Well, you've read the notes, the notes were dancin', and now it is time for you to post until the dancin' cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: INHERE!
-
~~~Super Excellent Vibes, Xylophones and Marimbas for Michelle Nicastro!!~~~
-
Last night, I saw BK's close and personal friend, "Stephen Sondheim and Frank Rich in Conversation" in Seattle! I didn't get an autograph and my question was not answered, and this is the only picture that I was able to get:
(http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff302/HHWgroup/StephenSondheim10-26-09.png)
BUT I LOVED IT!! ;D Also, before the "Conversation," I saw yesterday's Birthday Boy DR Jed and his very lovely wife, DR Ann in the lobby! And I agree with Jed...I wish that they could've gone on for another hour, too!
Thanks, Jane, I did have a wonderful time!
-
Jose, thanks for the story about Terri White. The one time that I went to New York (1995), I recognized her when she was working at 88's and I got her autograph. That was pretty cool. :D
-
Interesting notes today, bk. :)
-
~~~SAFE & EASY TRAVEL VIBES~~~
FOR DR GINNY & DH RICHARD!!!!!
DR Ginny, I think I forgot to mention that the other day I was coming out of our local post office and noticed, for the first time, that a shop across the street sells VERA BRADLEY!!! :D
-
Really enjoyed yesterday's photos from DR TCB and DR Jane!!!!!
-
~~~MOST EXCELLENT RECOVERY VIBES & XYLOPHONES~~~
FOR MICHELLE NICASTRO!!!!!!
-
And now, to bed. Good night, DAW.
-
Sweet Dreams. DR George. And thanks for the SONDHEIM report! :)
-
Well, I guess I'm up - I got up at 4:45 after some really weird dreams, and I tried going back to sleep but couldn't. I think I'll go lay down again in a little while and see what happens - three hours of sleep isn't enough.
-
And I've been up since about 4:30 a.m. Variious things on my mind make it impossible to sleep any longer. Busy week ahead of me still.
It's strange INHERE today.
-
Good morning, all! I have the laundry in the washers, and while it's in the dryers I will mop the bathroom and vacuum the apartment. Around noon, DR Ginny and Richard will show up with their luggage and go to lunch with me and our DR Jose. Then, when I've seen them off to LaGuardia, I will get soem writing on the 2nd volume of BABES IN TOYLAND. I feel it's important we finish this show completely before we proceed with anything else, and we have THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER and OH, BOY! in production and on hold for a bit.
DR Jose, thanks for the article on Terri. I knew none of that and I am so happy for her because she's such a beautiful and wonderful lady. I'm going to the theatre tonight to drop off a couple of CDs for Rob and to make sure I don't miss next Sunday's commitment ceremony. Josh Clayton is playing for it.
DR George, I'm glad you had a great evening with Mr Sondheim. We're not as close as we were when I got him the Pulitzer, but I'm sure he was a very congenial speaker last night.
TOD:
"
-
TOD: The most brilliant dancing I believe I've had the pleasure of seeing on film was in "Broadway Melody of 1940" -- Eleanor Powell and Fred Astaire doing a tap routine (and it's anything BUT "routine") to "Begin the Beguine".
-
Great choices elmore. Small House is a perfect example of exquisite and unique choreography and dancers who realize that choreography uniquely and perfectly. I've seen King and I many times on stage and the ballet is always danced well, but those originals? Never topped. And I'd say the situation with choreography and even dancers in revivals in the last decade (this current crop) is when it's gotten the worst it's ever been. None of these people working today, Mitchell, Ashford, whoever, knows or understands building a number to a frenzy, or crafting something exquisite with specific dancers (the Bolero in Follies, the dance partners in Grand Hotel).
-
Guess I'll try to get some more sleep.
-
Tuesday morning greetings! We are enjoying our last morning in our apartment after Richard decided against going to St. Mary's for morning prayer. He crawled back into bed and said, "Even the dogs are wearing raincoats!"
We are, indeed, going to schlep our luggage to the UWS and have our last NYC meal (this time around, anyway) with DRs Elmore and Jose.
-
Ginny, I'm very glad Anthony was able to escort you and Richard and provide you with a tour of our neighborhood and park. It's very lucky that it was yesterday and not today.
When I left the apartment at 6am for work there was nary a drop but when I went out for coffee at 7:15 it was raining! Everyone is coming into the office with dripping umbrellas.
-
What a wonderful article about Larry's friend Terry!
