Title: THE NOTES THAT HAD NO PITHY OR ERUDITE THINGS
Post by: bk on February 15, 2012, 12:32:46 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes lacked pith and eruditeness, and now it is time for you to post until the pithy and erudite cows come home.

Had a 2 hour and 15 minute meeting yesterday. It was scheduled for 1 hour but it went well past. At least it wasn't contentious and full of shouting. I think some things actually got accomplished. Wonder of Wonder, Miracle of Miracles.

Oatmeal and a banana and cinnamon and coffee.

Anthony is taking tap dance lessons and he has class tonight.

Good morning, all! I slept well, with not a single dream I can remember. The alarm went off at 6:40 and I slept in until 8; it's going to be a lazy day.

I am listening to the late great Dory Previn this morning. I find her songs, with their vulnerability and desperation, absolutely devastating and heartbreaking.  I was really sorry to hear about her death yesterday.

So, the matinee of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS should be a nice change of mood. I'm going with Naked Hercules Zak Stains whom I've not seen in over six months, and it will be fun to catch up on gossip. I've got some notes on "I Beg Your Pardon" from DEAREST ENEMY to write up, and then I may begin the tax tallies.

Meds! More coffee!

I just checked my bank account on line and was surprised and pleased to find my Federal tax return deposited. There it will sit (in savings) until I decide if I want to use any of it.

I have to pay New York State this year and I have mailed in the return with instructions to withdraw the payment on the last possible day of April 17th.

I am mailing my State Taxes today, DR BEN.  I know it's early, but then I don't have to think about it anymore.  My Federal return, such as it was, paid my Car Insurance and my State Taxes.

So much for the windfall.

Wednesday is a good day....so far.  But I am skipping Zumba this morning again....just not up to the jumping around.

DR ELMORE we expect a full report after the Matinee.  What costumes are being worn, how is the hair......and we want to hear about the show, too.  Tell Mr Zak hello.

Where has DR JOSE been?  He isn't in River City yet, is he?

I loved the Woody Allen documentary when it was shown on American Masters.  I agree with BK about the proliferation of talking heads (Leonard Maltin--ugh!) And I was also disappointed in how dismissive the doc is of Allen's work post Crimes And Misdemeanors.  I realize there wasn't enough time to cover all of his films in this career phase, but it would have been nice if the doc makers took a second look at one or two.  Instead it's all a rush.  But otherwise, the documentary is wonderful.  I believe it comes out next week.

I've had a subconjunctival haemorrhage! A broken blood vessel in the eye.  I had one about 30 years ago and that time I flew into a panic and rushed to the hospital where they told me it's one of those things which happen for no obvious reason and is not serious - it takes about a week for the eye to clear.  It doesn't look pleasant though. Now, where are my dark glasses?

Apart from the general household waste bin, I have a bin in which all the recyclable material goes, which is collected once a week. Annoyingly, someone or some people keep putting their own rubbish in my bin. There's no need to do this because every house has its own bin. I've now moved the bin nearer my house so that, hopefully, I can spot who is doing this. One thing I hate is having other people's rubbish in my bin!

JohnG, if you can find them, you must, must, must get the two albums Wayne and Herbie did with incredible Brasilian singer-songwriter Milton Nascimento.  One is under Wayne's name and is called Native Dancer (Columbia) and the other is an A&M album simply called Milton.  Both are available on CD, though Native Dancer's mastering is wonky.

Got a fun compilation of some of Walter Wanderley's original Brasilian sides from the late fifties.  Liner notes were hilarious--Walter evidently signed a huge deal with Holiday Inn in the late sixties to be their featured "lounge act," where he was going to tour from Holiday Inn to Holiday Inn.  Unfortunately at his opening show he got so drunk he passed out on his organ by the third set and Holiday Inn pulled the plug on the tour.

