Well, you've read the notes, the notes didn't know what time it was, and now it is time for you to post until the timely cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: NUDIUSTERTIAN!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Back to the office after a week off!
-
It's bitterly cold with snow showers and it's a work day so it's on with the overcoat, scarf and gloves again.
-
And the word of the day is: NUDIUSTERTIAN!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.
NUDIUSTERTIAN? Aren't those the people that stay at the camps where nobody wears any clothing?
-
Guess daylight savings time has completely messed me up - fell asleep last night with my laptop on my lap and then woke up at 5 AM and could not get back to sleep - today at the office should be fun....
-
and its nearly 6:30 AM now and its pitch black out = can we just pick a time and stick with it ...
-
good morning to all
-
i agree 6:30 and it's dark out so strange.

Good morning, all! No nightmares, last night, but I did dream that I was in a courtroom and Tallulah Bankhead was on the witness stand!
Another day at Toyland: I have three or four new scores to look over, and some corrections to give Curtis. Following that, I need to stop at my pharmacy for my meds.
DR TCB, when my union pension began in January, they asked me how much I wanted deducted per payment for state and government taxes. That's when I realized that maybe my social security wasn't tax free income. So I called social security, dowloaded the form, filledit out and hand delivered it to my local office in late December. I was fortunate that I only received three payments by the end of the year, and I'm really sorry that you've got such a bill to pay.

Good morning, all.

Good morning.
Good morning daylight savings time.
Very tired from not sleeping on the first night of new time.
:)
-
Quiet weekend, warm in the daytime (in the sun), cold (in the shade), cold and dark outside.
;D
-
Thank you for your comment, TCB!
-
Off to work.
Time tonight to catch up on all the posts from the last couple of days.
Till later.
;D
-
Good morning, all.
Back to the old backaches this morning, after several weeks in which they've been little to non-existent. Go figure.
-
I didn't sleep well either. Can I blame it on Daylight Savings Time even though we don't do that here?
-
Greetings from Toyland!
-
Cillaliz, just saw your comment from last night and it gave me a good chuckle. It's not a very apt description as the Bible study group is mostly female, as was the movie.

Elmore, did you happen to read Steven Suskin's "Babes in Toyland" review this week?

I remember loving "The Winds of War." I also remember really enjoying the tension in the first few hours of "Amerika," before it collapsed and burned into a mess.

DR DRUXY I was driven by friends to see THE DROWSY CHAPERONE at Ft. Wayne Civic Theatre yesterday.
They mentioned LOMBARD in the curtain speech, and he mentioned the name of the actress who will be playing the role, I am sorry to say that I have forgotten the name. Should have written it down.
It is a beautiful theatre in a building that is part of a larger Arts Center. The production was beautiful...the costumes were great, the sound was great....the orchestra was great. EVERYONE was very good with two exceptions:
The Drowsy Chaperone - this woman had no command of the stage and was just too low key....there was no there THERE.
AND:
Alphonso - who was played by a very young African American gentleman in the manner of James Brown and Little Richard.....which just did NOT work for me.
All of the singing was good - I think this is volunteer theatre, at least none of the participants seemed to be Equity members.
ANYWAY - it is such a LONG drive.....almost three hours.....they I may not be able to come up.....time will tell.

Elmore, did you happen to read Steven Suskin's "Babes in Toyland" review this week?
No. Is it a review of the two Max Liebman broadcasts?
It is. And, IMHO, a lame take on the music.
Suskin, who can be an entertaining writer, is a musical moron, as his orchestration book often shows, and he's gone on record as an official hater of operetta. My prov=blems with the Max Liebman versions are they're one more cutesey-poo sugaring up of a family show about child abuse, murder, sex, and Mother Goose!
-
I just saw Suskin's review; he parrots the traditional story that BABES was written to cash in on THE WIZARD OF OZ success, and my research proves that wasn't quite the case since the partnership with director Mitchell and producer Hamilin was set to do a series of summer family extravaganzas at the Chicago Grand Opera House, and BABES was written in 1902 at the same time that MacDonough was rewriting THE WiZARD OF OZ for Broadway (OZ opened in January 1903 on Broadway and casting for BABES began in March 1903). Of course he knows nothing of its gothic-horror plot, which combined the British pantomime "The Babes In The Wood" with the horror story "The Wondersmith" by Fitzjames O'Brien. Nor does he mention that Cunegonde was written for Edie Adams to play.

