TOD:  Italian food all the way for me, with a smidge of Greek and a soupçon of French and English food thrown in. :0

I love a brilliant antipasti selection...especially with well-prepared eggplant and multiple other veggies from which to choose.
I'm nuts about chicken- or pork-filled tortellini with Bolognese sauce.
I crave an authentic Pizza Margarita.
And I'll thrown in an authentic calzone with prosciutto and mushrooms.

Love souvlaki and shish-ka-bobs as served in Athens' Plaka District.  Toss in fresh veggies and tsatsiki and I'm in heaven.

Love the way the French prepare steak with peppercorns...and lamb chops.

Bedtime (before I raid the refrigerator).

Re: No curtains.

I'm going to assume that the producers are the ones behind no curtains. It cost money to have union guys to raise and lower the curtain a few times a performance. I am sure curtains can be raised (and lowered) with a push of a button, but you'll still need to pay those union guys as if they were doing it themselves.

BTW I have nothing against unions they are important

I thought the laws of New York required a fire curtain, that coulld only be raised when the show was ready to start.  I guess I am out touch with Broadway theaters.  Next thing I know, you will be telling me that they no longer use ghost lights.

I never remembered seeing a fire curtain raised before a show started in NYC

BUT

In London theaters during the interval a fire curtain is lowered and raised

TOD: I love the food I found in Portugal, especially the seafood dishes. A favorite is cataplana, a mixture of clams and pork in a wine-rice stew with vegetables. You cook it in a clam shell-shaped dish that you turn over during the middle of cooking.

I also had a soup that was simply made with stale bread, broth and about a pound and a half of lobster. I dream o that dish.

Favorite meal is what you see below, a lunch at a place we stumbled on during our last day of my most recent visit.

Ah I can tell already that the TOD is going to make this an excellent day here at HHW!!!   Food!!!!

Unfortunately because I have an uneducated palate - I cannot add much to the discussion.....except to say once at some restaurant in Baltimore I had a dish called Seafood Picasso which was a selection of seafood that was GREAT.....however none of my food excreted on the plate like MR BK's....so now I am feeling cheated.

Good morning, all! I am moving, but I am very tired.  I feel like something out of a George Romero film and I suspect I will be in bed quite early tonight.

Last night, i attended the East Coast Singer's show at the Metropolitan Room in the most excellent company of BK, DR ChasSmith, Julie, Milla, and the ever lovely Crista Moore, whom I hadn't seen in several years. She sings "The Second Star To The Right" on BK's Peter Pan recording, which is one of my personal favorite orchestrations and one of my favorite tracks.  The show was quite a lot of fun, and there were some wonderful moments and a few lovely songs I had never before heard. After the show, DR ChasSmith generously offered me a ride uptown and I turned him down because I wanted to stop at the Dunkin' Donuts on 23rd and pick up something for breakfast. Silly me. When I got to Dunkin' Donuts, it was closed.

So, I got to the subway and found Milla, who'd been waiting for a bit on a train and we rode uptown together. I got home a bit before midnight. and got caught up in a screaming fight on THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW JERSEY, my favorite comedy series, and turned out the lights far too late. Still, it was one helluva good weekend with productive work and spendng time with BK & Co.

Today, I've got to schlep some things down to Toyland before I can head to a post office and send a new full score to Dublin. Then, I'll head back here to figure out what needs to be accomplishedwith these liner notes.

I wish, during the heyday of the Russian Tea Room, that i'd had the funds to have dinner there. I could never afford it.

In the early 1980s our local campus had an office administration program that included a typing course that you could take for 1, 2, or 3 credit hours.  It was almost all women who took that course.  However, when it was obvious that the personal computer was here to stay, enrollment spiked in the typing course and it was all young men who took it for 1-credit, just to learn the keyboard.

Not long before I retired, I was helping a middle-aged unemployed man in the library.  He was trying to use a job search/resume creation website and it was obvious he didn't know how to type.  I wanted to say, "Here's your first problem..."

