I like Dawn Upshaw.  I just ordered a "very good" used copy of her "Knoxville" CD...and it was quite inexpensive.  I should get it very soon. :)

We had an interesting event at home last night.

My wife was cooking dinner, and all of a sudden, the toaster oven exploded.

 :o

Broken glass all over the place.

 :'(

Thankfully, nobody was nearby, but then we had to do the clean-up.

 :(

Afterward, we went out and and bought a new toaster oven.

What a fun Saturday night!

A Word of Warning: Don't use aluminum foil when you're cooking in your microwave or toaster oven.

Thanks for the advice, Druxy. I don't have a microwave and won't get one because of the bird (not compatible). But I was considering a toaster oven at some point.

RE: the notes and the fried/friend thing.  I have seen that type of mistake in books before. In a way it's the hardest type of mistake to find. Since obviously spellcheck won't find it. Glad you found it!

because of the length of Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with Dawn Upshaw (15+ minutes) you cannot download it as a single track and therefore need to buy the complete album so I will it a try.
Title: Re: KNOXVILLE: SUMMER OF 1915
Post by: elmore3003 on March 06, 2011, 06:54:02 AM
Good morning, all! I slept late, much later than I intended, so I guess I needed the rest. I do remember that my last dream was about Goodspeed, although I have no idea what the musical was and I have no idea who any of the musical staff were. Half the dream seemed to be about tracking down a missing staff person and preparing for an orchestra rehearsal, the other half seemed to be about Emily Loesser and me waiting for a bus into a city to do some shopping.

I didn't get to the laundry as I had intened this morning, but now it's too late to begin it. I have to go through the orchestra piano book for WHERE'S CHARLEY? today with the full scores and check for errors. Later, I may stop down at the laundromat and see how heavy the crowd is.

I, too, love the Dawn Upshaw recording of "Knoxville: Summer of 1915," a perfect synthesis of material and singer. I think a lot has to do with the purity of her voice. Leontyne Price, a Samuel Barber favorite, sounds too mature and plummy, and other singers, trying to sound pure and innocent, end up sounding arch and affected. I think the entire album, with the exception of the "Mirabai Songs," quite wonderful. The Menotti aria goes a long way to restore him to a higher tier of composers than current opinion has placed him, and the Stravinsky scene from THE RAKE'S PROGRESS is one of my favorite moments in opera.

More coffee.

DR cillaliz, I either missed the fact or didn't realize the festival was for local film makers! I was ready to ask what new films you saw that you thought would be 2012 box office hits.  This sounds like a lot of fun. The newspaper article was quite entertaining

One of my favorite parts of the festival is seeing the pride of the families and friends of the filmmakers at seeing the films on the big screen. You tube is fine, but there's nothing like the big screen in a dark theater

As is true with all of us here on HHW - the more I get done, the more I have to do.

The 50th Anniversary Committee - with 4 people on it - gets a lot done.....until the other 12 people who did NOT want to be on it, tell us what we SHOULD do.  I just give the report and then tune out while they offer "suggestions", although when they are done, I usually say:  "Great, you can be in charge of that."   And then it doesn't seem to be such a great idea to them.

I can be very mean at Board Meetings - BUT everyone knows exactly how I feel about EVERYTHING!  And it helps being Vice President (for life, apparently) and having a President that I am sure will support me.

No, it's the people who offer suggestions after they haven't had anything to do with it who are the Butts.   Or the people who don't attend any meetings and they tell you that you can't do what everyone who has attended every meeting has agreed to do

I think what irritated me the most last night was that we had done everything, printed the ballots, made the ballot boxes and even had one performance vote when he came in and tried to change the rules....not going to happen.  Luckily there were enough of our group in attendance that I was able to get agreement from others that I didn't have to listen to him and go ahead with the voting

I went dwn to the laundromat and put the laundry into the washers.

