Well, you've read the notes, the notes rid themselves of the Sword of Damocles, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently reading up on Damocles and his damn sword.

And the word of the day is: EXPOSTULATE!

Good morning, all! New York appears to be under a torrential rainfall, and the sound of the heavy rain awoke me around 6am. I was dreaming about the cast of "Christmas Up the Holler," but we all seemed to be working in a bookstore at Christmas: I was trying to transfer a phone call from Favid Lutken to the order dept. and our stage manager Meg was using the photocopier. It was msot peculiar.
Today is another Encores! day, so I'll see what Joshie has ready for me to peruse: I think one of the numbers is the Act Two reprise of "Not A Day Goes By," and I may be working on the various transition sections of the title song. We'll see.
More coffee!

Morning all.
That is all.
-
Late rising for me and then I got to the office to find an e-mail sent at 11:35 last night asking me to review some things for my boss in time for her meeting at 9am. I just finished that so I'm on to other things.

I sometimes dream about being a writer but last night was not what I have in mind.
I had a dream that I was a writer on some kind of internet salon-type website and I received my latest assignment by Yahoo Messenger: I was to write an article about a mayor of Cheyenne, WI, during the days of the Wild West. I became very depressed because I not only had no interest in the Wild West and its politicians but also because I knew I would have to spend the day at a library that was off in the boondocks somewhere.
Why can't I have dreams where I'm to do a pool-side interview with Cheyenne Jackson instead?

Watching LAW & ORDER: SVU last night reminded me of this.
Does anybody remember this show and it's title?
Back in the late 1960s or early 70s, there was a very popular audience-interactive show done in Los Angeles, and (I believe) in other parts of the country.
In Los Angeles, it did not take place in a theater, but in some large Masonic-like hall with lots of rooms, located on Highland Avenue, a block or two south of the Bowl.
Obviously, my memory is very fuzzy on this, but I think the title of the show was a woman's name and it was set in Italy sometime before WW2.
There were no seats. The audience would come in, stand and watch an opening scene(s) being played, then they would break into groups and follow one of the characters (of their choosing), who who then play scenes with other characters. Again, the audience would choose a character, then follow him/her. This would go on for a couple of hours.
A person could come back to the show again and again, each time following a different character and see the play from a totally new perspective each time.
So, anybody remember this play and what it was called?

Yes, that's it.
It was at the American Legion Hall in Los Angeles.
I thought it was done in the 60s or 70s, but it was in the 1980s.

DR Jane sorry to hear about your shoulder. You must love your nook for that reason!
I can't believe how much i am loving my kindle!
That reminds me--I discovered something about borrowing e-books from libraries. Like a regular library, you can borrow books only for a few weeks at a time and at the end of that period, the book is automatically made inaccessible on your Kindle (this probably goes for Nooks, too.) But I found that as long as you you do not allow your Kindle to connect to the internet, you can keep the borrowed book beyond the expiration date. Back in October, I put THE NIGHT CIRCUS on hold and it did not become available to me until the second week in December. I downloaded it, but because I'm still slogging though the Joe Papp biography, I've had no chance to even begin reading it. However, since the time I imported the book, I've never turned on my Whysperlync (My Kindle is 1st generation.) I've received the e-mail message telling me that the lending period has expired, but THE NIGHT CIRCUS is still in my contents and is readable. Eventually, I will get to it (as soon as Joe Papp shuffles off his mortal coil, that is...)

Blanche is once again in the "Cone of Shame" because she has this spot on her paw she won't stop licking. This syndrome has an actual name that's something like "licking granularium" or something like that. If we can't get her to stop, are you ready for the cure? Prozac. (For her, not us).

Never saw it and don't know what corner of my trivial brain that was pulled from. I remember, though, standing in line at TKTS on several occasions waiting to see something else and the "Tamara" pushers were practically giving away tickets. The appeal of not having to stand in line almost won out.

That makes sense. Although that means you can't view the internet or download any new books. And the person next after you in the library queue is still waiting.

