Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both safe and sound, and now it is time for you to post until the safe and sound cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: JOINTURE!
-
Good morning, all! I have little to report; I have today at 1 pm another piano-vocal rehearsal with yesterday's crew and at least two new singers, Andrew and Philip, I believe; Dean ?Power, who's singing Dinny, weill arrive from Munich for tomorrow's rehearsal. Then, tonight, we add the chorus to the soloists.
The recording schedule has moved about again, so I may be returning home earlier than next Saturday. I think we are finishing up on Wednesday, so I may be coming back Thursday. I won't begin paqcking until I hear something definite.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Belated Birthday to S Woody White !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morning all.
That is all.

I've had my trek to an offcie supplies store to purchase a couple of red pencils, but the one I visited wasn't the one I was looking for! Several days ago in my peregrinations I passed a shop with 'Office Supplies' over its door and I thought, I may need to stop in at some point. I cannot remember where it was, but I thought it was on Baggot, near the Tesco's grocery. Well, the3 concierge, the doorman, and the desk staff all confirmed that there was indeed such a store on Baggot, but after walking to Tesco's I couldn't find it! There was a clerk lookihng much like a young Jonny Lee Miller that's for you, DR TCB!) outside a men's clothing store across from Tesco's so I asked him if he klnew where it was. He didn't.
I went back to thew hotel concierge who confirmed it was Hodges, just past Tesco. I now have two red pencils to mark up my music, but I still have no idea where the shop I was looking for may be. Brigadoon?
We are in for a rainy day, so I see a taxi ride and an umbrella in my future.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Belated happy, happy, S. Woody White.

TOD: I'm not supposed to eat rice because of my diabetes, but I have always loved a good paella. I first tasted it on the summer I spent in Spain in high school. The dish came out and it had these weird looking things in it (squid tentacles), but it also had green olives, so I dove right in. I couldn't get enough.
I would add a truly creamy risotto to that list, especially one with seafood and spring vegetables like asparagus stirred in. That dish requires a lot of work, though some chefs are now saying you don't need to stir it. That leads to the worst rice dish I have ever had: a crockpot risotto. It cooked for something like 11 hours and it was the nastiest thing I've ever eaten. The entire pot was ruined, and it wasn't from either overcooking or undercooking. The crockpot just isn't the place for risotto. The whole mess ended up in the garbage.

Having been raised in the southeast, I have to confess that nothing tastes better to me than white rice with chicken gravy on it. Ummmm....UMH!
I've had some delightful risottos in my life...and some beautiful curried rices.

There are many dishes that came "with" rice....especially a stuffed pork chop on rice with gravy.

Latest adventure with the Grandlads:
As to be expected, the latest weekend visit to the campground ended with a crisis (family self-generated). Seems that a hour before leaving my daughter announced that Grandlad Alex could not read the new book I brought him until he finished reading the two books required for his ninth grade honors English summer reading Program. Naturally, Alex had never seen the lists and would never be able to pick a book to read from a list anyway.
Fine, say I, I’ll get the list and we can go book-shopping next weekend.
Nope! He has to read the books this coming week.
Okay, if I get the list and make some recommendations, can you get him to a Library next week?
Nope! We do not have time in our busy schedule to take him to a Library.
(Note: she doesn’t like me taking him to the Rehoboth library because she does not want the responsibility of seeing that the books get returned.)
I did engineer a few hours reprieve on their returning home so I could “work on the problem”. (Please note: it is 7PM on a Sunday evening.)
I dashed home, found the lists, printed out same and found a bookstore open until 11PM.
Woody and I Dashed back to the trailer, rounded up Alex and headed downtown. On the drive, Woody and I went over some of the titles to generally disinterested Alex.
I did offer him the following observation:
A. You let us help you pick out two books, tonight, at the store which you will take home and read, or
B. Your Mother will pick out two books from the Library on her way home from work and she’ll make you read them.
Your choice – Door A or Door B.
(“Make him an offer he can’t refuse.”)
Fortunately, the book store had most of the listed titles in stock; unfortunately, the paperback editions offered had lousy cover art and damn little descriptive matter. And to make matters even worse, the blurbs on the rear covers all dealt with the significance (literary and/or social) of the work and told nothing about the character of the book that would entice a young reader to open the cover. Nothing to suggest why anyone would read “Cather in the Rye” or :”Brave New World”. “Heart of Darkness” and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” sound downright boring. Selections like “Tom Jones” and “Gulliver’s Travels” are a lost cause on a lad who does not know what “satire” means.
With our help, he finally settled on “Slaughter House Five” (Multiple time periods, fire bombing of Dresden), “1984” (Sci-Fi), and “Animal Farm” (really a thin book) from which he’ll choose two.
Once over this hurdle, we’ll work picking other selections for future use (the list is a High School AP English list, so it will be revisited. Knowing his sense of humor, I’m sure he would enjoy “Candide”, “Tom Jones”, and “Gulliver’s Travels”.
der Brucer
Note: neither of his parents had read any of the books on the list; at least Woody and I were able to discuss most of them from personal experience.

