Well, you've read the notes, the notes procrastinated, and now it is time for you to post until the procrastinating cows come home.

What about a Kritzerland release of "Woman of the Year"? You brought it out on CD before. Sometimes a day goes by, when I don't think of certain songs ...

Well, I head back home today.

I shall have a little breakfast, and then head to the pool to do my morning laps.
Then back for packing and heading to the airport.
It's been a great stay.

I've always thought that THE TALL TARGET is a first-rate thriller.

How much of it is fact and how much is fiction, I don't know.  However, it is based on some actual events.

Good morning, all! I have a day to myself but most of it will be spent on the BABES IN TOYLAND report, which for reasons I'm not able to explain, may not be the final draft I actually submitted. I am not amused. I also have a trek to the Lincoln Center NYPL around noon to verify one footnote from The Chicago Tribune, March1904.

BK, Pasolini's obsession with Rome's ragazzi and his politics were major contributions to his violent death, but I can think of many artists - straight and gay - who put their obsessions into their art, so whenever he had a chance to include nude young men and women in his films, he took advantage of it. Were Andy Warhol, Paul Morrissey, and the young John Waters -  who seem to be the American equivalents of Pasolini in style and content, and criticism of the Catholic Church - so much different? They too got funding for their amateurish art as film makers. Pasolini's film THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST MATTHEW is quite beautiful, and one in which the amateurish performances of its nonprofessional actors adds to the film's simplicity. I also like his film of MEDEA with Maria Callas, although I rememberr thinking at one point, enough of the philosophy and politics; get to the story. When I first got to New York, the old Thalia at 96th and Broadway, where I first saw THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL, showed Pasolini's films regularly, and I got to see many of them. Some I enjoyed more than others. I also find Pasolini and Derek Jarman similar but I prefer Pasolini. Maybe the subtitles add to itheir charm?

DR Matt H, I cannot confirm it on AfterElton, but I think Kyle and Fish are on ONE LIFE TO LIVE today. I thought I had read it a couple of days ago. They've got to set up the romantic triangle and have a bit of violence.

All right. I've got things to do. First, some oatmeal.

And the word of the day is: ACNESTIS!

And The Song Of The Day Is:  IT NEVER ENTERED MY MIND

Life is not complete alone
The man who came to dinner lets me eat alone
I confess it, I didn't guess it:
That I would sit and mope again
And all the while I'd hope again to see my darling dope again
It never entered my mind

The verse "I don't care if there's powder on my nose" always reminds me of the verse to "Jeepers Creeper"'s
"I don't care what the weatherman says . . ."

I've had no UPS deliveries (I actually wasn't expecting anything more this week), so it looks like another day off for me.

I plan to rewatch A VERY SUNNY CHRISTMAS when I go back down in the minute, and I still have plans to watch GLADIATOR on Blu-ray this afternoon. Tonight, I will likely watch a James Bond film. I may choose one on Blu-ray or pick on that hasn't been ported over to the format yet.

I was very disappointed that TNT has canceled RAISING THE BAR. The show was finding itself in its second season, the characters were becoming more interesting, and the pacing was better. I still think the show tried to cram too much into each episode: two cases which often were underdeveloped plus all the melodrama playing out between characters who were sleeping with each other or breaking up and still having to work together. A shame.

Now TNT has only THE CLOSER and LEVERAGE as regular attractions for me. SOUTHLAND will get to play the six new episodes that have been produced, but TNT is going to rerun the first seven that premiered on NBC first, and I'm afraid they won't draw a great audience because they're reruns, and then TNT will lose interest in the show and not produce any more episodes of it.

You've missed a raft of beautifully performed numbers (including last week's "True Colors"), but I can't think of any plot developments that have been earthshaking over the last couple of weeks. What conflicts were in the episodes were resolved by the end with the status quo resumed. I guess the biggest change at this point is that Quinn's parents, upon learning that she's pregnant, kicked her out, and she's now living with Finn and his mother.

I hadn't read about a potential MR. MAGOO Blu-ray, so I'll follow that information with interest to see if it goes anywhere. For a lot of my friends, it's their favorite Christmas-themed entertainment show and on Blu-ray might cause them to break down and buy a player.

OK...

Andrea Bocelli is now on "The View" - with David Foster, of course.

The "set" is comprised of blue and green 'running lights' (I forget what they'r really called). -Even the grand piano is lined with them.  It actually looks like Mr. Bocelli might have "decorated" the set himself.  ::)

But, seriously, it's just an ugly set!

*And David Foster is playing piano(?)... Along with an orchestral track... With backing vocals and chorus... ???