Heigh-ho!
It is Thursday in Oakland of CA.
I was home sick yesterday.
I have this sinus condition that goes back and forth from being "sensitive to allergens" to being sinusitis with side effects (i.e., a buttload of other stuff).
Literally, sadly.
You go and go. And when you think you cannot possibly go again, you do.
But that's behind me today, so to speak.

Jennifer, I have to wonder if "keeping" an e-book would really prevent the next person "in line" from getting it.
I've never taken an ebook out from the library. But I know DR Jane does. And I think you have to wait your turn. And I thought the next person only got it when the person before was done. Maybe someone who takes out ebooks can tell us.

DR JMK if I had thought he was being clever or sly or ironic - I might have enjoyed it more, since seeing an ego deflated can be enjoyable. To me, though, he seemed smug and self-serving - not as pleasant to watch.
I am not particularly looking forward to Billy Crystal on the Oscar show - since he makes it all about HIM......

So...
My mom's friend, Susan, dropped off a Thank You package for me yesterday at the house. I was able to arrange some comps for her and my parents to see MY FAIR LADY. My mom sent an email to me last night at 2:17am:
"I will open the card for you rather than mailing it or do you want me to mail it to you.
Will keep the wine & candy."
Well...
While I was in a lesson a little while ago, my mom left me a voicemail stating that she had opened the card. She then read to me what Susan had written. And that there was a $50 bill in their too.
"I'll just keep it all here."
WHAT?!?!?!?
I just left a voicemail for her telling her that she could have easily sent me the card, even after she had already opened it and read it to me. I would like to SEE the card for myself. I also told her I would donate the $50 to a charity of my choosing. We'll see what happens.

DR Jenn, you do wait in a queue for books (I was number 80-something when I first put NIGHT CIRCUS on hold.) But I agree with DR JMK that just because I'm preventing the book from being deleted that I am holding up the queue. Once my borrowing period expired, someone else move up and was able to download the book.

DR JRand, what do you used for your converting? Last year when I began the same project, I used the Dazzle video capture device. Problem was, I did not like the software that came with it and the Dazzle will work only with that software.
Last night I ordered this device (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VM60I8/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details) from Amazon. It is supposed to be able to work with any software (hopefully, with Nero.)

DR Jane sorry to hear about your shoulder. You must love your nook for that reason!
I can't believe how much i am loving my kindle!
I do but after my shoulder popped even holding the Nook was difficult. Last night I put the Nook down & began my library book. :)
I have another large book on hold for me at the library. I would read it on the Nook if it were available on eBooks.

DR Jane: I've been reading your interesting posts about your cruise. I've often thought about doing a cruise but I very easily get seasick so I don't think I can risk it.
We have done the Alaska cruise twice & only once did we have rough waters, the last night on open seas back to Seattle. We were traveling with two people, besides myself, who get sick easily. We all managed to sleep through some of it. The bigger the ship the more stable it is & we had mid ship rooms not too high up.

