Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little pepper on it, and now it is time for you to post until the peppered cows come home.

Okay.....I will hold all reservation plans until further notice from MR BK.

BUT, I am still seeing the show tomorrow.  If it is not entertaining - I might save you a trip....although meeting the gang would be most excellent.

Best thing about the internet....

Well, as DR GEORGE said...HHW.

And:

EBAY
and finding other fans of Frances Farmer and Allison Hayes

And reconnecting with some good people.  And using it to publicize the theater and the store.

DR Ginny - Thanks for the travel vibes.  It was a relatively painless trip down to Richmond, if just a wee bit chilly since the bus's heater didn't seem to want to kick back in after being in A/C mode for the past few days.  ...But I'm here.

And now, I think I'm going to take a very brief nap, and then I'll be heading over to Sidewalk Cafe to have brunch, but, most importantly, to see Edwina.  And then I want to check out the Ukrop's in Carytown.  I believe this is the last weekend of Ukrop's "existence" before they officially become part of the Martin's chain of grocery stores.  And then I have a brief rehearsal with the singer I'm playing for next week.  And then... ???

Laters...

What do I like best about computers?

As a writer, if I want to change something in my manuscript, I don't have to re-type pages and pages to get the alteration to seamlessly fit in.  I just click my mouse.

What do I like least about computers?

When it doesn't work like it's supposed to do.

What do I like most about the Internet?

Making new friends, keeping in touch with old friends and being able to find the answer to almost anything I want to know within seconds.

Good morning!

Much chillier this morning, so the walk was very brisk but it was delightfully cool and I enjoyed it. Another day of this coolness, and then it starts to heat back up again. A fair tradeoff.

TOD:

I never enjoyed writing more than when I started writing using a computer and word processor. If I had had this marvelous tool when I was in college writing all of those term papers with footnotes at the bottom of the pages, they would have seemed so much easier to accomplish. Folks who had to "typeset" all those term papers by hand (and with professors who insisted on footnotes instead of endnotes) have no idea what a massive headache doing those papers were way back when.

And writing reviews now is also so much more pleasurable with the internet always handy to check facts, etc.

The internet has also been a boon for keeping in touch with friends and in being able to buy almost anything anyone wants with the click of a mouse button.

The most disturbing aspect of computers and particularly the internet is that always uneasy feeling that someone can peep into your personal life and information without your knowing it. And the scam artists out there whose sole resosn for living is to find some way to defraud innocent peoplemakes it a mine field even when one is dealing with legitimate businesses.

Good morning, all! Last night my allergies were so bad I could not sleep so I took some Nyquil. I'll blame it for my sleeping so late this morning. I was supposed to attend the Castrecl Encores! luncheon today, but I just canceled because I cannot clear my sinuses and throat of all the gunk in the air.  I would rather stay inside and lie around. I swear, the older I get, the worse the allergies get.

So, I do have some Montgomery & Stone work to finish up the edits, some OZ work on the Chorus of Poppies, and several poorly working allergy meds to take to function.

Everyone's covering my thoughts on the pros and cons of a computer so I'll abstain.

Best things about the Internet: Being able to reconnect with old friends and make new friends. Also, having all that information at your fingertips (and most of it is accurate).

I cannot imagine what writing ten books would have been like on a conventional typewriter - in fact, I can pretty much say I probably would have given up after book one and am not sure I would have even started book one.  The ability to move things around with a click, to easily save different versions, to edit and correct in seconds - for me, the computer and word processing itself has been amazing.

That said, I did love my IBM Selectric and would not give it up for years.  And, in the early days of computers and word processing things were very confusing and difficult, setting up macros and all that weird stuff, and losing stuff like crazy - that would have been back in the late 1980s, which is when I first attempted to write something on the computer.

I loved my IBM Selectric, too. I could write so much faster than ever before. It forced me to be more organized, too. Nowadays, I try starting at the beginning, but if I'm stuck, I'll just write the middle or the end and force it somehow into place.

I got many a very well paying temp job writing Macros in the early days of computers and dedicated word processors.  I was about the only temp in Portland in those days able/willing to go into a situation "cold" without ever having worked on a particular system before.  I wrote all sorts of programming for Wang, Lanier, Displaywriter, and then once software on PC's became the norm, WordPerfect, you name it.

BK, you really need to look into releasing Percy's scores for THE THIRD DAY and I'D RATHER BE RICH.  RICH even has a hit single on it, "Almost There" by Andy Williams.  Plus I just found out there's evidently a jettisoned score Percy wrote for the 1968 George Peppard detective thriller P.J. lying around somewhere.  Hefti ended up scoring that one.  Percy still got credit for one song, "Welcome to St. Crispin."  I think you woud sell out 1000 copies within hours, easily.

TOD - When I was teaching prospective teachers at Miami University how to teach their students about information-seeking and evaluation, there was a double page ad in the Wall St. Journal that read:

"The good news is

 there are five

gazillion

 sources of information

 on the Internet.