-
Yes, Ben, if we had to have 2 rainy days during our stay, Saturday and today are the least intrusive on our plans. I wonder if there'll be any flight delays....
-
We appreciate all the travel vibes that came our way last night and earlier this morning.
And, DR DAW, thanks for the tip about the VB shop. You sure don't see many places here in Manhattan that sell it, but you do see quite a bit being carried.
-
DR Jane, you mentioned that you and Keith love THE GOOD WIFE. I've said it before, but I agree. I really did not think i would love this show, since i'm not a huge fan of the star. But it is so enjoyable!
Btw, apparently it is a repeat tonight! :(
-
TOD:
So much to choose from. I will have to give it some deep thought today.
-
TOD:
* * * * * HEALTHY VIBES FOR MICHELLE NICASTRO * * * * *
-
Nice article DR JOSE - thanks for posting the link.
MR BK's notes were most fun to read today. And I couldn't agree more. Maybe some of it is that the dancers in the public eye are not chosen now for their training - or they don't consider it important to have any training.
Watching SYTYCD convinces me that there are trained dancers and wonderful choreographers out there. Matching them up and getting them a platform is not so easy. Locally we have a couple of good dance companies - Dance Kaleidoscope being the best one - but also some very BAD dancing going on as well. And I am not sure about the theatre choreography because - well - is it the lack of imagination of the choreographers OR the lack basic skills training for the dancers? And so many local theatres use Dance Teachers as choreographers, so the numbers look more like Aunt Ludie's dance recital than anything that belongs to whatever show it is stuck into.
-
No don't send another, MR BK. It will eventually get here I am sure....eventually.
-
DR MattH, i saw SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE and liked it but did not love it. But i also saw MILK, THE READER, BENJAMIN BUTTON and FROST/NIXON, and like them all but i wouldn't say i truly loved any of them. Although i probably thought THE READER and FROST/NIXON were my favorites of the group.
-
-
Did anybody else watch last night's SYTYCD special episode? They wanted to introduce the top 20 since sometimes we do not know half the people.
It wasn't what i was expecting. I thought that they would show more of the vegas stuff. So we could see the people.
Although what they did was quite special. They separated people into their genre (contemporary, ballroom, hip-hop, tap...) and then they had the pros choreograph them in groups.
I must say i loved this idea! That first hip-hop routine, and the last ballroom were spectacular.
Although too bad one of the contemporary boys had to withdraw (billy bell).
-
TOD:
I can only speak for film because I haven't seen any of the greats onstage - but I may think of something as the day goes on:
7 BRIDES FOR 7 BROTHERS - the Challenge Dance followed by the Barn Raising. Two separate sequences although they follow one another in the movie.
Fred & Ginger - "Pick Yourself Up."
WEST SIDE STORY - The Dance at the Gym, among other sequences
HAND JIVE - the National Bandstand number from GREASE
MARY POPPINS - another vote for "Step in Time"
-
TOD
Another performer who blew me away the two times I saw her--Lenora Nemetz. She wowed me as a Velma replacement in the original CHICAGO and then later in WORKING.
-
Good morning!
It was misting a little bit on my walk this morning, but it was otherwise very pleasant (temp - 50), and I enjoyed it. High of 60 today with rain supposedly on its way this afternoon.
-
No don't send another, MR BK. It will eventually get here I am sure....eventually.
Yes, you have no BANANAS.
You have no BANANAS today.
Well, someone had to say it...
-
TOD:
I've seen so much sensational dancing on Broadway and in road tours.
The standouts for me:
Gwen and Chita doing the "Hot Honey Rag" in CHICAGO
Gene Nelson in FOLLIES' "The Right Girl"
Donna McKechnie in A CHORUS LINE's "The Music and the Mirror"
Michael Berresse doing "Bianca" in KISS ME KATE (which the video of bastardizes terribly).
And those ensembles!
A CHORUS LINE
GRAND HOTEL
KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN
FOLLIES
DREAMGIRLS
SHENANDOAH
-
In the movies, I don't think anything touches Astaire or Kelly's solo numbers in many musicals. Their styles are totally different and not comparable to one another; each is genius in his own right.
Nothing matches the "Barn Raisin'" square dance-off in SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS.
I also love the trash can lid dance in IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER (and that entire number).
-
Yes DR JENNIFER - Billy leaving the show is a bummer, and not really knowing the reason why is even more mysterious, although he didn't look like the healthiest person ever.....his look reminds me of my nephew who has Cystic Fibrosis, but who knows?
