Post by: elmore3003 on December 28, 2009, 05:41:00 AM
Good morning, all! I wanted to be out of bed at 6:30 this morning so I went to bed at 10 pm. At 2:30 I was wide awake: the neighbor above me was walking around, dragging something around, and making a rather unneighborly racket for some time and that put me off my sleeping cycle. I mostly dozed between 3 and 6 am, when I finally fell into a deep sleep and dreamed, it was something about my last college roommate and other folk I cannot now identify. I haven't seen my roommate since his wedding in June, 1971, so I have no idea what prompted his appearance. When I woke, it was 7:45 and I figured the hell with it.

So, today, another trip to the post office to mail  CDs of the 9/18 John McGlinn memorial to several friends; the son of one of Evan McGlinn's friends taped the entire two and a half hour concert on his phone, and it sounds very good. Several of the singers, and John's sister Lorin, asked for copies, so I spent a couple of hours burning the CDs on Saturday. After that, the NYPL for more historic newspapaers online and more biographical work on Harold Sanford and Otto Langey.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday to Our DR Julie !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In other news...

When I stepped into my apartment, I heard this low buzzing, rattling noise. At first I thought it was my roommate's alarm clock - ??? - then I realized it was something in the living room.  Alas, I then realized it was the DVR.  The screen was stuck in "boot" mode, and as soon as I unplugged it, the buzzing and rattling stopped.  Then I plugged it back in again, more buzzing and rattling, then it stopped... But it never booted up.  So... I unplugged it again and left it unplugged while I took a shower.  Well...  I'm really not looking forward to switching out a DVR box during this holiday week.  Although, I have had some previous communications with some of the Time-Warner folks via Twitter... Hmm...

Yes, Julie. It's an ION Tape2PC unit. We have an old system which works withouth the USB cable but, as I said, it's old and the quality is not great so when Phil and Rose asked what we wanted for Christmas this popped into our mind. Since we already have the turntable and it works great, we decided to get the tape deck as well. You can attach it to a stereo system and use it as a plain cassette deck without the computer but the USP port allows us to attach it to the computer and use Audacity and burn our tapes to the hard drive, clean them up (if necessary) and them burn them to CD!

For what it's worth, I've always found that the way to get the best deal on a car is to not be afraid to walk out the door.

Once you fall in love with a particular car, you're a goner.

This is a buyer's market.  Drive a hard bargain.  Say "No," and the salesman will come chasing after you.

Good luck!

No UPS deliveries yet today, so it looks like I'll be finishing up 8 1/2's bonus features. They are formidible! Several documentaries and interviews that run an hour each (at least three of those that I glimpsed in the table of contents), so if I indeed continue with it today, it'll take all afternoon and likely some of the evening.

Monumental events in my life in 2009:

My health crisis. Having had almost picture-perfect health for my entire life, this was a life-altering experience. I battled some kind of inflammatory nerve condition for about three months. I'm happy to say through exercise and the sterling efforts of my physical therapists, I have almost fully recovered, the only remnants of my condition a slight numbness in the last three fingers of my right hand.

While I was battling my physical ailments, my house decided to get sick as well with a back porch roof needing complete replacement and a shower head falling off in mid-use causing me to finish my cleansing under a single stream of water coming from the bare pipe. And without strength in my right hand to fix it, I had to enlist the help of a friend after I found a replacement head for it. With all of the doctor, medicine, hospital, and physical therapy bills looming (even with insurance), the last thing I needed was to deal with expensive home repairs.

In the midst of all this, I also had to renew my driver's license right when I was in terrible physical condition. A three hour wait in line before making it to schedule an appointment did me no good either, but I did get it out of the way.

As for "Blue Velvet"...

I've tried a couple of times to watch the movie all the way through, and I don't think I've ever succeeded.  Well, at least I don't ever remember watching the whole movie in one sitting.  I guess I need to come back to it one of these days. -And since my Cable/DVR box is on the fritz, I guess I could pull out my VHS copy of it... ;)

*I will say that one of my big stumbling blocks with "Blue Velvet" is Isabella Rosselini.  Her Italian-ized English just pulls me out of the movie - well, almost every English movie she's ever done.

MR BK here are a couple of reviews of the car you are talking about.  I think it sounds like quite a deal - one unlikely to be matched especially in mileage by a dealer - and since you have the warranty - what's to worry?  Of course if you buy a black car, you will have to buy a fedora to wear while driving it.

I am back from an excruciating several hours in the emergency room.  I was awakened around 3:30 this morning by the most debilitating pain I  think I've ever experienced.  I thought for a moment I was experiencing some sort of Godzilla sized indigestion but quickly realized this was something worse.  I could barely breathe and thought I would, in BK's inestimable words, vomit on the ground.  A firetruck and an ambulance came, the firemen took my vitals and the ambulance driver took me off to the ER.  Unfortunately said ambulance driver was an idiot and took the most circuitous route to the hospital imaginable.  After a CAT scan it was determined that for the first time in my life I have several kidney stones and will probably be in this beleagured state for at least a day or two.  The ER doctor told me that kidney stones are the only ailment he treats where he's seen grown men cry, and women regularly say it hurts worse than childbirth.  I pray none of you ever have to experience this--it's really hideous.