Interesting that DR Elmore was thwarted in his Dunkin' Donuts plans, because as it turned out, I decided to make a pit stop at the "Mobil on the Hutch" (the only, and hence VERY popular gas/food stop midway on that particular route) for something along those lines.  They're a Krispy Kreme dealer, with a rack for fresh ones when just delivered, and if you've ever had them, you know that a fresh warm Krispy Kreme glazed is well nigh indescribable.

DRs, I'm here to tell you that rack was EMPTY.  The few other breakfast pastries were unappealing, so there went those plans, right out the window on the Hutchinson River Parkway.  I was able to sleep in quite late this morning, and believe you me, a plate of slightly warmed KK product would be the PERFECT thing right about now.

Of course I should have dealt with this whilst on the isle of Manhattan, at least gotten something decent, somewhere.  By the time I got to Danbury, about 1 a.m., I'd downed a Snickers bar and thoughts of donuts had been left some miles back.  So, here I am.  A Man Without Donuts.  Or Doughnuts, as I prefer to "type", because those that remind me of the way Doughnuts used to be before there were Donuts, are my favorite.  The little Krispy Kreme glazed have the power to do that.

In my memory, the typing class I took one semester in high school was equal parts male/female, and I don't recall any stigma attached to it in any way.  It wasn't like a "shop" and "home ec" thing.  I'd previously taught myself to type (using the two fingers on each hand method) on my mother's ancient Royal at home, and was thrilled to finally learn it for real.

I do say "type", and so does every civilized person I know.
Title: Re: HOMEWARD BOUND

Then there are the professional women from the generation ahead of mine who refused to learn to type for fear they'd be stuck in the secretarial pool.  I know one, still working in her 70s, who hand writes all her memos (even emails) and gives them to someone else to type.

TOD

I.  Love.  Food.   But my palate is far from the most sophisticated around.  In my family's early years in Whitehall (one of the first real Columbus suburbs), pizza was the "Cuisine of Another Country", and I, in high school and college and beyond, was the first in my family to branch out into Chinese, Jewish/Deli, and Mexican.  What does this tell you?  I even know what it tells me.  What was the question again?

Of course, the big event in our household this week is the installation of our new furnace and air conditioning.  I tried to post the promised photo of the new furnace sitting next to the old one, but got the message that the upload folder is full.

I hope my furnace lasts and lasts and lasts.  The people who service it compliment it on being among the last "really built" ones of whatever make it is, ca-1993.  I have forced air (oil) heat and a/c, and I don't know if newer furnaces are much smaller than this, but it's a solid performer.  The a/c, as I've said, is up for replacement...and have I yet made that call?  Of course not, and it's only going up into the mid-90s come Wednesday and Thursday.

Congrats to DR GINNY on her new HVAC installation.

Sorry to hear that both DR ELMORE and DR CHAS SMITH were foiled in their pastry attempts last night.  The good thing is, they always make more.....

KEYBOARDING.....hmmmmm......no I think I will stick to typing.

When I took my Typing I course in high school, there were a few other boys in there.  On the first day, everyone rushed in to find their seat....I didn't know why.

AND then I KNEW....only about half of the keyboards had letters on them.....so from the start I was at a typewriter with blank keys....  I think it made me learn more quickly.  But one thing I NEVER did understand was that in a 5-minute timed test, you had a chart that gave you the average number of words....but then you had to take the TOTAL of the mistakes you made from that average.  I always thought the mistakes should be averaged as well.....but it was an argument I was never able to win with my teacher.

Greetings from the airport.  Despite the nutty traffic on the New York streets (it took fifteen minutes to get across town, using up what I call my cushion time), we still got to the airport in thirty minutes - no traffic at all once we hit the midtown tunnel.  They had the special extra leg room line open so I breezed right to security and was through that in five minutes.  So, I'm earlier than expected, which is fine.  I'm at the gate now but might walk around and look at the shops.