I am back from the revival of HOW TO SUCCEED, which I really enjoyed. I don't know Nick Jonas from Menudo, but he is really quite wonderful as Finch. I adored Beau Bridges who made mw smile every tme he appeared, and I loved his "chipmunk" bit. Michael Urie is really funny as Frump, and I was thinking what a good Cornelius he would be in HELLO DOLLY! if he follows the career of Charles Nelsob Reilly. My friend Ellen Harvey was a hoot as Miss Jones, and in the pit I saw my friends Scott Kuney and Grace Paradise. Larruy Goldberg, who was the MNYMF MD for "The Brain From Planet X" led the tiny but mighty band.

Whil I'm not a great fan of the director's over-choreographed numbers. and he really blew the use of the kazoos in "I Believe In You," I thought this revival head and shoulders over the one with Matthew Broderick.

Now I want to see it again.

The liner notes were hilarious, saying that Walter's second set was written mostly by Johnnie Walker and that his head literally flopped down on the keyboard during the third, and that he was out cold for the rest of the night.  Somewhat horrifyingly, two of the "Cy" sisters from Quarteto em Cy (AKA The Girls from Bahia) had been flown up to sing with him, and they evidently were left standing there, mouths agape.

Elmore, glad you enjoyed the show. I love the piece, but I've hate the choreography on the three numbers I've seen so far from this production.

I really enjoyed Ralph Macchio in the national tour of the Des McAnuf production, despite the fact that the projections did not work during the first act.

Some termite people are coming to see if they need to do something.  Because we have some rotted wood, that's a very good idea.  I guess when they re-fi the house has to be in good shape to get those good rates.  So, the window stuff will get fixed, trees will be trimmed, and if they find termites, I suppose they'll tent the house.  If they need to do the latter, I'll suggest March 10 through 13, since I'll be in NY on those days.

Elmore, glad you enjoyed the show. I love the piece, but I've hate the choreography on the three numbers I've seen so far from this production.

I really enjoyed Ralph Macchio in the national tour of the Des McAnuf production, despite the fact that the projections did not work during the first act.

I don't know the director at all, but i think he's overrated and limited in talent; I would swear that after two numbers all the staging looked similar and what bothers me is the fact that he doesn't trust actors and singers to do their work without dragging in the important folk, the ones who move. In the great Act One Finale ("suddenly there is music in the sound of your name"), he can't let Finch and Rosemary do the number without dragging in all of the dancers to prance around. He needs a star with clout to turn on him and ask in rehearsal, do you want me to sing this number or do you want me to leave so all these unnecessary dancers can prance around on my moment?

The coffee break number, or a snippet from it, is the new clip on BlueGobo.com and the sexuality in the dance is awfully misplaced. The jitteriness is funny, but the body contortions seem to have nothing to do with the song or that moment in the show.

If Hammer was still cranking out vampire films, you could have picked up a few days work as an extra.

Hammer is actually back in business, with that new Daniel Radcliffe WOMAN IN BLACK film.

The Debbie Reynolds HAMMER Scopitone comes to mind for some reason

I love LuPone; I have ever since EVITA and my first hearing of THE BAKER'S WIFE.  She's fearless and demented, and that's a great combo for a diva.  There are too few these days.

I think Lonny Price is a good actor and limited director with no class or sense of style. His direction is lowbrow, aimed at a low IQ level and completely inelegant

Of course it was better; Matthew was not in this revival.

Last evening, one of the local news programs was showing this PSA that had been produced to promote a school levy in support of the city of Issaquah's Special School Election.  It showed a group of students singing "A Hard-Knock Life" with different lyrics promoting the School Levy.  Just as I was telling myself that the school district was pressing their luck using the song without permission; they interviewed the man who wrote the new lyrics.  The guilty party was Martin Charnin who had moved to Issaquah several years ago.  Gee, I gues he can do whatever he wants to with his lyrics.

we have a proper "Brown Betty" tea pot that we heat with boiling water  before starting the tea a,d which sits under a tea cozy for  the required  5 minute brewing time,  but we do use  tea bags for everyday use -  we do have tinned teas and tea balls for special ocassions  but its a lot of mess and bother to use everyday
