Title: PHOTOGRAPHIC FRIDAY
Post by: bk on August 09, 2013, 12:25:58 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were photographic and appeared on Friday, and now it is time for you to post until the photographic cows come home.

Topic of the Day:

In my DVR and being recorded onto my DVD burner:  "The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg" with Ramon Novarro and Norma Shearer.  It's for my dad.  I've just started it and I'll let it record while I'm asleep...which I'm about to do.

Good morning, all!

The Big Meeting went very well yesterday, and I think the conductor, producer, and I are all in agreement in what's to be in the next two weeks. I'm still wondering if I will get to Dublin and back alive and in one piece!  I've taken care of the car issue for Sunday, so I've got to plan how best to pack.

Now I have to figure out the logistics of my navigation around laundry, bank, and market for the next two days.

Good morning, all.

Happy Friday vibes.

Didn't sleep well last night. Maybe too much bourbon. Anyway, I finished off Stuart Ostrow's not very good "A Producer's Broadway Journey," a very sloppy overview of musicals from the 1950s to the end of the century. Except he randomly skips over years and shows (no mention of "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Nine," "On the 20th Century," "Pacific Overtures," etc.), so it isn't really an overview at all.

Well, the reviews of the new musical "First Date" are meh.

But the interesting thing is all the buzz that Elena Shaddow is getting in the pre-Broadway production of "Bridges of Madison County." While folks in the three reviews I've read are praising the show, they're really sending her love letters. And yet, Kelly O'Hara is supposed to play the role on Broadway, as the show was written for her. Wonder who will open in it.

I've been to Fed Ex and they wanted $188 to ship my scores to Dublin economically. So, I called the air lines and told them I needed to check a second bag; that cost me $124 but I saved $64 so I'm not complaining too much. All I have to do is survive getting onto the flight.

I thought today's laundry was going to kill me.

I'm headed back to La Jolla today for more tomfoolery, after an oddly scheduled day off. Browsing the supermarket I came across a display of Spam. I thought I'd not had that in decades so I bought a tin. When I tried to open it, the ring-pull thingy snapped off as soon as I pulled it back. I then tried two different can openers. I tried both ends of the tin but neither opener worked. There was a tiny hole where the ring-pull was so I tried sticking the prong of a fork inside and trying to lever up the metal casing. I finally gave up before I ended up with cuts and blood all over my hands and hurled the wretched tin into the wastebin. Not to be outdone I went out again and bought another tin - but haven't had the nerve to attempt to try and open it yet. Are they actually meant to be opened?

Probably...but the next time (and I'm sure that there will be a next time) that the ring-pull thingy (scientific name) snaps off, you could try needle nose pliers to pull open the lid.  I've actually done that before (not on a Spam can, though) and it works quite well. :)

Watching a powerful, disturbing documentary from Werner Herzog on the dangers of texting while drivings. Sounds almost ridiculous, but it is actually quite haunting.

Friends went on the barbecue trail and left samples for me from two places. Got brisket, a massive pork chop, jalapeno-cheddar sausage, a pork rib, some sauerkraut with pork in it and coleslaw. A fine dinner.

Starting Stephen King's "Storm of the Century." Didn't see this whenever it originally aired, but I figure a miniseries about snow might be acceptable when it's 108 outside.

"Storm of the Century" isn't top-drawer Stephen King, but it does have one wonderful setup: A Satan-like character comes to a small town on the eve of a horrible snow storm and knows the deep, dark secrets of all the hypocrites in the town. And he takes glee in announcing things like the guy who manages to sell marijuana or the girl who has just had an abortion while her boyfriend is sleeping around with someone else -- all revealed in the presence of the rest of the town.

Mine is a Cuisinart.  I got that particular one because it came with the filter you can use if you want to use your own coffee.  Of course I'm still using the K-cups that came with it.  It's perfect for me because I usually just have one or two cups of coffee.  I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I am!

Unfortunately fabulous trees made the overgrown back yard look even worse.   Jeff, the tree guy, said if I worked on it today and left a pile by the driveway of leaves and wood in the driveway he'd pick it up and get rid of it.  Well  I couldn't pass up that.  It took me hours but I got to play with my chainsaw for part of it. There is now a huge pile of leaves, weeds and tree limbs in my driveway.  Jeff sounded surprised I actually did it, lol.  He'll pick it up tomorrow. I can still get out the driveway so that's cool.

The museum is actually very cool. It tells the history of Spam but also the history of America. some fun stuff like a replica radio station with Burns and Allen playing.  Spam was a sponsor.  There I also an area where you can listen to the All Women Big Band. I think it was Armour that was the sponsor not necessarily Spam, but it was during WWII.  They were great.  There is also a hologram of a soldier in his tent talking about spam.  You kind of have to be there I guess, but it's definitely worth stopping if you happen to be driving down I-90 Through Minnesota

I should clarify that comment.  I am a big fan of Mr. KIng, but I think when you dream up those types of stories and characters; it sometimes becomes difficult to create an ending to match the rest of the book.  Just my opinion.
