Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no missing downbeats or accents, and now it is time for you to post until the missing cows come home.

Oy!  HORRIFIED to hear of the missing downbeats and accents.  That's original sin, man.  Even if you're sight reading, even if you flub some notes or chords, the beat must go on.  I just went back and watched the video, and I am NOT patting mine own self on the back for thinking that song would be a piece of cake, and a lot of fun, to play after a run-through or two.  He's turning a lot of pages so it's obviously all written out.  Would love to see the chart.  Oy!

BK:  Is your other player the Oppo 93?  Which region "mod" do you have?  Mine's the one that plugs in either on the back or inside, and I have it on the back.  You do the code-and-restart thing to change BD regions, and it's always all-region for DVDs.

There's probably no Burton role I don't like, but the core favorites would be:

The Night of the Iguana
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Equus
1984

And for a little Shakespeare:

Hamlet
The Taming of the Shrew

I never saw THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD back in the day.  At some point in the late 1980s, something prompted me to read the book, and I loved it.  Then of course there was no way I couldn't immediately see the film.  I rented it on VHS and loved it, too.  Years later I watched the Criterion DVD once, but that's been a while now so I'm saving myself for the Blu-ray.  I love Cold War stuff like this, anyway, but le Carre is surely at the top of the heap.

Good morning, all! I forced myself to be out of bed by 8:30, although I wish I were back there at the moment.

This morning I have physical therapy at 11, and I need it; my left leg drove me mad most of the night. I was debating a laundry attempt this afternoon, but it honestly depends on how I feel after PT and how my walking goes.

Most of the Richard Burton movies mentioned are the ones I enjoy the most....so I will just add second votes for:

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
The Spy Who Came In From the Cold (an excellent book as well as DR CHAS SMITH said)
Where Eagles Dare

And I will add:
Cleopatra
The Rains of Ranchipur
The V.I.P.S.

I like all of the Sean Connery James Bond movies...no particular favorite.
The Manchurian Candidate
North by Northwest

I am back from physical therapy, and I ache all over, but my progress in a week is quite amazing: last Monday, I coulld not lie flat on my stomach because every nerve ganglia between my toes and my middle back did not want to stretch that far and protested loudly and painfully. I now can lie flat on my stomach with some discomfort to my left leg, but not enough to stop the massage or treatments. I'm quite pleased, even though I still walk like Lurch and  every time I put my left foot on the floor I worry that I will fall down.

I'm going to delay laundry until tomorrow, but I do need at some point t make a trip to the corner bodega and ATM.

Monday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I were at the vampire's blood lab before 9am for both of us to have tests.  We then went to breakfast, to the Verizon store to ask a question about our recent bill, and to the grocery, where we shopped, Richard had some prescriptions filled, and I did some banking.  It's very unusual for us to be out and about so early, especially on a Monday morning, and we ran into several of my AAUW friends who were very surprised to see us.  Home now for the rest of the day.  I'm actually going to cook dinner tonight and clean off my desk.  It's a mess!

Yes, the Oppo  93 - I can't remember the instructions that came to do the all-region thing - it's on a paper I have in the den, but I've never changed it after I set it.  That player always works fine - but the cheap five year old Samsung is done.

I can also recommend cheap Panasonics.  Mine was wonderful but I passed it on to someone when I got the Oppo.

So, just in case we have the same add-on:

Remove disc, close drawer, wait for "No Disc" message on screen.
On remote, press "DIMMER" three times, then press "MUTE" once, then press "1" or "2" (for Region A or B).
Don't do anything else.  Just turn player OFF.

Turn it back on, and Bob should be your uncle.  If he isn't your uncle, then it's probably a different mod, but let's hope...

DR ChasSmith -

Great, but I think you're missing a few steps.

At some point, you're suppose to turn around three times and touch your right finger to your nose.
And then at the end, aren't you supposed to hop on one foot and sing the 3rd verse of "Yes, We Have No Bananas"?

About TWO computers ago, I read a blog titled - I think - "Also in the Cast...".  It had really strange theater photos that had appeared in local newspapers.....kind of random weirdness.

