Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of nominations and thrillers, and now it is time for you to post until the nominated and thrilled cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PERVICACIOUS!
-
The Topic of the Day will require some thought...but the first tag line that comes to mind is: Be afraid. Be very afraid (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/be%20afraid,%20be%20very%20afraid.html).
:D

Today is going to be a busy day at work. They've finally finalized the three candidates for live interviews for the position of the library's executive director and today, the three will be touring the Service Center (where I work) and tonight there will be a public forum. The best part is that it can be on work time! Tomorrow, there will be public forums at a couple of the library branches. The audience won't get to
answer ask* questions, like they did last go-around, but prearranged questions will be asked of them. I don't know when the actual interviews will take place (I think I'd heard Saturday), but this director search been a long time coming. Hopefully, this time we can get someone we like and who'll be good at the job.

I also liked the artwork used for the original THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. I thought it replicated the climatic scene from the movie. I was a little disappointed when it wasn't. I thought it would have made a great scene.

Good morning, all.
Went to bed a little earlier than usual, just needing the escape of sleep from the storm raging outside and from the nagging worry that power could be lost again. Enjoyed a blessedly solid sleep, and thankfully, there was no outage, no damage, nothing to speak of except the predictably annoying snow cleanup in the driveway today. And even that shouldn't be too horrible because in a typical mid-winter nor'easter we can get, easily, two or three times this amount of snow. From the window it only looks like a few inches. All in all, in the scheme of things in this here part of the world, I have plenty to be grateful for. Including...
coffee!!
-
It turned out to be a sloppy, wet evening. Manhattan had over 4 inches of snow but it will be gone by Sunday since the temperatures will be in the 50s from today on and maybe even 67 on Sunday.

DR Mike nailed it with his mention of THE EXORCIST...and in an amazing coincidence, I very nearly mentioned this very thing not two days ago when DR Jane was reminiscing about working at the Bruin.
Yes, the Bruin. And no, THE EXORCIST didn't play the Bruin. But one night I was there with a few friends to see.....something (I've never remembered what it was), and the trailers were playing, when all of a sudden here was this quiet 30-second teaser with the shot of Merrin arriving at the house and a voice-over saying that something was happening to a girl in this house and (paraphrasing) this man has been called to help. "He is the Exorcist." It ended, and there was a moment of silence. I froze. Then I turned to my friends and said, never mind this movie...I want to see that one...right now. What is that???
It's hard to believe, but at that moment, I didn't yet know anything at all about the book or the film, and I didn't even know what the word "exorcist" meant. But that simple 30-second statement and iconic shot made it the most powerful word in the world, investing it with mystery, thrills, maybe a little horror (really, I didn't know), and invested yrs truly with an immediate, all-consuming anticipation for this movie...whatever it was to be about.

TOD
The campaign which I remember so well was PSYCHO. It was brilliantly original in making use of the director to tell people they won't be admitted after the film has started. It was also revolutionary because at that time it was routine for audiences to wander in and out of theaters without regard to the timing of the film (my family and I did that all the time - "this is where we came in") and it did much to change audience habits.

These aren't my pictures. My color Instamatic snapshot went missing years ago and I was very happy to find someone else's on the web. I absolutely treasured the bedroom window on the side of the building. And I still treasure my original one-sheet and full set of lobby cards purchased at Larry Edmund's after the movie had played for a few weeks.

I really miss lobby cards! Not to mention black and white 8x10s, color 8x10s (I have a few Hitchcocks), and the various sizes and shapes of posters necessitating different but thematically similar layouts. And of course the artwork itself. That's all gone now. They all look alike, as though churned out of some great spewing machine, and there's no art anyway.

Several of the stores here sell lobby cards for Mexican films. Some of them are quite wonderful, and yet I have never picked up one up. I may have to rethink that.

The worst is behind you, DR Ginny! :o You'll be fine! :)
Really, the prep is the only actual pain in the annoyance about the whole affair.
Okay, I think I've exhausted my morning's supply of one-liners about our favorite "procedure".
-
Time to throw some clothes on and see what needs to be done with a snow shovel.
To answer DR vixmom's question last night: Yes, I have a snow blower, and a very kind neighbor who does the plowing for free (that in itself is a godsend). I think this stuff is too slushy for the blower to pick up, and I haven't even run it yet this year. Fortunately, there isn't that much of it left on the areas that need to be cleared, so I'll pick at it with the shovel.

