Well, you've read the notes, reading the notes means never having to say you're sorry, and now it is time for you to post until the sorry cows come home.

Perhaps I will run across Mr. Simbulan.

We saw LOVE STORY (and read the MAD parody LOVELY STORY) at the time it was released.  People in the audience yelling and crying...."Don't die, Jenny.....don't die!!"   It was crazy......but it was nice.....

How do I begin......

ZUMBA went okay last night.....there were only eight of us.

My cousin's ankle is still sore.....so there is NO Zumba this morning......just a bit of snow on the ground.  I am okay with both of them.

I was looking at a book about the making of the first Star Trek movie.......and there were some Production Reports printed in said book.  I could understand everything there except one thing listed under Lighting......

My question for ASK BK DAY:

What is a Wigwag?

Good morning, all! Not a single dream that I can remember last night. Can you believe it?

I hope that by noon I will have finished the notes on Disc 4. I have asked two of my singers, Margaret Jane and Zach, many times now for their bios for the recording and they are the only ones of the sixteen who have sent nothing but "okays" and "soon."  I've threatened to write my own for them, something like this:
"Margaret Jane" supported herself through the Ellis Island Vocal Academy working as a pole dancer and occasional bricklayer.  Favorite roles are Carmen in Aida and Barbara of Seville. This season at the Met she is covering the roles of Olympia in Les contes d'Hoffmann and the title role of Boris Godunov."

More coffee! And meds.

And thank you, Bob Merrill, for writing those funny lines about Carmen in Aida and Barabara of Seville!

Ben used to do the funniest impression of Arthur Siegel at a recording session. And then I worked with Ben and found it was completely accurate.

Arthur was one of the kindest and most generous men i've ever met. He and Kaye Ballard were a hoot to work with.

Betsy and I popped in the new BD of DOWNTON ABBEY and rewatched the first episode to see what they had edited out of the US version--really odd little snippets here and there, not exactly sure why they do that.

Then we skipped ahead to "this" week's episode.  Wow!  Who would have thought Mary would kill Richard and marry her father, and that the Countess would take up with the chauffeur after he dumps Sybil.

Received the Blu-ray of SPELLBOUND but I don't think it was worth the upgrade from the DVD - of which I preferred the higher contrast. I'm going to be much more selective about the need to upgrade my DVDs. Something like CLEOPATRA is worth it but too many have only a marginal difference and it's not as if I watch the same film over and over again.

"Love Story" -- I was in the Navy and attending a school in Bainbridge, Maryland in the fall of 1970.  I had been in boot camp all summer, so if there had been any noise about this film, I hadn't heard it.

I drove into Baltimore one fine Saturday morning and putzed around, shopping and checking out the lay of the land.  The road back out of Baltimore was littered with roadside shopping strips, including one that had a movie marquee you could read a quarter of a mile before you got to it.  This marquee indicated a major studio preview that night (and not late, either).  Curious, and never having seen a sneak preview, I pulled into the shopping strip.  There was a restaurant where I had an early dinner and then I stood in line for the preview.

The preview was "Love Story".  I had not heard of the film's having been made (which is odd to me now, because I used to be on top of stuff like that).  But I was mesmerized by the movie and charmed and swept up in it.  I wrote a friend that weekend telling him what I saw and what I thought.  One of my thoughts was that it was going to be a huge hit.  Funny enough, I got a letter from him early the next week (before he had seen mine) and he had previewed the film and found it "light" on importance.  He figured it would do middling business and disappear.  He didn't like the Lai score, either.

Go figure.

On the one hand, I can sit back and nitpick SMASH to pieces.  But on the other hand, like DR Jose has said, it's just a TV show.  And I do like Debra Messing, Anjelica Houston and Meagan Hilty is growing on me. As long as the drama and intrigue and characters hold my interest, I'll be watching

I remember when Oprah ran a 40th Anniversary of Love Story program, with the reunion of the stars.
Ryan O'Neal confessed that he had a huge crush on his co-star during filming and asked her to go away with him.
Problem was, she was married to the producer of the film, Robert Evans.

I've finished the notes, the Man from Philadelphia has signed off on them, and all is good. I've got a bio to write for Zak Stains from the bundle of notes he sent me, and I'm on a good schedule for next Monday's delivery of everything to New World Records.

