Title: BROWNIES
Post by: bk on January 26, 2011, 12:26:04 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of brownies, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently eating brownies and wondering why there's no dessert called redies or yellowies.

Speaking of Alet Taylor (BK mentioned her in his notes), I viewed the Kaye Ballard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JdC0UXmd6o) clip that John G. posted yesterday and the other parts of that whole show.  That led me to Kaye singing "Sing For Your Supper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AImz5R8i6YY)" with Donna McKechnie and Roberta Peters.  That led me to the same song sung by Renee Fleming, Marilyn Horne and Frederica von Stade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64c0ul7uDaQ&feature=related) and that led me to the song sung by Rebecca Luker, Debbie Shapiro Gravitte and Christine Ebersole (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laE3dcf_dDw) and THAT (finally...my original point) led me to "Any Old Place With You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojVQiQL3Too)" sung by Stanley Mathis, who dances with (although she doesn't sing) Alet Oury...now known as Alet Taylor! :D

RE: Bonus material on DVDs...

If a movie is a classic (and I mean a true classic) I will watch the bonus material unless I'm forewarned that it's useless or dull.  But for recent films, I usually skip.  For the most part, the deleted scenes I have watched turned out to be wisely deleted in the first place.

Something is still getting all jiggy with my connection to HHW. I may have to reboot the whole computer.

On DVD extras: I sometimes like them if I see that the end result was better and how it was made better. I would watch the alternate ending to "Broadcast News," for example, because the ending I know from the original release is perfect and knowing how the movie maker got there can be a help. Especially since I don't like to do a lot of re-writing. It shows me that it can be necessary.

I watched the movie "Cry-Baby" last night before going to bed. In my dreams, the director, John Waters, was having trouble with his ending and they shot ending after ending, none of which worked. I was somehow involved in the production and at one point, after looking at all these endings, DR Elmore appeared and announced it was his dream. That's when I woke up. So, I hope you found the right ending, DR Elmore.

Good morning, all! Thanks to an unsettling email from California last night I hardly slept. I was a night of tossing, turning, thoughts of what to write, a few vague dreams. Sometime after 2am I fell asleep, to be wide awake around 4. I think I was awake unti the sun rose before passing out again, and when I looked up it was 9:15. So, I have to spend my day drafting a short repl, acknowledging the email's receipt. answering a few questions and promising a longer response to follow in a few days when I have more cogent thoughts.  This seems a smarter plan than my initial thought last night of "Drop dead," although my frustration with one of my jobs has a lot to do with my initial reaction.

So, that will be some of my day. I have to be at City Center tonight at 6pm for a meeting with Rob Berman abpout WHERE'S CHARLEY? for Encores. I will fill the time fretting about the email and the missing check from my other major job and how it's affecting my health insurance.

I seldom watch DVD extras on new films, but if a classic has a retrospective documentary with interviews from the original participants, I'll watch it.

On new movies, I'll watch outtakes and alternate endings, if there are any.

That sounds like fun. I saw about 14 years ago in Sarasota in concert with Michael Maguire, who won a Tony for Les Miz and hasn't really done much since, has he? Still, they were good and the evening was fun, though it was more of a cabaret act in a theater that seated 1,100 or so.

Re: DVD extras

For oldies I like to see the trailer and (usually) enjoy a commentary if the participant is truly knowledgeable and/or the original cast/crew are involved.

For newer movies commentary can sometimes be nice. It just depends on the film. For instance a commentary on an obscure independently made film would be much more interesting to me then a commentary on a blockbuster freaturing A list stars.

Outakes would be welcome on oldies or new films...those are always fun.

Bollywood movies rarely have any interesting extras, sadly. New films will usually throw in a "making of" extra which is generally the director and the stars talking about how this was the best movie they have ever made and how the role was challenging and yada yada yada...same thing everytime.

One suprise was an extra that was with a 1950s Bollywood film DVD. The film was about an English woman who falls in love with an Indian man. The extra was a recent on camera interview with the English actress (she had only made a handful of films, so she was not at all well known). It was a fascinating look at making an Indian film from her perspective.

My questions for ask BK Day.

How much do you rely on audience response of your stage work when it tweeking and shaping it?

First off, congrats on the reading.  If something is really obviously not landing with an audience I usually know that instantly and change it as quickly as I can.  If I feel it's an actor problem and that something isn't being delivered correctly, I'll wait until I hear it done the way I want - if it still doesn't land, I change it.  I talk about this stuff a lot in the book.  I am rarely stubborn about anything, but sometimes I just feel that something can work if I tinker with staging and delivery and sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong.  But if audiences are clearly not getting something or clearly restless I can usually see why and fix or attempt to fix.

I talk about the very first public staged reading of The Brain, where the Kritzerland designer came up to me and said it was the most perfect reading he'd ever seen and to not change a thing.  I just looked at him, thanked him, and said "Are you insane?"  Because after two performances I knew that one character had to undergo a complete metamorphosis, another character had to have major adjustments, and another character was playing the same joke in every single scene.  All that stuff changed instantly.  One song was clearly horrible (the original Donna and Rod song was a duet and very 50s and blechhh).  Days before we actually did the reading I knew that Zubrick didn't have the right song and David Wechter and I just looked at the character and figured out what it needed to be about, and then I wrote All About Men in about twelve minutes, in it went, and it killed from the beginning.