For the sheer camp of it, the Snow White opening number with Rob Lowe was amazing to watch.  And in the 1954 telecast I watched yesterday, which I forgot to write about in the notes, there is some absolutely hilarious tomfoolery between Bob Hope and Humphrey Bogart - brilliantly funny.

Maybe I'll try to see some of the earlier films, and maybe having endured the disgusting, reprehensible Salo (not all of it - I shut it off) just put me off Pasolini forever, but I keep trying to find the art.  I never found Waters, who, while subversive, was always amusing and campy, in the same class as Pasolini.  I don't know that I've seen a Derek Jarman film.

Oh, yes, I am remiss.

But I am not recalcitrant.  Oh! No!  I am not recalcitrant.

The same things apply today that were applicable yesterday.

There are things I must say.  Things that must be said.

But these are not things to be said here because they don't apply to anyone here.

In fact, no one here would be interested in the least.

But I am "dealing" with these things, and I am keeping my mouth shut for the nonce.

Oh yes, for once for the nonce.

The idiots who are in charge of the Lincoln Center NYPL have completely screwed up the research area; they've moved the card catalogues for the Theatre Collection to the 2nd floor, but the catalogues are not close to tables so you have to cart the drawers some distance to use them and then cart them back and take the filled-out card slips to a librarian before you can then take the completed slip via elevator to the third floor to get your request filled. The Music Collection catalogues are still on the third floor so you have to get the information there and then take your filled-out call slip to the 2nd floor to be approved before you can take it back to the third floor to be delivered to you.

Now, of you get the wrong materials, you have to leave the third floor, go back to the second and check the card catalogues again, fill out new call slips, see the librarian and return to the third floor. What asshole thinks this is remotely efficient? Why is it they get a workable system and some idiot in charge who neither uses the collection or clearly knows anything about how the system works efficiently is allowed to screw it up?

Yep! Kyle and Fish are on today.

I'm not sure how many fans of THE AMAZING RACE also watch BIG BROTHER.

But it looks like Jeff and Jordan (who are really a couple) are filming the next installment of TAR:

Seeing as how I loveed Jeff and Jordan (and am so happy they are a couple!), I will enjoy seeing them on TAR!

I am really happy about this too. I think it will be very interesting to see how they do on the race. i hope she will do okay (since there is a lot of stuff she will have to do alone). I think they will do well together, and he will do well on his own. but i'm slightly worried how she will do on her challenges alone.

Oy, oy, oy.  Spent the morning at La Manse where we played with one of the two furnaces.  This is the one that is supposed to heat the house.  While it's a fairly new oil burning furnace, it's very low efficiency.  Because they obviously went to FAO years after they disassembled the original oil boiler which provided radiator heat, all of the heat vents upstairs are in the ceiling, obviously not optimal.  I did manage to get a decent airflow upstairs by mostly closing all of the downstairs vents, but it's obvious we'll need a bigger furnace for this house, probably a heat pump which would provide some tax rebates.  I also did dead mouse remediation from the pool, which was not my favorite thing ever to do.

Next, I watched an episode of SUPERNATURAL - season four on Blu-ray. This was the episode where we learned who was really responsible for the deaths of several angels and that particular entity was destroyed. Not a very pleasant episode but an effective one, and once again, Jensen Ackles came through with the superb performance.

Then I watched GLADIATOR on Blu-ray. I certainly saw what all the screaming was about. This is one of the most erratic and frustrating transfers I've seen in a while. For every gorgeous, jaw-dropping beautifully high def shot, there are one or two comparable ones with excessive DNR applied making it soft and kind of mushy. It never gets as bad as PATTON or GANGS OF NEW YORK with the digital tampering, and maybe some of the softness was inherent in the original photography (I didn't do any A/B comparisons yet).

But the picture was irritatingly inconsistent. The sound was wonderful: DTS-HD MA 5.1 that was beautifully handled.

I haven't decided what I want to watch when I go back down. It might be time to watch another of the HD-DVDs that are sitting there. That machine needs to be taken on a periodic spin so its parts won't deteriorate from lack of movement. I've got HOLLYWOODLAND and BABEL and DAYLIGHT and CINDERELLA MAN and GRAND PRIX on HD-DVD (among other titles), so that may be the way to go today.

Once again, I got no new review material in the mail, so I'm assuming I'm going to have another day off tomorrow.

I meant to mention this morning when I was talking about RAISING THE BAR being canceled that THREE RIVERS was also canceled by CBS. Alas.

CBS should have stuck by Alex O'Loughlin's MOONLIGHT. If they had waited a season, TWILIGHT would have hit, and they would have had their own launch pad for starting their own vampire saga full tilt.

