Post by: bk on April 12, 2010, 12:06:44 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little pit and a little pat with an emphasis on the latter, and now it is time for you to post until the pit-a-pat cows come home.

The airline talking about charging for using the toilet is

Ryan Air (http://www.ryanair.com/en)

They are a Dublin (Ireland) based, very, very low fare airline. They don't even operate in the U.S. Paying to use a toilet is more widespread in Europe so people are used to the idea. It has caused some concern but the owner of Ryan Air has mentioned this possibility before. He may go through with it at some point but it won't change the face of airline travel. I've flown Ryan Air. Believe me, paying to use the toilet is the least of your worries.

Spirit Airlines is the only airline charging for carry-on luggage. The other airlines have not yet begun to charge as well.

"David Castelveter, a spokesman at Air Transport Association, which represents the leading U.S. airlines, said he's not aware of any ATA members charging for carry-on luggage."

DR GEORGE those trailers are available on a lot of Drive In DVD's very cheaply - I recognized a couple of sequences from the Roger Corman Best of the B's set I just got for review.

The lobby is also adorned with 50's sci fi posters, and the refreshment area is decked out like a movie theater refreshment stand, it's very nice and appropriate, and there seemed to be plenty of volunteers to do everything.  It's a very nice set up.

Elizabeth Taylor is engaged  -  and yesterday's posts from MR BK reminded me of this story, which I have related before -

Elizabeth Taylor had just won the Academy Award for Butterfield 8 and was being flooded with movie offers...including one million dollars for CLEOPATRA.  A group of Hollywood types was sitting at a table in Vegas saying what they would offer her to be in a movie - since it was a foregone conclusion that it would make money.

One man said he would offer $500,000 - another said he would offer $500,000 plus a percentage of the gross.  Buddy Hackett said that he would offer her $1000.  The others at the table expressed astonishment and Hackett replied:

"I would offer her $1000.  She would say 'Kiss my ass' - and that's all I wanted anyway."

Morning, all.

TOD:

Films: "Babette's Feast," "Tampopo" (the "noodle" western),  and at the top of the list, "Big Night." There have been numerous food scenes from Anita Morris covered in whipped cream in "The Happy Hooker" to "Monty Python's Meaning of Life" in which the guy eats so much he explodes. I also loved the scene in "GoodFellas" where Paul Sorvino cuts the garlic with a razor.

On TV, I loved "The Twilight Zone" episode "To Serve Mankind." And though I never saw it, I loved Cole Porter's shopping list song in "Come to the Supermarket in Old Peking" in "Aladdin."

I'm sure I'm forgetting tons of them, but there was a culinary group in town that, as a fund-raiser, staged what they called "Meals on Reels," in which scenes from foodie films were shown in between courses. The event died after the second or third year beccause they had exhausted the supply.

For some reason, I was very fond of WHO IS KILLING THE GREAT CHEFS OF EUROPE.  I saw it and loved it when it first opened back in the 70's, then would watch its incessant appearances on cable.  But when I caught it for the first time in years last fall, my reaction was "Meh..."

Some things should never be revisited.  Unfortunately, we never know which things until it's too late...

Last night's peculiar dream had something to do with summer theatre or a summer music camp, lots of students and a lot of campus My only real memory of the thing is a search for something that was missing from a desk and a line for buses.

Betsy and I both had the "unprepared" dream in various genres a couple of night ago.  Mine involved conducting and playing a show where I had no idea what was going on and my conductor's score was all out of order.  My dream entailed me being on stage at the grand piano desperately motioning to the drummer, the only other musician, to just keep playing until I could figure out what was going on.  Betsy's dream involved one of her "former lives" as a news anchor.  She was in the studio about to go live when she realized she had no copy and didn't know what to say.

Last time I had a similar dream scenario, I resolved the matter by singing a song.  I wasn't there to sing a song.  And it was certainly funny to dream about doing it.  I recall singing it a capella, and then listening to a playback and being amazed/surprised/miffed that there was an orchestral accompaniment and that I was singing in a different key.

Go know why anyone was recording it!

Hey, Mikey (I'm channeling Larry)

This coming Friday on BBC Radio 2 they are doing a special Bollywood Music Program.

