Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not randy and had no stories, and now it is time for you to post until the randy cows come home.

Topic of the Day:

The Boy Friend

Good morning, all! After all the drugs around 7 last night, i woke around 5 am and decided to get up around 5:45. It's 6:30, i'm bathed, dressed and on my second cup of coffee. To those who asked about whether SOUTH PACIFIC was live or prereorded, you clearly didn't read my post about the bus passing all of the broadcasting trucks lined up along 65th Street. I suspect they were using the matinee as a dress rehearsal. Since the Aug 18 broadcast date was given two months ago, I suspect that a lot of the enthusiastic audience purchased tickets then to be there for the big event. It's also one of the last chances to see Kelli and Paolo before the run ended, and at that time it was believed that Matthew Morrison would return to play Cable.
DR edisaurus, I believe you saw William Michals as beBeque, and I don't know if he put in an appearance as an ensemble person or not; he's usually the replacement deBeque only.
Enough carping. I made sure it was taping and went to bed. I'll check the videocassette later, and if I need to rerecord it, I've got two more dates befofre next Monday.
This morning I have the McGlinnventory at 9 am, followed by an editing session with Mr Skip Kennon, composer extraordinaire, at 1. I haven't seen him in about a month so it will be nice to catch up.
DR Laura, the kittens are adorable as always, and the photos make me want to take one of them home, but then I remember things like litter boxes, vet, feeding them, and change my mind.

TOD:
The Boy Friend: I cannot believe all of Ken Russell's films aren't on DVD!
Prospero's Books: I cannot believe more of Peter Greenaway isn't on DVD, although I'm not a huge fan of his nor of Michael Nyman's soundtracks
The Uninvited: one of the best ghost movies ever and "Stella By Starlight!"
Advance to the Rear: there's a lot of enthusiasm for this comedy that I cannot understand from what I saw; the bootleg appears to be cut, the sound is lousy, and it makes little sense
Finder's Keepers: one of Richard Lester's last films, sort of a cross between "Hail the Conquering Hero" and Joe Orton's "Loot" and I can't believe all of his films aren't on DVD!
Handle With Care: I loved this film in the 1970s, and the concept of everyone hiding real identity behind their radio personas

Well, idiot that I am, I managed to completely forget about SOUTH PACIFIC last night. It wasn't until I was half way through the delightfully ridiculous NAUGHTY BUT NICE (with Dick Powell and Ann Sheridan and many, many others) that I remembered that SP was being broadcast. Oh, well--I have another chance to forget about it on Sunday...
I did take a peek at it, though and yes, the television direction was incompetent. A wonderful little moment such as Cable laying eyes on Liat for the first time was marred by a clumsy camera shot of Cable (with his back to the camera) blocking Bloody Mary who in turn was blocking Liat. And from what I read on a certain message board, a nice bit of business was missed during the entr'acte because they cut away too late from Alan Alda's intermission chat with Bartlett Sher.
Kirk Browning is sorely missed...

I got a very disturbing email a couple of days ago. Well it didn't seem disturbing then. I thought it was spam. It was from Caesar's palace thanking me for staying there. With an attachment to open re: my bill.
I didn't think anything of it and went to Caesar's real website and opened a file and told them i got spam from their address.
Well imagine my surprise when they say that they actually do have a group room from august 13th under my email address. The person asked for my address and birthdate just to see if it compares.
I still haven't opened the attachment until i see for sure if this address is legit. Although i think now it is. I just wonder what the story is.

Thursday morning greetings! After 2 pretty busy days, I'm going to take it easy today and be rested for my book group to come over tonight to watch THE GROUP - others are bringing refreshments, so all I have to do is make some coffee and put the tea kettle on.
BK expressed all of my sentiments about PBS' SOUTH PACIFIC broadcast - the lack of attention to the orchestra was particularly annoying. During one of the banal intermission segments, Mary Rodgers gushed about the orchestra and then the balanities continued even as we could hear the brilliant entr'acte in the background.