So, I'm actually willing to do whatever needs to be done.  That said, audiences can be deceiving.  For What If, we had amazing audience reaction at almost every performance, but there were some where the audience just sat there - well, that happens and you can't go rewrite your show because some audience had a bad day or a bad dinner or was drunk.  That happens at every B'way show, including the biggest hits.  In the end, though, it's your show and you have to be true to your intentions while trying to make it appeal.

To pontificate further - I've seen the creators of shows be incredibly stubborn about changes to the detriment of their show.  That happened most recently with Leap of Faith.  If everyone, and I mean everyone is telling you something doesn't work, change it - it's really simple - IT DOESN'T WORK.  In Leap of Faith the director/choreographer had a concept of Agnes de Mille-like segues between scenes and an opening that was the same.  Everyone hated it.  Everyone.  He would not change it.  If David Merrick were his producer he would have changed it or he would have been replaced.

Other shows the same story.  The stubbornness is shocking.  And you cannot be lulled into a false sense of greatness by friends who see the reading - they just want to be positive and supportive and that's the single most harmful thing that happens at these readings.  The necessary changes aren't made because people are hooting and hollering.  I remember seeing the second reading of Wicked, some of which I liked and some of which I didn't.  When I saw Stephen Schwartz after I accentuated the positive and he said "I'm thrilled you liked it, but I want to know what you didn't like.  Send me notes." Which I did.

I was going to actually mention that the other day.  It seemed to me that they didn't know how to push the movie when it first came out and before it became a hit so that clip of Joan Cusack running through the news studio was all that was initially played on the talk shows.  It made the movie look like it was directed by Zemeckis.

A Question for BK...when you (or anyone, for that matter) get asked for notes, do you get paid or do you do it as a professional courtesy?

No, it's a courtesy.  If someone is brought on to doctor a show, however, they end up with a royalty position in the show.

I had great news this morning, that a Kritzerland project that I thought would take quite a while to be approved (it involves a studio that has a VERY slow approvals process) has been approved and it only took a week, which is totally amazing.  So, that becomes our next release.

Has anyone seen IFC's homage to my own home town, "Portlandia"?  Betsy and I watched a DVR'd episode last night.  A bit pretentious, but it had some very funny bits, our favorite being the skit with the yuppie couple at the restaurant wanting personal information on the chicken they were about to eat.  :)

Ok. Good enough news for now. A steroid shot and a recheck in a month to see if it helps.

Do you know what steroid they used?

Our Bosco received shots for years with great success.  Granted she eventually got diabetes from them but had she not had the shots we wouldn't have had her for all those extra years.  Since I don't remember the official name of what she had I can't say for sure it was exactly what Joshie has.  It was similar.

It must have been a truly horrifying e-mail.  Is MBarnum coming to visit?

Two major early scores by a great film composer.

We're trying to decide whether to release the next cast album this coming Monday or to wait and announce the cast album and the soundtrack at one time.  I think we'll probably do that because for people who want both they save money on shipping.

Then I came home and I've now written a total of fourteen pages today, and I think I'm going to go for the gold and come home right after rehearsal and see if I can finish - if not finish, then at least get to the last few pages.  I'm totally in the finishing mode, though, because it's just pouring out of me.  That happened with the last Hofstetter book and with my memoir.  My final day of writing on each of those was intense - 25 pages on the Hofstetter, and about forty on the memoir.  So, we shall see.

After the meeting, Josh and I had a nice talk about various and sundry things before we walked out into the snow, he to the RR subway and me to Eighth Avenue.I got tired of waitign for a bus and grabbed a cab. I had a great taxi driver who was a lot of fun and a very safe driver. I will have some chicken soup and settle in for the evening.

So "Baby It's You" is taking the Broadhurst and "Born Yesterday" is taking the Cort Theater, so every Broadway theater which had a closing in January is now filled with another show, booked up until April.  So when it comes to millions upon millions to invest in new shows to replace shows that lost millions, it begs the question - where is all this investment money coming from?

I hope DR KevinH is safe and sound - I've been reading reports of downed trees and wires and power outages in and around the DC area.

It ain't comin' from me!

DR Laura has her Joshie and I have mine, my adopted son, who will be the star orchestrator of the next generation. He's mighty talented.

He's looking for a new apartment and he has till March 1. This is our next project.

Are there still apartments in your building available?

He cannot afford this building.

For those DRs who do not watch "American Idol", the last five minutes of tonight's episode are worth watching.

It's actually one of their tear-jerker segments. And, for once, I think the producers finally figured out how not to make it seem exploitative.

Good grief!  I've been on the phone for about 1 1/2 hours.  It's been a long time since I've done that.

Did we know you were working on two writing projects or have I not been paying that close attention?

I had a good work session with The Singer.  I'd written fourteen pages or before leaving.  I got home and I had only the final chapter to do.  And eight or nine pages later - I finished.  I'm totally exhausted - twenty-three pages total today.  I'm sure I'll have some smoothing out to do and some futzing and fixing to do, but I got it done and I'm hoping it's a good, satisfying ending.

Actually, that is not all....I just finished watching this Rory Calhoun movie on Netflix streaming, a film I had never even heard of.

It was quite good and it had music by Albert Glasser (however, his music really did not fit this film very well)

I don't know if anyone here noticed or not, but two of THE UNTOUCHABLES died this month, within the last two weeks, in fact.
