Happy Birthdays to the J's.
-
You know, JR, you should follow Sergio Mendes' lead. When Brasil '66 hit, he kept that year for around four years, and then had a big ad in Billboard with a poll and little coupon to vote you could mail in to A&M asking if the band should stay at '66 or update to '70. ;)
-
Not very pleased with Warner Archive right now. Ordered a bunch of their new stuff a few days ago and now of course it's all on sale.
-
DR JMK, did you catch that amazing show of lightning and thunder up your way!
It began here around 3 am. I opened up my bedroom blinds and lay back and watched the show. Some pretty darn close calls with that lightning, I must say.

Happy Birthday, JRand!

Well, another setback for my mom. She woke up at the rehab center early Thursday morning with an intense pain in her left foot and the staff there detected that she had some wheezing going on. After an ultrasound, they detected a blood clot in her foot and sent her back to the hospital where it was further found that she also had a small clot in her lung. It's scary, but she is having no difficulties with her breathing and all her vitals are fine, so the doctors admitted her to just the PCU where they will treat her with blood thinners and keep an eye on her for a few days. But still, she is getting tired of these repeated visits and wants to get back to the rehab so she can get her life back.
-
Vibes for DR Dan (the Man)'s Mom - blood clots are scary things!
-
JMK, my guess is if you call them they will make the adjustment.
-
I, on the other hand, am up.
-
I sent Warner Archives a message via their website but I don't see any 800 number anywhere.
-
I do think there's one somewhere - google.
What was the last bad weather thing where there was this huge deal made and then nothing really happened? It was three or four years ago? Just trying to remember.

I'm wondering why I opened & watched the video of people in Florida getting knocked over by giant waves in Florida. Even more mind boggling is why people would be out on a jetty watching Irene. I'm not sure where the person taking the video was standing but it sounded like a large group of people watching from across the jetty.

Good afternoon, everyone! I've been home about an hour. The flight and transportation from Newark to New York went really well. I'm in the middle of laundry, so I'll log back later but let's get to the important news:

DR der Brucer - I was thinking about you and DR SWW while watching MSNBC and wondering if you'd received an evacuation order.

There have been nothing but news alerts on how the area is closing down for Irene. The last time we had such a brouhaha, all we got was a lot of rain here. I do worry about folk further south of Manhattan, but I really have no idea what to expect here. I wish us all well.
Time to take some laundry out of the dryers. Back later.

Unless, of course, it is a deaf Dalmatian - then it should destroyed.
Lectures The Damnatian Club of America (http://www.thedca.org/deaf1.html):
Responsible breeders NEVER knowingly sell, place or give away deaf pups to pet homes. Deaf pups should ALWAYS be humanely destroyed by a veterinarian.
The Dalmatian Club of America Board of Governors feels very strongly that deaf pups should NEVER be sold, placed or given away, and most certainly should not be bred from. Deaf Dalmatians are hard to raise, difficult to control (they are often hit by cars when they "escape") and often become snappish or overly aggressive, especially when startled.
Our local Dalmatian Rescue of Delaware was offically black-balled by the national organization for allow folks like us to adopt critters like Fletcher.
Fletcher has been a delight to raise;,he is difficult to control because he is willful, not because he is deaf; responsible owners should always try to avoid having their animals play in traffic - deaf or not; he wouldn't even snap when he has been snapped at; and, his startle reflex is to kiss! When we take him for walks on the boarwalk, he regularly has youngsters come up behind him and pat him- he just turns around to see what new friend he is meeting. When I shake his haunch to wake him up, he licks my hand before he even opens his eyes. He has learned to take cues from the other dogs behavior - when one of our cars enters the drive, Fletcher is the first at the window to greet the driver. (There is obviously a distict "posture" the other dogs take, because he ignores them when they bark at the mail truck, or someone walking a dog, but he leaps up when they bark at Woody arriving home.)

DR der Brucer - I was thinking about you and DR SWW while watching MSNBC and wondering if you'd received an evacuation order.
At present we are under a "voluntary" evacuation order. Woody's employers response to the problem was to add an additional two hours to his schedule both today and tomorrow.

I'm sorry I laughed (at the absurdity) of the "deaf Dalmation" statement. There was a time when some breeders would do the same with a blue eyed Bernese Mountain Dog to keep the fact hidden they had bred a "defective" dog.

