Well, you've read the notes, the notes were so 2011, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be home for sure by 2017.
-
And the word of the day is: RECONDITE!
-
Topic of the Day: I was three years old in 1969. ::)
;)
I'll have to think about this one.
-
Today at work is going to be a day. We're FINALLY having another interview for our collection manager position (which is my supervisor). This is the third, count 'em THIRD round of interviews...actually, the second time that the position was announced, they didn't do any live interviews. I think that they had a couple of phone interviews, but no one was good enough for a live interview.
We'll see what happens!
-
And now...to bed. 8)
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Eating breakfast and then back to the office for a week (with a short Friday) of work.
-
We are closed Monday.
We will probably stay in the city this weekend instead of going to Long Island since we were just out there two weeks ago.
-
The sun is up and it looks like a nice day in Manhattan.
-
Bye for now.
-
good morning to all
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm on a bus, Bolt-ing back to NYC for a true 24-hour visit.
-
I understand the Jose might be making his way towards Florida.
-
Not the musical Jose, but the tropical storm Jose.
-
Actually, it will be less than 24 hours. More like 18 hours. But, of course, food(!) will be involved.
-
Not the musical Jose, but the tropical storm Jose.
Wait? There's a musical called Jose?
::)
-
And since I don't want to annoy my seat mate, and since I do want to zonk out for a bit...
Laters...
-
Well, things have changed. I'm glad I called. I have the day off due to "transportation disruptions". Of course, I have no transportation disruptions but many in my office do, especially those living in New Jersy and Long Island, so they decided to close for the day. We resume normal office hours tomorrow and then Friday we close at 1 (I'll leave at 11) for the Labor Day holiday.
Today I will call the super to get the leak in the kitchen sink faucet fixed.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Like George, I was a young'un back then. Certainly too young to see "Midnight Cowboy."
Here's a link to movies from 1969 from which I culled the list below: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_films_of_1969
They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Thanks to all for the comments on Abby......this is the first time in MY WHOLE LIFE that there has not been at least ONE pet in the house......
It's quiet.

Good morning, all! This has been a morning of [i[tsuris[/i]; conversation wth Judy about our EILEEN situation, an email from the Calfornia office thalaid everyone in Toyland off in March, and I am srill deciphering the geographic lay of the land in Manhattan after the Hurricane madness.
From the reports all over the Hudson area and south of the City, I think the news media did well to cover things so heavily and dramatically; it's making things so much easier for the cleanup crews and all rescue efforts and repairs. I'm happy a lot of Manhattanites evacuated this weekend. There's an editorial in today's TIMES praising Mayor Bloomberg and the media for urging folk to get out of Manhattan.
So, today, I've got some banking, perhaps a visit with my London friend Dominic McHugh, and a trip to the post office. I'll put off my trip to check out the situation at Toyland on hold until tomorrow.
TOD: I have no memory of films I saw in 1969! I was in grad school and - between the music and theatre depts. and my job at the university library - I was working my proverbial butt off!

All subway service is back. Fantastic!
All the parks are closed until they've been inspected for damage and falling limbs and other potential threats. I'm sure they're quite muddy as well.
-
I was wide awake at 2:45 this morning. I have no idea if it were the fact that it was 7:45 in Dublin and I haven't adjusted to the new time zone or if it were my mind running through the logistics of dealing with two difficult employers.
-
Good morning.
-
I believe I'm up. I've announced the new title. One irksome thing - I "liked" the Francis Lai page on Facebook, and therefore when you put that name in anything you post there that post is supposed to show up as a "related post" and all friends of Lai see it. That did not happen. Too bad. Thus far I have received 0 orders.
-
Hopefully that will change or there will be no more foreign film soundtracks from us.
-
We've now had one order.
-
Things are looking up.
-
Monday morning greetings! Today I will confer by phone with the banquet manager in Michigan about numbers for the rehearsal dinner. We're at 67, with only 3 unknowns, so I think we'll have them set up 9 tables of 8 and plan food for 75.