Here is the program description:

"This is India! The land of dreams and romance, of fabulous wealth and fabulous poverty, of splendor and rags, of palaces and hovels, of famine and pestilence, of genii and giants and Aladdin lamps, of tigers and elephants, the cobra and the jungle, the country of a hundred nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and two million gods, cradle of the human race, birthplace of human speech, mother of history, grandmother of legend, great-grandmother of tradition" Mark Twain.

In this Friday Night Special - "From Hollywood to Bollywood" live from London Symphony Orchestra St Lukes in London - Hardeep Singh Kohli presents a selection of musical pictures of India - from classical composers like Rimsky Korsakov (Song Of India) and Elgar (Crown of India Suite) to the big Hollywood film scores for Gandhi (George Fenton) and Passage to India (Maurice Jarre). We'll recall the films of Sabu including Miklos Rozsa's 1942 score to "The Jungle Book". Robert Ziegler conducts the BBC Concert Orchestra who are joined by some traditional Bollywood singers and the award winning composer and percussionist Kuljit Bhamra. East meets West when Kuljit and his ensemble join the 60 piece BBC Concert Orchestra for some of Bollywood's greatest hits including songs from "Bombay Dreams" and "Jai Ho" from "Slumdog Millionaire".

During the concert interval BBC Asian Network presenters Pablo and Raj talk to composer A.R. Rahmin.

The program will air live on Friday, April 16th at 11am YOUR TIME. It's 8pm London time and 2pm NY time. If you can't listen to it live you have a week to listen to it at your leisure on the BBC iPlayer. It will be on the iPlayer until April 23rd. You need RealPlayer on your system to listen to the BBC on line, whether you are streaming live or listening to the iPlayer.

Interesting.
Doesn't quite work out the way the author wants it to. In the south, at least, plane trees seem to drop branches as much as they drop leaves. They wreaked havoc at a friend's house in Florida, and I had one removed from my backyard when I moved into this house in Texas. A lovely (and yes, pollen causing) apricot tree is growing in its place.

DR Jennifer - You're cooking chicken wings. They are chicken. Just season them and cook them, or cook them and season them. Simple. Go with a "spicing" you know you already like, and go from there.

TOD:  The TV show "Friends" featured several episodes that were centered on food preparation....Thanksgiving episodes, especially...and one particularly memorable episode in which Brad Pitt was the guest star.

One episode was memorable due to the appearance of Jon Lovitz in Season 1's "The One with the Stoned Guy".  He plays a restaurateur who gets stoned on marijuana just prior to interviewing Monica Geller for a job.  Monica has spent all day preparing a meal to impress him, and even hires Rachel to assist in serving.  Phoebe is dispatched to pick him up in her grandmother's cab.  We learn he toked a doobie on the way to Monica's apartment.

When he arrives, Monica is telling him all about her menu which includes an amuse bouche appetizer to be followed by onion tartlets.  Meanwhile, Lovitz (as "Steve") has the munchies and begins ransacking the kitchen for things, fighting Monica over cereal and Gummi Bears, some of which fall into a special soup she has prepared.

I still can't decide what i am going to do.  I could use a rib/chicken sauce i like. But then i would have to make it.

I've never just used dry spices on my wings. I'm afraid i won't like them.

Last time i tried a buffalo style batter. But had to scrap the sauce cause i hated the taste of it (glad i tasted it before putting on the wings). So i just put the rib/chicken sauce on it. But that would require a lot of work.

I sort of want something easy that would be tasty. I may do the BBQ. Not sure about that part yet.

Thanks.

Time-Warner cable is getting ready to reallign their entire digital cable service, and my cable box has been out of service all day today. The trial to assign custody rights to the baby took up a surprisingly brief amount of time on ONE LIFE TO LIVE. I'm sure the storyline would have dragged out for a week had TPTB wanted to keep the guys around, but it was rushed through quickly to shuffle them off into the wings. It was actually pretty anticlimactic.

Oh, the deer just live in the yard in the winter.  That comment really didn't bother me.  I can understand why people think they are   a nuisance. There are way to many of them and they damage trees, flowers, leave poop everywhere...so I get that, but when I put it together with hating cats....well, for an animal lover like me, it means something

I've know people who say they don't like cats, until they spent time with mine & then became converts.   Hate is a very strong reaction.  Often there is a story behind the reason.   Was his comment directed at your cats while you discussed the windows?  :(

I see that the Tony-winning musical NEXT TO NORMAL has won this year's Pulitzer Prize for Drama. I love when a musical wins this prize.