 The bad news is

 there are five gazillion

I bought a copy of the paper, trimmed the ad, had it laminated, and hung it in my office/cubicle until my retirement.

When my aunt bought her first electric typewriter, she gave me her ancient Royal black typewriter, and I used it for many years. One of my high school graduation presents was a Smith-Corona portable which I took to college and wrote all of my term papers on. I bought my first electric typewriter after I graduated from college and was in graduate school, and it was a Royal electric typewriter.

I watched this week's PROJECT RUNWAY as I ate lunch. The first two designers chosen for Fashion Week, I was completely in agreement about. They designed great, unusual things all season and were certainly the two that I think it will come down to in the final.

As for the third place finsher, I was NOT happy with this selection. The person eliminated in favor of #3 was, I felt, a better overall designer with a great variety of looks all season and really beautiful craftsmanship. I think they made a great mistake here, but I honestly think gender had something to do with that final selection.

Back from bacon and eggs and Monsterpalooza, the most well-attended, ill-organized LA event of its type that I've ever been to.  Doors were supposed to open at 11:30 so I got there at noon to find out the doors hadn't yet opened and there was a line almost two blocks long.  I then waited for an hour and fifteen minutes to pay my twenty bucks and enter.  How stupid are these people?  Get it together and figure it out is what I say.  And that long line continued to be there for the next ninety minutes.  Outrageous.  And all because of organization or lack thereof.  Once inside I found it incredibly confusing and not nearly as well laid out as the Hollywood Show.  I did manage to find our very own Mr. Bert I. Gordon and daughters, and had a wonderful visit with all.  He gave me his newly-published memoir, I gave him a bunch of Empire Of The Ants CDs and told him the good news that we were doing another BIG CD in the near future.  And we're all supping tomorrow night at Genghis Cohen, so that will be fun.

I also saw my pal, artist Bill Stout, and several dealers I knew, met William Schallert (sitting with a friend of mine who wrangles some of the stars) - at the same table I met Warren Stevens.  Later, just before I left, Stevens was trying to find Kevin McCarthy and the very unhelpful people at the front desk were being so stupid and ridiculous that I took him to McCarthy because he was sitting right near Mr. BIG.

The weather here is cold and dreary and windy. Yuck!

I think the high was supposed to be 10C (40s). But the windy was really bad. So definitely no bike ride today. Not sure if i would have been able to even without the wind because of my neck. Although for some reason my back feels better when i bike ride. So maybe it wouldn't have hurt my neck. I'll have to try it maybe tomorrow depending on the weather.

Yesterday was a very sad day for me.  I stopped at the credit union, and as I was pulling out, a kid in an older clunker ran into my brand new car.   I just barely have 4,000 miles on it.

I was just going to ask what DR Laura asked. Was there a lot of damage?

Are you alright?

How does it work where you are?  Is it determined by whose fault it is?

My friend, George, stopped by today to look at my windows.  He thinks I can just take them out and have them reglazed instead of replacing them.  He does restoration of historic buildings.  He also offered to take the windows out for me and take them to his friend who does the reglazing!   I'm thinking that I'll do that with some of them and see how it goes.

I started to red THE RED LEATHER DIARY.  Fascinating.
I also am reading the short stories of Flannery O'Connor. . .what a brilliant writer.
Love O'Connor's work. She had a singular vision and a singular writing style that has often been imitated but never equaled. I wonder how much of her tortured style came from listening to her peafowl scream. It can have its affect.

Thanks everyone.  No damage to me, and not a major amount of damage to my car (one observer estimated $4,000.00).  The kid ( I have got to stop calling him that) the gentleman in the other wehicle was probably in his late twenties to early thirties.  It is lucky I am not a bartender anymore, because I really can't tell ages.

Anyway, the gentleman has insurance, the insurance was in effect (his policy doesn't end until 4/21/10), but, of course they will have to make sure that he was driving a vehicle that was covered under that insurance.  We both have the same insurance company, but they said they would judge it as if it were two separate companies in determining who was at fault.

Today, I went back and I took a couple of photos of my car at the scene.  And yes, he may have been on the phone at the time.

Yes, DR's - it was the most fun I have had in a long time.

Met some very nice ladies and gentlemen - danced in front of an appreciative crowd - and got to wear my John Travolta suit and hair.

I did also get one of the biggest laughs of the night when Beau the emcee asked me a question about my wig.....and I took a nice beat and asked him:  "What wig?"

And certainly our 26 was a respectable score - for what we did.

Just finished Mr. BIG's book.  A very brief 160 pages (plus about sixty pages of great photos), he has some lovely stories about his childhood and intro into the business, although one might have wished for more info.  The style of the book is fine, and Bert is a good storyteller, and I've been told that some errors in the text will be corrected.