DR Jose: I can top that mom story, I think.
This year's visit included trips down memory lane. As always, mention of spending time in Asheville NC with my Aunt Belle and Uncle George Pulliam was among the fondest memories. My Aunt Belle was a hell of a cook and you always felt at home at 26 First Street, Biltmore NC (adjacent to Asheville, but a community unto itself).
While both my aunt and uncle are deceased, I have strong memories of my last visit with my Uncle George who was gravely ill. He would sit in his recliner, blankets wrapped around him, oxygen tube in his nose, and he would converse. He also took in my aunt's high-pitched, near-hysteria jags over how traumatic it all was for her. My uncle died without a will as did my aunt. Most of their property went over to the state, sorry to say, even though my father had once offered to buy the house and land from my aunt, completely maintain it and alllow her to live there the rest of her days. She declined.
Over the 20-plus years since my uncle's death, I've lamented I had no remembrance of him. This past Christmas, while my mom and I were recalling the good times, I voiced my wonder over what had become of my uncle's tiger-eye ring. He always wore it, and I figured he'd have left it to someone, possibly my dad.
My mom looked at me rather strangely and said, "I have it. George gave it to me to give to you." I was flabbergasted. And only that incredulous expression was on my face. "I told you I had it for you, but you expressed no interest in having it!" my mother exclaimed.
More flabbergasted astonishment on my face.
"I would never have turned down that ring. I've wished I had it since Uncle George died. When is it you 'think' you told me about it."
My mother was stunned. "It was when I wanted to give you your dad's pocket watch", she declared. I thought about that...there was a gold watch my dad received from GE when he retired and my mom tried to give it to me after his death.
"I asked you to keep the watch 'for' me...safe here", I said. "I won't use it at work, and I'd rather know it was safe here."
But, I said, "you never said one word to me about that ring."
She was flabbergasted, got up, went to her safe and retrieved it.
I now have my Uncle George's tiger-eye ring. It needs resizing, but I'm over the moon about it.
-
Tiger Eye is great for protection and for drawing positive energy to the wearer.
-
That look like an interesting device DR DtM.
However I borrowed the DVD recorder we use at the theatre. I attached my VCR to it and then both to a small TV I got at Goodwill for $6.99. My brother did the final adjustments for me Monday, since I couldn't figure it out (the recorder needed to be attached to the TV so I could see the menu) - and so now it works.
Sometimes I use Format Factory (a free file converter) to convert files to AVI so that I can burn them to DVD - these are files I sometimes download from the Inner Web that won't play after they are burned. Also easy to use FF to convert MP3's to WAV files and other things.....

Great story.

Enjoy your ring, DR Ron Pulliam!

Had a sweet eBay experience. I won a Farmer item from a seller in SLC and told him about my background and my Dad's museum there, and it turned out he was from a military family too. Well the package came today and he had wrapped it in a huge collage of Farmer images he had printed out.
I had actually thought for a minute when I sent the PM that I shouldn't have mentioned by SLC background to him, but he seemed genuinely touched.

In 1993, there was a one-night reunion of the original cast of "Company" with Dean Jones that was supposed to have been filmed. Does anybody know if there is a film or any recording of that?
It played at the Vivien Beaumont, and I believe it was filmed for the NYPL Theatre Collection.

I finessed, I wrote about ten new pages, then had a sandwich and onion rings, then picked up no packages, and am now listening to half of our new master (the other score contained therein will be done by tomorrow.
-
Most of what I wrote today was a love letter to Laurie Beechman. I was writing about our work sessions and doing the arrangements, so I put on her Andrew Lloyd Webber CD just to hear them again briefly - and I just burst into big old stupid tears hearing that voice and that album.

Nothing stupid about those tears. She had a singular gift that has touched many of us, and through your albums, she continues to inspire and, yes, break our hearts.

I've proofed two more DEAREST ENEMY numbers, "Full Blown Roses" and "The Hermits." Lordy, I hope these fixes are easily accomplished.

Here comes a bit more snow.....

I've written twenty pages so far, so am ahead for once. I'll do two pages at some point tonight. But what I wanted to happen has happened. I'm getting through the year 1995 in thirty to forty pages instead of 130.

Blanche is once again in the "Cone of Shame" because she has this spot on her paw she won't stop licking. This syndrome has an actual name that's something like "licking granularium" or something like that. If we can't get her to stop, are you ready for the cure? Prozac. (For her, not us).
Have you tested her for allergies and/or changed her food?

DR Jane: I've been reading your interesting posts about your cruise. I've often thought about doing a cruise but I very easily get seasick so I don't think I can risk it.
Two words, DR Doug R: River Cruise
Was it completely calm?

Jennifer, I have to wonder if "keeping" an e-book would really prevent the next person "in line" from getting it.
I forgot about that when I said I would test the theory. First I'll make sure there isn't anyone waiting for the book.

