Well, you've read the notes, the notes were about time, and now it is time for you to post until the timely cows come home.

Didn't go into Book Soup last week, but it was great to see it still there, apparently alive and well and kickiing.  Like Robert Evans.

Very glad to hear the reading was well attended.  I've been to a couple where I was the only person there, or nearly so.

Great film! Another of my favorites. I have the Fox Spanish DVD which is widescreen and stereo sound. Good to know the UK version is in stereo as well.

Perhaps the stores will have some produce and things like eggs and milk on the shelves today, though as VixMom said, getting gas is a real problem so trucks may not be able to deliver food and other things to the stores.

Sunday morning greetings!  Fr. Richard is on his way to Lima and I'll soon be on my way to the Cincinnati 'burbs to see Rob and Mary Linda become members of the church they've been attending for the past year.  My understanding is that there's a luncheon afterwards and I'm going to visit my Mom on the way home.

From DR TCB last night:

"I find some of Kincaide's works to be wonderful."

Sorry if I sounded overly critical, DR TCB.  In your appreciation of Thomas Kincaide you are in the company of many people I know and love.  Obviously, I hadn't even bothered to find the correct spelling of his name, so perhaps I need to educate myself before expressing a dismissive opinion.

Good morning, all! I slept quite well last night.

After my unpleasant traffic situation getting home from Toyland yesterday, I doubt I will be heading down there for a couple of days. As conditions get back to as normal as they can be, transportation will improve and life will get easier. Of course, that's if this coming northeaster doesn't blow us all to hell.

I have absolutely nothing else to report.

FROM YESTERDAY

DR GINNY asked about Peter Ellenshaw.

Peter Ellenshaw was primarily a matte painter for Disney. He won an Oscar for Mary Poppins and was nominate for several other oscars. His son Harrison Ellenshaw also was a matte painter best know for the original star wars films

I own an Ellenshaw print called "Practically Perfect In Every Way" It is Mary Poppins flying over London.

Here is Part One of Six documentary about him

I like how there are only certain times when one uses the word "toasty" to describe the warmth of a place.  The word should never to be overused, as it imparts a context, and a particular type of feeling one needs to get now and then.

Greetings from Las Vegas!  Went to see Ms. Streisand Friday night.  It's great that she's not doing the same show every time.  She eliminated clips from a documentary made about her life in Brooklyn (from 1981 or so).  Act 2 now starts with a clip from Funny Girl leading into her singing "My Man," which she hasn't been singing till the Las Vegas show.

So, I didn't stop at any Marie Callender's in L.A. since the priorities were the somewhat more unique eateries, but the lady is back in my thinking and in my lexicon, and that is all to the good.  It's still breakfast time here, so I want to tell you all (because I know you're waiting with bated breath) about my breakfast at Du-par's.  And of course we owe BK for having placed that in the forefront of my mind, because just before I went out there he posted about the disappointing pancakes in the expanded and suddenly non-crowded Studio City location.

"My" Du-par's was the one on the other side of the hill, in Farmer's Market, so I started a day of checking out my old haunts by checking out the Market and eating breakfast in Du-par's.  I am happy -- no, ECSTATIC -- to report that, while the room has undergone a face lift and several increases in price since I was last there, the food was still wonderful.  But did I try the pancakes?  Yes, that's what I had.  The short stack with bacon, and about five cups of coffee.  I initially ordered the full stack with side of bacon and the waiter came right to the rescue by telling me that was HUGE -- and that I'd have plenty of it to eat, and save many dollars in the process, by ordering the "special" short stack with bacon.

For my taste, the pancakes were still heavenly and were the right choice.  Du-par's (at least this one) asks if you want them with butter, and they add it before bringing the order.  That worked fine, as they were plenty rich.  I do like more syrup than the little cup of it they bring out, and had to ask for a second.  But the pancakes and the bacon were beyond delicious, as was the coffee.

My initial regret about the place was that face-lift (which thankfully is only interior, though they may have added a small outdoor seating area since I'd seen it), and the removal of the old counter where one could walk in alone and plop oneself down and dig right into something.  The rest of the "dining room" is now of dark-ish decor and comfortable booths of a more upscale appearance than whatever was there before.  I used to think of it as almost a roadside banging-screen-door type of jernt, which is probably a memory exaggeration, and this is definitely of the more upscale feel.  While still a superb "coffee shop", it was more casual before.  But it's fine, so no complaint.  And since I LOVE TRADITIONAL COMFY BOOTHS (did everybody hear that okay?), they have done the right thing by me.

Prices seemed high, but I'm used to the ubiquitous New England diner where one can still eat a kingly breakfast for little more than five bucks.  But nowhere around here will I get anything approaching those pancakes.  I really thought they were tops.

BK, have you been back to Du-par's in Studio City since that last report?  It still looks like such a great place, and I hope they weather their expansion (which I hope was in good taste) and thrive.

