Good morning, all! I stayed up too late with the debate and I am stuck here today cleaning the kitchen area for the arrival of my new stove. The apartment is a dump at the moment, so the excuse to clean is good. I'm putting the laundry on hold until tomorrow.

Seventy-seven years ago today the Cole Porter-Moss Hart musical JUBILEE opened on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre; it was fraught with backstage drama ranging from angry and jealous stage mothers to Moss Hart's crazy aunt, resulting in slashed costumes, burnt scenery and theft. On top of this, there were eight principal actors vying for attention and publicity. During the rehearsals and previews, the main plot was cut back so the secondary couple, one of them Porter's current amour and a future Hollywood director, became prominent, and a lot of Porter's score got trimmed to shorten its long running time. It must have been a zoo.  The show opened to good reviews and closed six months later; its star had a drinking problem and missed performances and her replacement, Laura Hope Crews, didn't keep the house filled. I've always suspected a major reason for the show's failure was that it was a "caviar" musical, and once everyone who was anyone had seen it and its parodies of Hollywood celebrity and Noel Coward, not to mention all of its gay entendres, the standard Broadway audience didn't care so much.

Still, I dn't think Porter wrote as good a score again until KISS ME KATE thirteen years later. I'm very proud of the fact that I was allowed to restore the show.

Then went to the market, it's finally cold at night, so glad, I'm done with the summer heat.

Tonight it's time to bundle up at the football game in Ojai.   Pie and coffee afterwards.

Best of Porter's scores, IMHO. What a dazzler. "Me and Marie," "The Kling-Kling Bird on the Divi Divi Tree," "A Picture of Me Without You," "Why Shouldn't I?" and of course, "Begin the Beguine."  So many other gems.

Backlogged on everything at present.

CD car player has been acting up, rejecting discs, and haven't had time to listen to anything at home the past couple of days, but next up would be THE RAT RACE and EILEEN which is due today.

DVD - I have a wonderful collection but new Blu-rays have taken precedence this week.  THE LONG HOT SUMMER should be delivered today.

BLU - E.T., some Universal monsters, a little 007, a peek at PROMETHEUS.  Tonight, God willing and the nice mail lady brings 'em:  DIAL M FOR MURDER and THE FACULTY.

Also,

BLU - THIS IS CINERAMA and WINDJAMMER - the ones DR Doug R has been waiting for.  Just a few scenes, no time to watch straight through yet.  Strange movies now, as were all such extravaganzas from back in the day, but lots of fun and great nostalgia value.  Flicker Alley did a wonderful job on these, given that they are not the kind of restorations we usually talk about.

Regarding the play version of DIAL M FOR MURDER.  I think the main problem is finding a different actor every night willing to be stabbed in the back with a pair of scissors.

I've never seen it on stage either, which is kind of ridiculous because it's been done at least three times locally since I've lived in this area, which is pretty rich in community theater.

Well, the mess of my life continues: the new stove sits in my hallway: the gas pipes connecting the oldstove have to be disconnected by a specialist who can then connect a new pipe that will work with the new stove. God alone knows when this will occur.  My apartment is a shambles, my bank account is empty and I've been sending emals to the people receiving my checks begging them not to deposit them - if they haven't already - until next week. On top of that, I'm worriedthat the stove delivery men, before they discovered the gasline problem might have loosened the pipes and I will die from a gas leak.

Oy!

ChasSmith, there is no legit recording for Jubilee, though Porter recorded most of the songs, which appears as a CD called "Cole Sings Porter." As I recall, he did not record "Begin the Beguine," and that's probably a good thing.

Elmore, many vibes that everything gets straightened  out.

I underwent both trials today. Now comes the waiting.

The charges have depleted my account. The bank will not redeposit the funds until I file claims of fraudulent activity. Until the money is redeposited, I will be overdrawn and charged $35/check.

Title: Re: THE LATE, LATE NOTES
Post by: ChasSmith on October 12, 2012, 12:03:17 PM
Thanks for reminder about Filichia.  I don't always remember, and that's a good one because it will help to reinforce and redefine my own feelings about things to save and not to save.

Last year I went through a purge of stuff that was taking enormous amounts of room, and tossed a huge box of community theater programs going back twenty years.  There was a lot there because, as mentioned earlier today, this region is so rich in local theater.  We have fewer of them than we did two decades ago, but I believe we're still better off than most areas around the country.

At any rate, should I wish to look something up (and I hardly ever did), all of those places keep their stuff and it's easy enough to find information about previous shows.

BUT ..... I kept every program from all of my past years in Columbus, Florida, Cleveland, L.A., etc. -- of amateur and professional productions alike.  There aren't that many of them because I wasn't the theatergoer that many of you were.  And sadly, there are a few that went missing years ago.  But the ones I have are all priceless, for one reason or another.  It's just a whole different thing.  And they take up very little space.

Of course I could feel that way someday about the accumulation of local stuff here that I got rid of.  But I thought long and hard about that, and am fine with that decision.

I'm up.  For some completely random and wacko reason the house alarm went off at five-thirty.  I got up, but in my groggy state it took me about three minutes to figure out how to enter the code - the first time I did it it didn't work, but it did the second time.  I didn't get back to sleep for an hour and got up after eleven and have been catching up since then.  And since I didn't get to sleep until three, well, I'm still a bit tired.

Very sorry to hear that DR Ginny's DM is having a rough time of it.  Hope things get better.

The card frauds are scary, but in most ways the banks take care of them pretty efficiently nowadays.  Most of the time they're onto the fraud before we are.  Been there, done it, a couple of times.  However, not with a debit card like what DR Elmore is going through.  It's just wrong that the bank doesn't take that additional step of replacing funds more quickly.

