Well, you've read the notes, the notes were approved, and now it is time for you to post until the approved cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: APPERTAIN!
-
As noted in the notes, the new book is available for pre-order - we'll ship no later than the third week of April, but probably sooner. The first twenty-five orders will get a little something special. Signed hardcovers via the site are a bit cheaper than the book will be at other online venues. For those who like softcover, it will be on amazon at some point in the next few days. And the eBook should also be available, although that will take a bit longer. Of course, I like the hardcover best - it feels like a real book :) So, to do what need be done, just go to www.kritzerland.com - the book is on the home page.

The book has been ordered, BK! ;D

Good morning, all! I crawled into bed last night at 8pm and slept until 5:30am. I am moving about, feeling awake (sort of), and ready to head to Baltimore. I will leave here around 7:15, and head for Penn Station. The research won't take me long, i don't believe, since I'm only looking at theatre programs to verify songs and who performed them. I did ask to see a box of clippings, so we'll see if I learn anything from that.
Last night I had more strange dreams, including one about a sojourn in the Hamptons and being asked by Al Collins, who retired from the Drama Book Shop around 1983, to deliver a book to Ted Chapin. I got back to 79th Street and there was a carnival of some sort going on, and that's about all I remember now about the dream.
I have no other news. I have to make the bed, get some breakfast, and get out.
-
Morning all! I went to bed early also. I just had a wave of tiredness hit me out of no where. I hate it when I get that feeling that if I don't lay down, I'll fall down. I would have to work the "late" shift this week of all weeks. A half hour may not seem like much but it snowballs. You have to catch the late bus, the traffic is heavier so you don't get home until later. By the time you make dinner it's later, etc, etc.
Oy!
I'm sure the room will be big enough for the washer and drier. I know Mr. Cooper will want to see them in their new home. :)
Gotta scoot. Have a great day everyone!
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Safe home, Larry.
-
Long day ahead and I must sneak some exercise into the schedule.
-
Good Morning. I have a long day ahead at work, so I'll go get ready for it.

;D
-
Need to order book when i get home.

My question for ASK BK DAY - do you think The Brain From Planet X would have been licensed if you had not done the production at the NYMF?
I just realized I was a "producer" of that production as well as the Blu Ray of The First Nudie Musical. I should add that info to my bio.

And the word of the day is: APPERTAIN!
And The Song Of The Day Is: FRIENDSHIP

Wednesday morning greetings! After being away all day and all evening yesterday, I was really looking forward to a day at home. Now, not so much, because we have no running water, thanks to the rotting infrastructure in our neighborhood :P
-
Richard just phoned someone in the city water department and found out that a valve is being replaced a block away and our water should be off for a couple of hours. You'd think, in the communications age, they could have warned us ahead of time. Good thing we keep gallon jugs of water on hand...

Book ordered, but LOL'd when I went to the site and saw the multi-spines on the cover, after BK's rant about the mini-spine on the proof. It's now a multi-volume tome. ;)

Today's Short Featured Play set in the world of Publishing:
AuthorHouse Worker 1: OMG, that Kimmel guy is bitching about the spine on the proof.
AuthorHouse Worker 2: Well, we have to fix it, what should we do?
AuthorHouse Worker 1 (panicked): I don't know, I don't know--wait! Let's just cut and paste the spine over and over again until it's thick enough.
AuthorHouse Worker 2: Do you think he'll notice?
AuthorHouse Worker 1: No way!

I am so sleepy this morning, I almost ordered it twice.

I am so sleepy because I was awakened at 3:00 am by a neighbor's car alarm which evidently took a while to wake the neighbor.
-
I was woken early by the unpleasant sound of Daisy vomitting up another hairball on the bed.

JMK: Agree your opinion of the film THE BUCCANEER. I saw it when it was first released, very soon after having seen THE TEN COMMANDMENTS as a roadshow and, having seen Brynner and Heston in that, I thought they were terribly disappointing as was the film itself.