Little effect from Irene on my part. No loss of electricity, no water in the basement and very little debris in the yard.
My office building in Conshohocken is closed due to the entire street it's located on being flooded, but I wouldn't have been able to get out there anyway because the train service out that way has been suspended. It would be a day off for me but I elected to come into our client's office in Philly to get the comp time.
Mom is doing well in the hospital but she is getting antsy. My sisters and I don't want them to discharge her until we can see that Mom has no leg swelling or infections to take back to the rehab center.

Good plan from DR DtM and his sisters as well.

I watched my Hullabaloo DVD's last night and saw MR BK's friend David Winters in a couple of nice numbers.....he was choreographer for the show!
Also saw Miss Donnie McKechnie in several numbers....and after watching seven episodes, I can do the boys' steps to the opening song! ;D

Not good! You want a lab tech who wears a tool belt and enters the room like Paul Bunyan in drag. One of my favorite vampires responded to my caution that "I have rolling veins I'm told" by remarking: "That's just an excuse from someone who can't get the job done right the first time".
She hit a vein the first stab and filled all eight vials without ado.

I have the same thing happen, Ginny, and unfortunately I now have to have regular blood draws since I'm on cholesterol meds. I have had the phlebotomists actually reach their "quota" of attempts on me. It's horrifying.

I got a really cool Peter Matz album a few months ago when I was madly getting all the Enoch Light Project 3 releases.

Methinks Google Translate may need to improve its algorithms:
Opera companies came from Eastern Europe decades ago to Madrid and balanced opera seasons of Teatro de la Zarzuela, which then revolved around the divas, with shows in highlighting the work of a whole and, in particular, quality of orchestra and chorus. Levantaban admiración. They raised admiration. Rara es la que no venía con Boris Godunov como carta de presentación. Rarely is it did not come with Boris Godunov and cover letter. And all provoked admiration, even the less famous: Opera Varna, Bulgaria, for example, in 1978, Stefan Elenkov, Boris, and Milcheva Alexandrina, the Navy (it was not yet the fashion of the original versions and Polish act is always included). Como la ópera va por rachas empezaron a llover oleadas de críticas a estas compañías que tanto asombro musical producían, por la sencilla razón de que las puestas en escena olían a naftalina. As the opera goes in spurts began to pour waves of criticism of these companies that both produce musical wonder, for the simple reason that the staging smelled of mothballs. Y así a mediados de la década de los ochenta Piero Faggioni dirigió un Boris con Raimondi en el que la teatralidad impuso unos fascinantes niveles de emoción añadida. And in the mid-eighties led a Faggioni Piero Raimondi Boris theatricality in which the levels imposed a fascinating added excitement. Parecía que se había encontrado la solución adecuada desde la puesta en escena, sin que el escalofrío musical se perdiese. Seemed to have found the right solution from the staging without the musical thrill is lost.

I hate it when the right solution from the staging without the musical thrill is lost.

CACTUS FLOWER
VIVA MAX (Best after quite a few drinks)
And it took A CHORUS LINE to take worst film of a musical away from PAINT YOUR WAGON
Films like KRAKATOA and MAROONED are underwhelming when projected by letter boxed 16 MM on a portable movie screen – the unhappy lot of those of us who spent most of the ‘60S at sea.
Actually I spent the last part of 1969 in Bath, ME working on the installation and checkout of a new weapons system for the Navy. She was the third of her class, and the first two had failed their qualifying tests miserably – so the Admiral in charge rolled the dice and sent a junior officer who had a reputation for thinking out side the box to get the new fangled computer based contraption working as advertised. My “out of the box” included putting the ship (and crew) on 24 hour per day operating status (which required a wholesale change in the allocation of ship personnel assignments – and a total rewrite of the ship’s Organization Manual), moving the Captain’s battle station from the Bridge to the inside Combat Information Center (and a complete rewrite of the ships Battle Bill to support a new command structure). When we showed up for the critical qualifying trials, the supervising team wanted the organization put back “the way it’s supposed to be”, the Admiral refused, we went to trials that two other ships had failed miserably; we aced them and my “out of the box screwball way” became “the usual way” for the ships to follow.
(The most fun was taking the ship from the shipyard at Bath ME to her homeport of Long Beach CA (via the Panama Canal).