On Tuesday morning, I have to run down to my health insurance office sat the very lower tip of Manhattan and pay this month's insurance. Last Tuesday, the Institute added to the injury of halting the project the injury of not paying our invoices. I don't even know if the jerk in charge will pay us this week, and on Tuesday, whether or not we have been paid, I have to deliver a check to Health Plan of New York or I lose my insurance. I could have mailed the payment last week, but now it's too late.

So, I have to do laundry today, whether I want to or not. Tomorrow I'm committed to Encores! and WHERE'S CHARLEY?

"Can" isn't the same as "will." We used to feed our dog chocolate treats all the time when I was growing up and it had no effect on him. He lived 17 years. Now I hear it's poisonous to dogs.

According to the directions for the new toaster oven we bought last night, the foil greatly increases the heat..and, I assume, the glass couldn't take it.

DR George I was curious what the cost of a ticket is in Oregon & looked it up.  I read it is $90.  Where does your friend live as I read the following:
Quote
In Washington, driving while using a cell phone is a secondary offense, meaning police can only ticket drivers for talking on their cell phones once they've pulled them over for speeding or another traffic violation.

Of course the cost could have gone up and the rules changed.

DR JOHN G - microwaves are not compatible with birds?  I am not aware of this.  Details please.
Can be fatal to our fine-feathered friends.  So can cooking with nonstick cookware.

Abby has lived in the kitchen for about five years.....doesn't seem to be suffering.....oh dear.
"Can" isn't the same as "will." We used to feed our dog chocolate treats all the time when I was growing up and it had no effect on him. He lived 17 years. Now I hear it's poisonous to dogs.

Not all dogs get sick or die from it, enough that it is a no no.  You were very lucky.

Really glad to be going to work tomorrow.  Where life is normal and real .

I don't know what it is about living at the beach, but it seems to make people do things they should not do.
My landlord and many other people have told me to relax, this is the beach, flow with it.

I like things with more order and control.   Next weekend is the big St Patrick's Day Parade.  I was here last year and things get pretty wild and happy.   I do remember that once you park your car on Friday night, DO NOT MOVE IT, or there is no place to park.

 :)

Sorry DR TCB.  It was just horrible.   I couldn't even watch it all the way through.  Not just because Michael Ball wasn't in it either.  There was no love for the show in those voices.

I've seen Le Miz several times when it came to Tampa and enjoyed it but the last time it came I called it the Karaoke version.  You could tell they were on the road and tired of doing the show.

Same with POTO.  I've seen several very good shows but the one I saw in Ft. Lauderdale was the peak of horrible.  I remember my friends said it was worth the price of the ticket just to see my face when the Phantom sang his first words.  I think my jaw hit the ground.  It was that bad.  Ruined the entire show for me and I could have cared less if they hung the Phantom at the end just to get him off the stage.

Sometimes it's just a bad show.

I have mentioned before that the Artistic Director of one of our theaters is suffering from Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer.  They have basically told him that there is nothing else to be done.  He just finished directing MY NAME IS ASHER LEV, which has been his great desire.  Today his wife, who is a Cilty Councilwoman in Tacoma posted the latest update on Marcus.  It is too long for me to post here, but if you go to my web page at Facebook, I have shared it.  Very touching.

DR TCB, this did not show up on my Facebook page! Have you blocked me?

I sent you the letter.

The halibut and vegetables were deelish.  Then I watched a motion picture I'd TIVOd in high definitions.  Now I'm not sure what's next in terms of how the evening will play out - maybe another motion picture, maybe catching up on some magazine reading, maybe playing on the computer, maybe starting some liner notes.

There was a woman who died of cancer at the young age of 42.

She had three daughters.  All three of them had cancer, one survived.  The two who didn't were only 54 and 63 when they lost their battles.

Each of the three sisters had a daughter who had cancer.  All three, the youngest first at 51, lost their battles.