DRs Jane and TCB, do keep in mind that just because a tourist is Asian that does not mean they are Japanese....as far as language goes, Japanese and Korean sound almost identical...then of course you have Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, etc, etc.
I could be wrong, (I was once 8) )but I cannot imagine Japanese tourists acting the way that you describe, particularly at the Pearl Harbor exhibit.
Sorry to keep going on about this, but a pet peeve with me is when people assume every Asian is Japanese or every Asian is Chinese when there are so many different Asian cultures, all unlike the other.

My Mom used to say that, followed by "I thought I was wrong but was actually correct."

Thanks to DRs Jane and Dan (the Man). Lauren called me with her news last night while I was driving to my knitting class. She's so excited!

I assure you they were Japanese. When we still lived in L.A. (mid seventies) we had good friends who were 1st generation Japanese Americans. The wife use to get very embarrassed at the behavior of the Japanese tourists we saw. She was the first person to point out it was no longer the "Ugly American". I understand now how she felt. There have been plenty of times I have cringed at the behavior of an obnoxious American.
One thing that makes me laugh when traveling, I have often noticed signs in English that say "don't touch" which don't have a second sign in any other language. I don't know if touching the goods in stores is only an American custom or in most English speaking countries.

Hi, DerBrucer!
-
How are you & the family, including the 4 legged kind as well?
Well, we.ve had a lot going on.
We had to put Fletcher to sleep - his body just gave out; and then a week late it was Mikey's turn - he stopped eating, lost weight and just seemed to give up ( I think he died of a broken heart.)
We have augmented the tribe with two more rescues - Moose and Zefram.
Moose is a 7 month old Chocolate Lab/Pit Bull mix who was an owner surrender to the SPCA.
Zefran is an eight year old German Shepard who was a heart-worm infected stray found by the SPCA.

Moose and Zefran are gorgeous. Zefran reminds me of a Doberman mix my now brother-in-law had when we were in college named Byron. One of the best dogs I've ever seen.
May you have plenty of good times with them.

Congrats on the new members of the household DR Der Brucer!! They are adorable!!
And am sorry so for the loss of Fletcher and Mikey. It is so tough to have our buddies leave us :-[

Well, they are trying to fix it, piece by piece. On Friday I return to the surgeon to get the final staples pulled from the spot on my waist where they took the chunk of skin to graft into the large hole they left on my chest from cutting out the basal cell carcinoma.
In two weeks I go to the Ophthalmology Surgeon to have a Laser treatment for the Glaucoma in my left eye ( and he can look at the cataracts in both eyes).
Some interesting side-notes.
I have had a slowly "creeping rash" on my chest for years (My first treatment for it was in 1999) - the Internist figured it was a fungus.
Since I have been here, I have been seen by a variety of Drs - all of whom asked "what's that" and I'd say Dr, so-and so thought it might be a fungus - and he would proscribe a different cream. Even when I was in the hospital for the heart surgery they put on steroid cream on the sore. My new GP who is "only" a nurse practitioner looked at it and said "I don't like the looks of that, it could be basal cell, we should get you to a Dermatologist to check. The Dermatologist took one look and groaned - to him it was basal cell and a very large advanced case at that (he even asked to take pictures to use for a lecture. He took a punch biopsy to check; when the results came back as expected I was scheduled for surgery.
Now folks make fun of us living in the sticks far from big city care...well...
The Doctor scheduled the Surgery to be done in his new office down here and they set up a pathology lab in a nearby suite where the visiting pathologist could do a frozen-section evaluation while I was still on the table.
So the farm boy just travelled five minutes from home to have the citified surgery.
My Optometrist referred me to the Delaware Eye Institute (4 minute drive) where an expert from Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia visits to do specialized Glaucoma surgeries.
Also please note - city specialists from both coasts let me dribble through 12 years of festering crud - it took a local young lady Nurse Practitioner to get the problem fixed!
Also note - Medicare saves big bucks by bypassing all the intermediate referral costs - I went straight from Nurse Practitioner to Surgeon.