VIVA MAX (Best after quite a few drinks)
. . .
So do you like the film of VIVA MAX? A couple of DR's are adapting the Jim Lehrer novel VIVA MAX! into a musical literally as we speak.
-
Well I guess it will keep them occupied for awhile.
-
On the issue of news coverage:
Whenever there is a developing story, the cable news networks tend to “stay on point” even if there is not at the moment any “new” news (this is to prevent channel shopping by folks trying to keep up with “the latest”). To mark time while events unfold, the producers tend to have their on screen folks concentrate on the most “exciting” elements of the scenario – which does seem like hyping the event; however, if you watch for a while (I’m on news about 18 hrs a day (I sleep with the bedroom TV on the Fox News Channel) you get a generally balanced view of things; however, someone tuning in for 15 minutes or so will probably get hit with a hyped-up recap of the most exciting tidbit available (A potentially storm ravaged Manhattan and it’s consequences to Wall Street and Broadway is a lot more exciting than a report on the potential devastation of soy beans crops in Delaware.)
The news broadcasts regularly mention that the information is projections (that may well change) and that predictions are based on statistical models. They never said NYC would get devastated by a type 2-3 Hurricane; they never said the NYC would be hit by the eye of a Tropical Storm (neither one of which happened); they did say that NYC was most likely going to experience a “significant” weather event, and that precautions should be taken (both of which came to pass).
I spent most of last week stuck in a trailer minding grandlads, and was fated to endure local broadcast TV. I do not think that “The View”, “Oprah” or ‘Judge Judy” give a better insight into reality than does Fox News.

I can recall only one bad experience with a blood test. The technician seemed like she knew what she was doing, but within hours after the test I had a brown and blue bruise that ran from the crook of my arm to halfway to my wrist. It was ugly.
-
Don't ever let a student try to take blood. There was a small blood geyser.
-
Today's experience at the lab really has me rattled. I know I'm not the easiest draw in the world, but taking coumadin requires a check at least once a month to determine dosage. I will try again tomorrow on my way to meet DN/goddaughter Lauren for our pre-wedding manicures and if it's unsuccessful again I'll call the doctor's office.
-
Yes, I have developed a Pavlovian fear response to blood draws due to so many botched times. I just tell the phlebotomists right off the bat they have once chance and if they fail I'm out of there. I also try to drink a LOT of water before I go in so that my veins are extra special full. :)

Well, DR JMK, it didn't help today that there was some lady out in the hallway ranting and raving about how beat up she was from her experience there earlier...

"... if you watch for a while (Im on news about 18 hrs a day (I sleep with the bedroom TV on the Fox News Channel) you get a generally balanced view of things..."
I pray you will pardon me for saying it, but anyone who is on Fox news 18 hours a day is more likely to be living a koyannisqatsi existence.
I recommend you watch the BBC.
-
Don't ever let a student try to take blood. There was a small blood geyser.
I am reminded of a "Will and Grace" episode. Stan is in the hospital and everyone thinks he's had a heart attack. Will, Grace, Jack and Rosario get into a contest to see who Karen will turn to -- in other words, who does she trust more/like best/think most highly of.
Karen learns of this from a doctor who has overheard and sets in motion a series of pranks.
For Grace, she tells her she needs Grace's blood (Grace is deathly afraid of needles). A student nurse with no experience is brought in to do the deed. Grace freaks.
-
I recommend you watch the BBC.
Oh sure - reruns of Kitchen Nightmares, Star Trek, and Dr. Who! - they rarely do news.

from George:
That's the way our library system works, too. Once a talking or e-book checked out, it's checked out for the full three weeks and it can't be checked in. The only thing that can happen (from what I understand) is that if you've put in a request for the title and you get notified that it's now available, but you don't actually check it out, you can choose to not take it and it'll go to the next person.
Today I received a call from the library telling me how to "return" my e-book. Silly clueless me, I had to do it through adobe, not the library.
Apparently all of our e-books are shared throughout the state, not our local library systems. Is it the same in Washington?