IOWA STATE FAIR (http://www.aol.com/2011/08/18/weird-and-wonderful-state_n_930077.html#s332590&title=Prizewinning_Bees)
A state fair is not just an event, it's a state of mind -- an alternate state of consciousness where the normal rules disappear.
The logical side of the brain that tells you to seek a healthy balanced diet somehow decides that the four food groups include bacon, butter, chocolate and bacon.
Something in the air makes people who normally won't ride in a car that doesn't have air bags are suddenly willing to throw caution to the wind and go on rickety carnival rides run by grizzled carnies who may or may not have all their teeth.
People who are normally obsessed with their fantasy sports leagues, suddenly take a deep-rooted interest in pig racing or outhouse racing
Bacon-alive!
(http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/44480/slide_44480_332402_large.jpg?1313689204343)
Everyone knows someone who is a big bore. Blake Everman, of Postville, Iowa, knows a big boar as well, but the one he knows is his pig, Tiny. However, Everman doesn't dread hanging around this big boar, at least not since he won the Big Boar Contest at the Iowa State Fair. The hefty ham weighs 1,196 lbs.
Child abuse?
(http://i.huffpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/44480/slide_44480_332293_large.jpg?1313689451359)
Perhaps no carnival food expresses the epitome of artery-clogging fun as fried butter, which quickly became the rage at the Iowa State Fair, sampled by everyone with a pulse (at least beforehand). This butter is folded into a thick cinnamon and honey batter and fried until the batter becomes golden brown. Then it's topped with a sugary icing. Summer Anderson of Washington, Iowa, who attended the fair with her son Colton Anderson, 11, compared the taste to a cinnamon roll with a lot of butter. Her rationale for trying the buttery assault: "You got to have something weird at the fair," she said.

I'm a big rice eater. Given my many allergies, it is indeed fortunate that I tolerate it so well. Long-grain basmati rice is my favorite.

Druxy told me Cindy and Penny were doing the show - so not sure why they're not listed unless Druxy was incorrect.

I was just on the phone with Discover card customer service. (Yes, JMK, the same company that advertises "zero liability protection".) I was charged twice at a Chevron station when I filled my car with gas. I found it interesting that they can take care of most incorrect charges over the phone, but errors with the airlines must be dealt with in writing.
I also am learning that you must use short sentences, because they jump in whether you've finished speaking or not. Also, do NOT attempt to make two points at one time. Break everything down into simple issues. And, as soon as you pause for breath (and even if you don't), they will immediately give you their pitch. Instead of so much sales pitch, don't you think customers would appreciate being listened to better? But I am just one of those old fuddy-duddies who likes courtesy. I am soooo out of step with today's world!!
-
Lessons learned DR JEANNE.......I hear your pain.
-
Like DR JohnG, I shouldn't eat rice, but I do when I am at an Indian place.
There are a lot of rice dishes that I like, but have never been crazy about plain white rice, unless there is something yummy on it like gravy or butter or it is in a bowl with milk, cinnamon and sugar.

Good evening! I am back from a long day of rehearsal: soloists in the afternoon, with Dean in from Munich and Phillip in from around the corner, both lovely gentlemen, and an evening rehearsal with chorus and soloists. Some things are still iffy but the soloists are amazing: Eamonn and Mary moved me to tears with 'Thine Alone,' and Lynda Lee amazes me with her voice. I adore Rachel Kelly, the baby of the group, who's not only a beautiful and funny lady, but a really good artist.
I heard tonight from one of our producers that our actors for Lanty Hackett and Humpy GTrogan, blackguards, informers, and traitors, are now cast and showing up tomorrow and showing up at rehearsal with Joe and Andrew, our last two singers.
After rehearsal, conductor David Brophy and I stepped out for a pint of Guinness and talked about Brendan Behan, who knew David's grandfather. And now to bed.