Now that he's free, I wonder if CBS would consider doing a TV-movie with Mick St. John and company. I haven't noticed any of those actors being hired for any other regular TV work.

Back from Fed Ex - I've said it before but now I MEAN it - I will never again use this shipping service.  For the FOURTH bloody time this year they've raised their rates again.  The same exact package I shipped three weeks ago now costs TEN dollars more.  I hope these people slowly go out of business.  They are cocky, don't treat their customers well, and need to go away.  If people get upset enough and start using other services (almost all of whom are now cheaper) then perhaps they'll realize just how stupid they've been, and my only hope is that by the time they realize it that it's too bloody late.  And that's bloody that.

I noticed that the DGA is screening Red Cliff (tonight or tomorrow, can't remember now) - and it's this short US version for idiots.  And that's what they're trying to get nominated of an Oscar.  The film makes no sense, is missing 140 minutes of footage from the two-part original and is a travesty.  As long as it took me to figure out who everyone was and their deals in the first one, once I got past that twenty minutes or so, I knew everything and then it was very easy to follow.  By making these awful wholesale cuts (basically the first forty-five minutes that follow the first scene of the film are gone, maybe more.  They try to help by putting in awful narration and on-screen title cards for characters, but it actually makes it harder to understand, and, of course, all motivations and history and character development are shot to hell.  Shame on them.  I just got the score CD and it's wonderful.  I did notice that the Asian Blu-Ray release of the separate part one and two are all-region, so anyone can play them.

GLEE has a new episode tonight, the penultimate one before the half season finale where the club goes to Sectionals.

Question about GLEE - I've missed the last 2 episodes and not even had time to watch them online.  Is there anything I should know before watching tonight's?

Yes, all but one of the main characters was killed off last week in their musical montage tribute to Columbine.

In other breaking news, I was just stopped and questioned by the police as I walked down to get Zach from school.  They let me know the neighborhood is full of undercover cops right now.

Did they give you any hints as to how they decide whom they stop?

What sort of bells and whistles did you/do you set off?

I would think long and hard about the host - that's for starters.  I'm not sure who it would be, but I'd get the right guy or gal.  Then I'd make sure the writing for that person was actually funny.  Then I'd stop with all the little one-shot newcomers and flavors of the moment and try to have as many legends on the show as we have left (admittedly not that many).  I'd get rid of any extraneous clip segments, I'd stop trying to make it look like a bad episode of Sonny and Cher, and I'd bring some class back.  I'd get rid of all musical segments save for the best song selections and I would have those done simply and not like bad concert performances with terrible overblown lighting.  I would prohibit fans in the audience - sorry, but letting them in for the Oscars and the Tonys turns the shows into a teeny-bopper woo-hooing travesty.  If I were producing, the show would not run one second over three hours, and frankly, I'd probably get it done in two-and-a-half, although these days the commercial time is outrageous, so three hours is really only two.  I would show the nominees the 1954 telecast, when speeches consisted of "thank you" and if they went a few seconds longer, were to the point and gracious and weren't about phony crying jags and emotional idiocy and strutting egos.

It's very busy now in retail, especially at our Borders.  Though there are more shoppers, and many more things for me to do, our daily sales are still down from last year.  People are still spending, but, they are certainly a little more careful about what they are spending.  Plus our bi-weekly sales (including coupons) have been really good bargains (50% off the blu-ray of PLANET EARTH, i.e.) and buy one get one books, combined with many 40% cover stickers as well as sales incentives such as "buy this dvd and get a $5.00 gift card" have certainly made that daily dollar count 'appear' to be less.
I'm certainly enjoying being on the floor and talking books and reading with the customers and sharing those few minutes with them.
BUT, I'm just so darned tired after a day in the store -and it's that time for 40+ hour work weeks - that I have been errant and truant, but, thinking only good thoughts of the folks on HHW.

Pink-undie joy may come to Arizona!

CQ (http://blogs.cqpolitics.com/cgi-bin/mt/mt-search.cgi?IncludeBlogs=38&search=arpaio)

Quote
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R) -- two of conservatives' favorite anti-illegal immigration firebrands and potential 2010 candidates for statewide office in Arizona -- have teamed up to raise more than $100,000 as part of a holiday party being held Dec. 5.

A recent poll from Rasmussen Reports showed Arpaio leading all comers in the Arizona governor's race, while Hayworth is in a statistcal tie with Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in a hypothetical primary match-up.

Watched MARKED WOMAN on TCM.  Haven't seen it since I was a kid.  Tough good movie with a terrific Bette Davis performance.  And her five women co performers are also great....especially Lola Lane!