Why should facts enter into the picture?
It's just like politics. Tell a lie often enough and it's got to become truth, right?

Got the YA novel "Better Nate Than Ever" from the library the other day and have managed to read 50 pages before my eyelids won the battle and sleep took over. Really fun book about a boy who is obsessed with all things Broadway and is auditioning for a show. I know Ben and I have mentioned it before, but now that I have it in my hands, I can say that the writing is all it has been praised to be.

I'm up, after being up at seven for thirty minutes. What an interesting dream I had.

Just now signing in here after a nice sleep-in (thank you, DST!), a walk around the basement, starting a crockpot of chili, and lunch and a video with Richard. The chili is mostly for tonight's AAUW meeting at the book sale site, but I'll leave some for Richard's dinner.

Just glancing at other people's answers, it's obvious I never watched too many mini-series. I remember watching some or ROOTS but not getting all the way through it. And not that I even remember too much of these, but...
LONESOME DOVE
THE WINDS OF WAR
WAR AND REMEMBRANCE
Does THE STAND count? How about British stuff like HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY and DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS? I've greatly enjoyed those years after the fact via the miracle of DVD.
-
Is CENTENNIAL any good? I occasionally see that DVD set at Costco or someplace and always wonder if I should get it.
-
The Stand was a really good mini-series. Enjoyed Molly Ringwald in that, and Jamey Sheridan.
-
These mini-series titles are bringing back from hours from my lost youth.
-
Yeah, and I'm thinking there have to be others that I actually watched.

TOD - in the '70s, the heyday of TV miniseries, I worked 2 evenings a week and was very involved in community theatre. I missed a lot of weekday evening television. Richard and I "courted" watching I, CLAUDIUS, which is why we used the Masterpiece Theatre theme as our wedding processional.
Think I'll use today's posts to make some additions to our Netflix queue...

ROCK FOLLIES starring Julie Covington and Rula Lenska - was that a mini-series?

the people who wrote it don;t understand all of it. I think any one person only understands the section they themself wrote. :)

Didn;t they just used to call these things that became "mini-series" two-p[art movie of the weeks before they came up with the "mini-series" name?

That the government is allowed to do this is the shocker. The fact that no one will stand up to this and take this crap down is the shocker. For some, this money is how they live - they've already had it taken from their paychecks and they've already paid taxes on those earnings. If people don't see how wrong and how sickening this is, well, then they are wee sheep. Ayn Rand was right, at least in this aspect, with government taking money that they have no right to just because, well, because they don't know how to run a country fiscally, and have wasted trillions of people's dollars and that in just the last six years.
-
On a happy note, (C-natural), "My Geisha" and "Juliana Hansen" have arrived! ;D

Had a quesadilla for lunch. And that will be IT for the day - I seriously have to lose twenty pounds pronto and then another twenty after that, which I can do more slowly. I have, as they say, had it.

I guess I'll mosey on over to the mail place. Am on the last CD to load into iTunes for the Kritzerland show. That's all taken about two hours.

Seriously, they thought when they made the law that they were being reasonable by not taxing social security benefits at all for people making very little money, and then gradually increasing the percentage of the social security that was taxable.
Problem is the amounts of your overall income threshold at which they started taxing your social security benefits is really kind of low.
So some people started deferring their discretionary amounts of "other income" [meaning some people strated deferring any amounts they can actually control] to monitor how much of their social securituy benefits would be taxed - and that's really abd for the ecopnomy, IMHO.
-
LOL DR FJL....taxing by committee is always interesting.

I had answered some local burrito restaurant's movie trivia question back in December. It was about "Les Miz" and won. Well, I forgot to pick up the prize until the other day. Turned out to be dinner for two at the burrito place and two free movie tickets. I like that.

It's like when I got into the movie GREASE for free on opening night because I had the best "dressed like the 50's" outfit on - and I didn't even know there was going to be a contest!

Well, I must be off...I'm leaving work early! I'm going to my parents' house to help move all their stuff off their back deck. They're going to have a whole new enclosed deck built and their "stuff" needs to be moved. My niece will also be helping, so it won't only be me, which is good. :)

You can explain until the cows come home why the government feels they have the right to tax money that's already been taxed and withheld and I will continue to point out the trillions of dollars they have WASTED of YOUR money - start with the bailout, in which wealthy people got wealthier and nothing helpful happened. Let's just start there with that monumental waste of time and money. The people who caused the economic problems all get helped. Note: They didn't need the help - they were already the wealthiest individuals in the world. The people who need help were not helped.