I know, most E and T, my standard MO but life has been nuts -- maybe, just maybe, the dust will settle. And I'm a little gun shy to come on this here site because my Norton anti-virus is still flashing the message each time I try to visit that this here site is "Warning: This Site Is Unsafe" -- it is now showing 6 instead of the former 4 -- so the unseemly bug threat is growing. Why is it doing this?

Nice to see you, too, DR Edi. Boo-Key is well. He's semi-started his new job as technical director at the Prescott Fine Arts Theatre -- I say semi because his placement is through AmeriCorps (what they call the domestic Peace Corps cause you serve in the US and not abroad) and their funding cycle for his position doesn't start til Oct. 1. But he's already giving some hours to work on the season opener on their set, lighting and sound. The continuation of the Caesar's Palace story. The rep asked for my address and birthdate to compare it to the person who registered under my email. It didn't match and so she took my email off that account so nobody would bother me again.

I was quite thrilled with the broadcast of "South Pacific" last night. As some of you may remember, I saw the national tour company here in San Francisco last fall.
The production last night had exactly what the tour company lacked: A vibrant Nellie Forbush and a strong believable Emile deBecque! I was absolutely mesmerized by their assured performances. O'Hara was a revelation as Nellie...hitting all the right notes in reaction, dialogue and, of course, music. The chemistry was palpable between her and Szot.
As I opined after seeing the national tour, I was really disappointed that an understudy was doing deBecque in the performance I saw. He and "star" Carmen Cusack (?) had zero chemistry, awkward blocking and never related to one another in a believable way. It left a huge hole in the show as the rest of it was splendid in every way.
I don't know what I expected from Danny Burstein. I knew he was nominated for the Tony. What I didn't expect was another revelation. His Luther Billis is EXTRAordinary. All the timing and perfection of character, nuance, reactions to other players. It was a joy to behold. The touring company's Luther is very good....but NOT on the level of Burstein.
I was a bit put off by Andrew Sarmonsky's Joe Cable. He's a tall, good-looking young guy. And doesn't he "just" know it. His Cable swaggers and glares and ignores activity around him. He has a really sweet tenor, though....but tends to over-enunciate his vowels -- primarily anything that stars with "e" and ends with "r". On the plus side, he was extremely convincing in the 2nd act as a guy with malaria. I did not really care for his bit of activity with Billis at the end of the "Bali Hai" number...when he basically yanked Billis around and nearly put a wrestling hold on him. Too-too much...and jarring instead of effective. Some of what he did seemed improvised instead of something he does daily during regular performances.
I have to say I thought the touring company's Anderson Davis was a far more accessible, likable and equally talented Joe Cable. When deBecque radioed that his friend Joe Cable had died, it was sob-inducing in the live production I saw. Last night, I was only sad.
I thought Loretta Ables Sayre was another revelation as Bloody Mary. The one I saw in S.F. was fun..she was built, and moved around, like a Sumo wrestler. But Sayre was wholly a new creation for me -- Mary was real. She drew emotional responses...and seeing Sayre on TV, in closeup, probably had a lot more to do with how I perceived the character. Her vocals were superb...and the "Happy Talk" scene was extraordinary (and deserved the cheers/applause from the audience). In the "Bali Hai" number, she was singing to Cable (who ignored her, seemingly). I prefer the magic generated in the film during this number....Cable completely captivated as Mary sings her magical turne. In the touring company, Cable sat on a box during the entire number...turned away from the audience. At least the Lincoln Center production didn't make "that" mistake.
Any time something like this is broacast on television, I am amazed, delighted and thrilled. I hope others took something positive from the experience...
I'm certain the show was broadcast live on the east coast...and that we on the left coast saw a recording of it. Audio problems happen often in live theater. They are regrettable, but they happen. This sort of thing used to happen on live TV and we got used to it, understanding that "s**t happens.
I did not think Alan Alda (or Mary Rodgers or Alice Hammerstein) brought much to the proceedings at all.

I've had a bit of lunch and a good three hours at the McGlinnventory. Today I went through about six pages of Full Score inventory, marking publisher info, whether the score was cloth or paper bound and marking the condition. Next Wednesday, I'll finish up the last page of the full scores and go on to the composer editions, marking ISBNs, condition, publisher, etc. Thursday next, I can hopefully annotate the miniature scores so i can then begin pricing everything for auction.

