Title: THE BAGEL PART
Post by: bk on November 12, 2012, 12:16:52 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were bagel-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're off trying to figure out the meaning of water bagels.

I'm packing for my flight to Madrid, Spain later today and where I'm sure the weather will be better than it is here. I usually fly British Airways but for a change I'm using a budget airline but paying a bit more for a better seat.

Good morning, all!

I slept well, and I have a few errands to run before I get to Toyland. I believe that one of the buyers from the last McGlinn auction will be stopping by to pick up his last carton of music. He's taken two huge cartons home, and this is the last one to go.  He also left his jacket hanging on the coat hanger, so I have to remind him to take that, too.

Holiday songs:
The Andrews Sisters: I'd Like To Hitch A Ride With Santa
The Dixieland Band from Santa Claus Land
Don't Wait Till The Night Before Christmas To Be Good
   Little Jack Frost, Get Lost
I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm
Let It Snow! Let Ity Snow! Let It Snow!

Good morning, all.

It is a Monday, and Veterans Day.  Today's high will be 63.  It's foggy now, but will be partly sunny throughout the day.  I have neither bagels nor pancakes.  Isn't that sad?

Vibes to all.  They're yours.  They're free.  Use them any way you like.

I had oatmeal with a banana, walnuts and cinnamon and a cup of coffee. Of course, a bagel with scallion cream cheese would have been a treat but the oatmeal was good.

TOD:

Mele Kalikimaka
Mel Torme's Christmas version of Glow Worm
The Christmas Waltz
Run, Rudolph, Run
Santa Took the A Train

Then there are the songs on Christmas albums that are stretching it a little IMHO:
Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep
My Favorite Things
Where Is Love?

I am enjoying the lists for the TOD, but have nothing to add at the moment.

Last night Love Is a Many Splendored Thing was on TCM.....so I watched.....I really like the movie a lot....and until I read the Kritzerland booklet I had forgotten - if I ever knew - that the two leads were NOT friendly for one reason or another.....

From my friend Natalie Douglas:
1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter, plus more for pan
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
3 cups sugar
5 eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for pan
1/2 teaspoon fine salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup sugar
 1 cup brown sugar
Lemon juice
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 large bottle of preferred Vodka
2 cups dried fruit.

Sample a cup of Vodka to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Vodka again to be sure it is of the highest quality, then Repeat. Turn Beat one cup of butter in a large bowl of the electric mixer.
Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Beat again. At this point, it is best to make sure the Vodka is still OK. Try another cup of vodka just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy.
Break 2 eegs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl one piece at a time trying to count it. Mix on the turner.
If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver Sample the Vodka to test for tonsisticity. Next, sift 2 cups of salt, or something. Check the Vodka. Now shit shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.
Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window. Finish the Vodka and wipe the counter with the cat

Monday morning greetings!  It's cold and rainy here in SW Ohio, not great for the Veterans Day commemorations in which Richard is participating with the Honor Guard.  While he's away, I have to wrap his birthday present and get my act together for our low-key celebration of that occasion tomorrow.

re: last night's THE AMAZING RACE SPOILERS

I said last night that two teams really shocked me. Firstly, I feel bad when a team loses money or passports. I feel especially bad when said items accidently fall out of their possession while they are doing something. But to leave your passport in your bag in a taxi. Come on. Have some common sense. Would any traveller anywhere do this?? You should always have your passport and money in a pack on your body. To me this is ridiculous. Although why would the taxi driver leave with their stuff before getting paid?  The second team that shocked me was Abby/Ryan (the team going for 2 million dollars). They have always come across as wanting to win at all costs. I thought it was nice that after missing their flight with the other team that both teams decided to do the tasks together.  But what the heck? They finish their sychronized swimming task and the other team cannot do it. But they are waiting for them? This is for 2 million dollars. Not that many teams left. I don't even understand why that other team isn't telling them to go on. Very odd. So what are they planning to do? Arrive at the finish line at the exact same moment? What would Phil even do?