I found it very odd the other day as I was searching to see which old VHS stuff had come out on DVD and BD. Why, for instance, would a tiny film like STRANGER FROM VENUS be available while THE GO-BETWEEN should not? It's not a case of PD versus copyright, as many I found were imports anyway from nations that don't observe US copyright customs.
-
I'm curious for the people with kids on HHW. In the US in what grade do they teach kids how to read?
I'm wondering what grade it is here. I would have thought grade 1. Although my niece is taking grade 1 in french. So if they teach her how to read it would be in french.
-
When I was in school it was first grade.
-
Something odd. My niece taught herself to read this past year (when she was 5). My sister's best friend's sister runs a daycare and she could not believe that a 5 year old could read. So the friend videotaped my niece reading the newspaper.
Apparently my niece's friends who are mostly 6 can't read (I would have thought that most kids would have picked up some reading on their own).I thought it was interesting that my niece taught herself to read. But i never thought it was that special. I mean she will be starting grade 1 in 2 weeks. I was surprised that the friend's sister could not fathom a 5 year old reading. It's not like she was 2. Now if my other niece could read that would be impressive. :)

Happy Birthday, DR jhvw!
-
The Woman Who Did Not Come to Dinner Department: I guess some people will do anything to avoid coming to our house--just got a call from the husband of a lady I worked for for years back in my 20s and 30s, whom we had invited to dinner tomorrow night, telling me she just had a heart attack. She's okay, had a stent placed in and seems to be doing fine, but no dinner tomorrow night.
I'll have to remember that one.
-
I had my procedure today.
They took three biposies, but I won't know the results for three weeks. (To rule out Barrett's Esophagus, H. Pylori and one other)
They did not find any cancer.
It turns out I've been suffering form moderate gastritis, it has been quite bad the last few weeks, but I've been suffering it from the last four months or so
I've lost about 15 pounds because of this.
I've have one more test to do for my gallbladder.
And that's my update
-
Now I have to catch up on what I've missed.
-
That's good news, Michael S.
-
Happy Birthday, DR jhvw!
Whoops! And brother David!
-
When I was in school, I learned to read in the First Grade. I never had to learn History, because there wasn't any.
-
LOL, TCB!
-
A dust storm is headed toward Phoenix.
Oh, no!
-
Wae-Ling asked me once about living in The Olden Days.

DR Laura, THere's another haboob on it's way to your house. !!!!

Or go to AZCentral.com -- it's the first thing on the page.

I'm curious for the people with kids on HHW. In the US in what grade do they teach kids how to read?
I'm wondering what grade it is here. I would have thought grade 1. Although my niece is taking grade 1 in french. So if they teach her how to read it would be in french.
My parents told me that I taught myself how to read before I was in kindergarten. :)
-
TOD:
Do Rice Krispies count? Well, then...how about Rice Krispy Squares?
Ditto and Ditto!!
I do like fried rice or steamed rice at Panda Express (I usually get either some of their sweet and sour sauce or their Mandarin sauce to put on the steamed rice) or just about any Spanish/Mexican rice. Surprisingly, I don't like rice pudding at all...I don't know why. :P I muchly prefer tapioca pudding to rice pudding.
He-he-he, you said tapioca!
Let's all do The Tapioca!! :D

Have they said where it is, Cillaliz? A city name? I heard the helicopter guy say a while back it was on route 347.

They aren't talking much right now, they showed the helicopter....let me do some looking

They said it was moving into the Southeast valley, but didn't say where the photos were being taken. They also said you can see it on radar

I think there are just too many people on the website

They quit talking about it and went to one of their shows "Full Force Nature" NBC has ruined the weather channel. You can't get enough current weather on there anymore
-
Laura, I think I can see your house right below.

The Monarch Scientist says it is just rolling into her part of town.