Thanks to all for the comments on Abby......this is the first time in MY WHOLE LIFE that there has not been at least ONE pet in the house......
It's quiet.

I've just had a phone call from our DR vixmom: some flooding in the basement, and they have no power and no ability to use their cell phones. She called me from work.
She sends her love and says they are all fine; dry ice is keeping the refrigerator food cold, and that the damage was far worse with Hurricane Gloria.
I'm off to run errands.
I'm glad she called you & thanks for the update. Too bad it isn't her office that is without power instead of her house.
-
Little effect from Irene on my part.
I'm glad you haven't had any damage. I need to call my friend in Perkasie.
CONTINUED HEALING VIBES FOR YOUR DM!!!!!

I just came from the vampire's blood lab, where I was needled once in each arm, but no blood was drawn. When they offered to try getting it from the back of my hand, I said, "Let's just forget it for today."
:( Will you wait until after the wedding? Couldn't they use someplace besides your hand?

DR Dan (the Man), I could tell from the demeanor of today's tech that the result would not be good. She was very tentative and not at all confident.
I suppose it is awkward to ask for a different tech.

DR Ron Pulliam--
I thought of the same thing--I remembered that there was a blooper clip of this scene--Debra Messing couldn't stop laughing:

Odd, I used to have that problem when I was young & my veins were small.
I have the same thing happen, Ginny, and unfortunately I now have to have regular blood draws since I'm on cholesterol meds. I have had the phlebotomists actually reach their "quota" of attempts on me. It's horrifying.

I see my post ended up in the quote again.

When they have trouble finding my veins (which has only happened twice) I ask them to use a butterfly needle.
Of course, this post makes no sense in the context of this page.
;D
I never heard of a butterfly needle, wish I had know about that way back when.

I'm glad you won't be delaying the test. Maybe if you call the lab & ask to speak to the person in charge you can find out who the best people are for you to see.

Well, the interview is over. And now we wait.
Well...that was quick. I have a new boss. I don't know when she'll start, but I'd heard (from people who weren't part of the invterviews at all!) that she was already signing contracts.
VIBES YOU LIKE HER VERY MUCH!!!!

Well, it's been a summer. 4 shows opened in 4 weeks, another in rehearsal (Nunsense) and one in the process of casting ( Parade) and school starting on Wednesday for me. Like I said, it's been a summer.
That's all I have.
Hi Matthew. :)

From DR Jose:
I actually think it's the first show of mine that John and Alyssa have seen. They had a great time. They visited the "schoolhouse" during intermission, and the trombone player talked with John since John has been playing trombone for about two years now. After the show, I took them around the walk-around, and one of the stagehands even gave Alyssa a ride in the surrey!
:D
Thanks for the vibes for my friend. This is only the beginning for her. She will need to apply for financial aid, if it is available, from the government. I hoping at the least friends will be able to remove the trees off of her house.
More vibes to your friend. Who knows how long it'll take them to set up the financial aid system, but vibes that they don't make it too complicated!
Thank you. I have no idea how applying works or what will be offered. Loans might not even be an option for her if she can't pay them back.

Picked up the check disc of Nudie - we watched some of it there and it looks very good. I asked that the menu be kept simple and it is and extremely easy to find things and navigate. He'd kept the two Easter eggs from the DVD as Easter eggs, but I'm having them moved to the special features section. I'll watch tonight all the way through.

UPS has notified us our shipment of wine will arrive on the 31st & someone must be here to sign for it. We were rather baffled as we haven't ordered wine. Eventually Keith figured out who must have sent it. I hope there is a mix of red & white, and that I like the white option.