I can only echo what MR BK and so many others have already written today.
I got home from BBB last night about 11:30 - and was looking around....and I saw that SP would be (re) broadcast on the Bloomington PBS station at 1 a.m. - and I tuned in.
It was like seeing the show for the first time.....and the acting really pointed up how deficient the movie is in that department. I hope this DVD becomes the touchstone for the show.
Kelli O'Hara and Paulo Szot gave performances that were fresh and interesting and both were vital and alive human beings! Szot is super sexy and his costumes were great.
Reinventing the roles and making them their own but NOT distorting the original material......Danny Burstein as Billis (I hate Ray Walston in the movie....HATE him, as I do in most of his movies) - and Loretta Ables Sayre as Bloody Mary - WOW!
I liked everyone in the show down to the smallest role....with one exception. Whose boyfriend is Cable? He is an embarrassment, although the singing is good.... Oh well.....
I want the DVD - SP is my favorite R/H show - although of course the camera work does have some problems.
-
And it was fun to see the guys who do the FIVE MINUTES TILL CURTAIN blog onstage in their roles!

-
It is very quiet with only two kittens running like mad around here.
-
Lovely kitten photos, DR LAURA....and Jack certainly knows how to pose for his headshot.
-
I also want MONDO TEENAGE on DVD - that was some clip, DR EDISAURUS.
And YES, Mr Van Dyke Parks did compose music for THE COMPANY.....if you haven't seen it, grab a copy....and the CD has a lot of VDP on it too, I think.
-
The whole MONDO TEENO film looks like it came straight out of the camera with hardly any editing. There are even flash frames from when the camera stopped rolling. If you can't even bother to edit those out, well...it gives you an idea of the level of their production value.
Yet...some of the British parts were directed by Richard Lester, supposedly, and some of the music was provided by Mike Curb (of the Mike Curb Congregation, I assume).
-
Van Dyke played some of it for us in his living room as he was working on it. He was working on OCIEE NASH at the same time and was in quite a time crunch but managed to deliver a great score for both films!
-
The problem with this TOD is that you think back to films you'd like to see on DVD. Then you have to do a search to see if it is available. A lot of times it's been awhile since I checked on a film and when I look again, ta-da! It's been release on DVD! So now not only do I have to buy it but then there are all those other titles I came across while search that I want, too.
Maybe I need to ignore this topic next time it comes up. At least until I'm working, anyway!
And yes, as some of you surmised, I do indeed miss working on THE CLOSER, for many reasons.
-
It is very quiet with only two kittens running like mad around here.
Which Two kittens are running like Mad?
-
Those kittens are all so cute. It would be hard to choose!

Jack: Have you watched the roadshow version of "South Pacific"? The theatrical "cut" I'd seen over the years made Billis seem like a hammy jerk and he always seemed cartoonish. In the roadshow version I was happy to see there was considerably more nuance in his performance. He's much more tolerable for me in that version...but Walston has never been a favorite anyway.
-
I love Danny Burstein as Billis. Greg was amazed that he also played Aldolpho in THE DROWSY CHAPERONE.

As a laserdisc, the video was near perfection. The film is stunning for its cinematography and production design. I know that there are many people who, like yourself, adore this film, but to be honest, I have never been able to sit all the way through it.
It's my understanding that Marlon Brando, then under contract to Fox, was originally cast in the lead. As the story goes, after the first table read of the script, they took a short break and Brando never returned. He went directly to the airport and took a plane back to New York.
I heard that from director Edward Dmytryk, who was also working at Fox at the time.

Years ago our one of our dogs knocked me down the stairs. As I fell my little toe caught in the stair rail. Barber tomorrow at 9:30, followed by a trip to the post office at Rockefeller Center and then to Toyland.

OOOOoooohhhh! That sounds great! Is it "mom friendly"? (Would an 80 year old lady like it?)
Maybe you should watch the fantastic Almodovar film and decide.
Oh, I saw it, years ago. Just don't know what the show would be like...