I am puzzled about DR  JohnG: did he undergo surgery or was it postponed? He sent me an email saying I'd be getting updates from a friend, but I had the impression last night that it was not happening today.

Tonight, i'm having dinner with my friend Joseph Rubin, and I need to vacuum this place so that when he walks into the apartment, he doesn't think he's walking on gravel.

We saw LOVE STORY (and read the MAD parody LOVELY STORY) at the time it was released.  People in the audience yelling and crying...."Don't die, Jenny.....don't die!!"   It was crazy......but it was nice.....

How do I begin......

I've never seen LOVE STORY. I think I have purposefully avoided it.

It's lightly snowing as I ride the train to Philly.  The woods along the river look like they've been lightly sprinkled with confectioner's sugar.  I would take a picture, but I'm afraid it would just come out a blur.

I'm willing to bet that the Theme to LOVE STORY was the most popular jewelry box music for years after the movie came out.  My mom had two of them.

(Two music boxes, that is.)

I love the part in the film "What's Up Doc?" when Barbra Streisand bats her eyelashes at Ryan O'Neal and says "Love means never having to say you're sorry."
To which he replies, "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

I've been thinking the same thing since the subject of LOVE STORY came up.  For me it made watching LS worth it.  After hearing all the hype about the movie I was very disappointed & statement was about the dumbest thing I ever heard.

The thing is maybe she changed since she was on IDOL when you disliked her.  Or maybe she is actually a decent actress and you won't recognize her.

Sometimes there can be actors that i'm not crazy about, so I think i won't watch the show because of them. And then i end up watching and loveing them in it (one example is Juliana M in The Good Wife). I wasn't crazy about her. But now this is one of my favorite shows and i love her in it.

Then I went to see Merrily We Roll Along...

It was good. I'm still very fond of the original book and score, so there are still parts of the newer and current versions that don't sit well on my ear, but... -And, as was confirmed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sondheim even tweaked a few more lyrics.... Some even as recent/late as 4:00pm this afternoon.

I'll be seeing it again next week, and it will be nice to see it once the production has settled a bit - and when the cast is not so tired after a long week of tech.

I was able to get meet up with Celia Keenan-Bolger afterwards backstage. She really is one of my favorite people. She just makes me happy, makes me smile. She does some great work as Mary. -And the other featured actresses, Elizabeth Stanley and Betsy Wolfe, are quite wonderful too.

Thank you, Jose, for the "Merrily" report. I love Celia Keenan-Bolger, but wasn't sure that she was right for the role of Mary. Glad to hear that all went well.

Has BK been on this board today? It's unusual not to hear from him, unless I missed something.
I hope that he's ok.

You're welcome, DR Dear Lurker Iris. Truth be told, I wasn't sure just how Celia was going to work as Mary, but she does. Her acting is wonderful, so her retrograde progression is done very well. And I'm so excited to see her again in Peter & the Starcatcher during its Broadway incarnation. -And her brother, Andrew, will also be in Newsies. Their younger sisters are crazy-talented too.

I have finished entering fixes from proofer number one.  It's taken me most of the day and most of the evening.  I was selective about which I wanted to do - but I did quite a few, lots of commas until I started revolting against them - too many commas, Mozart, too many commas.  It gets ridiculous after a while and I may now go back and remove a few that impede the flow of a sentence in terms of the eye.  I don't give a flying Wallenda what the rules are, either.  If I'm trying to have rhythm in a sentence and there are six commas, the rhythm goes right into the toilet.  I do the important ones, but, you know, rules are made to be broken and plenty of lauded writers have done exactly that.  One thing I was repeatedly doing today that I don't love was doing a sentence like "My daughter Jenny was getting married."  And inserting "My daughter, Jenny, was getting married."  That's okay every now and then, but after a while it just bugs me.

So, I'm going to selectively remove a few and leave a few.

Too many commas,
Waking and pretending that they are few...

Thousands of commas,
Some I must redo...

Tonight, I saw a very good production of Hair.  The band and the singers were all quite good...for the most part.  No one at all was bad, but some singers were just a little weak.  The nudity was handled tastefully.  They were all just standing in a line at the back of the stage and not in direct light (sadly ;)).  But overall, very well done. :)

I never met a comma I didn't like.
