases (http://www.omniglot.com/language/phrases/hebrew.php), and I'm wondering just "why" the last phrase on the list would be "useful"? ;)

I find it useful, Jose.

You use it to lure the Game Warden to a tryst?

Or if a Hungarian was trying to buy a pack of cigarettes... ;)

Here's a parody dealing with, as someone mentioned the other day on another chat board: "with what I've read here about Stamos, it might be difficult to buy a gaggle of teenage girls flipping for Conrad Birdie when this Albert is also standing right there."

Hope you like it if you have time to watch (it's just under two minutes).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT835-V3c4g

Bye bye Conrad
That Albert’s such a dream
Bye bye Conrad
Albert makes us scream

                                    (We loved you Conrad)

No more buying
Those fan club memberships
No more sighing
We want Albert’s lips

John lumbers like a klutz
The man should take ballet
His singing makes us nuts
What note was that – a J?
                (Bye bye Birdie)
Still bye bye Conrad
Call off that one last kiss
Bye bye Conrad
Albert’s who we’ll miss

His singing’s too low-key
His dancing has no line
Still Albert is for me
He’d fill my house just fine

Don’t twitch, Conrad
We’re fans but who’da thunk
We’d ditch Conrad
For an ancient hunk
               (We loved you Conrad)
Albert’s such a hunk
               (We loved you Conrad)
Don’t get in a funk
               (We loved you Conrad)
Albert’s such a hunk.

DID ANYONE SEE THE HD "BROADCAST" OF THE WIZARD OF OZ TONIGHT?
IF SO WHAT DID YOU THINK?

It was great!  All cleaned up and the theater was practically full!  I got there at about 6:20 and there were maybe a couple dozen people in the theater at that time, but by the time it started at 7:00, it was almost full.  Robert Osborne did an introduction and then there was a not-new documentary on the making of the movie, hosted by Angela Lansbury...she was much younger than she is now.  People really enjoyed it.  There was applause at the end.  The picture so clean.  There was only one time that I saw something on the screen (a thread or something at the bottom of the frame for quite a few seconds).

Finally back from the reading of the long musical, which was indeed, as I suspected, long - the creators were mortified, as I knew they would be.  I'll  have a full report in the notes - after, we went to a local coffee shop to wind down, so I'm just home and just starting the notes - when they're posted I'll put up the pre-announcement for the new Kritzerland release.