Yes, I know, DR ChasSmith. This is not my first time for this, but I'm about 2 years overdue. In 2006 or so, my late aunt was scheduled for this procedure and because I was not yet retired my wonderful husband was designated as her driver/companion. Shortly after I got to work he called me and said she'd just called him (and the surgery center) to cancel because she was so wiped out from the prep. Took a lot of talking to convince her that that was the worst part before she'd reschedule. The center now charges a $40 cancellation fee that I think they established in her honor.
Have fun playing in the snow!

Back from shoveling. Ugh. Not real shoveling, just scraping. Had an inch or so of wet snow covering the lower driveway, but it was very slick. Unfortunately, that stuff isn't worth taking out a plow for, too heavy and wet for the snow blower, and this part's in shade so it never goes away on its on...so there's only one thing left. Shovel-plowing. A way of life here.

Given that I'm surrounded there by John McGlinn's possessions, it might be he. There have been a couple of times when I'm there alone that I'll hear someone cough or speak, or think I've heard someone come in the door or wander in one of the other rooms in the suite. Toyland has a main room, two offices looking on the Empire State Building, a storage room and a small room where we keep filing cabinets and office supplies and paper.

Driving home this afternoon we could see the snow on the mountains & something about chains needed for the pass into California.
As we drove up our road we drove into snow falling. It has stopped now.

CONGRATULATIONS DR GINNY!!

You are right, Doug. Now I remember wandering in to the theater at whatever time I wanted, knowing I could just stay and watch the bginning again. What a weird way to watch movies!
We did that a few times but learned, without hints, to be on time. We also watched two movies at a time back then.

Thanks so much everyone....I am very much looking forward to the party tonight.....however, we have to do a show first.
Have fun doing the show & at the party.

Well not only was I cold for a week but two of my coworkers had terrible colds and one of them has a terrible habit of licking her finger and then touching stuff -- yes gross --- I sanitize the heck out of everything but still....
-
Hope you feel better DR Vixmom!!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I forgot that getting the flu shot can make me feel under the weather.
-
Licking her finger. Yuck!
-
Going to go watch X Factor results show.
-
Most of the shows I watch seem to be shows that have already been on a few months ago in the US. Since we don't get USA network (I love a lot of their shows). We only get them a few months later.
Love White Collar. Royal Pains. Covert Affairs. But we are behind and they are just showing them now. Can't complain too much. Glad they are showing them at least.
-
Back for but a moment. We did end up swapping out one shot for episode one. Then I watched the first cut of episode two - he'd done two versions of the opening scene - one full length and one shorter - I opted immediately for the shorter, then went in and shortened it by another fifteen seconds - it's now a tight two-and-a-half minutes. The musical numbers are very funny, and all I did was swap out a couple of shots for different angles and added a couple of shots to one, and played the opening of another in the master shot for the first couple of lines, rather than the close-up. I'll live with this cut for a few days but I'm sure it's what it will be. And just waiting for confirmation that we are finally, at long last, fully cast.

After I had pneumonia in 2001, I stopped using the community pens at work and wiping the reference desk phones with alcohol swabs - reduced my illness rate significantly! Our library had a quarterly incentive for unused sick leave and a lot of people would come to work when they should have done what DR Vixmom has done the past couple of days.

I haven't taken a sick day since I had my gall bladder out in April 2009- no payment for unused sick days /vacation days /personal days -- no payment for overtime ...

but its a job....
-
Watching GLEE now and I really want to see ROCK CENTER at 10, but may not be able to stay awake. I only slept about an hour and a half last night.

So, I'll sign off now and see how long I last with the TV - 'night!

Then you should use up your sick days at the end of each year ;)
I'm glad you have stayed home the last two days, do so tomorrow if you need to. The stronger you are when you return to work the faster you will get your strength back. If you do return tomorrow, don't work those crazy hours, say you are too weak.

I have a few Twilight Time DVD and Blu-ray releases that I'd happily purchased on day one but had set aside to watch at some future point. Inspired by the wonderful presence of Nick Redman and Julie Kirgo in L.A. (an altogether fine evening with BK in attendance), I vowed to catch up ASAP on those as yet unseen. Actually, there are a couple of old ones I still need to buy. Anyhoo, I just watched, for my first time, MY COUSIN RACHEL, an amazing counterpart to REBECCA with a top-notch Waxman score, direction by Henry Koster, a young, brooding, intense Richard Burton, great cinematography, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Maybe most of you are way ahead of me and have known this one for years, but it was a great find for me this evening.