Even though it's not media report day, I wanted to tell you all that Richard and I now have the first 2 discs of Season 1 of Downton Abbey!!!
-
I was woken early by the unpleasant sound of Daisy vomitting up another hairball on the bed.
That was my morning on Monday...except that Ebonie wasn't kind enough to vomit on something that could be cleaned in the washing machine. For her, it's the carpet almost every time. :P
-
There was an odd report on the Washington Post website about who from Downton Abbey has signed up for the shows beyond season three. Most, like Elizabeth McGovern and Hugh Bonneville, have signed but not Maggie Smith. So, what that means was unclear because the story then features creator Jullian Fellows, who says he originally had not planned it going beyond three seasons.
Here's the link:

The weather here is crazy. Two days ago it was freezing. And today it's in the 50s.
-
Zefran reminds me of a Doberman mix my now brother-in-law had when we were in college named Byron. One of the best dogs I've ever seen.
Well, Zef is a sweetie...but...he does bite! (Just like a Shepherd, or a Dobie, or a Collie will.) We have to be real careful about trying to keep him away from something he has decided is his (like a dropped fork!).
How we got him is interesting:
After we lost the two oldest, I went preview shopping at the SPCA. The first dog I looked at was a gorgeous black Lab/Pit mix 6 month old puppy - unfortunately the pit in him was very predominant and he played really rough, even for me. Moose was a month older, and a lot calmer and didn't play quite as rough.
I did mention to the Animal Tech that I felt a bit guilty looking at a dog I though they would have little trouble placing and that I usually aimed for animals that might not have another chance. Well, sez she, let me show you Moses (to be renamed Zef). He was calm and gentle - the main difficulty was he had major vision problems which meant you had to approach his facial area from the side - a dog treat shoved right at him seemed threatening in his blind spot.
I came home and told Woody about both dogs. The next day, we both went to the pound . We were visiting with Moose in an outdoor pen. The tech brought Zef to an adjacent pen to meet Woody and then brought him into the pen with Moose and me to see what would happen. Zef sniffed, Moose puppy pounced and Zev said "You're on" and the two of them took off romping around the pen. It was amazing watching this elder dog, recenly recovered from heart-worm treatments, with eye problems and hips that were really showing signs of age, happily playing with a 7 month old energetic puppy!
So... Woody says - I guess we should get them both!
Woody had brought Buster and Bonnie in a separate car and they went out back to meet both Moose and Zef - both of whom they treated with benign indifference.
Woody had to get to work so he took the Blondes and left for me to finalize the deal.
Now - to finalize the deal, the SPCA needed proof that both Bonnie had been neutered (one look tells you that Buster has lost his manhood). The SPCA tried calling the VET in Long Beach where Bonnie was neutered and got no answer. The local Vet where Bonnie has been treated had changed hands and did not keep the old vets records! The Vet Tech said that Bonnies' shot record would indicate if she had been neutered, so I said I would try and find a copy of that (she had been vacinated at a pet-shop clinic two years before. So I arranged to return on the morrow with the papers and pick-up the new dogs
The next day I went back and produced the proof of Bonnie's un-fecundability ( I wisely failed to note to the clerk that the "Neutered" check on the Vet- signed shot record was because I answered "Yes" to the "Has she been neutered" query.).
I hooked both Zef and Moose to leashes and got them in the back seat of the car.
They both adapted to the car ride immediately - Zef likes to look out the rear window.
(Car trained - CHECK!)
I wanted to delay taking them home until Woody was off work because Flurry had come to visit and I wanted help getting the newcomers used to the chaos which is our home.
I parked to car in the lot by Woody's store and got them both out to try going for a walk. They both took to the leases easily and enjoyed exploring the lot
(Leash - trained: CHECK)
They both enjoyed going up and greeting the customers coming and going.
(Socialized with strangers - CHECK)
When Woody was released, we took them both home to learn about their new environs.
They had no problem adjusting to the rest of the tribe and discovering the food and water dishes.
Zef and Flurry
(http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b70/GEORDIEMC/Pair0001.jpg)
Zef only needed one shove out the doggie door to discover the fun of the backyard (the rear stoop is his favorite place to sun himself).
I found a "deposit on the rug" cleaned it up with paper towel, shoved Moose through the doggie door, deposited the gift in the back yard and gave him the "here's where we poop" talk.
The next morning, I caught him starting to pea in the hall - I yelled at him and point to the rear door_ he scampered out and we've had no "accidents" since.
(House Trained - CHECK!)
Moose and Zef wrestle ever day - I'm amazed that Zef puts up with it, but he does.
Moose grows by the hour:

I'm a bit under the weather today. I rearranged my day to take it easy, but I do need to make a quick run to the nearby Whole Foods Market. I did a load of laundry earlier, as I postponed some other shopping. I am simply NOT a shopper! But I never feel right losing the whole day; I will always try to do SOMETHING. Ugh!
-
So nice to see you, DerBrucer.
How odd about having to prove the dogs were neutered. Question: How would a shot record indicate if the animal had been neutered? Wouldn't they have asked you that question and taken your word for it?
There's no way I could prove with paperwork that Joshie or Sasha had been fixed. Rex, I suppose I could, if the Humane Society kept records this long. Sasha had another name when she was fixed with the rescue group. Joshie had a number -- and I don't have that number any more.

Feel better, Jeane.

Question: How would a shot record indicate if the animal had been neutered? Wouldn't they have asked you that question and taken your word for it?
You are, of course, exactly on point!
The shot record has a check mark for "neutered" (which is checked by a clerk based on my "declaration")
and then the form has a Vet signature stamp applied.
I'm shocked, shocked to find that incompetency runs rife in the bureaucracy!

BAN THE PB&J = BRING ON THE SOYLENT PINK!
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s continued purchase of so-called pink slime for school lunches makes no sense, according to two former microbiologists at the Food Safety Inspection Service.
“I have a 2-year-old son,” microbiologist Gerald Zirnstein told The Daily. “And you better believe I don’t want him eating pink slime when he starts going to school.”
It was Zirnstein who first coined the term “pink slime” after touring a Beef Products Inc. production facility in 2002 as part of an investigation into salmonella contamination in packaged ground beef. In an email to his colleagues shortly after the visit, Zirnstein said he did not “consider the stuff to be ground beef.”
Made by grinding together connective tissue and beef scraps normally destined for dog food and rendering, BPI’s Lean Beef Trimmings are then treated with ammonia hydroxide, a process that kills pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli.
The resulting pinkish substance is later blended into traditional ground beef and hamburger patties.
For retired microbiologist Carl Custer, a 35-year veteran of the Food Safety Inspection Service, the idea of mixing in BPI’s Lean Beef Trimmings into more nutritious, pure ground beef was itself problematic.
“We originally called it soylent pink,” Custer told The Daily. “We looked at the product and we objected to it because it used connective tissues instead of muscle. It was simply not nutritionally equivalent [to ground beef]. My main objection was that it was not meat.”
…
The USDA, which plans to buy 7 million pounds of Lean Beef Trimmings from BPI in the coming months for the national school lunch program, said in a statement that all of its ground beef purchases “meet the highest standard for food safety.” USDA officials also noted that the sole role of the food inspection service is to determine the overall safety of the nation’s food supply, not to make judgments on a product’s relative merits.
But Zirnstein and Custer say that the USDA now finds itself in the odd position of purchasing a product that has recently been dropped by fast-food giants McDonald’s, Burger King and Taco Bell.
“My objection with having it in the schools is that it’s not meat,” Custer said.
In 2005, the USDA limited the amount of ammonia-treated Lean Beef Trimmings in a serving of ground beef to 15 percent, but lax labeling requirements mean that it is virtually impossible as a consumer — and for parents of children at a schools where “pink slime” is a part of lunch — to know whether a given package of ground beef or hamburger patty contains it.
“The USDA-AMS [Agricultural Marketing Service] does allow for the inclusion of BPI Boneless Lean Beef in the ground beef they procure for all their federal food programs and, according to federal labeling requirements, it is not a raw material that is uniquely labeled,” Amy Bell, spokeswoman for the California Department of Education Food Distribution Program, told The Daily in an email. “Accordingly, there is no way to tell from simply looking at a package of finished product if BPI Boneless Lean Beef is in the product mix.”
Last year, the USDA said that 6.5 percent of the beef it purchased for the national school lunch program came from BPI.

