Charlton Heston was neve a favorite actor of mine. I never went to see a "Charlton Heston" film. It was a movie that just happened to have him in it.

Did Heston deserve his Oscar?
Anyone see the following five performances for 1959. Who would you have voted for.

Laurence Harvey, Room at the Top
Charlton Heston, Ben-Hur
Jack Lemmon, Some Like It Hot
Paul Muni, The Last Angry Man
James Stewart, Anatomy of a Murder

Considering the discussion, this excerpt from my book seems to be appropriate:

My freshman year at the UW found me doing seven plays back-to-back
at the University’s Penthouse Theater, a theater-in-the-round. Because
they were big contributors to the Drama Department, every Penthouse
production was also presented for two performances at the Washington
Athletic Club, located in downtown Seattle. These performances
were done on a Monday and Tuesday night.

Until a few years ago, the Oscars were always presented on a Monday
night and, on this particular Oscar night in 1960, we were doing a
performance of some play at the Athletic Club. There was no Green
Room at the club, so when an actor was waiting off-stage for his cue,
he’d stand in the lobby…where a television set was broadcasting the
Awards.

I don’t recall the exact line, but there was a moment in this particular
play when an actor runs on stage and announces, “Have you heard
that ‘so-and-so’ did ‘such-and-such’?”
The other actors on stage then respond
with something like, “Oh, my God! That’s terrible!”

For this particular performance, the actor who ran on stage decided
to ad-lib, and came out with: “Have you heard that Charlton Heston and
Simone Signoret have won the Academy Awards?”

Whereupon, the rest of the cast responded with: “Oh, my God!
That’s terrible!”

I don’t think that the audience got it, but the cast certainly did.

Incidentally, the actor who did the ad-lib was named Rod Whitaker,
who later became a well-known novelist named “Trevanian”. I believe
that his best-known work was The Eiger Sanction, which was made into a
1975 movie starring Clint Eastwood.

Also, one of the actors who responded to Whitaker was David Seidler, who just won the writing Oscar for The King's Speech.

Thursday morning greetings!  Last night we took my cousin for a unique local dining experience - eating in the car at The Jug, the local drive-in that's been in business so long my husband's parents dated there.  Then Richard and I left him relaxing in front of the TV while we drove to Dayton to pick up Rob at the Greyhound station.  My cousin had crashed by the time we got home and I stayed up until 1:30am going through the bag of photos he'd brought from his mom's.  It's destined for my sister, the family genealogist, but I found a few things to keep for myself.  More later...

Although I was paid to write a book about him for Pyramid, I've never been a Charlton Heston fan.

He never really was a "box-office star".  His movies that were huge hits (e.g. BEN-HUR, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, PLANET OF THE APES, etc.) did not require his presence to achieve that status.  The public went to see the film, not him.  And, his Oscar was the result of a BEN-HUR sweep.

He wasn't a bad actor.  Like John Wayne, he had a limited range, but he excelled within that range.

If you had a jetliner in trouble or hordes of bad guys attacking, who better than Heston could save the day?

In my view, his best film performance was in WILL PENNY, which (if I remember correctly) was a very good movie, but a financial flop.

I also enjoyed SOYLENT GREEN and he was good as the "Player King" in HAMLET.

I love that movie.  It may be silly, but there is a lot of truth in it.

I think it's hilarious, one of the best spoofs of Hollywood and the studio system.

Good morning, all! I slept very late. I did get out of bed around 7, decided that I was not ready to face the world, and crawled out of bed some time after 10am. I do rememebr that I had terrifying dreams about vampires and werewolves around 3am, and I suspect it was abut that time that the ghost who walks through my apartment on occasion walked through my apartment.

Today, work: I will not let yesterday's upset get me further down, and work keeps me going. I have a lot of editorial work to get the EILEEN scores ready for the copyists, and I have some Google work on the computer: who was Thomas J. Vivian? Who the hell is Maxwell I. Pitkin?

It's hard separating Mr Heston's stolid career from his total political assholism. I recently read that he had a big streak of pedophilia, but this could be malicious gossip spread by his detractors.

With all due respect, I really doubt this.

From everything I've read/heard about Heston, he was a totally straight arrow.

I recall a story that, I think, Gore Vidal told about the making of BEN-HUR.