DR Jane: I've been reading your interesting posts about your cruise. I've often thought about doing a cruise but I very easily get seasick so I don't think I can risk it.
Two words, DR Doug R: River Cruise
I spent 10 years of my life as Music Director on a river cruise line. Oy and vey.
I didn't know this. When was that & which river?
Speaking of cruises, Keith & I both think an Alaska cruise with your children would be a better than the Disney cruise.

I've been free of backache for years - until I woke with lower back pain today!
Bummer!! Wishes you are soon free of the back pain again.

I was surprised I had to wait to get an eBook thinking it would be immediate. I expect, just like regular books, the library only has so many that they purchase.

Have you ever tried the netipot? They make one now that is just a squeezer. A lot of people i know who have sinus problems use this (i do, my sis does, her best friend does, her husband does). It really clears out your nasal passages!
Does it work better than the ones in the plastic bottles from the drug store?

Yes, DR Jane, it was. The only bumps I really remember were the times we hit the side of a lock - probably just a "tap" that sounded worse to me as a newbie.

??? I'm sorry. ;D
When Craig was in Romania I hated having to open his mail.

How do you know this for sure? Did you check if you have any over due book fees on your account. ;)

We've had a nice surprise visit from Rob and Mary Linda. They were shopping near here and called to ask if they could stop by. We sent Rob to The Jug for burgers for dinner and they've now headed home.

This has been going on for months. She got a nick on her forepaw that she started chewing at once it scabbed over and she just won't leave it alone.

I would love to see a photo of the ring. Did you wear your father's watch while you were at your mothers?
This is a great story, however I don't think it tops DR Jose's story. Your mother simply combined two stories into one and she did keep the ring for you. :)

They did warn us of that and they told us not to stick our heads or limbs out the patio doors while passing through the locks, because some locks are only 12 meters wide and the boat is 11-4!
-
DR Jose I can understand her not wanting to mail you the wine or candy unless they were something special. The wine can easily be saved for your next visit possibly making it easier to mail with the card. Opening the card. :o :o :o

I'm glad they warned you so after the initial shock you could remember the cause & that it happens. The narrow locks, the reason the ship can't have balconies which would be very nice to have on a river cruise.

Not when there's a well connected NYC political family of attorneys involved. Thank Heavens my sisters and I had the courage to bet the farm on a pretty upscale Manhattan law firm when our Uncle died intestate, as I'm sure the shyster who made off with my *other* Uncle's estate (and Foundation) would have scooped this up, too. He actually ended up folding out of court because he knew it would be a disaster.

Perhaps I should invest in a tiger eye ring. I saw Surgeon #3 today. The problem is in the thoracic part of my spine (10 & 11 discs). He said that this is the most "fragile" area of my spine. The two disc have pressed together and caused a bulge that has to be removed. However, the doctor said that there is only a 50/50 chance that I will ever walk again. He said, "I wish you had come to see me six months ago, and I could have more easily predicted success." Now he is afraid that the nerves may be completely dead, rather than just damaged.
Wow!

Tomorrow Night on Extreme Makeover Home Edition they are doing their Joplin show. Seven houses in seven days. Jon (former DR jhvw) worked on house number 1. He did some other things too, so he very well may be in the show. I do know at one point he was carrying a banner. They had 13,000 volunteers for the show that week. They did a lot of other cool things for Joplin. It's the series finale and from what I've read, they started planning this immediately after the tornado. My mom would love a recording of it. I can't do it with my cable DVR,so I'm wondering if anyone can record it for me. It would really mean a lot. Thanks

Pretty but small. We were lucky on our Baltic & Alaskan cruise most the time it was warm enough to sit outside. Funny when we go on a warm weather cruise it was too wet to sit outside. The balcony was useful for our swim clothes & shoes. We did walk outside at least once a day. Usually the port side of a ship is the one with the view, not this time.

No, Jeff is correct...well, at least that's not how our library works. It will be checked in in the library's system. The library doesn't get the check in information from your device, so you can keep the book (and be able to read it) for practically forever...as long as you don't turn on whatever wi-fi-type connection you have and relink with Amazon's system.