It's was a disastrous trip to Baltimore: too much money spent on taxis and trains to find that the Historical Society had absolutley nothing on the show. The Ford's Theatre programs between 1880 and 1915 are bound in nice volumes and from then on it's an occasional program, but nothing from the week of Sept 5, 1925. It was a total waste of time.
Nice people working there, and they did all they could to be helpful. I'm bummed. It looks like I may be off to Dublin in April, so that's good news.

I was woken early by the unpleasant sound of Daisy vomitting up another hairball on the bed.
That was my morning on Monday...except that Ebonie wasn't kind enough to vomit on something that could be cleaned in the washing machine. For her, it's the carpet almost every time. :P
We used to joke that our coliie Ethel was thinking things like, "Oh, look at this lovely white carp--blleachcchch." ;)

I must assume there's a Tiffin University in Heidelberg.

DR derBrucer thank goodness the skin cancer wasn't melanoma spreading like that. I'm truly surprised you were never referred to a dermatologist. I don't like having the little ones removed & can't imagine how unpleasant that must have been.
Good luck & vibes with the laser procedure for your eye!!!

Energy level has crashed twice this afternoon. Don't know what it is. But I had an apple and hopefully that will pick me up.
I finished my salad at lunch and just knew I'd need an energy fix a bit later. And then it happened. A chocolate-covered buttermilk pastry reached out of a display case and bitch-slapped me. I bought it and a cup of coffee. That was dessert and it has kept me going three and a half hours.

Well, our faucets and pipes are making all kinds of sputtering noises, so I think we'll have water soon. Of course, it will be brown and yucky for a while...
Well for pity's sake, keep on priming that pump and get that fresh water into your house as soon as possible!
-
Gosh, der Brucer, it's awful good to see ya here again! Loved the stories and the photos.
-
Zefran reminds me of a Doberman mix my now brother-in-law had when we were in college named Byron. One of the best dogs I've ever seen.
The next day I went back and produced the proof of Bonnie's un-fecundability ( I wisely failed to note to the clerk that the "Neutered" check on the Vet- signed shot record was because I answered "Yes" to the "Has she been neutered" query.).
;D I picked up on that when the vet tech mentioned the shot records.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful story & introducing us to Moose & Zef. I miss your stories of the gang.
Years ago when we found our Belle the vet found her scar & said odds were she was spayed. Fortunately he was correct.

Hello, everyone.
Nice review, Bruce.

I'm shocked, shocked to find that incompetency runs rife in the bureaucracy!
der Brucer
;D
If it had the official vet stamp it had to be true ;) I expect most people don't lie on a shot record.

I'm not even a dog person but i always enjoy hearing dog stories. Nice to hear how you got the new doggies.

DR DerBrucer it is so very much like you & Woody to look for one dog & end up with two. :)
-
I did 4 loads of laundry and washed all the wet towels from yesterday.
I have a mattress where my waterbed would be (it's a hard wood framed box). Unfortunately i'm not used to such a hard mattress. And even though i have 4 comforters on it i still do not find it comfortable and it hurts my back.
I'm used to watching tv in bed. But i'm gonna try just sleeping in the bed and not doing anything else. That is also where i like to read (and where my reading lamp is) :(
Two of the internet places i emailed have emailed me back. I was just hoping that the Canadian places would email me back today, so i wouldn't have to ship the waterbed mattress from the US.

Water vibes to DR Ginny!

Yes, on the ACS website. I wish I was good at posting links but I always mess them up. I think I was able to post it on Facebook because I only had to click on the "post on Facebook" button.

((((((((Der B!!!!!!!)))))))) SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU!!!!!!!

DR Jennifer vibes you find a water bed that can be shipped in Canada & not from elsewhere. Is it a plain mattress you have? There are many softer styles out there these days.

Oh I forgot to ask, Jennifer are you feeling better today?