I assume it's close to the film. I believe the score is by Dave Yazbeck who did FULL MONTY and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS.

Time to watch some 1940's musicals.

I hate clinic day. I always feel guilty.
I know what you mean.

I would like to see Disney take the plunge and release Song Of The South uncut. I know it is a little racist and I felt that way when I saw it on it last theatrical release in the 80's (?) But it is a film of its time and should be looked as such.
-
I also missed most of the first act of South Pacific. I have to agree that the camera work was terrible, but that is because I guess they really didn't have enough technically rehearsal. They also could have had a better curtain call without the credits rolling, This was PBS they didn't have to rush it for the news hour.

No, but they have to finish before 11 o'clock to avoid union overtime.

PBS does have restrictions over how long the credits can be, so that's why they were rolling so fast!

When I saw ADVANCE TO THE REAR in a theater when I was young; I enjoyed it so much that I went out and bought the book, THE COMPANY OF COWARDS. The book was nothing like the movie, and it was far from funny. That day I learned that it is better to read it from the library, until you know for sure what you are getting.

DR Jennifer vibes you don't have any problems as a result of the strange case of Caesar's Palace & your email!!!
I finally opened the attachment since it wasn't spam (since the person checking out at Caesar's Palace paid but gave my email address). And the bill was paid, but the person had my exact name. It had her address in Florida on the bill. Weird.

Well, I told myself I wouldn't do this again, but somebody has to do some posting.

So, I guess that person will be me.

I guess our two sonic booms the other day made the national news.

Some state buildings consdered closing for the day until they found out what caused the big explosions.

I guess I had totally forgotten how unsettling they can be.
-
Of course, think of the poor float plane pilot who almost got himself shot down over Seattle.
-
We actually had rain this morning. And just a week ago it was 96 degrees.

I wasn't too worried by the rain this morning; September is usually the nicest month of the year in the Northwest.

I don't think I have any plans for the weekend.

BK, did you ever answer my question about whether or not you pfefer to shower in the dark?
-
A very belated "Good morning, all."

TOD: I agree with George on "At Long Last Love," but even more than that, I'd love to get a copy of "Sun Valley Serenade" with Glenn Miller's soundtrack in glorious stereo. Great, great music, from the title tune to "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" with the Nicholas Brothers and Dorothy Dandridge. Silly performances from Sonja Henie and John Payne, and bad mugging from Milton Berle.
-
After I saw PSYCHO for the first time, I went years where I had to have the bathroom door locked before I could take a shower. Having cats cured me of that. Now I can't even close the door to go to the bathroom.

I loved the film version of "Women on the Verge ..." I think it was the first time I remember seeing Antonio Banderas. I just hope the musical is anywhere near as funny as the film. That cast sounds wonderful.

Cilla I'm glad your arm is improving.
Years ago our one of our dogs knocked me down the stairs. As I fell my little toe caught in the stair rail. I also twisted my arm terribly and while I was dealing with the pain in my arm I was thinking once it subsided I was really going to notice the pain in the broken toe. The arm was greatly improved the next day while the toe took years to recover.
It is nice to read Jon is back to school & about his restoration work. :)
I broke my Big toe playing sand volleyball one time. It took a long time to heal.
My arm is much better today I'm very glad

Well, we have cleared the low post hurdle.
G'night!

Some state buildings consdered closing for the day until they found out what caused the big explosions.
I figured it was connected to the president being in Seattle. Seems I'm correct.
the sonic boom that occurred around 2pm Thursday came from two military fighter jets dispatched from Portland after the pilot of a spotted aircraft violated presidential airspace restrictions in lieu of Obama’s visit to Seattle for a campaign fund raising event for Sen. Patty Murray.

Have you done a google search for your name and the town in Florida to see if maybe she really has your name and just made up the email address? If it's just your name @gmail.com, that would be an easy thing to make up

I did Cilla & think I found her.