I'm sure your niece is read to a lot, plus you might have been teaching her without realizing it.
The pre-school teacher told me to stop teaching Bryan how to read & I mistakenly listened, after all it was a Montessori school. He was doing so in Kindergarten (age 5) in Massachusetts. The Kindergarten teacher in Pennsylvania wouldn't let him read so he stopped. I don't think she liked him. After that experience I went ahead & taught Craig to read before he started Kindergarten in Pennsylvania knowing he would have the same teacher as Bryan. The teacher liked Craig & let him read to the class. When you do the ground work for reading, teaching is really just letting them read, with help, on their own & building on their skills.
To answer your question, formal teaching began in 1st grade around age six. I suppose that could have changed by now.
-
Good news and continued Vibes to DR Michael
-
The Monarch Scientist says it is just rolling into her part of town.
Where is that in relation to your house?
-
Both things I find useful today.
;D The Montessori did have a neat book to teach shoe tying, something I did fail at teaching.
-
They teach reading in kindergarten here.
They did not teach any reading here in kindergarten. There was a lot of play time! But they did learn to speak french.
I think the second language is wonderful, wish we taught French here beginning in Kindergarten.
-
She is a twenty-minute drive south of me.

I thought so Laura....be safe...
-
Thanks, Cillaliz. These really aren't dangerous unless you are on the road. It's the microbursts that are really scary (I've only been in one).
-
At least, this hobnob doesn't look as huge as the last one.
-
DR Michael S
vibes for the gallbladder test. I hope you can be treated for the gastritis & get relief!!!!

I remember having a really bad bout with gastritis once. It was extremely painful. Vibes you're better FAST!

Has anyone else been reading about the Salem, Oregon woman with terminal cancer who had her weekly garage sales shut down by the city (Boo, Salem!)? She used the money from the garage sales to pay for her cancer treatment.
I guess there is now an online site that has raised over $8,000.00 for the woman's care.
-
Former President Bill Clinton has become a vegan!!
I know. ;)
I have been eating more dairy & am gaining weight. I need to be good tomorrow. I can see with Craig it is a healthy diet if done correctly.

I shall withhold my opinion regarding the vegan diet.

Sure Jane, blame it on the dairy. Why don't you blame it on the rutabaga?
-
Well, sometimes we are treated to a nice downpour of rain after a haboob. I hope so tonight. We have had very little rain this monsoon.
-
I shall withhold my opinion regarding the vegan diet.
I think everyone should have a vegan diet and be sure to balance that with a nice cut of beef

thank you for the vibes

Laura would have loved going on vacation with us - lots of rain

You should have told him Catcher in the Rye is filled with naughty words.
Or told him the name of Huck Finn's raft mate.

Interesting how many of the books on the recommended lists are banned from many school libraries.
I remember having to read many of those same books in ninth grade. A couple came a little later. But I think Animal Farm is a good start. And, yes, it is short.
-
Like DR JohnG, I shouldn't eat rice, but I do when I am at an Indian place.
There are a lot of rice dishes that I like, but have never been crazy about plain white rice, unless there is something yummy on it like gravy or butter or it is in a bowl with milk, cinnamon and sugar.
Went to an Indian/Pakistani place tonight for dinner and thought of you because of the Bollywood videos playing throughout dinner. Some 1970s stuff. Fairly interesting because of how dated it looked and yet was timeless.
Had to the Brain Fry plate with goat. Quite good.
-
I shall withhold my opinion regarding the vegan diet.

Great storm photos, Laura. It doesn't rain here anymore, so I have forgotten what that is like.

It didn't rain here, either. Just dust.

~~~~~WELLNESS VIBES FOR DR TCB~~~~~
As for the Topic of the Day...
I, too, like a generous serving of well-made basmati rice. It's amazing when rice actually tastes like rice and not just starch.
Well-made sushi rice is also quite tasty.
Otherwise, paella, especially the soccarat, the crunchy part on the bottom of the pan. I also like the Afghan/Persian tadik.
When my grandmother lived with us in Seattle, she would make this delicious chocolate rice pudding/porridge. There's also a traditional Filipino rice dessert, babingka. I guess it's close to a baked rice pudding, but it's steamed and baked in banana leaves, and there's usually some pieces of coconut and/or jackfruit mixed into it.
-
Beautiful pictures, DR Laura.
-
DR elmore - It really does sound like you're having a wonderful time in Dublin, and that everything points to the actual recording sessions going very well too.
You mentioned that you might fly back earlier due to a scheduling change. Did they give you an "open" airline ticket? Or would you just fly standby?