To be 100% honest, I don't expect to make it out my 60's.  All of my Dad's side of the family passed young.  Mom made it to 89 but I seem to follow Dad's side when it comes to weight, health problems, etc.  Of course, with Mom being an orphan I don't really know how old they lived to be.

That's not being gloomy, that's just the truth.

My flight back was relatively uneventful, however...

-It was a FULL flight. I was sort of hoping they would start asking for "volunteers", but there was still one unsold seat on the plane. Ah, well. ;)
-Of course, since it was a full flight, I ended up having to check my carry-on bag by the time Zone 4 was allowed to board.
-I ended up with a middle seat. The young woman to my right was a good passenger. The man to my left, however, had no sense of "personal space". His right foot, right knee and right arm spent a good amount of the flight on "my" side. ::)

As I was leaving baggage claim, I noticed that an M60 bus pulling up to the stop. I started running, but then the bus pulled forward. Thankfully, the light turned red, the bus stopped, I caught the bus driver's eye, and she opened the door for me. Whew!

And then once I got home, I took a nap. I nice long, very much needed nap.

Two highlights of the conference:

-The first group of the last day started with Auditionee #521. When #530 finished his audition pieces, he re-announced his name and number, and then said, "And today is my birthday!" Well, I just couldn't let that go by without some sort of acknowledgement. I rolled a D7 chord, and then led the room in a very hearty chorus of "Happy Birthday". It was a great way to start the day.

-Later on on Saturday, a young man - #(I wish I could remember) - placed his music binder on the piano. I opened it, and he had taped two Godiva chocolate bars (one caramel-filled, one dark) to his music. "Those are for you." :)

Now that I'm in my 60's the thought is more frighting-lol.  My mother was the oldest to go just shy of her 64th birthday.  I do have one female cousin on that side who is a year and a half older than I am.  I hear from her brother she is fine.  It was the anniversary of her older sister's birthday yesterday.

And in other news...

I'm still quite tired. "It" all caught up with me around 8:00 last night after I got back from dinner. I sat down in a chair in the lobby to check my email, and realized I had nodded off for a few seconds.  So, I walked around the convention center for a bit just to keep myself awake. There were two final receptions last night, and I wanted to make sure to see some folks before we all headed home. I made it to the first reception, and then since the second reception ended up starting later than originally scheduled, I went back to my room to pack my luggage. Well... The next thing I knew, it was 12:30am! I had fallen asleep in the desk chair. Oops! I decided to go head ahead and pop upstairs to the second reception, and, thankfully, there were still a lot of people. I made my rounds, then headed back to my room, and fell asleep. -This time in the bed. ;)

Well I learned that earlier this week, my friend Jamie left her job as editor of the Greencastle Banner-Graphic.....and this is just as we start our big publicity push for our 50th anniversary....and we had mapped out a campaign.  Most distressing that she is gone.....details are sketchy.

HOWEVER.....I learned today that the NEW editor is the OLD editor who is also a big theater fan and a friend of PCPH....so perhaps it is not so bad after all.

We did NOT have a quorum for the meeting, so we just had some discussions - but could not vote on anything.

I did steal one idea from DR JOSE that he talked about last year at a theater celebration he had attended some time before.

DR Danise - I don't like this version nearly as much as I liked the 10th anniversary.  The 3 young pop singers as Cosette, Marius, and Eponine are especially weak.
Fantine was no prize either.  I swear I heard several flat notes from more than one person.

Lea Salonga was Fantine. She is a fantastic singer. How could they do better than her for Fantine?

Have not watched the show yet but am looking forward to it.  The one who sticks out for me is the Jonas brother.

I have mentioned before that the Artistic Director of one of our theaters is suffering from Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer.  They have bbasically told him that there is nothing else to be done.

I actually just read it -- my prayers and VIBES for Marcus, his wife and all who love them

That law has been changed in Washington.

He lives in Tacoma and was on I-5.  And talking on your cell phone is now a first offense...and he was speeding.  I spoke with him today...he has learned his lesson.

Now, some sleep.