Good morning.  Thanks for the vibes.  The situation seems to be working itself out little by little without me having to do much.  Said singer is feeling the guilt and remorse of his actions.  Usually, I'd forgive and forget.  However, when someone says "I don't trust you anymore" - I feel that's an attack on my character, and that is the worst thing someone can do, IMHO.

From DR Vixmom:
Quote
we just drove up  and down the neighborhood in the van and would ask if they needed any cleaning supplies - word would spread down the block and people would come  and we would hand stuff out-- they were overjoyed to be given   a gallon of bleach and a clean mop and bucket

when they found out that we also had  contracter bags  they were so grateful - the area this is in is not close to any store s-  many of them still do not have working  cars (as they were also submerged) or they don't have the gas and could not go out and waiting  on gas lines because they are busy trying to get all the rapidly molding  wet stuff out of their homes - also they were afraid to leave thier homes for an extended period of time as  their are looters who are ripping copper pipes out and grabbing all the metal they can  to sell as scrap

they have had to enforce a curfew in the area from 5 PM to dawn to try and keep the looters out -  but now it seems that some, of the looters are coming ion  by boat and sneaking in that way (all these homes are on  or just off canals)

It's great you could drive through and pass out needed items like this.  It is so very sad about the looters on top of everything else.  The extent the looters go to in order to loot is shocking.

I just put a cake in the oven.  It is a new recipe I've never tasted or baked, apple filled sour cream cake.  The batter was incredibly thick & the layers difficult to do.  I'm resting my shoulder before I clean up.

I hope this comes out cuz I have my doubts.  I didn't think the batter tasted all that great.  The apple with butter & brown sugar filling is yummy.

Off to take Mother to an appointment (hopefully her last one post-surgery) & then to visit with my grandparents.
It's a bummer to think about, but this will either be our last Thanksgiving with Grandpa, or our first without him. I feel blessed to have had him be such an integral part of my life & have been slowly coming to terms with his mortality since he was approved for hospice care a few months ago.

I packed light for my flight so that I could take the bag in the cabin but I needn't have bothered because at the gate they said there was no more room for baggage so mine had to go in the hold.

Lots of Spanish children with their parents on board - why are they not in school? The child who was sitting next to me was about 8 and was playing with his ipad the whole journey. Of course, on flights nowadays evveryone plays with electronic gadgets including me.

I had lunch in the airport restaurant and on the plane had a bacon baguette -not because I needed it but I like eating on planes to pass the time. Arriving in Madrid I didn't need a big meal so I popped into Starbucks for a sandwich and coffee. I was hoping it would be warm here but it's extremely cold - although it is late at night.

I had to pay extra for it. I had to wait 10 minutes for them to "cook" it. They asked if I didn't mind waiting. Well, I wasn't going anywhere  :)

Gonna try and do my Monday casserole using this ham steak I have.  Probably a broccoli/ham thing.  That all requires a trip to the grocery, though.

mmmm ham casserole

with sourcream?

Casserole in the oven.  Rice, ham, broccoli, cheese and cheese soup with a crushed corned flake top (instead of bread crumbs).  We'll known soon...

Oh, and there's a little sour cream in there too!!

To my knowledge, we have no good deli food in this town, and that's what I've had a real craving for these past few days.  So let's allow that to bring this post around to Art's Delicatessen, where I ate for the first time while in L.A. a few weeks ago.  Art's is located in the heart of BK's own Studio City.

I was surprised to find myself immediately moving it into my personal highest category of favorite delis.  Oh, there are a couple in my past for which I'd commit a murder if it would help bring them back.  But you know what?  They were the Art's type of place.  And we have Art's.  So, I should be at peace with it and stay out of prison.  Right?