And yet newspapers and some publishers are doing away with copy editors, saying they are an unnecessary expense. Fact checkers (I did type that "fat" checkers first) are also in short supply. One of my favorites of those errors was in the Fosse bio, "Razzle Dazzle," in which a photo of Thelma Oliver in "Sweet Charity" is identified as Thelma Ritter.

I've mentioned it to the director - as a possibility.  It's going to have to be this coming weekend - looking forward to your report.  I think I'd fly directly to Indianapolis, since that's where the theater is, stay overnight, and then go visit the Pogue's for a couple of days.

I got an e-mail from Disney alerting me that the Blu-rays of ARMAGEDDON and TOMBSTONE are in the mail. They are scheduled to arrive mid-week, but they don't come out until the 27th so that's plenty of lead time.

I also see that two "monumental masterpieces" of cinema art are scheduled for release in the coming months, and it will fall on me to review them more than likely: ELECKTRA and SHOWGIRLS. Oy!

Wouldn't that be more of a warning than an alert?

I think I would rather sit through SHOWGIRLS than to endure ARMAGEDDON for a second time.

And I feel just the opposite. ARMAGEDDON, for all its cheesiness, is a guilty pleasure I enjoy revisiting. I know lots of people find SHOWGIRLS campy fun, but I think it ranks with the all-time worst movies ever made and is PAINFUL to sit through. I don't even find it funny on an Ed Wood level. It's just bad.

I've mentioned it to the director - as a possibility.  It's going to have to be this coming weekend - looking forward to your report.  I think I'd fly directly to Indianapolis, since that's where the theater is, stay overnight, and then go visit the Pogue's for a couple of days.

BK, are you still planning on coming to the May 7th performance in Olympia and not April 30th?

Yes, looking like it will be May 7th - definitely not the 30th now.  I'll probably book the trip this week at some point.

I dropped over to muse Margaret's - had to deliver something - and got to have yummilicious homemade strawberry cream pie.  Most excellent.

Found a nice downtown hotel through Quikbook and since Pogue will have his car we can just drive to wherever the theater is.  Boy, hotel rates are sure cheaper when you're not in NY.  Shockingly cheap for a really nice room.

The hotel gets really nice reviews, too, but happily with Quikbook, you don't pay up front and one can cancel up to forty-eight hours before arrival, so if something better comes along I can cancel and book elsewhere, although I think this sounds fine.

Well I had a most amazing evening at this month's Rave in the Nave.  We presented two groups of young performers, a troupe from Eugene and the acclaimed Dance West, a youth dance group from Beaverton's Arts Magnet Academy.  Now here's the cool part:  they danced to some tunes Mr. BK produced!  There was one that wasn't familiar, but it sure sounded like a BK production, and the lyric had something to do with Love is like sand.  Does that sound familiar, BK?  Almost, but not quite, sounded like Susan Egan.

Now here's the most amazing part.  They were doing this medley of Broadway stuff and broke into I Hope I Get It and their Director and Choreographer leaned over to me and said, "That's the original Michael Bennett choreography--I worked with Michael."  I asked her when, and I was amazed when she said, "Why, I'm a 'Turkey Lurkey' girl--I was the one in the middle!"  She replaced Donna on Broadway after Donna left to do 'Company.'  Her name is Julane Stites.  Isn't that cool?

-Especially since there's no college basketball game in town to drive the rates up that weekend. ;)

Very cool.  Sand is from Sondheim At The Movies - indeed one of my productions - vocalist is Christiane Noll, orchestration is, of course, by elmore.

Is Julane the one in the middle on the Ed Sullivan broadcast of the number?  Donna was long gone by that point.

Fox, Universal new releases delayed 28 days on Netflix
April 9, 2010

Netflix customers who want to see "Avatar" or "It's Complicated" on DVD will have to wait for more than just their mailman.

20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures have signed new distribution deals with the DVD-by-mail service that include a 28-day delay on new releases.

The agreements are similar to one signed by Warner Bros. in January.

Court Records Detail Accusations Against Arrested School Coach

LEWES, Del. - The head football coach at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes was arrested Thursday and charged with repeated sexual assault of a teenage girl.

Thomas A. Ott, 39, of Lewes, is charged with second-degree rape, fourth-degree rape, unlawful sexual contact, continuous abuse of a child and unlawful imprisonment, Delaware State Police said.

Police said they were called to a home on Savannah Road Thursday evening to investigate a possible sexual assault. Police described the victim as a 16-year-old girl.

The High School is within walking distance of the pedophile pediatrician's office.

So much for the innocence of rural America.

MR BK I sent you a link to a more convenient hotel.....let me know that it arrived.

I don't think you need to be downtown.....the airport is WEST of town....and the theatre is SOUTH EAST.....this hotel will be easier for Mr Pogue to get to....via the Interstate system.

I just booked the more convenient hotel and will cancel the downtown hotel in the morning.  I just saved seventy bucks and get free Internet, so that's great.