Topic of the Day: I was three years old in 1969. ::)
;)
I'll have to think about this one.
Well, I wasn't even born in 1939, but I still like THE WIZAARD OF OZ.

Since the beginning of May I have only driven once, about two months ago, and it was difficult to do so. Today I drove to PT and it wasn't more painful than doing other activities. :) I felt safe driving which too. :D
It was a pleasure driving my car & listening to MY music. Since I was on my own time schedule I went for a walk in Lithia Park along the creek after PT.

That's nice, Jane. I'm glad you had a good day.

TOD---Of course, Hello Dolly! Another all-time favorite from 1969 is The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, though I didn't see it until years later.

I, of course, was way too young to have seen any movies in 1969.

from George:
That's the way our library system works, too. Once a talking or e-book checked out, it's checked out for the full three weeks and it can't be checked in. The only thing that can happen (from what I understand) is that if you've put in a request for the title and you get notified that it's now available, but you don't actually check it out, you can choose to not take it and it'll go to the next person.
Today I received a call from the library telling me how to "return" my e-book. Silly clueless me, I had to do it through adobe, not the library.
Apparently all of our e-books are shared throughout the state, not our local library systems. Is it the same in Washington?
It's not the same for Timberland. We're our own library system and we've chosen not to participate in the state-wide consortium for downloadables. This way our selectors get to choose specifically what they want for our patrons. We could've, if we wanted, but we didn't want.

I was surprised as we have a large library system. On the other hand it wasn't that long ago the system was bankrupt & the libraries closed. When they returned it was with limited hours which have increased some. I expect going with the state, if there was an option not to, was cost effective. It sure takes a LONG time for books to become available.

...but before I go...Clint Eastwood's "A Star is Born" Remake, Starring Beyoncé, May Push Back Production (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/154021-Clint-Eastwoods-A-Star-is-Born-Remake-Starring-Beyonc-May-Push-Back-Production)
The musical remake of "A Star is Born," to be produced and directed by Clint Eastwood and feature Grammy winner Beyoncé, is now in talks to begin production later than scheduled, according to Deadline.com. The performer announced that she was pregnant at MTV's Video Music Awards Aug. 28.
Beyoncé has signed on to play the role of Esther Blodgett, the small-time nightclub singer who eventually achieves international stardom, previously played by Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, among others. The Warner Bros. project was set to begin production as early as February 2012.
Discuss.

*I did John Williams' Best Original Score Oscar campaign on this one. We got the nomination, but did not win the statuette.
I always felt that we should have won. Bacharach may have had the Best Song with "Raindrops," but Williams' music for THE REIVERS was magnificent.
That it was. Maybe my favorite of his outside of his song fro "The Long Goodbye."

I haven't heard from my friend Carol today, but I have seen flooded areas in around her house.

FJL, are you working on a Viva Max project? Obviously, that movie holds some magic here in San Antonio.
-
Watching "It's a Pleasure!" with Sonja Henie, which is a laugh-riot about alcoholism with a few wife-beating jokes thrown in.
A pleasure it ain't.
-
Lest we forget, 1969 was also the release of Once Upon A Time In The West in the US, and it also gave us the supremely weird and egomaniacal Can Hieronymous Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness? starring Anthony Newley.
RE: Hieroymus Merkin, I think either of the songs, "I'm All I Need" or "Oooo, What a Son of Bitch I Am" would be good for the next Guy Haines album.
-
Got an offer today with my business partner to write the San Antonio dining guide book for Globe Pequot Press. They do a series called Food Lovers' Guides. I don't know if they'll except us to write the book (due in November) for $150, but it was certainly nice to be asked. And it should be fun, if I eat wisely.

Dialogue from "It's a Pleasure":
Man sees another man hitting a woman: Hey, stop that.
Woman: You keep it out of it. I'm his wife.
Man: Yeah, but he was hitting you.
Woman: He's got to have some fun, doesn't he?
-
The end of the movie features a snow scene with Sonja Henie and all the extras wearing Brazilian costumes, except they have big cockatoos are their heads, which are Australian birds. And "Tico Tico" plays in the background. I want whatever the director was smoking when he came up with that one.
It scared J.B.