They brought an another contemporary dancer who is good, but he ain't no Billy.
http://www.tv.com/billy-bell-leaves-so-you-think-you-can-dance-due-to-illness/webnews/2717.html
-
Good Morning-- I shall dance through the day today.
-
Unless ICE AGE 3 arrive today, I'll go ahead and do WINGS OF DESIRE on Blu-ray. I'll rewatch the entire movie, but I can zip through the bonuses just to ascertain the resolutions of the featurettes. (Usually Criterion does them in 1080i but not always).
-
Rainy day, travel, health, pain free, good day at work vibes to all.
-
Yes, the CBS slate tonight is all reruns. Ratings sweeps are coming up, so some networks are holding off new episodes this week until sweeps begins.
IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN is repeated tonight. SInce nothing else is on, I may record the HD broadcast and watch it. The DVD looks perfectly wonderful upconverted, so I'll see what I want to do when the time comes.
-
TOD - "Shall We Dance" gets me every time - on stage, on screen, on audio recording. I think it's a very romantic, even sexy, number. And I love "All I Need is the Girl" from Gypsy, too.
And how could I NOT mention "Marian the Librarian"?
-
I want the outfit that the winner wore in this clip.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DEZy5ZEQTU
-
Hmmm...I think the last time I was in any way really wowed by a dance number on Broadway was "The Girl in the Yellow Dance" segment in CONTACT.
I think it varies as to the reasons why there has been no stand-out dancers recently. Directors and choreographers are probably leery of investing too much time into performers who may or may not stay too long with a show. Conversely, I'm willing to bet that some producers would rather have the show be the star and that they direct their creative team to keep the set pieces at cookie-cutter level so that any able body could perform the numbers. Not an inspiring scenario either way...
-
Ugh....now I am stuck at YouTube watching PIPPIN misfires.
-
Woke up to a loooonggg yet fascinating email from Rex Lawson, the world's leading Pianola player, whose work is featured on the new Grieg piano roll Blu-ray I just reviewed. My first reaction was, of course, "Nyah, nyah, TCB, someone read my review!" ;)
-
How could I forget Paul Wallace in GYPSY. A genuine heartthrob of mine after I first saw the movie and a number I adore.
In fact, I loved it so much that I wrote CBS a SCATHING letter when the movie was first shown on the CBS THURSDAY/FRIDAY movie (split over two nights). They cut that number (along with "Little Lamb" as I recall), and I was livid.
I got a nice note back apologizing for their needing to cut the film to fit in commercials even with the movie being spread over two nights (a four hour time slot, and they didn't have enough time to show the whole thing!)
In my letter, I expressed my dread of what they were going to do to SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS which was also scheduled to be shown on the network that season. I was assured that they would not be cutting any numbers from the film when they showed it. They were true to their promise: the film had all of its numbers.
I was mad about GYPSY for several reasons. (1) I have loved the movie from the first time I ever saw it. For me it remains among my two or three favorite movie musicals. (2) I cut my Friday classes in college that year so I could drive home and see it in color. (I left school after classes on Thursday. Up until then I NEVER cut classes even though as a dean's list student, I had unlimited cuts.) My dorm only had a black and white TV in the rec room, and I had a B&W portable in my dorm room; I wanted to see GYPSY in color like I had seen it at the movies.
-
Guess I'll head down now and watch a PERRY MASON episode while thinking about what's for lunch. Of course, I'll be watching CASTLE while I eat. Then, I'll start on my work project today, whatever it may be depending on the mail/UPS delivery.
I never understood the wisdom of cutting the musical numbers out of a musical.
-
TOD: "The Waiter's Galop" from the movie of "Hello, Dolly!" ain't nothin' to sneeze at. It's incredible.
From: "The Barkleys of Broadway": The sheer elegance of Astaire and Rogers dancing to "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and the amazing energy of "The Swing Trot" (done under the opening credits....and featured in full in "That's Entertainment III", IIRC).
"Pass That Peace Pipe" from "Good News"
Scientology seems to be having some bad days. Travolta may be leaving, Anne Archer's son stormed out of a Martin Bashir interview when Bashir dared to ask him about Xenu and volcanoes, and now Paul Haggis has left due to the "church"'s stand on gay marriage. Somewhere Frances Farmer is laughing manically and downing a heavenly vodka tonic. ;)
-
I was kind of hoping his son's death would get Travolta out of the church - we shall see. Would hate to see him end up a casualty.