Cool!  There used to be a theater group here in Olympia that did its own annual "Magic of Broadway" revue (very cheap to produce ;)).  They ususally picked a couple of composers/song writing teams and did revues with their material.  One year (this was in the late 1990s, very early 2000s), I was asked if I had an idea that they could do...something different than what they'd been doing.  I suggested doing the musicals that had won the Pulitzer Prize for drama!  They loved the idea.  By this time, Rent had won the award and was only the seventh musical to win.  In doing research however, we found out that Oklahoma! had won a special Pulizter Prize, so we felt justified in adding that to the revue so that we could have four shows per act because we could only use three songs per show.  The Oklahoma! section was used at the end of act I, and the title song was a great way to send people out for the intermission.

We wanted to add a little bit of dramatic context (short scenes before songs, when appropriate), but were told specifically that we couldn't use ANY dialogue before or after the Chorus Line songs...no dramatic context at all.  So, we didn't.  We just sang those songs.  I got to do the Sunday in the Park with George songs.  It was a lot of fun and a great success. ;D

Broadway hit "Jersey Boys" sues rival show (http://www.comcast.net/articles/entertainment/20100412/ENTERTAINMENT-US-STAGE-JERSEYBOYS/).

Quote
NEW YORK — Producers of the blockbuster Broadway hit "Jersey Boys" have sued a touring stage show called "The Boys," labeling it a "copycat" production that competes unfairly with the original musical.

...

"The Boys" was created by former cast members of the original production, and says on its website it celebrates "the music of an era that lights up every generation. Music from The Beach Boys to Motown...and of course...The Four Seasons!"

:o

Good Evening!

Well... The pollen is most certainly in the air down here in Richmond... And all over the cars... Etc., etc., etc.  Thankfully, my "seasonal tolerance" seems to have kicked in.  Ahhh.... :)

I read about that earlier today, and, frankly, I'm kind of surprised that a "cease and desist" was not issued as soon as "The Boys" started up.  There's another "Franki Valli and the Four Seasons" show that's out there now, and I'm wondering if they're going to get targeted next.

The guy I was interested in actually said he HATES cats....and he repeated it.....How on earth can anyone hate cats....and he dislikes deer.   Good grief....guess I won't be distracted by him anymore

I can understand how you'd be upset by his attitude toward cats....but, exactly how many deer do you have in your house, and are they pets or passers-through?

Well obviously you'd be upset by the cat comment since you have/love cats.

It does seem slightly odd for someone to say they hate cats. I could see someone not loving them. But why would they hate them?

I've know people who say they don't like cats, until they spent time with mine & then became converts.   Hate is a very strong reaction.  Often there is a story behind the reason.   Was his comment directed at your cats while you discussed the windows?  :(

No, it was when we were looking at the mansion he's renovating and I commented that animals or cats could get in under the porch

Maybe he's allergic?

Nope, I asked that before he came over to my house

Even so I would say he is out of the picture.  Before we had kids my cousin got married to a woman who had a cat.  It turned out my cousin was very allergic to the cat & my mother was complaining to Keith & me that she should give up the cat.  She looked at Keith & said "you would do it for Jane".  After he replied no she expected me to be upset, except I said I wouldn't either.  She just shook her head at us while we laughed.

Yup.  I'm actually very glad I found this out now.

The rest of the day was beautiful.  Between being distracted and Spring Fever over the weather 85 degrees!  I got nothing done.  tomorrow is going to be insane.  Lots of things going on, some at the same time.  I will definitely need to focus tomorrow.

Time-Warner cable is getting ready to reallign their entire digital cable service, and my cable box has been out of service all day today. So, I had to watch ONE LIFE TO LIVE "live" meaning I had to suffer through all of those dreadful teenaged angst storylines. What a way to end my experience with ONE LIFE TO LIVE!

I'm guessing you have a combo cable box/DVR drive?  If so, you should still be able to watch the shows on that are saved to the DVR drive even while TWC is realigning their channel lineup.  I hope that your box is not kaput.

Cute, "Deer" B.  The deer don't bother my plants once the snow is gone and they can find food.

Do you suppose telling someone with 4 kids that the area under the front porch with metal bars on it would be a good place to store kids could lead that person to say "I hate cats"