In the first scene between Heston and Stephen Boyd, director William Wyler told Boyd to play the scene as if there had been a "gay" relationship between the two men when they were boys.

Wyler didn't give this direction to Heston because he knew the actor would freak out.

I agree, Elmore, this is malicious gossip.

Speaking of Heston's "rug":

Roy Scheider, who was politically as far "left" as Heston was "right," told me a story about the time Heston guested on Scheider's SeaQuest TV series.

Heston, wearing his "rug," appeared in the make-up room with a box/case of his "on-camera" hairpieces.

When the make-up person tried to remove Heston's everyday hairpiece, so that he could apply the on-camera one, Heston said: "What are you talking about?  What hairpiece?"

So, the make-up person was forced to put the on-camera rug on top of the everyday one.

Pedophilia doesn't always refer to homosexual behavior. The gossip was about little girls.

I wasn't suggesting that it was homosexual behavior.

I'm saying that pedophilia with either sex does not sound like Heston.

I may not have been a fan or agreed with some of his politics, but I do believe that he was an honorable man.

BTW: When I was directing THE DOORWAY in Ireland, Roger Corman gave me a choice.  I could have either Roy Scheider or Charlton Heston as my star.

I was, briefly, tempted with the idea of Heston, since he was an Oscar-winner, but then I figured that he'd probably read my book about him...and that would cause a problem when we met.

Thanks, BK, for responding on the "Juno" question. I didn't see until now, and I noticed on the case this morning that your name was not attached. I can honestly tell that's true just from listening to it. While I didn't listen to the LP much, I do recall it having a much clearer sound than the muddy CD. And that does not figure in your work. Druxy, that's what makes horse racing.  I didn't crack a smile during The Big Picture.  Of course there's truth in the satire - but for me even satire has to be believable - in fact, the more believable the funnier the satire will be.  I simply didn't find any of the spoof or pastiche material believable - it wasn't anything that would have been done by anyone and therefore, for me, it threw the whole film out of whack.

I'll have to see if the library has it.

If I may grouse for a moment, I am home with a fever and feeling frustrated and grumpy. I have a tiresome errand that I've been trying to get to, and it is now delayed again.

WHERE DO ALL THE ERRANDS COME FROM?? They really do seen endless.

Ugh! There now. End of rant.

Oh, yes. If anyone is interested in reading more about the origins of the recent financial crisis, there is a good article in today's financial news.

Just one side of things, but a well-written article, I think.

Would love to have a cast recording of this. Coleman's music is so underrated to me. Always thought "On the Twentieth Century" had an overture to rival "Gypsy's" and a score to back it up. Any chance of your getting back in the new cast recording biz, BK?

I'm ready, willing, and able - unfortunately, the producers now pay for these things, and they just hand them to either PS Classics or Ghostlight because that's who they're comfortable with.  Many moons ago I came up with that business model for the producers of Amour.  I did a budget that was, I don't know, 50k less than Ghostlight, but they simply gave my budget to Ghostlight because one of the Shubert people knew the owner and I still hadn't quite started Kritzerland yet.  By the time I did, it was too late - they basically just do it with those guys now.  I don't happen to think it results in many good-sounding recordings, but that's just me.

Have you approached any producers lately?  Now that Kritzerland has been up and running for a while, and good word has gotten out about the work that you've been doing, maybe some producer(s) will be open to having you record their show.

There's always hope. :)

My ears were burning, and now I have charred ears.  Went back to Glendale, got the motor car and am home.  I swear to you, I was not five minutes out of the dealership when some stupid, sickening idiot just starts mildly swerving into my lane.  Now, the side of his car is bashed in - gee, I wonder why.  I look over at him and he's blithely looking everywhere but the road.  I look back in front of me and the idiot in a VW Bug has stopped - stopped - for no reason - stopped.  I had to slam on my brakes and I missed plowing into the back of his car by approximately one inch.  Perhaps he was in cahoots with the other idiot - maybe that's their con.  But alas, I fear they are simply idiots who should not be allowed behind the wheel of a car - giving them credit to be smart enough to devise such a con is, of course, ridiculous.  They're simply idiots and other drivers sometimes have to pay the price for their idiocy.  Thankful my brakes are excellent.  And you can't even yell at them because they are so totally not in the real world, but in some world of their own imagining, so they're not even aware of the havoc they almost cause.