What i have this week is just an old mattress from a sofabed. TWo places did say they have my size. But it has to be shipped from US. And shipping costs are around $40 (which is a lot). They all have free shipping in the US. I hope that the canadian places email me back and have free shipping in canada. But i won't count on that.

Still not feeling great. But i think better than yesterday. So hopefully by tomorrow i will be a lot better.

I will try to find the Anderson Cooper link. Although many of these things don't play outside of the US.

It did post to my Facebook page.

I tried to take a picture of my nieces togther for my sister's birthday on Saturday. It is practically impossible. I am very fussy. And it is very hard to get both of them to look good in the same picture. They only let me take like 10 shots I found two that are okay. I wish they could both smile and look at the camera on the same shot!
-
As for posting links on HHW. You should just be able to copy the link and paste it here.

By the way, There's Mel is now available as a eBook and amazon has it for only 3.99 - same with a couple of the Hofstetter books. Such a deal!
I saw that today. I'm going to pick up the last two Hofstetter books for the kindle as they are easier to read.

I found the clip i'll try to post it.

I love my waterbed!

There is one pic where one of my nieces has a strand of hair in her face. This drives my sister crazy. My mom wouldn't even notice. But my sister cannot stand seeing a wisp of hair.
-
Thank you for posting that for me, Jennifer!

DR Jane whenever you take pics of 2 or more people it's always hard to get everyone to look good. But it's especially hard for kids. After 2 seconds they are already done with the whole idea. Just to get 10 pictures was torture. Cause i would have just kept taking more and more until i knew i had a perfect one.

Photo shop or the equivalent should get that out, not that I am that talented.

I love my waterbed!
So did they. You never know unless you try new styles. Bryan also liked not having to worry about leaks anymore.

Oh btw for anyone who watches THE MENTALIST (I think DR Jane does) there are supposed to be 2 new episodes this week.
On CBS they are on Thursday at 10pm and Friday (I think at 9pm).

I've always had a bad back and a waterbed is so good for my back.

Also, you may, or may not, be interested to know that you can watch, on Youtube, all of the episodes of India's SURVIVOR (season 1) as well as Israel's version of SURVIVOR....the Israeli version even has English subtitles!

Here are a few of the contestants from Survivor India. Among them are a Fashion designer, a stuntwoman, a professional wrestler, an actor, and a Hotel Manager.

...thanks to the rotting infrastructure ...
Rotting infrastructure - you sound like my Doctors!
der Brucer
;D
:(
Well, they are trying to fix it, piece by piece.

Joan Taylor's life was interesting.
Especially after she got rid of that pesky twin. ;)
Weren't the Taylor twins in that movie THE PARENT TRAP?
-
DRs Jane and TCB, do keep in mind that just because a tourist is Asian that does not mean they are Japanese....as far as language goes, Japanese and Korean sound almost identical...then of course you have Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, etc, etc.
I am sorry you are offended, Mike, but these tourists looked Japanese and were speaking japanese, so I can only conclude that they were Japanese. I don't really think that Koreans and Japanese look alike.
-
Joan Taylor's life was interesting.
Especially after she got rid of that pesky twin. ;)
Weren't the Taylor twins in that movie THE PARENT TRAP?
Speaking of the Twins (neither of whom was Joan Taylor ::)), it turns out that they died long before being found (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-national/20120306/US.Twins.Deaths/).
Police say autopsy reports indicate a pair of 73-year-old identical twin sisters who were found dead in their California home died long before they were found.
Singers Patricia and Joan Miller lived for nearly 40 years in South Lake Tahoe but often shunned their neighbors.
Police found one sister dead in a bedroom, and the other in a hallway during a routine welfare check on Feb. 26.
Police say medical investigators have not been able to determine when the women died, but their decomposed bodies suggest they had been dead for at least several weeks when they were found.
Officials have been unable to locate any close friends or relatives to notify of the sisters' deaths.

I intentionally avoided reading anything about the play so I had no preconceived notions except fore knowing it was the POTO sequel and where it was set
While I will probably not be running out to buy the cast recording anytime soon I was indeed taken by the story and greatly enjoyed myself. I am very glad we went to see it