I would take a gas fireplace anytime.  My beloved Angel burned all four of her paws the time she jumped on the wood stove.

Poor baby.

The previous owners of our house put a wood burning stove/fireplace into our fireplace.  It isn't for cooking on so maybe calling it a stove is wrong.  It is used to heat the room.

Perhaps the stores will have some produce and things like eggs and milk on the shelves today, though as VixMom said, getting gas is a real problem so trucks may not be able to deliver food and other things to the stores.

We could send CARE packages of powdered eggs and milk, and tinned salted beef and maybe some nylons and chocolate bars.

I am glad to hear that thngs are getting a teeny bit back to normal-- in some ways anyway.

Be sure to send the nylons with the seam down the back.

HA!  Carol Burnett used to tell the story of the time she was doing a musical review at a New York Club....she had become sort of the toast of the town singing "I Love You, John Foster Dulles" - she had to do a quick change, and one night while she was singing, she was getting much bigger laughs than usual.  She looked down and realized in her quick change....in the dark.....she had put her nylons on backwards with the seams in the front.

My mother often talked about working for the USO in Alaska during the War.  Since nylon stockings were not available, she said they would often paint lines up the back of their legs.

Quick interlude after the morning book signing at the farmers market and the afternoon choir concert. We sold close to two cases, which was all we had, so we stayed around and just enjoyed the outdoors. Beautiful morning, sun felt healthful and healing. And we met some very nice people, too.

Plus, I got some watermelon radishes at the market. I love those, and the supermarkets never have them.

Hello, everyone.

Sorry I haven't been able to extend birthday wishes and congratulations and all that. So, many belated ones now.

Hi everyone - report on last night.  Everything went well.  Had some mic issues that we solved half way through the evening.  I played a lot of things.  Sang things like "Laughter in the Rain", "Copacabana", "A Song for You", and stuff like that.  DR  Laura, I thought I had your song, but realized what I had was something with "Anne" in the title.  I'll search for your song and let you know when I get it in.  I'm back tonight from 5:00-9:00.  It's a fun gig.

I've been dealing with some tricky health issues. The whopper migraines continue. It took me three days to get over the last one. I lose some of my vision when they occur, and last time I don't think I got 100% back, so reading is a bit of a strain.

My acupuncturist has some techniques that I'd not heard of. She implanted six tiny seeds--"ear seeds"--in my right ear. So far they're been quite comfortable. We'll see if they help my back problems.

And, would you believe that I am without heat? It's no hardship, as our weather is now back in the 80s, but it's a bizarre story. Last week I noticed what looked like little bits of charcoal in front of the wall heater. On closer inspection I saw that one was actually a whole burnt into the carpet. Apparently the pilot light (the heater was off) spewed this stuff out! The pilot light is off now, and a heating contractor came by, but he's a little slow, so I'll wait until the Gas company can come out to check it before we turn the pilot back on.

Sorry, one more about Du-par's.  I was looking for something on the Miracle Mile location I recalled from my first year or two in L.A., and found this lovely postcard (which also shows how the other jernts used to look).  Isn't that deco facade to die for?

Also, there's my counter!

Thank for the photo.

Quick interlude after the morning book signing at the farmers market and the afternoon choir concert. We sold close to two cases, which was all we had, so we stayed around and just enjoyed the outdoors. Beautiful morning, sun felt healthful and healing. And we met some very nice people, too.

Congrats on the two cases of books.  How many books in a case?

I enjoyed the first half very much. Some things are better than the William Wyler film and some things suffer from the BBC's smaller budget, like the battle at sea. I read Lew Wallace's novel around 1963, so I have absolutely no memory of the book, and I don't remember if some of the material in this adaptation was in the novel and cut from the 1959 screenplay, like Emperor Tiberius' treachery and mind games with Messala's father against Quintus Arius (Ray Winstone in BBC, Jack Hawkins in 1959). I don't remember Messala's father being in the 1959 film at all.

Sasha must have told them about her visit to the vet Friday. And the last week of getting medicine. Sasha won't come out from under the couch -- and Joshie takes off if I walk toward him. Um, Rex is kinda dumb. He will crawl into the carrier if it is on the floor.

Not all that long ago Keith & I got matching new keyboards, each with a new mouse.  While mine are still just fine, in fact I love the mouse, Keith's mouse is already sticking.  Today we went to Best Buy to get him a gaming keyboard & mouse which he should have done in the first place.

Last time I looked at the new Nook Color & the salesman basically said there wasn't much difference between mine & the new one & the same issues existed.  Today we have an extremely knowledgeable saleswoman who had upgraded to the new Nook Color.  Had she helped me that day I would have purchased it.  She said she hasn't had any issues with the new one & is very happy with it.