I guess I scared everyone else away.

Since JMK has decreed I am shameless, let me live up to my moniker and say that I have spent a rather deliriously delirious evening watching the Nudie Musical Blu and Ray check disc. First off, the image looks absolutely amazing on my TV, so that made me very happy as every TV is different. It looked great over at the authoring place, but even better on my TV. Of course, if those who've had their TVs "professionally" calibrated by these people who seem to think films should have no color and be yellow view it then I have no idea how it will look. But I now know that the color on MY TV (which is how it came out of the box) is perfect. The disc looks exactly like it did at the lab and the authoring place. I really went for the old saturated color look which is what all of us wanted - the theatrical prints never got it right - they were timed by the producer without my involvement, or the involvement of my co-director and the cameraman. The color on this transfer is what it looked like when we were shooting - the sets of the film within a film stuff were purposely designed to be VERY colorful and garish and now they are.
I went for a slightly stylized look for the beginning of The Lights and the Smiles - it's VERY golden/yellow as it's supposed to look like she's stepped out into bright sunshine so that the contrast of cutting from that to night in Hollywood would be extreme - and now it is. The timing on the DVD is closer to the theatrical prints but I like this stylized look much better.
When watching the documentary, which has quite a few clips from the DVD, you can see just how much better the color is on the Blu and Ray - the color is so wonderful to have and you see it instantly right from the Paramount logo. The main title drawings are unbelievably sharp. And from my viewing distance the grain is very natural and not overt save for the shots that are opticals, and even those have been dramatically improved, which just goes to show if you take time dealing with the opticals you can make them at least look of a piece with what comes before and after.
-
I watched everything. One neat feature is if you shut the disc off mid-movie and then start it up again the next day you get a screen that says "you left off here, do you want to continue" - and you see a little frame from where you left off. The menu is simple and easy to navigate. We have to fix a few things - the Blu and Ray credit pages go by in about a half-second each - so I'll have them up on screen for five seconds each, with seven seconds for the Kickstarter angel page. They'd already figured out one navigation fix in the chapter menu - that's an easy one. But that's it - everything else is perfect. I gather they used a high bit-rate and the lossless mono track sounds very good (HD Master Audio). Another fun thing is our new Blu-Ray Kritzerland opening logo.
-
Did he say shameless or sleeveless? (I must have read that fast.)

John G - It's based on the Jim Lehrer novel, though, not the movie.

THanks, JRand.

Laura - are you going to be able to go back and put up favorite old photos?
The format and backdrop really works well for your already terrific work.

Not much else to say.
Sweet dreams, goodnight everyone.

I actually love the song I'm All I Need.
As do I.

I think we understand the sentiment, Pogue.

And we're definitely doing the Nudie soundtrack as a standalone CD - it's about time, I think - it will have the soundtrack, a couple of things that have never been on CD before and Grant's arrangements used on the documentary.

Good Evening!
My bus ride in this morning was nice and easy. No traffic at all at the Lincoln Tunnel.
-
And once I was back in Manhattan, I immediately took care of some errands. Those too were nice and easy.
-
Then I had lunch with former/E&T DR Jason. He's doing well, and he leaves for his three-month gig in Japan a month from today.
*We had lunch at East of Eighth, and since I'm on their email list, my lunch entree was on them thanks to their birthday promotion.
-
And then the rest of my was spent shopping (window and otherwise), eating and catching up with some friends. And to top it all off, it was another gorgeous day in NYC.
-
And in a few hours I will be hopping on a bus back down to DC. I was supposed to take Amtrak, but they're still dealing with damaged tracks between NYC and Philadelphia. Luckily, I checked my train status earlier tonight instead in the morning.
-
~~~~~VIBES TO THE VIXFAMILY~~~~~
And now I really must try to get a few hours sleep. As soon as I get off the bus in DC I'll be going into rehearsal, so...
Goodnight.