This has been the busiest and craziest week I've had in ages and ages. I tend to rise to the occasion and have managed to get everything done so far. I have a lot to do before I go to bed tonight, but it's been a very long day so I'm taking a break. I called Paul and took him out to dinner. It was the first time I've seen him since I got back from Toronto.
-
Tomorrow night a couple friends will be in town and we will have dinner. Then it's work all weekend. I can't believe what I accomplish when I have no time to procrastinate
-
TCB - yes, I shower in the dark - ever since seeing Psycho I will not have light on in the bathroom when I shower.
I did see Morrison as Cable and really didn't like him, for most of the same reasons I didn't like the guy last night - maybe that was the concept of the character for this production, but I found it awful both times.
-
Had fun rehearsals with Jason and Damon - so great to hear Jason sing these songs, and Damon is terrific. Lesli couldn't make it, which means she's on her own until the Monday before the show - she promises me she'll know everything and will rehearse as long as necessary
-
I saw most of South Pacific last night, but recorded it, so I can watch it over the weekend. I thought the cast was great! The guy playing Lt. Cable was better than I when I saw him live, believe it or not! He was using a weird voice that he seemed to have toned down last night.

This morning was wonderful, I drove to Omaha for an immigration interview with a client. He came here on a visitor visa with his mom when he was only about 2-3 years old and never left. His dad (a permanent resident) filed for him to become a resident about 7 years ago and now a visa is available. The fun part is they thought he had to go back to Mexico and try to go through the consulate - a complicated procedure with no guarantee he would be allowed back in- but when they came to me for help, I knew a way that he didn't need to do that. Today, at 22 years old and a college student wanting to become a middle school math teacher, my client became a lawful permanent resident. His parents were both there for the interview. They were all SOOOO nervous, which made it even more joyful when he got the approval.
He is a great kid. Never been in trouble, smart, wants to do good things with his life. Now he can. This makes all the craziness and the insanity worth while.
-
TCB - yes, I shower in the dark - ever since seeing Psycho I will not have light on in the bathroom when I shower.
Considering how many people still have issues showering I'm glad I never saw the movie. As it is a barking dog while showering when home alone can be unnerving. ;D
-
I saw Psycho and have no problem showering at home. There are some hotel room showers that used to bother me, but not so much anymore. I don't think I've ever taken a shower in the dark....hmmm

It has gotten very hot and humid again.

We may have storms tonight

I really enjoyed South Pacific last night. It was especially fun to see Danny Burstein. Thanks to DR Elmore, Jon and I were part of the group that dined with him after Drowsy Chaperone a few years ago. Thanks DR Elmore! Not only is he increadibly talented, he's a really great guy. I've had fun following his career since then.

I was just the group leader and I really had no idea Danny would join us and I'm happy he did. He's such a mensch. I think he likes his friends and their friends, and has a real interest in people. I am really looking forward to WOMEN ON THE VERGE.

Earlier today I looked like a woman on the verge....I think three people told me to breathe, lol

Then Shelly and I had lunch. I had no packages or any mail whatsoever, which was more than a little surprising, and then I came home to the great news that our next release's packaging has been approved and we're good to go. So, we'll announce here on Saturday night, and even though I am often surprised at the lack of interest in some of our soundtrack titles, take my word for it - you will not want to miss out on this. a) it's an absolutely brilliant score. b) its composer is one of the greats. c) it will be the definitive release of this music - the first time on CD release of the original LP program (running about 41 minutes) and then the complete score in unbelievable sound - it runs close to eighty minutes - a two CD set for a one CD price.

Woo and Hoo, my job is done here

We just finished watching MAD MEN, Season 2.
The story is moving along much better now.

I ate too much and didn't walk today. This is not the way to lose weight and tomorrow I'm meeting a friend for lunch at the Indian restaurant.
Instead of walking I had a morning appointment with the specialist to discuss how to stop my bones from breaking. This afternoon I called the insurance company to send forms for my doctor to fill out for pre-approval on a very expensive mediation. If approved I will then have the privilege of giving myself an injection every morning for the next two years. If not approved I can give up eating and lose those extra pounds. ;)
-
I've been reading the info on the med-can't wait to travel with it. The least of my problems is that is can't go through the x-ray machine. The biggest problem is it must be kept refrigerated. It comes with a 9x7x5 soft carry on container with ice packs to keep the medicine cold, but only up to ten hours. ??? What if I can't get a room with a refrigerator & freezer!
-
Yikes. I'm glad I just have a simple pill, Jane.
-
I have plenty of those Laura. ::)
-
...And, to all a goodnight...
-
It has gotten very hot and humid again.
Same here. I feel like I'm melting every time I walk out the door. And then we did swing tonight in dance class, so I worked up a sweat only to go outside and sweat some more. Ugh.
-
I'm not getting neutered today!
I'm not either. What a reason to celebrate!
-
With that, I feel free to bid all a good night.