DR JMK - the church was also fined $900,000 in a French court for duping followers.
I'm up. I got another four hours so I should be fine. One little dream I had within the four hours was that someone bought me some raisinettes. Apparently the kind we used to have as kids - huge ungainly things and, of course, nothing like we had as kids. Go know.
Not sure about the jog, but maybe - I do have a lot of packages to do today.
I wonder how much longer I will be able to continue biking outdoors. For sure once the snow starts. I don't mind it if it's cool out. But i don't like driving in wind.
Today wasn't bad although it felt cold. I think it was 9C (which is high 40s). yesterday it was 6C but not windy at all, so it actually felt warmer.
The best thing i got this year were earmuffs at the dollar store. They go behind your head so they don't interfere with the bike helmut!
I guess DR JENNIFER has named her bicycle Helmut.....must be a German model.
DR Ginny and Richard are in a taxi and off to La Guardia. they arrived with lots of luggage around at a little after noon. DR Jose arrived ahortly thereafter and we all went to Artie's for a tasty lunch. It was wonderful to see them, and they both got a peek at my apartment for the first time. DR Ginny asked about the MBarnum memorial fire escape.
After lunch, we stopped in Holy Trinity Church so Richard could check out the interior and I lit a candle for Michelle Nicastro. Then they and DR Jose loaded up their luggage and we went down to the street to find a taxi. We succeeded. They are on their way to LaGuardia and Jose is off to other places and good times.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Safe Travel Vibes to DR Ginny and Richard! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TOD:
The opening number from WEST SIDE STORY
Shipoopi and Marian the Librarian from THE MUSIC MAN
Fred Astaire's Audition Dance from YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER
Sonny Lamont's tap number atop the piano in TO BEAT THE BAND
pretty much anything by The Nicholas Brothers
and I love the choreography/direction of Randy Newman's Life Has Been Good To Me , 3rd Rock from the Sun
I'm also a fan of M.C. Hammer...
I never understood the wisdom of cutting the musical numbers out of a musical.
I vaguely remember reading something about the worst editing of a movie in the Guiness Book of World Records. It could've been just a suggestion for the book...or maybe it's an urban myth. Anyway, a theater is some Asian country (I forget which) was showing the movie, "The Sound of Music" and they cut ALL the songs! I don't know if it's true, but that's what I remember reading.
I have been looking at the souvenir book from PROMISES PROMISES in NYC. Was Edward Winter really that devastatingly handsome in person?
He's certainly a knockout on TV.
-
Although I had stated I was dropping the show, I had some free time this morning, so I watched SUnday's episode of THREE RIVERS on HD On Demand, and it was very moving. Glad I watched it. Don't know how much longer the show is going to run, but I guess I'll continue to watch it On Demand as long as CBS puts it there.
-
Topic of the Day: every year at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, they have their big fund raiser called CenterFest. They used to bring in a big name (Bernadette Peters, Wynonna Judd, The Pointer Sisters, etc.), but they found that the big names cost more than what they make, so for the last couple of years, they've only had a big party for the monied people (and it'll probably stay that way). One year, they brought in Gregory Hines. He was fantastic! He sang and danced with a band behind him. The energy that he had was incredible! And then brought up tappers from the audience and worked with them. It was wonderful. He put on one of the best shows that I had seen there.
But then he died later that same year of liver cancer (according to IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002138/)). Who knew that he would die so shortly after being able to put on that kind of show. :-\
I meant to mention yesterday that the premiere of WHITE COLLAR last Friday got sensational ratings. I'll be curious to see how much of the audience sticks around for the next episode.
-
Looking at the information in said program.....I did not know that writer Sidney Sheldon was married to actress Jurja Curtwright who was so good in small roles in both GOOD MORNING MISS DOVE and LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING.....
-
I really enjoyed CASTLE which I watched while I ate lunch. Once we got all the suspects and identified the victim as being who he was, I figured out the murderer, but it was late in the show.
-
Page Four Dance!!!
-
Then I watched the Blu-ray version of WINGS OF DESIRE. (That's right; the Fox Blu-ray of ICE AGE 3 did not arrive.)
The color portions looked very nice and solid, but after all that stunning black and white cinematography, it was hard for color to compete with that. It looked and sounded very nice in HD.
-
Then I watched today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Heartbreaking stuff with Fish and Kyle. How my heart broke for poor Oliver!
-
I skimmed through today's ATWT, but there was nothing of interest and nothing in the previews for tomorrow either.