It's hard separating Mr Heston's stolid career from his total political assholism. I recently read that he had a big streak of pedophilia, but this could be malicious gossip spread by his detractors.

Good afternoon.  I've really had Save the Park on my mind lately. It started with the mention of an oral history project through our local museum.  After STP I interviewed everyone and anyone and recorded it all.  I have the tapes somewhere.  Anyway, today, the person coordinating and trying to resurrect our oral history project at the SC public museum had me stop over and explained the process etc that they do to interview.  I'm looking forward to it.  The really don't want any response from the interviewer to the information being provided..."be a rock" she said....I don't think I'm capeable of "being a rock" when I'm trying to get someone to tell me their story.  So...we'll see how it goes

I used to be a rock, but I am more of a boulder now.

I have a really stupid question, and since it isn't Wednesday, I will accept an answer from anyone.  I finally got one of those printer / scanner / fax machines that say they can do anything.  Okay, here is the stupid question...

Can I send a fax from this machine just using my regular land line, or do I have to have a separate "fax only" line put in to my place?  I know nothing about faxes, except that we get a lot of them at work.

TCB, are you expecting to receive many faxes or just send?   If you won't receive faxes very often, I'd only attach the phone line when you're sending or expecting faxes.  Otherwise it can be a pain with people calling.  Of course the instruction manual can tell you how to set it so it isn't a problem

For those of you who think we have a tidy garage, here's the other photo I took of my cousin's truck.  You can see the messy workbench and the top shelf of several that are all cluttered:

I still think you have a clean garage!

Maybe I missed it, but how long will your cousin's truck be living in your garage?

Is that a double negative?
No. It would have been had you written "never not".

And that is today's notes from the copy editor.

DR Cillaliz, my cousin left in this truck at 9am and should be home in GA by now.  He backed in because he was afraid all the stuff would slide out the back if he came up our steep driveway front-first!

DR TCB - The only way to send and receive a fax is via a phone line.* So, as long as you still have a land-line and a standard modular phone cord, you're all set.

*Some companies I deal with now email me PDFs of forms and contracts. I then scan them, print out a copy for myself, fill out the form, then scan the filled-out form, then email them back the file (PDF). It's a bit "greener" that way, I guess.

As for tonight's "Grey's Anatomy"...

I really liked it.

I also really like what DR Diva Robbie called it on Twitter: GleesAnatomy ;)

And you can't even yell at them because they are so totally not in the real world, but in some world of their own imagining, so they're not even aware of the havoc they almost cause.

bk - You were not hurt. Your car was not "hurt". That's all that matters.

I'm not a Grey's regular, but I watched tonight's episode and liked it.  Then I watched PRIVATE PRACTICE and the story line about the dying mother and her 2 sons and their bad relationship hit a little too close to home - well, at least too close to the situation in my extended family...

In other news...

Today was an interesting today.

It turned out that Gabrielle Hamilton was back in town today doing a "Meet the Author" at the St. Agnes branch of the New York Public Library - which happens to be around the corner from DR elmore's fire escape. No food and drink this time - like in Chicago, just a reading from "Blood, Bones and Butter" (http://bloodbonesandbutter.net/) and a Q&A session, but it was a very entertaining hour.

Gabrielle actually remembered me from the dinner in Chicago, and she even asked to run my hair/head again. The representative from the publisher also asked me about the dinner since she had set it all up, but was not able to attend. -And I was finally able to get Gabrielle Hamilton to sign my copy of her memoir. :)

Otherwise...

The first part of my day was neither good, nor bad. Just kind of weird and frustrating. Alas, some of the "weirdness" will continue tomorrow. I just hope that by the close of business tomorrow, I will finally have a place to stay for the next two months here in New York City. Otherwise... Well... There are some contingency plans in place, and I'll deal with those when and if I have to.

Finishing off the night by listening to "Prettybelle." This is truly one of the strangest scores ever written, and probably Bob Merrill's best set of lyrics. My jaw drops almost every time I listen to it. Racists, nymphomaniacal alcoholic schizophrenics, the No-Tell Motel and first mention of sushi in a musical I can remember.

I have finished my viewing for the evening - part one of The Ten Commandments, which is longer than the entirety of most movies.  So it is written, so it shall be done.  Remember that.  In honor of being Jewish, I got some chopped liver from Gelson's, which I am now happily eating.