Of course, now it is no where to be found...perhaps it has gone the way of the dinosaur ... but it was very funny and very interesting to see how some directors felt that their actors should be posed....

I have returned to the land of the living

How is the show going?

Funny you should ask.

When I started doing shows, the week before the opening was widely known as HELL week.  As time went on, it kinda slowly morphed into TECH week, which is how I refer to it now.  However, the last week was indeed a HELL week.  I won't go into detail, but the totally control of the sound of the orchestra is out of my hands and in the hands of the sound designer.  It's very frustrating.  Once we thought we had a great mix happening, it would change.  I'm not a sound designer, but I don't know how to work a sound board and if I had to, I could run a show.  But COME ON, find a level and stay there.  I won't go on, because I'm trying to be positive that when we're back on Thursday, we won't be back to square 1.

Anyhow, it's a great show with some really great moments.  And the band rocks, when you hear them :)

On my Toshiba multi-region Blu-ray player, the DVD regions switch automatically.  There's nothing that you need to do.  For Blu-ray discs, you turn the device off, hit "1" for Region A, "2" for Region B or "3" for Region C, then you turn it on.  That's it!  I've actually tried it with a disc in the drawer and without a disc in the drawer and it worked either way. :D

Favorite Richard Burton films

BECKET
WHERE EAGLES DARE
THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD
WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?
THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA
THE MEDUSA TOUCH

When I first saw THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD in 1965 I really disliked it, finding it too downbeat and depressing, Now, it's become one of my favorite films. Strange how perceptions change over time. Usually it works the other way round and I find myself wondering whatever it was that I liked about a film which I saw when much younger.

Happy Monday, all!

Thankfully, for me, it's my day off after the brutal 5 show weekend.  We learn later today whether we will extend this piece, and I have mixed feelings about it either way. We shall see...

But I am excited to see the new Kritzerland show, which I only wish I could have been a part of. Only today, though, would I have known if I could have been free for the rehearsals.

TOD:
One of my favorite films of Burton's was BECKETT.
And I had the good fortune of seeing him do Equus live in his 10 week stint on B'way. Marion Seldes who taught at my school, and who was in the production, got us all tickets in the onstage seats. It was stunning to see him close-up and watch him savoring the work.

Spy films.... so many, but just a few here:
Always loved THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR; many of the Connery BOND films.
Newer: The BOURNE TRILOGY (the books were awful but I loved the films); SKYFALL
And as quirky and odd as it was, I enjoyed SNEAKERS, mostly because of the cast, and the humor.

Oh yes, favorite spy films.

Hmmm...

I rather like some of the Italian spy films of the 1960s, particularly those starring Ken Clark, Brad Harris and Tony Kendall, or Rodd Dana.

DR George, I did not watch the Miss America pagent last night...in fact haven't watched that one nor Miss Universe in at least 20 years. Oh how I used to love watching Miss Universe as a kid. I always rooted for Miss Japan and Miss Iceland!

The winner of this year's Miss America is a stunner, that is for sure.

Saw an interesting article today about the hateful, racist twitters posted after her win. I know that American's are not known for there knowledge of geography, but seriously....these idiots were posting about how angry they were that an Arab Muslim won Miss America! Oy. (She is of Indian ancestry and is a Hindu).

And at least one Conservative pundit was angry that this gal won over the blonde, tatooed, gun shooting/hunting contestant, saying that the contest is rigged by the liberals who hate the true American values that the gal he liked possessed.

So did anyone watch THE NIGHT THE WORLD EXPLODED (1957) this weekend? I have only watched about half of it, so far, but it is kind of a fun old B movie.

Rather contemporary in ways, as the scientists in the movie talk about how the world is imploding because we have abused the earth and its resources.

BK:  Is your other player the Oppo 93?  Which region "mod" do you have?  Mine's the one that plugs in either on the back or inside, and I have it on the back.  You do the code-and-restart thing to change BD regions, and it's always all-region for DVDs.

George, if you have a chance can you check for the model number of your Blu-ray player?