Home from some dinner and such. Been spending a long time thinking about my orchestration for [/i]Miss Saigon[/i]. The music in this show can't suffer from a reduction which I usually have to do considering the space I'm in and we can't afford to pay a full orchestra anyway. So, I've been looking at alternatives. One is the Sinfonia or OrchExtra offered by MTI which is basically a sequencer and the sounds are rather "synthy". Yes, you are suppose to use this in tandem with some live musicians, but you can also use it alone. There are 2 options there. One, by itself and two, with other players. There is also the recorded music possibility, which at this point, unless I find a purveyor of such item, might not be an option. The company I've used before doesn't offer this show. So, that's where my head is :)
-
;D
-
It's rainy and cold outside. :) :)
And very dark. 8)
-
DR Matthew, I hardly know the show so I shouldn't speak out of turn (so here I am doing it anyway), but doesn't a reduced orchestration exist? Or is that also too big for what you can pull together?
The only OrchExtra I'm aware of having heard was a Beauty and the Beast production, in which the MD employed only drums and bass. He controlled the mini-keyboard with his left hand and conducted with his right. It certainly sounded synth-y in some passages, but in many others I was impressed. Not that I necessarily wanted to be.
-
Not much to say, again.
About to go and house sit for the evening, and then it's Friday, YEA, and the weekend.
To sit inside with the rain. Wishfull thinking maybe, but maybe not.
-
Vibes to all.
Good night.
;D

Glad to hear the good health reports from folks! Not so glad to hear about your snow.

well its warmed up a little it seems - the snow is still on the ground but has melted on the streets and pavements

Well, the director's candidate open forum is over and all three seem perfectly capable applicants (based on what little information that we could get in less than an hour). Of course, staff and the public are not the ones to make the decisions and the board will certainly ask much more detailed questions on Saturday, but so far, all three were better than three of the four candidates that we had the last time.
Hopefully, a decision can be made (and accepted) quickly. :)

And now, I'm going home.

DR ChasSmith - even in the reduced form, it's too big for our pit and with all the percussion, there's no way in hell it will work in our space. I just downloaded the program and listened to a little and it is indeed synthy, but might work with an added reed, bass and maybe violin. We'll see.
-
Thanks, DRs TCB, Doug R, and Jennifer. I've had my sandwich and a short nap and feeling human again.
My favorite song from BEAUTY AND THE BEAST!
Of course I was talking about that great song, "I've had my sandwich."

Don't listen to me because I am pretty dumb when it comes to things musical, but as a director of musicals, I think that recorded music is an accident waiting to happen.

Back from a very long day. Tonight's session was, for me, pointless, because we read through a script and listened to songs exactly as we had two years ago - there has since been a rewrite and shortened version and that's what we really should have been hearing.
-
One of our candidates for a "state-level" position was being interviewed by one of the TV reporters, when his very pregnant wife came up to him and said, We have to go. Now. I am having contractions."
Mr. Concerned Husband stepped away and told his wife to "Hold on a minute." He then went back to the reporter and said, "Go ahead." Thankfully the reporter said to the guy that it looked like his wife was in labor and he had better go. That was the only reason that the interview ended when it did.

It wasn't up to me, but I was, how shall I say it, very strong afterwards.

I've just written a VERY strong draft an e-mail to the parent of the child whose act I created and directed that resulted in a Broadway World nomination. Those who know me probably can imagine just how strong it is, but I've had it. And if I don't write it it will eat at me and cause negativity, which I will not allow. I need to get this out of my system once and for all so that I can be done with it. They will not like the e-mail, in which I have told them they cannot ever do the act again, or at least do it with any of my contributions - and since most of the arrangements are mine, and I contributed to most of the patter, and she sings two songs of mine - well, there wouldn't be much left to do. As Babs and Donna said: Enough is enough. I will simply not allow this kind of rudeness after all I've done for this girl

Good for you, BK. You have to do what you have to do.

It's a new day...and yet, it isn't.

And since we're so close...

So, here I am just posting away about nothing.

Tomorrow, I'm working concessions for the newest Warren Miller movie.
-
It's an annual ritual for a lot of people to see this extreme skiing movie.
-
Quite a few people come only to get the free ski lift tickets and some of those don't even stay to watch the movie...you get a free (or maybe it's only discounted, now) ski lift ticket with every ticket to the movie.
-
Click HERE (http://www.skinet.com/warrenmiller/) for the website. There is a video clip of the latest movie.
-
It's a madhouse...a MADHOUSE, I tell ya!
-
Is today closed yet??
-
Nope.
-
Well, I need to go to bed, so I'm going to bed.
Good night, all.