-
Since there is nothing on TV for me tonight (with NCIS being a rerun), I plan to watch GREAT PUMPKIN on DVD upconverted, and then I'm going to watch A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE on Blu-ray which I just got today. Amazon recently reduced it, so I snapped it up. It's one of my favorite movies of the past few years.
Another performer who blew me away the two times I saw her--Lenora Nemetz. She wowed me as a Velma replacement in the original CHICAGO and then later in WORKING.
Since I had more or less ingrained the OCR of Working in my brain throughout high school, I still remember the true thrill I had the first time I played an audition for her here in NYC. -And her Mazeppa in the LuPone Gypsy was a wonder to behold. -And I wish I had had the opportunity to see her go on for Ms. LuPone as Mama Rose.
Then they and DR Jose loaded up their luggage and we went down to the street to find a taxi. We succeeded. They are on their way to LaGuardia and Jose is off to other places and good times.
Actually, as I crossed the street, I could hear some organ music, so I stepped back into Holy Trinity for a couple of minutes and listened to the organist practice. Good organist! -And, then, since the rain had picked up again, I went ahead and headed back to my apartment. It's a good day to stay inside and clean and organize around the apartment.
Or surf the net and watch TV.
Well...
I just checked the flight status for their "new" flight, and, apparently, that one is now delayed. I guess the weather between here and Dayton is causing the delay, as it seems that other flights are taking off from LaGuardia right now.
Guess I'll hop off-line now and work on the BD review of WINGS OF DESIRE. Then, it's back downstairs for some leisure viewing.
-
edisaurus will be happy to know that the Nicholas Brothers are in the long musical, along with Sophie Tucker.
-
Speaking of the long musical, I have spent way too many hours dealing with the creative team's emergencies and problems - it just never ends because no one on the team is ever on the same page. As for me, if they want or demand something be in the show they know my deal - they have to explain the logic of it, and if I buy the logic then we can talk about keeping whatever it is - if they can't, they have to figure something else out. It's amazing how many times they cannot explain the logic.
-
I also had a huge number of packages to pack up and I've done nothing but that and telephonic calls all day and I'm overtired and I may have to go to Grant's to finally mix the new stuff for the demo (and re-record one track whose music has changed) - I'm actually hoping that can be tomorrow night or another night this week because I'm just exhausted.
-
I must now affix postage to the packages. And then it's a work session.
-
Greetings from LGA! Yes, we had a delightful lunch/visit with DRs Elmore and Jose and a zippy taxi ride out here to the airport. Our 4:30pm flight to Dayton was cancelled and we're now booked on the 6:30, which may or may not be delayed until 7pm.
Richard paid for internet access and is letting me use his computer while he takes a walk.
I'm going into midtown to FINIAN'S RAINBOW. I'll pick up my signed CD from Kate Baldwin, give a CD to Rob Berman, see Terri about Sunday's ceremony, and ask Kathy, the company manager, about opening night tickets. I'll stay to watch the opening scene and see what the scenery now looks like, and head back home.
-
I think I shall watch a movie on DVD. And I am not sure I want to start investing the time it will take to go through a season of SYTYCD without Billy Bell in the competition and no Mia Michaels routines to look forward to....although I do like Mandy Moore as well.
And Loudmouth Tyce D'Orio being on EVERY week is not plus for me either.
(http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff302/HHWgroup/StephenSondheim10-26-09.png)
BUT I LOVED IT!! ;D Also, before the "Conversation," I saw yesterday's Birthday Boy DR Jed and his very lovely wife, DR Ann in the lobby! And I agree with Jed...I wish that they could've gone on for another hour, too!
Thanks, Jane, I did have a wonderful time!
George, is Mr. Sondheim urinating in the corner of the stage?
Why don't you write him and ask him, and see if he answers. ;)
TOD: The first show I ever saw on Broadway was the OBC of Pippin. Magic to Do was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on any stage, anywhere, maybe THE most amazing thing.
I wonder how much longer I will be able to continue biking outdoors. For sure once the snow starts. I don't mind it if it's cool out. But i don't like driving in wind.
Today wasn't bad although it felt cold. I think it was 9C (which is high 40s). yesterday it was 6C but not windy at all, so it actually felt warmer.
The best thing i got this year were earmuffs at the dollar store. They go behind your head so they don't interfere with the bike helmut!
We have snow on the mountains. I hope it stays there. It did rain a little and hail a little during our hike today. It wasn't windy so I was comfortable.