My first real day job in L.A., at a small trade catalog publishing company (across the street and down the block from the Original Tommy's, for them that knows their L.A.), was the greatest thing ever for making or breaking someone at the typewriter keyboard.  After a year of that I tested out at 110 WPM with two errors, and that's using every key (numbers, symbols, etc.) on the keyboard.

Please, can you explain the logic of this.  i've read this paragraph about five times, then five time over, and it is not making any sense.

Not from an educational point of view, not from a grading point of view.  were your teachers ever able to get you to understand why different types of typewriters, why the peculiar grading?

The NYC get-together sounds like it was great fun, and I only wish I had been there. I have had the good fortune to attend two NYC HHW gatherings, and they are each highlights of my life...and inexpensive ones at that, since I always was able to board with DR Elmore and former DR Rodzinski. Saturday was spent watching my grandniece Taylor and taking her to her dance recital while her parents attended a wedding.

Taylor and I had lots of fun. I gifted her with a personally autographed photo from my dear friend, actress Laurie Mitchell. The photo that Laurie signed for Taylor (and her little brother Ben) was from ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, a movie that both of the kids love. Taylor was totally in awe of getting this autographed photo from a movie star. I was surprised at how much she loved it. She just kept staring at it and started asking all sorts of questions about Laurie and how they did the special effects in the film and who else from the film I knew.

After her dance recital (Ben was not with us, he was down in Corvallis staying with his grandparents), Taylor and I returned to her home, popped popcorn and watched episodes of the original FLIPPER tv series which we both enjoyed.

Sunday I met my friend Mark, who is visiting from Wyoming, in downtown Portland for Portland Pride.

I missed the parade this year, but Mark and I hit a few of the bars. We located our drunk friend Terry at Scandals but we quickly tired of that, so we headed over to SILVERADO where we enjoyed the view of the male strippers. I made sure that I had plenty of dollar bills on me.  8)

Afterwards we strolled around the riverfront then had dinner at Portland Grill, which is a rather fancy restaurant on the 30th floor of one of the cities many skyscrapers. The meals start at around $50.00 each and go up from there. Thankfully, Sunday is happy hour all day and there were several $5 and $6 dollar choices on the menu. Whew!

I must say that I am exhuasted today. This Sleep Apnea business reall kicks my butt. I am glad to finally have identified the problem of why I have been so constantly exhausted, but I sure wish the treatment would kick in...some days I feel really good, but most days I still do not. It does take time, however, I am told.
How long have you been using the mask?

By the way, there's a story in the news today about how men who treat their sleep apnea properly generally tend to have healthier sex drives.

I think the NO LETTERS ON THE KEYS typewriters were particularly used for tests.....but going in and looking at the chart instead of the keys was really good for me.

BUT NO, I never did understand why the errors/WPM totals were done that way.

DR JohnG, I started using the mask in mid-December, and am 100% compliant. I have had some days in which I felt totally energetic, and a couple of whole weeks where I felt great, but these last two weeks have been right back to feeling like I did prior to the treatment.

I understand that this is not abnormal, but after feeling really well, I am not liking the feeling really icky again.

The biggest improvement was when I switched from a nasal mask to the nasal pillows, although that may or may not have had anything to do with the effectiveness...but it certainly helped the comfort of trying to sleep with a big gadget attached to my face

DR FJL here is a page sort of like the one in my typing textbook.  You will notice the little green numbers on the right side of the page.....where you stopped after one minute - the green number told you your WPM.

On the longer tests there was a second set of numbers for 5 minute timed tests....but the numbers were WPM....i.e. still 56 or 60.

However my teachers made us count ALL of the mistakes we had made in the five minutes and take it off our one minute WPM total.....which was B.S. as far as I was concerned.

My first teacher Miss Something or Other, said - oh well, your errors are averaged as well in the total....and I said....not that I can see.....and she said....you just don't get understand....and I still don't.  :P

Congratulations to Rob!  May he be very happy at his new job!