As I was driving my normal route to work this morning (through a long stretch of neighborhoods), I enjoyed some lingering fog...and the sight of a cat leisurely strolling across the street a couple of blocks ahead of me.
It occurred to me at that moment that I've never once seen a dog cross the street in the 18 years I've lived in Oakland. I've, of course, seen dogs being walked....but no unleashed dogs have the freedom of cats. And, of course, it's the leash laws that have caused this.
I recall being startled in Johnston SC a couple of Christmases back when a dog ran up to me, barking, while I was walking around the series of ponds by my mom's house. The dog was furious with me for being on his road, but he never actually put a paw onto the blacktop. But he paced the border of his yard in absolute hysterics that I dared enter his sight. This dog was unleashed, and I was prepared to fend him off if he attacked. My mom later told me that was common around her neighborhood...that Johnston -- and probably South Carolina -- had no leash laws.
This morning, while considering the absence of dogs, I realized what a good thing that was...that most dogs chase passing cars and that it's very easy to be involved in an incident during which a dog runs under the car, or at least the wheel. I remember my cocker spaniel, Toby, always chased cars....at least when me, my mom or dad were in the yard. It was his way of saying, "Look! I'm doing my job!"

Batteries & milk, the first things to go. Of course if you need the batteries chances are the milk will go bad, unless it is powdered milk.
-
I've seen the rare, well behaved, dog that walks without a leash. Good for Oakland. I like that we have places to go where dogs can run free.

What was the last bad weather thing where there was this huge deal made and then nothing really happened?
Last year - Hurricane Earl (weakened dramtically after it pased the Carolinas, and then made an unexpected turn eastward and spared NY and New England.

Fresh milk is an "iffy" purchase considering the probability of power losses that will cause the loss of refrigeration. (The power company has already sent out taped phone messages advising us to be prepared for a multi-day loss of power. The company is doing its best - it has already prepositioned imported (from the wastelands of Ohio, no doubt) power system workers to be ready to restore any outages as soon as possible.
We have a Duracell Powerpack that when fully charged can provide 12 VDC and 115 VAC power to let us operate some household gadgets for limited periods ( can chard a cell phone or operate a computer for a few hours.
The RV park where my daughter & tribe dwell on most weekends has posted a sign that they are closing the park as of 5 PM and will be turning off the power to the entire campground (too bad for folks already gone who have refrigerators without automatic propane backup)

My hairdresser told me today about some make-up that brides use to hide their tattoos from their mothers. We're off in search of said substance for the purpose of covering the bruises on my arms. With all the blood thinning medication I take, all I have to do is unload a car full of groceries and my arms are all black and blue. I'd hate for that to show up in Rob and Mary Linda's wedding photos.
Bye for now!
-
DR der Brucer, in 2008 the power companies here in Ohio sent lots of workers to Texas in anticipation of Hurricane Ike. He paid us a surprise visit, too, and their absence delayed our restoration of power.

Now I really am leaving...bye!

Here are two of my favorite people from Dublin, Rachel Kelly and my new BFF Joe Csibi, who reminds me a lot of my drummer friend Chris.
After the sessions ended, I got this truly moving email from our leading tenor, Eamonn Mulhall. I don't like to blow my own horn so much as to report on what I'm up to, but I did want to share this with you. I never stop to think what people I work with think of me, I just do my job, and I had one of my best working experiences in Dublin. I also never get such emails as this:
Thank you for all your coaching and advice. I hope you appreciate that everyone's face in the cast and orchestra would light up when you swung the door open on the stage. You're a true gem!

The only safe way, IMHO, to light candles if you are going to walk away from them.

Does he have a store in the Pearl District?

This has been a day full of interesting developments and conundrums. I just received a phone call from the Institute that shut Toyland down in March with an invitation to come to California and see an opera production in September.

Welcome thirty-two GUESTS.

I'm really going to miss DS Craig when he leaves. Not only is he a pleasure to have around he cooks. DS Bryan is on his way home & Craig has been making all sorts of sauces, & I don't know what, for the the dinner he is cooking us. He did the shopping & is doing the dishes as he works. :)

I"m going to a hootenanny tonight. Seriously. I don't think I've ever been to a hootenanny and my guess is neither have any of the other people going to this one. I've been trying to decide what instrument to take. I think I'll get my flute out and see if I want to take that...I just don't want 50 people wanting to try my flute....hmmmm

One of my all time favorite songs....and like everyone else, I never have been able to figure out the lyrics....of course, I can't figure out the lyrics to most of my favorite songs.