Highlights would have to be our production of The King and I which was such a joy to work on, and my trip to WDW with the DP.  Oh, and Christmas Eve Mass with a bigger choir (20) and instrumentalists, it was incredible.

Oh wow - how could I forget, the biggest highlight of 2009, our son Manny (now almost 8 months old) coming to live with us and his DD Uncle Otto.  Life with Manny as been challenging, but he's such a sweet dog and we love him to death- even Otto loves him on occasion!

2009 was a nice enough year for me. Got some interviews published, which is always nice. Began working on big project which I hope to complete in 2010.

My only disappointment with 2009 was that I have gotten myself into serious debt, and this time refinancing the house is not an option (due to the fact that housing prices in my area are down, down, down).

Due to this rather serious debt situation I was unable to take any trips to NY or Los Angeles (of course having done so in the past is partly why I am in such great debt)

However, in 2010 I plan to win the lottery and my financial woes will be gone.

The only other downer for this year that I can think of, is learning the my beloved Dog Bosco may have cancer, and it scares me to bits the thought of not having him around for another summer of fun. This dog really is my best friend!  :'(   But I plan to spend as much time with him as I possibly can, while he still is feeling good.

Just talked to the local dealer - I'm going to see him in a half-hour at which time I'll look at the Carfax report, ask a few more questions, and make a decision.  I canceled the appointment in Glendale - my pal David Wechter helped me last night by going on the the Kelly Blue Book site and also researching comps and he's of the opinion that this is a really good deal.

FEEL BETTER VIBES FOR DR JMK!

And the decision has been made and I am now the proud owner of a brand new (almost - car actually has only 688 miles on it), black obsidian Infinity G37.  As we were going over some things I got an e-mail from the Glendale dealer saying he had one sedan left - and the price, shockingly, was only $1100 more than what I was paying - same color.  BUT - it did not have the $2500 premium package stereo, etc. that mine has and 1100 is 1100 and I'm also getting a refund on most of what they charged me for the registration, since the car was already registered.  That should save me, according to the dealer guy, an additional $600 and that will happen when my license and registration arrives, which will be in two to three weeks.

I will say, these new-fangled cars are amazingly amazing.  No key - it just knows me.  When one has the keyless remote in one's pocket the car knows them - all I have to do is bush a button on the door and it unlocks the car.  And then I just push a button and the car starts.  And the stereo and stuff is all voice command.  The guy paired my iPhone with the car via bluetooth, and now I just push a button on the steering wheel to answer a call or to make a call.  I can speak the number I want to call or just say a name in my address book.  Who knew?  And now, I think I'll go drive the new motor car to the mail place and then I think I'll go have a spot of lunch.

DR JMK--ouch!!!!  I also went through a kidney stone attack about eight years ago.  Mine occurred at work and I wound up being ambulanced to the hospital.  They gave me a mild pain killer which actually helped.  I was extra lucky in that my attack totally subsided and returned only briefly over the following days before plunking the stone into my pee sieve.  It looked like a very tiny version of the meteor that the Blob came to Earth in.

I sort of pushed myself to get out of the house today so I went looking for, coincidentally, blue velvet curtains.  I didn't find any, but I did pick up the NINE sountrack which I'll listen to tomorrow.

It was pretty cold and windy out there and I needed to stop at a Wawa for a cup of hot black coffee to shake off the chill.

I think I stumbled upon the title of my next jazz recording--BLACK COFFEE AND BLUE VELVET.

Good Evening!

Well... The original plan was to go to The Guggenheim and check out the Kandinsky exhibit, but by the time we got there, the line was out the door and down the block - about a hundred people deep. In the wind and cold.  So...

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was open today for one of their "Met Holiday Mondays".  I hadn't been there in ages, so it was like it was all brand new to me.  -Oh, and to Monkey too.  ;)

*They had a couple of the galleries roped off today. At first, I thought they were doing some maintenance or an installation. It turned out that they were just short-staffed today due to the holiday schedule.  However, there was still plenty to see.  We didn't even make it up to the second floor.

*And, actually, I've been dealing with some minor - thankfully(!) - kidney stone issues the past two weeks myself.  And I found out that two friends of mine who live in Inwood - 40 blocks north of me - are also dealing with them.  And we all seemed to come down with them at the same time.  -I wonder if something is in the water.

Photograph as requested.  I did some errands and went to Jerry's Deli for a sandwich - this photograph was taken in the Jerry's parking lot.  Funny story: I came out of the restaurant and went to the car and was admiring it from the front when I saw a ding in the paint on the hood - hadn't seen it before and I must say I found it irksome.  I went to the door and pushed the button to open.  Nothing.  Then I looked and it wasn't my car!  My car was next to it - both black and similar looks, but the car with the ding was an Audi.  Whew!