My high school class was mixed as well.

I enjoyed your description of your trip home.

Cute. :)

That is correct.  The fire curtain must be operated in front of the audience.  Broadway does it at the beginning of the show, and in the UK they lower and raise it at intermission.

I took that "Notehand" semester, too, and loved it!

Notehand was a not-as-short but easier-to-grasp version of Shorthand, for the casual user.  I retained a lot of it and even used it a few times years later.  I could probably take SOME notes with it even now.  It really gave me great respect and fondness for Shorthand and its variants.  It's a genius system.

I owe the PORGY AND BESS movie a lot.  Taken to see it at age ten, when it was new, it was the thing that set me on course for a lifelong love of Gershwin.  Not long after that I was pecking out the Rhapsody and Concerto in F (which I initially liked because the bluesy second movement made me think of moments in P&B) on the piano.

I've seen it at special showings a few times over the years.  The main thing I would warn anyone about before seeing it their first time is that it's very "stagey", as opposed to a "cinematic" depiction of the piece.  Last time I saw it there were times I wanted to scream at Preminger to get in there for a tight dramatic close shot.  Or...something.

Last night after we finished watching the 1956 Sci Fi movie WORLD WITHOUT END Keith turned on his iPad to read notes about the movie.  After reading a bit of trivia he opened a page on the actresses.  I said I wonder if DR MBarnum interviews any of them.  Two seconds later Keith began laughing and read"According to Mike Barnum......"

LOL! Yep, I interviewed Lisa Montell from WORLD WITHOUT END!

Funny that she was the first cast member Keith looked at and just two seconds after I made my comment-perfect timing. :)

David Clair was my typing teacher, which I just remembered I first took in Jr High, not high school, although I did later take a class in high school.

My first typing teacher was Mark Battle.  I had him for Typing I and II for both my freshman and sophomore years.  For Typing III (I may have waited for this until I was a senior, but I don't remember now), I had Deb Emery.  In Typing III, we got to work on an actualy Word Processor!  It was a huge machine all its own called the Vydec Text Editor.  It was really cool.  It even used 8-inch floppy discs! :D

Here's a small picture of the whole thing:

It used a Daisy wheel printer and could print up to 500 wpm!

My high school typing teacher was Mrs. Zuckerman. My best typing score was 70 wpm.

I think that the fastest that I ever got was about 85-90 wpm.

Good Luck to Rob on his first day!

I have a bottle of Campari calling my name.

What is Campari?  Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
It is a bitter liquor. I like with soda or in a Negroni with vermouth and gin.
But I opened a beer when I got home. It was cold. That gave it the edge.

It is an Italian liquor that's orangy-red in color and is bitter orange flavored.  It's rather good straight up on the rocks or with tonic water.

I seriously doubt i would like this.

Usually, my sister and niece bring their own food, or my mom might make vegan side dishes.  If she's making something like spaghetti, she makes sauce in two batches...one without meat and one with.

SO, a few months ago, mom and dad went to the animal shelter at my brother's insistance and adopted Lily the cat.  Lily had gone to the shelter with her sister Lucy and her mother LuLu.   Apparently after Lily left, Lucy stopped eating and wouldn't come out or be social. They took her to the vet and nothing was wrong with her, the vet said she was grieving for her sister.   SO>>>fast forward to last weekend.  My mother INSISTED she WOULD NOT have 2 cats, but she was willing to see if Lucy would eat if she was back with Lily.  She ate and ater........today my brother and I were at lunch and she called and said "Tell you brother to pick this cat up right now"  I asked what she had done and the answer was nothing she just wasn't going to have 2 cats.

So, I got on the phone calling whoever I could think of who may be willing to adopt Lucy so she didn't have to go back to a cage in the shelter.   We had just give up when I got a call.  It was my dad he said "We have reached a decision.  Here's your mother".   She said "We're keeping both cats. That's all there is to it".   LOL!  I don't know what Lucy did, but she convinced mom she should stay.