DR Elmore, the e-mail you got made me smile! It is nice to know you are appreciated!!

Thanks MBarnum.
I better get ready to go. I think this will really be fun
-
I'd forgotten how many wonderful songs were in the movie HOOTENANNY HOOT! I might just have to popo that DVDr into the player again one of these days.
-
And since I really do want to have some "fun" today, I'm going to get ready to head out for a bit. Today's rehearsal doesn't start until 2:30, so that gives me a few hours to enjoy some cupcakes, cookies and gelato. ;)
Laters...
Since this is Friday, it must be Ask Jose Day!
I heard on the news that Broadway is closing most of its shows this weekend, due to Irene. Any cancellation plans for OKLAHOMA?
-
You know, JR, you should follow Sergio Mendes' lead. When Brasil '66 hit, he kept that year for around four years, and then had a big ad in Billboard with a poll and little coupon to vote you could mail in to A&M asking if the band should stay at '66 or update to '70. ;)
Yes, Mr. Mendes told me in an interview back in 1968, that he kept the 66 name, because he wanted to avoid the "69" name.

Health vibes and prayers to Dan's dear mom!

That is really kind, Mikey, given all the horrible crap I make up and say about you.
Mikey, guess who flew to New York from Dublin today? The Irish Firemen's Football Team; they'll be in NYC for a week playing games, and you would be very happy to meet them, I do believe.

Good afternoon, everyone! I've been home about an hour. The flight and transportation from Newark to New York went really well. I'm in the middle of laundry, so I'll log back later but let's get to the important news:

Be safe everyone. Candles work if you don't have batteries. I have some great Emergency Candles that are in tall glass jars so I feel safe leaving them lit for awhile
The only safe way, IMHO, to light candles if you are going to walk away from them.
We just stick votive candles in old-fahion glasses

That's very nice, Elmore. :)

I had no idea such a product existed. Even if you don't need it I'm sure you will feel more relaxed having it with you.
It's not just for brides...stage actors need it, too.
;)

Well, all the "coastal areas" of Delaware are under mandatory evacuation; fortunately we miss the designated area by about two blocks.
The Gov has ordered private businesses to close Saturday and into Sunday until the order is lifted.
Woody has just received a call making his work day 6AM to 2PM.
Evacualtion must be complete by 9AM tomorrow.
Of course if you didn't happen upon the County web site and have Adobe software on your computer, you'd have no idea where the evacuation areas are.
(And the state admits they have no resources to enfore an evacuation.)
To help with an evacuation, all the gas stations have closed.

Mission accomplished! I am now the proud owner of Dermablend Professional Cover Creme and Setting Powder. I also bought some sparkly blue eyeshadow. It was my first visit to an Ulta Beauty (http://www.ulta.com) store, but it probably won't be my last 8)

I'm having an amusing "conversation" with some buffoon who must own blu-ray.com or be one of its Nazi policemen. As occasionally happens, I received a rebuke (privately) from him for critiquing the personality of the reviewers (never mind that I was making a general statement in response to someone else's post). I asked him to please point out where I critiqued the personality of a reviewer on his site. We've now volleyed back and forth a few times and funnily he has not provided an example of where I critiqued the personality of a reviewer on his site. Funny that. Perhaps JMK can tell us who this buffoon really is and maybe pass on to him that he's behaving not only like a police state official but a horse's rectal cavity as well - he goes by the name of Pro-Bassoonist. If he is a Pro-Bassoonist perhaps that is explanation enough. What a peckerwood.
-
I also returned with CDs from some of the personnel in our EILEEN orchestra, so I'll be litening to them all this weekend:
Our trumpeter Niall O'Sullivan does Irish tunes and popular songs
Our principal cellist Gerald Peregrine is the nephew of my late friend Frank Patterson and our friend Joe Csibi is his arranger for his recording; Gerald's cousin Geraldine, a niece of Frank Patterson's, was our harpist
Our concertmaster Fionnuala Hunt gave me two recordings: her Tango album and "Irish Fantasy," an album she did with her sister Una Hunt (my beloved Rachel Kelly's mother)

Nice collection there DR ELMORE....
Hootenanny Hoot is a classic - in that you can't believe you are seeing most of the old MGM backlot in such a cheapjack Sam Katzman Clover Production......
Among the buildings - Tate College, The Old Southern Mansion, and the small town courthouse.