Ironically, as I was reading these posts, I received a delivery of my new wallet.  Not only does it fit in my front pocket (for pickpocket protection), but it has a lining of RFD that shields my credit cards and my driver's license from being scanned.  This will, of course, lull me into a false sense of security until I end up being hacked, as well.

The charges have depleted my account. The bank will not redeposit the funds until I file claims of fraudulent activity. Until the money is redeposited, I will be overdrawn and charged $35/check.

:(   I thought they would help you through this.

VIBES!!!!!!

Friday afternoon greetings!  I had to be outta here about 10:30 this morning to get my Mother to a doctor's appointment.  She's having a lot of difficulty coping with her advanced age and today's excursion was quite depressing.

I'm so very sorry life is getting more difficult for your mother and in turn for you.  Hugs.

Or at least not charging more for overdrawn checks.  This is shocking!!!

In addition to Thursday Night Football, I knew there was an angel keeping me away from last night's debate.  I dislike Martha Raddatz, and with her as the moderator, I probably would have jumped off the balcony!

Maybe you would have liked her for the debate.  She really was very good.

DR Elmore, Richard says, "Welcome to the club," because he spent the time I was gone today dealing with a fraudulent credit card charge.

Cold comfort, dear, cold comfort!

Sorry, it's the best I can do...

How much was Richard bilked for?

Not as much as you...

I just went online and checked all my credit cards.

I hope it works!!!!

TOD

Blu - Prometheus

I will hopefully watch Prometheus, too.  I also have the new Blu-ray of "Little Shop of Horrors," and I REALLY want to watch that. :)

I'm reading "Fahrenheit 451," ironically on my Kindle.  I've never read it, nor have I seen the movie.  It's very good.

In my CD player:  I just finished a CD that I got from the library:  "Leaving Eden (http://www.amazon.com/Leaving-Eden-Carolina-Chocolate-Drops/dp/B006X08FDA/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1350079248&sr=1-1&keywords=Carolina+Chocolate+Drops)" by the Carolina Chocolate Drops.  Now, I'm listening to Rat Race (http://www.kritzerland.com/ratrace.htm).

The difference in "customer care" could be that Elmore used a debit card and banks have different rules when dealing with debit cards vs. credit cards.  Credit cards have much better protection than most debit cards...sadly.

I really do not think any bank should charge $35/cheque. Oncr they get the confirmation of the fraud they should refund it. That is not right.

They'll take your money any way that they can.

DR TCB last night DR Cilla mentioned the special diet for DC Nicky.  If memory serves me correctly he already was on the diet.  Did the vet make any new changes?

Usually a cat will need to be put on a dry food that helps prevent urinary tract infections.  But Nicky doesn't eat dry food, he only eats canned food.  So, the vet said he should be fine to stay on that.

The commercial I just saw about Wells Fargo Bank indicates that they follow the same rules on debit cards that they do for credit cards.  Perhaps on Monday, we all need to check with our banks and find out how they treat debit cards.

Then you don't have the temp in your bedroom turned low enough ;)

I used to like using them all year and Keith is now the one asking for them and his side of the bed is always much warmer than mine.  I figure if I use the flannel sheets I won't need an extra blanket.  They do tend to be fur magnets which is what I don't like about them.

I don't slide comfortably when rolling over in them, something I never thought about until my broken shoulder.

I don't like flannel sheets, either.  They're polyester and I didn't like the feel of it on my skin.  It just didn't feel "right."  I have a couple of quilted comforters that have a cotton/poly blend for the covers and that's fine...and cotton sheets, of course.

I opened doors, drawers and even searched the garage and outside.   Nothing.  I literally searched for about 45 minutes.  I finally decided to try to lure her out by opening a window and it worked.  I have absolutely no idea where her hiding place is, but it's a doozy

I called my new cat/house sitter today and she said she had forgotten to get in touch with me all week. So we planned to have her come over at 6:30 tonight so she could see how to give Callie her meds and meet the cats.   At 7:00 I called her and she said she hadn't been able to get home yet.  She also said she didn't know which number on her phone was mine.  Not really comforting, but we still have until next week before I need her.   She plans to come over Sunday evening.  I asked her if our planned dates are really going to work and she said no problem.  I'm going to have to trust her, but it isn't easy to do that.  Anyway, she does sit for a few people I know, so I"m going to have to try it.

Today the insurance guy called me.  He's the supervisor of the adjuster who never calls anyone back.  Anyway, the big hold up paying my hospital bill was that they gave me a tetnus shot in the emergency room.   I said, "Well, my left arm was all cut up and there was some glass in it." He said "Oh, then you'd need a tetnus shot, I'm glad I asked you"    Good grief!   Of course we haven't worked out the doctor's bill.  The insurance co. paid it, but the hospital claims they didnt' and they want to send me to collections.  It isn't going to happen, the insurance guy said he'd fix it, but what a stupid thing

I heard on Wednesday that she had been off of dialysis for about 3 days and they were going to try to get her off the ventilator soon.  She's been kept sedated because of the ventilator so she doesn't know they amputated her arm.   I haven't heard anything since then. I think Katie will be ok.  I've known her for awhile.  She knew this was a chance for her to see the cats and she knows I'm not going anywhere until later next week.  So, there is time.   I'll call her or text her when I'm gone to be sure she came over etc.   She is a cat person and knows how much they mean to me.  She only lives about 8-10 blocks from my house, so it's easy for her to get here.