Those ear muffs were a great investment, and at only a dollar I'm impressed.
BK, are you at liberty to say what Michelle's surgery is for? Cancer? aneurysm?
-
TOD:
So much to choose from. I will have to give it some deep thought today.
This is rather frightening!
Brain surgery, and after surgery vibes for Michelle!!
Did anybody else watch last night's SYTYCD special episode? They wanted to introduce the top 20 since sometimes we do not know half the people.
It wasn't what i was expecting. I thought that they would show more of the vegas stuff. So we could see the people.
Although what they did was quite special. They separated people into their genre (contemporary, ballroom, hip-hop, tap...) and then they had the pros choreograph them in groups.
I must say i loved this idea! That first hip-hop routine, and the last ballroom were spectacular.
Although too bad one of the contemporary boys had to withdraw (billy bell).
One of the contemporary boys is suffering from billy bell?
Woke up to a loooonggg yet fascinating email from Rex Lawson, the world's leading Pianola player, whose work is featured on the new Grieg piano roll Blu-ray I just reviewed. My first reaction was, of course, "Nyah, nyah, TCB, someone read my review!" ;)
I'll wager Rex doesn't have much else to do.
I have scrapbooking pages laying out all over the dining room table.
I have not done any scrapbooking in a couple of months. So i have pics from july, and august to do (i have not yet printed out my sept/oct pics).
I have 7 layouts (pictures and paper) with ribbons. I just need some ideas. That is usually why it takes me so long. I don't normally do a page until i know exactly what i am doing.
But this time i decided to organize the pictures and paper and do all the layouts at the same time. I finished one. And have 3 others partially complete.
Continuing health vibes for the very dear Michelle Nicastro.
Speaking of Lenora Nemetz. . . .I once duetted on CITY OF ANGEL's "You're Nothing Without Me," impromptu, with Lenora at a party given by CMU and CLO mIni-stars vocal coach Roseanna Irwin. It was a treat.
Topic of the Day: every year at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, they have their big fund raiser called CenterFest. They used to bring in a big name (Bernadette Peters, Wynonna Judd, The Pointer Sisters, etc.), but they found that the big names cost more than what they make, so for the last couple of years, they've only had a big party for the monied people (and it'll probably stay that way). One year, they brought in Gregory Hines. He was fantastic! He sang and danced with a band behind him. The energy that he had was incredible! And then brought up tappers from the audience and worked with them. It was wonderful. He put on one of the best shows that I had seen there.
But then he died later that same year of liver cancer (according to IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002138/)). Who knew that he would die so shortly after being able to put on that kind of show. :-\
It might have been a result of visiting Olympia.
Some potential babbling coming up... Just warning you...
-
As for the Topic of the Day... Sort of...
No one will ever dance like Gene Castle. No one will ever dance like Donna McKechnie. No one will ever dance like Wayne Cilento... No one will ever dance like (fill in the blank)... -It's just not physically possible. -This is particularly true of Donna McKechnie in regards to "Turkey Lurkey Time" and "Music and the Mirror". Those dances were choreographed for her, on her. Any time I had to play a rehearsal for a new "Cassie", I never envied the young women who had to re-create a set of steps and body vocabulary that were not made for them specifically. Yes, some very minor adjustments were made from time to time, but since they were part of the revival - a recreation - they had to do the steps. In a sense, it was a no-win situation. If the choreography had been changed and adapted to the new Cassie, the new dancer, then there would have most certainly been cries of "blasphemy" from the, for lack of a better word right now, traditionalists. But even when some of the new Cassie's nailed the choreography, it still never looked nor "felt" the same as it did when Donna McKechnie did it.
I guess I should point out that Michael Bennett did change things for certain dancers if he recognized that certain things just did not "fit"right. I know a few dancers from the last company of A Chorus Line that Mr. Bennett supervised, and they all mentioned that "Michael" had wanted to re-choreograph more than a couple of chunks of the show in order to customize it to the strengths of that company. Alas, since the choreography of A Chorus Line attained iconic status in a relatively short amount of time, he had to "re-stage" and "re-create" rather than "refresh".
*And since I've been fortunate to have worked alongside Baayork Lee and have a peek into her "bible", I've seen some of the other "options" that Michael Bennett came up with for not only "Music and the Mirror", but also "I Can Do That" (there are at least three "official" versions) and some of the ensemble sections in the Montages.