Welcome home Dear Larry!
I'm so glad you had a good time in Dublin.

We are fine here in Manhattan. We are not in any "zone" so we don't have to evacuate. We are in the middle of the city away from both the East River and the Hudson River. Things are calm now but the wind and rain are not supposed to start until some time tomorrow. I think Deb on Long Island will have it worse than us in Manhattan.
We plan on staying in all weekend and watching Season 4 of Doc Martin and whatever else comes across our screens.

I have some soy milk, mainly because I don't normally buy regular milk because of the short shelf life...the soy milk stays good for a year (unopened, of course)!

It is nice to know that, after a highly successful visit to Dublin; our Larry is safely at home again.

One of the best things about having double birthdays on this site; is not having to worry about hitting an all-time low in posts.
-
It is nice to know that, after a highly successful visit to Dublin; our Larry is safely at home again.
I think it's nice to get back from Dublin and know you're not facing amputation!
-
The hurricane rushing up the Eastern Seaboard reminds me of when we were at the Titanic site in 1996. The team was fighting and fighting to raise that large section of the hull; and they had it within 200 feet of the surface. Our Captain kept telling us that we had to leave for Boston, because Hurricane Edouard was going to run smack into us if we waited. We kept begging for a couple more hours, but finally we headed home. The recovery ship tried to pull the section of the hull to shallower waters, but the last cables snapped, and the section sank back to the bottom for an additional two years.

Well, it's time for me to leave work and go home.
Until later.

I would ask everyone to please consider that the site is my employer and I have colleagues and friends there. Perhaps barbed commeentary could be kept to PMs. I would appreciate it.
-
When people behave like jerks I think they deserve to be called on it. Especially when they behave like little despots. It really rankles me. I understand that you review for them ("employer" seems a little odd to me) and I will refrain from further comment on this board and will say anything I have to say via e-mail to you personally.
-
Finished viewing one motion picture on DVD and may try another, but I think since I only ate a Chinese chicken salad for lunch maybe I should get a snack.
-
Well the stores are out of milk ,bread, ice and batteries
water bottles are scarce as hen's teeth
nothing left to do but sit tight and hope that we don;t get hit too hard
the worst hurricane I have experienced was Gloria back in 1986 - we were without electricity for a week then
of course having seen the damages in Joplin and New Orleans I know that was merely an inconvenience
-
I hope that Jrand and Jose are enjoying their birthday
-
Elmore ! What a lovely note !
It is nice to know that you are appreciated

DR TCB - The current plan is that all performances of Oklahoma! will go on as scheduled this weekend. However, Arena has waived the exchange fee for those patrons who wish not to attend Saturday evening's performance. Otherwise, we're just waiting to see what the District government says once the storm is actually in the area.
*I already packed an overnight bag of clothes since I'm not looking forward to driving back out to Fairfax after tomorrow night's show.

And now...
Sleep.
Goodnight.

Well, since we're so close...

PAGE NINE DANCE!!
-
I had SOOO much fun tonight. My mom told me to take my flute to the hootenanny so I did. It wasn't a realy hootenanny more of an open mic sort of thing with lots of percussion etc laying around. It was sort of a thrown together band, I played my flute and sang and was part of the band all night. My friends had never heard me sing or play and most didn't know I spent a big chunk of my life as a musician. It was a blast to surprise them and to feel like a musician for the first time in years. I am very tired and will sleep well tonight
-
Special vibes to the VIXFAMILY~~~~~~~

To everyone else....vibes that all is well....BE SAFE!!!

I am happy and tired and relaxed and glad to know I've still got it. The place was fadiing a bit and the host thought the experiment may be a failure until I started singing the blues. Everyone literally stopped what the were doing and gathered around our makeshift stage. They started dancing and we into the music the rest of the night. It was Such a blast.

Well, I need to go to bed. I'm meeting a friend for brunch (and maybe a bit of shopping) and if I have time, I'd like to go into work for a couple of hours. At least to clean up my office a bit. On Monday, they're (finally!) having one interview for the collection manager position...which is my supervisor. I should at least make it a bit more presentable than it is. ::)