My visit was all too brief.  Had the pastrami on rye, my benchmark for quality.  It passed with flying colors.  You'd get a little more of it piled up at the Carnegie, home of my equally-favorite pastrami, but the sandwich was 100% to my liking.  Art's pastrami is leaner than the Carnegie's, but just as flavorful, and the whole affair is a bit easier to put away.

All the food in the case up front looked fantastic, as did that on other people's tables.  But I really loved the place as a whole for its perfect ambiance, perfect deli-style booth seating, perfect service, perfect everything.  Mind you, it's been years since I've been in Factor's or any other L.A. deli, but --- I love Art's.

Art's Deli has never been to my liking.  I'm glad you had a good sandwich there.  Next time you're here, it's Langer's.  Langer's is in a sketchy neighborhood at Seventh and Alvarado and is only open until four in the afternoon, but there pastrami is considered to be either the best or second best in the entire world.  Also the best potato pancakes anywhere.

And Nate 'n' Al's in Beverly Hills still serves up a great pastrami sandwich and they have the best kishka ever.

When my Dad was a boy my Papa was the live in gardener at Estate on on the North Shore - they kept chickens

By time I was born the estate had been sold, he big house and the garderners house torn down and a surburban neighborood built

Papa bought a small house with a big kitchen on a 1/4 acre and planted a vegetable garden over more than half the backyard, planted  cherry trees,  and peach trees.  He was a wonderful chef - rendered his own lard, ground his own beef, made his own preserves, relishes, pickles...

I miss  him

Well, I've finished watching all 14 episodes of "Firefly."  Great show!

Too bad it didn't last longer than it did. :(

Yup.

Now, I'll watch the movie, but in a little while.  My sister's boyfriend is here to record a laserdisc to DVD since he doesn't have a laserdisc player and I do.

Are you talking about SERENITY?  I will be interested in hearing what you think of it.

We got to the place early, so we strolled around the mall; stopped into a pet store.

Met a very friendly cat that wanted us to take him home.

 :)

Not sure if I ready to give my heart to another pet yet.

  :-\

I don't know, Druxy.  If the cat picked you, it might be inevitable.

Vixmom, I have a question about your casserole.   Do you not put any salt or pepper, or onion, or celery, or anything else?

So, Ms. Gozzi only made a handful of films, and nothing after 1973.

But she's in Leon Morin, Priest, a Criterion I just acquired.  Guess I know what I'll be watching next.

LOL!  The quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs is named Matt Cassel.  Every few minutes they will say that Cassel did this or Cassel did that; and I keep thinking they are saying CASTLE.

The one thing I am having trouble getting used to with this laptop is the fact that if you leave the cursor sitting on something, it will automatically click it for you, and if you aren't careful, it will do it more than once.  But then, just when I expect it to click something for me, it just sits there and stares at me.  Weird.

I would think that that's a setting that you could change.

I will.  Larry is recording the interview show from yesterday, "Firefly 10th Anniversary: Browncoats Unite."  He's going to put it on a Blu-ray for me and I'll put it with the Blu-ray set that I just watched. :D

Well, you must get Sundays and Cybele, which is available on DVD (you have to import it, but the transfer is great - don't be fooled by the bootlegs - talk to me before ordering).  That's Miss Gozzi's best film.

Many thanks for the song suggestions, several of which I've decided to do in our show.

Would it be this Sony one from Amazon UK?

Curse of the Cat People is quite different from the original Cat People, except the cast is the same. And it's quite wonderful. What a great double feature. The first was horror noir and the second is great melodrama.

That's the one.  Great film, and one of the greatest child performances in the history of movies.

I am just wondering............

Was Barbra Streisand the first artist to use MY FAVORITE THINGS on a Christmas album?

Well, I guess if she can sing SILENT NIGHT in Central Park in July, she can pretty well do whatever she wants, but I am still wondering.

She also sang Sondheim's "I Remember" as a Christmas song with a new verse (written by Sondheim).  I don't think that it worked.