There are some wonderful dancers and choreographers out there right now. As to whether their work is making it to the Broadway stage, well... Yes, Broadway shows still have dancing, however, I don't think anyone is writing or producing a "Dance Show". Even when a new show features dance, it's all kept in balance with the other elements of acting and singing. -Or you get purely choreographic pieces like Contact and Movin' Out. -Heck, even Cats was basically a dance piece.
I loved the dancing in In the Heights. It was never really flashy or attention-getting, but it wasn't meant to function that way in the show. The Drowsy Chaperone had some wonderful choreographic moments, but did I leave the theatre thinking about the dancing? No. I left the theatre thinking what a great show I had just seen (in general).
In the world of ballet there seems to be an automatic given that the same choreography will look different from one ballerina to the next. Choreographers and the audience(!) know that no two dancers bodies are alike, so, of course, the resulting choreography will look different. Different arms, different legs, extensions, lifts, suppleness. Comparisons are inevitably made in regards to how the original ballerina danced the part, but there seems to be less of a sense of "the original was the right one".
As for the Topic of the Day... Sort of... Part Deux...
I have seen dancers who LOVE to dance on stage. (And more often in the audition and rehearsal room.) I do think, however, that since there are less shows being produced nowadays, there are less opportunities for "jazz dancers", "Fosse dancers", "modern dancers", "Bennett dancers", etc. to remain gainfully and consistently employed. In today's "biz", dancers have to be extremely well-rounded and multi-"styled"... No one can afford to specialize in just one particular style right now. Everyone has to be very good at everything: jazz, modern, ballet and tap (at least). -And that's what the college and university musical theatre programs seem to stress now too.
*Even A Chorus Line only features ballet and tap in 16-bar combinations, each of which are repeated a number of times in a row. -Baayork Lee - as she will freely admit - still can't teach the tap dance section properly. She never was, and still isn't a tapper.
Is all of that "well-roundedness" contributing a sense of the generic to today's dancers and choreography?
Discuss.
;)
Greetings from LGA! Yes, we had a delightful lunch/visit with DRs Elmore and Jose and a zippy taxi ride out here to the airport. Our 4:30pm flight to Dayton was cancelled and we're now booked on the 6:30, which may or may not be delayed until 7pm.
Richard paid for internet access and is letting me use his computer while he takes a walk.
And it looks like their 6:30 flight took was only delayed by 10 minutes. :)
Thanks, Julie! But most fortunately, both Sondheim and Frank Rich were facing the audience when they were actually speaking. ;) The two chairs were set up on the stage and the people that I was sitting next to and I (we were on the far right of the audience) were hoping that Sondheim sat in the chair on the left of the stage so that he would face us and he did! If he had sat where Frank Rich sat, we would only have been able to see the left side of his face. That would not have been good. But the weird this is is that when I bought my ticket, I thought that I had chosen a ticket on the left side of the audience, but what I got was on the right side. Nice! :D
I agree completely with what you are saying, DR JoseSPiano, about contemporary dancers. And they not only have to be able to do all of the various styles of dance well, but they are also expected to act and sing with equal proficiency.
I just had a big mug of Betty Boop Pink Hot Chocolate. It was pink in color but didn't taste like chocolate
-
But after eating ALL the individually wrapped Tootsie Rolls that I had for the trick or treaters, I didn't really NEED more chocolate
-
DR JOSE I agree also with what you are saying. Now of course everyone has to do everything....singers who dance and dancers who sing and dancers & singers who act....economics, I guess.
I can only say - as I have probably said before - I have danced since I was three years old....a very long time. I have studied all of the disciplines, most particularly tap and jazz (modern) - but also ballet....and certainly picked up swing and ball room along the way. My degree is in dance and Physical Education. ;D
I love to dance. I have been doing it, teaching it, performing it.....I turned to choreography in my 30's, because that's just the facts of dancing life. Sure I still perform, sure I still do a part now and then, sure I still keep up with what's happening.....am I in shape? No. And it's terrible. Being in the studio regularly and seeing yourself in those full length mirrors 8 hours a day keeps you very body conscious.
Now at age 59, I have probably danced my last show....and maybe even choreographed it.....but when some really good music plays....I can't stay in my seat. I can still partner.....and heck....maybe I WILL see if I can choreograph a show this year....I have ideas for HELLO DOLLY! that I haven't used!
-
Older actors can still get roles....older dancers, not so much.
-
I have ideas for HELLO DOLLY! that I haven't used!