Good movie.  It's based on the Lucky Luciano case.

Learn something everyday at HHW!!!

Thanks DR DRUXY.  Did you ever deal with agent Jack Pomeroy....or was he before your time?

One of her really electrifying underrated performances.

I watched a bit of THE PETRIFIED FOREST in HD, and it looked gorgeous.

I really wanted to shove a mattress in Amber Riley's yowling maw during one number.....but other than that - GLEE rocked.

I began my evening watching HOLLYWOODLAND on HD-DVD. The mystery surround the death of George Reeves is a fascinating saga, and all of the Ben Affleck/Reeves sequences in the movie are interesting and compelling.

All of Adrian Brody's scenes where he's investigating the Reeves death are also interesting. BUT, when we have to sit through an hour of his domestic problems with ex-wife and son, it's TORTURE.

But I bought the disc (on cutout for $3) for the HD and the Reeves story. Unbelievable how a crime like this could be swept under the carpet with a flimsy investigation that had so many unanswered questions and nonsensical conclusions.

I watched all three bonus featurettes on the disc, none all that great, but it was great to see Robin Tunny (who's the lady boss of CBI on THE MENTALIST) playing the party girl slut Leonore Lemmon. I was glad to see that they had Jack Larson interviewed for a couple of those featurettes.

I enjoyed GLEE also. I thought it got off to a pretty slow start, but it was completely wonderful from "Jump" onward. And I was SO happy about the revelation. Emma's advice to Shu was pretty absurd, I thought.

For DR JMK, I got this email from Marc Acito, who grew up in New Jersey:
Your friend is mistaken. I moved here after college. But that's almost 20 years ago, almost as long as I lived on the east coast. So Portland is kind of my hometown.

Marc's response to my telling him I'd worked on FINIAN'S RAINBOW:
I just read John Lahr's New Yorker review. I'd forgotten how magnificent the score is. Would love to see it. You did arrangements? Washed out Cheyenne Jackson's thong?

So, Cillaliz, how long can he sit in jail? Do you get a trial for contempt of court? Or just sit in jail until the judge decides you can get out?

Good Evening!

After cooking and then eating my dinner, I decided to get out of my apartment for a bit, so I called up my friend, Bradley, invited myself over, and watched "Glee" and "Top Chef" over at his place. ;)

As for "Glee"....

Whew! I'm glad that that one plot element will not be carried out throughout the rest of the season.  -However, I did wonder if there was a "lost episode" or at least a "lost scene" or two - the revelation just seemed to happen too fast - at least in "Glee time".

As for tonight's "Top Chef", Finale, Part 1...

The chef who went home basically sabotaged chef-self during the Judge's Table.  Ah, well... Should be a great Finale next week!

My new bank/debit/credit card came today, thank the lord! Maybe I can get a couple of things ordered before they go off sale.

Can I send you a list of things to pick up for me?

Would that I could!

I did get my friend Jeff's Christmas gifts ordered

Thanks, Matt!

LOL! But I didn't think you folks celebrated Christmas. Guess I was misinformed.

I'm a half-breed, I get to celebrate both, and as soon as Keith finishes my genealogy backround, maybe Kwanzaa, too!  :)

I think in this case, he is refusing a direct judges order and he could be held until the judge lets him out.   I could be wrong. There are some types of contempt where you have a set maximum number of days.

This morning I went to my favorite coffee place and got my usual coffee to go. I got in my car and as I tried to take a sip through the plastic lid if flew off and coffee went EVERYWHERE!   I did burn my hand, but not bad, my blackberry didn't get so lucky.  Coffee went into the phone and basically fried the keyboard.   The good news was I was able to sync it to my computer and save all the data...the sort of bad news is I had to get a new phone.  I had insurance, but....well....I decided it was time to upgrade and got a Blackberry Storm 2.

I love it!!   We also discovered that I had a bundle I was paying for that included $30 to use my phone as a modem.   Noce that almost 2 years later I find this out.  I didn't even know how to do it!  So we cut $30 off my monthly bill and the new phone (Which also had a nice rebate) will be paid for in savings in just a few months.   cool Beans.

Time for me to go to sleep. I have had a long day, it started with the coffee and sort of went down hill from there.  The new phone made it all worth while.  I'm really having fun with it.   It's got a touch screen but it clicks when you touch it.  Kind of cool

Finished my viewing for the evening - a very interesting and wonderfully done Australian film in stop motion animation called Mary and Max.  There are times when you'd swear the writer had either read the Kritzer books or had visited this website - very similar wordplay at times.  But a totally unique film that probably won't find much of an audience.