My mother still says 85 is no age to start raising cats, but I have assured her they won't go to a shelter if she can't take care of them....I just hope that's a long time in the future....5 cats would be well on the way to a crazy cat lady, lol

DR TCB you probably need to be stronger before having extra cats running around and tripping you.

Great story! :)

After taking Lucy in how could she give her up ;)  How old are the cats?

The cats are 2 years old.  The parents are 84 and 85 years old.  We've all agreed they'll come here if mom and dad hit a point where they can't take care of them. Unless we can find a good home who would take both of them.   I'm just glad I have a big house, lol

So this is weird...Playbill.com posted this article:  THE SCREENING ROOM: Watch the 2012 Tony Awards "In Memoriam" Tribute (Video) (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/167166-THE-SCREENING-ROOM-Watch-the-2012-Tony-Awards-In-Memoriam-Tribute-Video)...except when you click on the video, you get the message, "This video is private."

Why write an article AND post a link to a video that's set to private?  Especially when the video wasn't broadcast on TV. :P

I went to the Tony Awards site and it does the same thing. You'd think the Tony Awards site would have the permission to show something from the Tony Awards

Over the weekend, I was in the bathroom washing my hands, and i turned around to dry them on the towel; and i  suddenly realized I was standing unaided.  It was kind of thrilling for me.  My therapist was not nearly as thrilled.

That is great!

Bryan also began his job as a resident today.  The first week seems to be mostly an introduction to the job.

Rob was wishing last night that he'd had a little more of that from his new employer.  He did an all-day ride-along on Friday and he was scheduled for a normal shift today.  I'm resisting the temptation to call or text him this evening...

I would think his experience will count for something when he is working.  Does he work with one or two other people in the ambulance?

Yes, DR Jane, I'm sure his experience contributed to their decision to have him do only 13 hours of ride-along.  He was most concerned about company-specific procedures and protocols.  At his former job it was just him and an EMT.  I don't know the set-up with the new company.

We'll find out more on Saturday when we all go out to dinner to celebrate Father's Day.  We won't go to nice restaurants on the actual day (nor Mother's Day).

Maybe they only got TV broadcast rights for the background music and it can't be streamed or officially posted on-line.

Somebody had posted the memoriam as well as Bernadette's speech. I saw them on Broadwaystars.com. You might be able to see them if you go older than the top 10 videos.

Thanks for the tip, but I couldn't figure out the website to find it. :-\

I never took typing, and sometimes wish I had. I did lose a potential job with a publishing company in New York because of it (well, that and it wasn't paid and the company didn't think I could do it for free since I didn't live in the city).

I love it!!!

I'm home.  Flight got in a half-hour early, which was nice.  Was home by four-thirty, but had so much to do - unpacked, got the singers their sheet music via e-mail, went and had an omelet and two bagels, came home, answered a plethora of e-mails, was slightly dismayed to find my Dr. Chew appointment is tomorrow - don't know why I would have done that and I REALLY don't want to go, but must.

Pathetic.  A "minor cult" - that is gilding the lily, I'm afraid.  And "a search for a writer is underway."  IF this thing happens, a) it will be an instant flop, much like the original, and b) it won't be seeing the light of day until what, 2014?

Beautiful kitties. I hope they do well together and that your parents are happy with them together.

Thanks Laura.  Thie cats are just hissing now and then and ignoring each other.  It's only been a couple days.  i told mom that when she least expects it, she'll find them curled up together.  Mom and Dad love animals, I think mom's biggest worry is that they'll outlive her and she's afraid of what will happen.  She still says she'd give them away if they found the right home....she'll never find a home that's good enough :)

The Vertigo script was here upon my return.  It's pretty amazing, I have to say.  It has a final scene that's not in the film, although it was shot and is, I believe, in the special features on the DVD, there called the "censorship ending."  I knew it wasn't that - it was in the script, not designated that way.