Had a delightful evening of viewing. I began with IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN which I watched from my own DVD collection rather than waiting for the network version. Yep, this old transfer (I've read the new Warners transfers are much better) is a trifle frayed around the edges, but it's still very nice looking and very entertaining.
-
Yikes!
Just saw a news reports of a cable that snapped and hit several cars on San Francisco's Bay Bridge. The CHP is now in the process of shutting down the bridge.
-
I also watched YOU'RE NOT ELECTED, CHARLIE BROWN which is also on the GREAT PUMPKIN disc. (It was also shown tonight on ABC). Might not on the surface seem to have anything to do with Halloween, but Linus is running for class president, and during his campaign, he happens to mention his devotion to the Great Pumpkin which almost costs him the election.
This was made in 1972, so it's not the classic that those 60s Peanuts cartoons are. Still, it had a few entertaining moments.
-
I then watched A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE on Blu-ray. It was a nice step up in quality from the DVD I've been watching for the last few years. Really loved seeing it again in such good quality.
-
Next I watched another PERRY MASON episode. I guess I've read too many Agatha Christie mysteries because I spotted the murderer and his accomplice at the time the murder was taking place.
-
I ended my evening watching numbers from HELLO, DOLLY! I watched "Put on Your Sunday Clothes," "The Waiters' Gallop," "Hello, Dolly!" and "So Long, Dearie."
-
Found out I'm going to be reviewing the Disney Treasures/ZORRO sets. They're being mailed tomorrow. Can't wait to see these, but it's going to be A LOT of viewing.
We're HOME!!!
Our flight took off at 7:10 with only about a dozen people on it. We figured that both the 4:30 and 6:30 were undersold and they decided that the weather provided a plausible excuse to cancel the earlier one. One half-full plane flying from New York to Dayton is more economical than 2 quarter-full ones.
On the Wisconsin front - Adam's temp is now normal. Sundee is coughing but otherwise feeling ok and Gabe has a temp. It got to 102 today but with tylenol and a cool bath (he didn't like that) it went back down.
-
I actually think I'm going to start winding down and getting ready for bed myself. I've been dealing with an "itchy" throat and ears today, and that's usually a sign that I'm dealing with allergies and/or possible sinus infection. And I've found the best way to combat either condition is to get plenty of sleep and rest. So...
Goodnight.
-
Night Jose. Lots of rest and water got rid of the sore throat I had last night
-
Hate to admit this, but I might be coming down with something. I'm hoping the scratchy throat and bronchial congestion are just residual effects of being in a home last evening with 2 lovely cats (and their people, of course).
We shall see.
I think Jose you have completely misinterpreted what I wrote today. I didn't say anyone should dance LIKE Donna or Gene Castle. Didn't imply it. Didn't infer it. I said that dancers today don't have the JOY those people had, the sheer LOVE (at least that comes across the footlights) and I haven't seen in any ensemble of dancers one that seemed unique, that had that undeniable sparkle and amazing thing that happens - and I'd say that's the case for 90% of what I've seen in the last two decades. I don't necessarily blame the dancers, the choreographers on B'way simply don't understand what the old boys and gals did, that dance is not just great steps or even not great steps - it comes from another place. They just don't. There are a couple who do interesting things occasionally, but that's the exception these days, not the rule. I really didn't think my point could have been clearer and I just want to make sure that your post doesn't make it seem like I was saying what you were saying I was saying which I wasn't saying.
Gene Castle saw the piece and loved it and agreed with every word of it and for all the reasons you'd think he would. And his wife, the wonderful Jane Actman apparently immediately put it on Facebook. Reread the notes, I think you'll see what I mean this time around :)
Well, I have thought long and hard, and hard and long about today's TOD. So many good dancers...Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Ann Miller, Donld O'Conner, et al, and so many great dance numbers in movies throughout the decades...still, I have to admit that this is one of my favorite, if not my most favorite, choreographed number in a motion picture:
Great videos today. Thanks.
I watched a somewhat weird movie tonight, Less Than Zero, with Robert Downey Jr.
Did people really dress like that in the 80's. I never had big hair, shoulder pads yes, but never pink and brown as the color of choice for interior spaces, and I don't even know what to say about the art work. Well I did say I like weird movies.
Really windy outside. The air is really brown and grey where I work, all the ash being blown about from last month's fire in the foothills.
Goodnight.
Finished with my viewing - the latest Woody Allen film, Whatever Works. In this case, despite two laughs, whatever did not work.