Drives like a dream.  Still futzing with the seat positions, but I think I have it the way I like it now, and happily it memorizes the position you like.

No, this dealer doesn't do trades.  Nor would I have gotten much of anything, what with the brakes needing to be redone, the paint on the roof oxidizing and coming off, and the battery probably needing to be replaced.  I may see if my daughter wants it and her friend could just drive it to her.

I was going to say "check out the Nissan 370Z," but you've beaten me to the punch - The G37s have the same V6 engine. Awesome driving (and hoonage) vibes to the guy who produced "This Funny World."

Someday I'll get a new car and we'll race. I'll probably trade in my current car for either a suspension upgrade or a turbocharger to be put in the new one.

Congrats on the new car....

Was quite worried about getting Ye Newe Car in the garage environment.  I opened the garage door and tried to ease it in reallllly slowly, but at a certain point just before it goes in the exhaust pipe or whatever's low in the back of the car scrapes against the pavement - with my last car, at some point it scraped so much it punched a hole in the oil pan or something.  As soon as I heard it scrape I backed out and parked on the street.  But we've got rich entitled young cretins in this neighborhood, and they caused at least two dings on my other car and I'm not going to chance that.  So, I assessed the situation, I reviewed the situation, and then I tried a solution, which was to put two large pieces of cardboard boxing on the cement at the place where the steepness is just too much for today's motor cars.  I then eased the car up and into the garage and lo and behold and behold and lo, no scraping at all.  That's the trick for now and I may have my handyman assemble one large cardboard runner (I used two separate pieces) that I can just move in and out easily and that can just rest on the garage floor when not in use.  So, now the car is safe inside the garage environment, and that's a good thing.  And if I have to run out for something this very evening (doubtful) the Olde Motor Car is out front.

Congrats on your new car BK!!!! It looks fabulous!! You're going to love the keyless entry.  I'm assuming yours is like mine and it's impossible to lock your keys in the car because it won't lock with them inside.  Nice feature.  The bluetooth phone is really fun too.  it took me awhile to get used to it and you have to remember to transfer the call to your phone when you want to get out of the car or you'll hang up on people.  But it's great.

2009 was a very good year for me in many many ways.  I think the real highlight for me, though is the unseen. I gained more self confidence this year than any time I can remember.  I am very happy with the way my business is progressing.  There is a very long way to go, and I'm sticking my neck out going into 2010, but I have no fear about it.  I totally believe it will all work out and that we are definitely on the right track.  It's a very exciting time and the hard work of 2009 is what is making it possible.

The keyless entry is fantastic, but I must say it's still unnerving me a little.  But no, you can't lock your keys in the car because the little thing you carry is in your pocket and never actually goes in the car.

I spent much of the evening luxuriating with GONE WITH THE WIND on Blu-ray. Looks just fantastic and, as usual with Blu-rays of classics I've seen dozens and dozens of times, I sat there noticing things I hadn't noticed before. Just watched the movie - didn't do any of the bonus material today. At some point this week, I'll likely rewatch the making of GWTW. I know they didn't transfer it in HD, but that's OK. I'll enjoy seeing it again anyway.

We had a very nice day, quiet and relaxed. We went to

Eisenberg's Sandwich Shop (http://www.eisenbergsnyc.com/)

on Fifth Avenue and 22nd Street for lunch. They have "...been raising New York's cholesterol since 1929" It's a lot of fun to eat there. It's a sandwich counter with some tables and they have been in continuous operation for 80 years! I had a BLT on white toast (I went off my low-cholesterol diet for lunch) and a chocolate egg cream and Anthony had a liverwurst (ugh - I feel about liverwurst the way I feel about beets) sandwich and a chocolate egg cream. Yum!!!

We are having a guest tomorrow to see our festive tree. I have to contact dear Larry to arrange a time for him to view the tree as well. Just a few more days of vacation left. But Larry can come over well into January since we leave the tree up for quite a while.

Anyway, it's late (for me) so I will take my leave. See you in the morning.

Ah, well...

Say Goodbye to Music: Broadway's Ragtime Will Close Jan. 3, 2010
(http://www.playbill.com/news/article/135546-Say-Goodbye-to-Music-Broadways-Ragtime-Will-Close-Jan.-3-2010)

:(

*This announcement makes me very sad for a number of reasons.  First of all, it's always sad when a show closes, regardless of the reasons. I also have some friends from DC in this production - many of whom were making their Broadway debut.  I just talked to two of them. Alas, both of them had just signed leases on new temporary (thankfully) apartments.  In fact, one of them moved into her new place today - just a few hours before the closing announcement was made official.  She signed up for another three month term.  My other friend got lucky(?) and just signed up for another month.  Her last (for now) Broadway paycheck will be covering that rent. :-\

DR Jane - Have you ever tried the peanuts from the Virginia Diner (http://www.vadiner.com/)?  Their product line more or less duplicates that of The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg (http://www.thepeanutshop.com/), but over the years, I've come to prefer the Virginia Diner peanuts (plain, roasted, salted).

*And I actually like the Peanut Soup from The Peanut Shop.