Did I miss something? Is "I'm not getting neutered today" an homage to Getting Married Today, and I missed the set-up somewhere?

Cilla and Larry - I recall that Maureen Silliman was with our group at Joe Allen's that night, too, and I think Lenny Wolpe as well.

Six of my book club girlfriends came over tonight to watch THE GROUP, a DVD I now own thanks to DR Elmore. One of them brought a fantastic fruit cobbler. It was so nice to see my friends.

LOL That's exactly what was going through my mind when I read DR Laura writing about the boys getting neutered today and all I could think was "And I'm not getting neutered today" Wondered who would catch the reference :)
-

Yes they were! It was great. I only mentioned Danny because of South Pacific

The boys are getting neutered today. The girls are too small.
DR FJL This is what got my mind on that track...I immediately imagined the girl kitties running around singing "And I'm not getting Neutered today"....it's been a long day

My client was terrified of having to go to Mexico. He's been here all his life and has no recollection of Mexico. He knows about the violence now and did not want to go there at all. The look on his face as the realization sunk in that he didn't have to leave the country, that he's now totally legal and that he can pursue his dream was priceless. The agent stood up, shook his hand, welcomed him and said he'd see him in 5 years when his citizenship could be approved. Moments like that make all the frustration and craziness worth it.

Whew! I had a Vixmom kind of day....not the cat who got spayed, but the human Vixmom who works so hard. I don't know how you do it every day, my friend....time to get some rest. One more of these this week....

I didn't realize this was part of AmericCorps. Will he spend the entire time in his hometown? Not a bad gig. :)
[/quote]
Yes, DR Jane, it should be a nice gig for him. He will be working with the theatre the entire one-year term. He and his room mate (one of his best buddies from high school) just moved into the bachelor pad this past weekend.
-
Nice story about your client, DR Cilla.
-
I went to the gal who's editing the clip reel for the JMK event in November - we went through everything, made choices, and now she'll assemble what in essence will be two ten-minute sequences. I came home about nine and finally did my mile and a half jog. I watched the rest of act one of South Pacific.

I remember seeing this in the theater with my sister when we lived in Colorado, when I was between 7 and 10 years old. That movie scared me! :o I was too young to realize that it was supposed to be funny.

Today was a very long day. I went to work, and at around noon-fifteen-ish, we had our annual summer potluck (I brought the banana bread muffins and chocolate chip cookies that I made last night). We had hot dogs, hamburgers and Boca burgers, salads, chips, lots of desserts and a good time was had by all. One of our computer people, Donna, is getting married on Saturday, so there was also a cake for her. Her fiance (I forget his name) was there also and was introduced to the staff.
-
After that, it was nothing but invoicing! Today was the cut-off to get invoices paid in our computer and I invoiced until 10:00 pm...with appropriate bathroom breaks. ;) The computer department has it set up for all the library computers to automatically turn off at 10 pm to save electricity (if someone is working late, all you have to do is turn your computer back on, but you can't stop it from turning off, so you'd better make sure that everything is saved).
-
Anyway, I was almost done with the invoices that I had to do when the message "Your computer will turn off in five minutes" popped up. I calmly (but quickly) finished the invoice that I was working on and then was actually able to finish the very last two invoice that needed to be done this month! I closed all my applications, cleared the cache of my browser, filled in my electronic time sheet and about 15 seconds later, my computer automatically shut off. It timed out perfectly! I still had to file the paper copies, which took about 15 minutes, and then I was officially done. That's the latest that I've stayed at work in a very long time.