Today I almost purchased the new Nook Color but instead went on a waiting list for the brand new iPad mini.  While I wait for it Keith will download the Nook App onto his iPad so I can see how easy it is to use.

I'm still not comfortable about the cats going in those kennel boxes.  So, I thought of another option, at least for going to my parents' house for the holidays.  I'll only go for a couple days..maybe 2 nights at the most depending on the weather, so I may just take Callie with me.  She can stay in my room if she doesn't get along with Mom's cats.  I should be able to easily find someone to stop by and check on the other two cats as they don't need special care and would be ok with someone stopping by once or twice a day just to make sure they are ok.  And Callie would be with me, so I could give her medicine.  That way none of them would have to be in a kennel.   Callie doesn't like to ride in the car, but it may be the best option.

then if I have to take them to the pet hotel, it would just be when I take out of town trips.  That wouldn't be very often.

It is definitely worth trying.  Callie might get used to the car rides when she knows they don't necessarily mean going to the vet.

I know you worry about snow.  Can you leave extra food & water for the two left at home?

And the movie is over, in time for ONMCE UPON A TIME.

The chariot race suffered by comparison with the 1959 film, but I thought Messala's death was really great. His father was a real son of a bitch. I also didn't think it had a very good ending; it was rushed, and I wish there was more of the crucifixion and the lepers being cured. After all, the novel's subtitle is something like "A tale of the Christ," who hardly matters in this version.

Now I have to watch the silent version.

I hear the new paperwhite kindle has amazing night reading. I have a really good/bright night light near my bed. So i'm okay. Plus i still read at least 50% real books.

The Color is for night reading.  It has a dark grey background with white print.  The iPad has a black background for night reading with white print.  I won't know if I like it as much until I use it.  Comparing the two in the light today the iPad, which I expected, is a bit more clear to begin with.  I preferred the grey background but the clarity on the iPad makes them about equal.

I need to play with Keith iPad to get a better feel for using it. I know how the Nook works, at least for my needs, and I expect it will be a bit of a challenge learning something new.

Th e luncheon  was a huge success

We had two freezers full of food - left over hotdogs, hamburgers and keilbasi from our  Rally Day and Oktoberfest

we made 40 lbs of baked potatoes, Pastor's wife made a HUGE stock pot of homemade chicken soup,  someone else brought a huge crockpot of potato soup, we made a big salad, someone brought a tray of perogis, we cooked up some pasta shells ans made a tray with butter sauce, a tray with chees sauce and a tray with marinara sauce

Usually we  start with one side of the room or the other but today we announced all without power were to be first at the buffet

Everyone had enough to eat with very few left overs

for dessert we  had a selection of cakes, cookies and brownies people brought alomng

we fed about 250 people and everyone was satisfied

It was a really lovely few hours after  a horrible week

After the 2-hour service at Rob & Mary Linda's church, there was a luncheon of fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, rolls, and cake.  I tasted everything except the potato salad.  Mary Linda and I each had one bite of Rob's cake and that was plenty.  We sat with one of the other families who joined the church today - Mom, Dad, and 6 kids (#7 is due in January).  I can't imagine...

Ginny, did you mean that you and Mary Linda had a bite of a cake that Rob baked?

No, DR TCB, it was a store-bought sheet cake.  Rob brought one piece to the table and ML and I each had a bite.

I'm afraid I'm coming down with the cold Richard had last week  :P

You can bet that I'll check with the gastroenterologist before starting the prep for the procedure scheduled for Thursday.  I'd hate to go through all that and have them tell me when I get there that they can't do the test.

Enjoy!  Hope it went as well tonight, Matthew!

If it's "SEAL Team Six/Osama bin Laden," then it started at 8:00, but it's going to be repeated at 11:00 pm.

Last Christmas I received a DVD set of BBC  productions of George Eliot  novels which for some reaosn we never watched

last night  Vixdad and I watched the first three episodes of MiddleMarch and today we watched the last three episodes

we truly enjoyed it
The mini-series with Douglas Hodge as Lydgate? He's currently playing Cyrano on Broadway. I love that version.

What I see is:

8:00pm:  SEAL Team Six/Osama bin Laden
10:00pm:  Doomsday Preppers
11:00pm:  SEAL Team Six/Osama bin Laden
1:00am:  Doomsday Preppers
2:00am:  9/11: Voices From the Air

Would you like me to record it?  I still need to send you the "Broadway or Bust" DVD.  I could send them both at the same time.

24. We sold about 40 in all.

Congrats, John G.!!

My sister really wants to see it,  but she doesn't get the National Geographic Channel  I would be very grateful if you could make me a copy for her.

Jeanne, I hope that the gas that supplies the pilot light has been turned off! :o

Back from an absolutely wonderful show - audience ate it up.  And the reaction to the new Outside The Box episode was fantastic - huge laughs throughout - Hal Linden seemed VERY pleased.