Actually, Fred, I very foolishly believed my brother in law when he told me that the figure I was receiving as Social Security Disability was After taxes. He had been on Disability for several years, so I assumed he knew what he was saying.
Ouch!

You'll never hear me defend taxing social security benefits. But the logic was supposed to be that rich people should not get the benefits tax-free, and likewise people who were not yet retired and were pulling in a nice income would also be taxed on the benefits as well. but somehow, they set the threshold WAY WAY too low, so the idea that it's only the people who are doing well otherwise financially and still getting social security benefits would be taxed on those benefits - that idea somehow slipped away.

Recently we have watched two movies I think Mitchum was terrific in.
The mention of WINDS & WAR is a reminder how much I disliked him in it. I loved the book I was horrified with the casting & performance of the three stars, Mitchum (should have been Lou Grant but he was "blacklisted" back then), Jan-Michael Vincent who sulked through the entire series when he was suppose to be charming & lovable. And then there was Ally McGraw who was too old and void of talent. It still frustrates me how the casting ruined this for me.

How about Tallulah as the court clerk reading the jury verdict: "They said you're going to die."
(I think that's a reference to either a Tallulah or Bette davis joke, or both.)

I would love to get to DC, but don't know yet which day(s) it can be. I have to coordinate it with something else.
In other news, the show I'm playing has done such poor box office they're cancelling that last weekend!! First time ever for that theater.
But that helps a little with the ol' schedule.

Yes indeed! I have no idea how frequently it's done, but I suspect it doesn't get a lot of business. Hell, there's just about nothing on YouTube, which I think is now pretty rare for most shows.

But I've had my fun with it musically. No complaints.

I'm home after helping my parents move a whiole crapload of stuff off their back deck and out of the little shed behind that. My dad and I took a truck load to the dump. I'm glad that that's done.

When we got back, my mom made spaghetti and meatballs. :D

I'm tired but not hungry.

And of course.....when I see a performance of stunning wrongness in a show....I always wonder: "Whose boyfriend is HE?"
I've seen a few local performers and asked the same question. ::)
;)
"You talkin about me?"

From DR TCB:
Actually, Fred, I very foolishly believed my brother in law when he told me that the figure I was receiving as Social Security Disability was After taxes. He had been on Disability for several years, so I assumed he knew what he was saying.
Ouch!
Does WA also tax you on Social Security? Oregon doesn't but then we are hit hard with the income tax which you don't have.
Fortunately, no. However, Pierce County already has the highest sales tax in the State. Almost 10%.

DR TCB, Venice California ;)

Recently we have watched two movies I think Mitchum was terrific in.
The mention of WINDS & WAR is a reminder how much I disliked him in it. I loved the book I was horrified with the casting & performance of the three stars, Mitchum (should have been Lou Grant but he was "blacklisted" back then), Jan-Michael Vincent who sulked through the entire series when he was suppose to be charming & lovable. And then there was Ally McGraw who was too old and void of talent. It still frustrates me how the casting ruined this for me.
Who is Lou Grant? Besides a TV show.

Oh well, I guess I will ever know.

Back from a very weird evening - not even sure WHAT it was - it was, I guess, a series of concerts, but maybe to benefit abused women or something - really hard to tell. They did it at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, but onstage. It was an audience made up of elderly rich and entitled and "hip" people (like Norman Lear) and young "hip" people who stood and cheered at every riff of every song. The evening was of Tena Clark songs. This is how much I know about pop music after 1985 - I had and have no idea who this woman is. They say she is legendary so I guess she's had some million selling hits. She also wrote the score to the musical Twist that was born and apparently died in Pasadena at the Pasadena Playhouse. Or maybe it's still Broadway bound four years later. Every song sounded the same - Tena explained how she came to write them. The host was, well, all about herself - she stood there for every performer's number, moving around in distracting ways, making faces like she was "into" the music so much it was aching her soul - the musicians were all that way, too. Just sing, just play the damn music, and don't put on the acting - it's just so self-indulgent. Some good performers including Mary Wilson and Patti Austin - but the younger folks were all that riffing and screaming stuff that I don't like or respond to. One of the singers, young Sara Niemietz who, I think, was in Jason Robert Brown's 13 is now a pop kind of gal who's being produced by Snuffy Walden. It's a shame she didn't pursue her musical theater career - she's got some talent and I think a lot more than the pumped up, reverb-laden soulful pop singing she was doing.