And speaking of the movie version of "Into the Woods" (I'm sure someone somewhere in the world was ;) )...Annie's Lilla Crawford Will Be Little Red in Into the Woods Film, Featuring New Song by Stephen Sondheim (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/182167-Annies-Lilla-Crawford-Will-Be-Little-Red-in-Into-the-Woods-Film-Featuring-New-Song-by-Stephen-Sondheim?tsrc=hph).

Quote
Lilla Crawford, who originated the title role in the 2012 Broadway revival of Annie, will play Little Red Riding Hood in the Disney feature film adaptation of Into the Woods, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures confirmed Sept. 16. It was previously reported that YouTube personality Sophia Grace Brownlee would play the beloved fairytale character.

According to Disney, production on the film began last week, featuring an award-winning production team led by Rob Marshall ("Chicago," Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"), who helms the film, based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides music and lyrics — including an all-new song for the big-screen adaptation.

It appears that actor Mike Road died back in April at age 95.

The name may not be familiar but anyone who watched cartoons in the 60s or 70s, would recognize his voice, and his face would be familiar to viewers of 1950s/60s tv shows.

He is very well known for being the voice of Race Bannon on JOHNNY QUEST. (I am pretty sure that Race Bannon was my first crush as a small child).

 8)

Then clap your hands and sing, "That's what it's all about!"

DR TCB - this is what Wikipedia has to say about that:

Bob's your uncle is an expression of unknown origin, commonly used in Britain and Commonwealth nations. Typically, someone says it to conclude a set of simple instructions, similar to the French expression "Voila!" or the American slang "Hunky dory".

I buy from an online company that specializes in region free players and especially that specializes in making sure their modifications withstand any and all firmware upgrades.  That's why it's a bit more, but I'd rather spend a bit more now than have to buy again in two years or whatever.

She occasionally puts something up on facebook.  I know she isn't supposed to talk about her house until everything is settled from the tree falling so I don't ask.

Ginny, I am trying to picutre what you consider "a mess" on your desk.

Actually, I have 2 desks, DR TCB - one where I work at my computer and write and the other kind of a credenza perpendicular to the desk.  The credenza is piled high with AAUW papers, with material for the class I'm starting tomorrow night mixed in.

Very nice.  Although I do think it is pretty tacky that a big University, like Michigan, would go and steal my high school's fight song!

Oh yes, favorite spy films.

Hmmm...

I rather like some of the Italian spy films of the 1960s, particularly those starring Ken Clark, Brad Harris and Tony Kendall, or Rodd Dana.

But they all had such huge hits, can't you narrow it down?

Yes, Sophia Grace Brownlee was originally announced.  She made some YouTube video and Ellen DeGeneres had her on her show and Sophia (and her little sister) became famous for a few minutes.  I wonder if the original casting of her was to play on that hype and then they realized that she might not have actual musical theater experience (or talent ::) ) and they recast her.  Just a thought.

First Look: Carrie Underwood as Maria in The Sound of Music (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/entertainment-eonline/20130917/b459565/).

Stephen Moyer is playing Captain Von Trapp, Audra McDonald is playing the Mother Abbess, Christian Borle is playing Max and Laura Benanti is playing Elsa Schrader.  I wonder if they'll keep Max and Elsa's songs in the show or not.  This live production is supposed to be based on the Mary Martin version, but they always say, "...in the role made famous by Julie Andrews in the musical's 1965 film version."

Enjoying "Buck Privates." Abbott and Costello are fun, but it's the Andrews Sisters who make the movie for me.

This is part of a complete Abbott and Costello film collection that the library acquired recently. They broke it into parts, with the first part having 12 movies. I don't know how many I can watch in a week. But they're fun.

Well, the good news is Bob is going to rent my spare office.  I'm glad it's going to happen and I really hope it works out for him.

Edith and I are now turning the break room into a second conference room, which after all the work I did this weekend,  just means rearranging furniture, we'll have to clean the file room to make room for the spare bottled water, and I'll take in a few prints to make the walls look a little better.  t will always have a microwave, fridge and sink, but it looks ok.

Bob hasn't started a business before and is quite nervous about it.  He's asked me to help him with all the detils, so I will.  I also need to write up an office sharing agreement, but that shouldn't take to long. We called the phone company today and got that set up. Tomorrow I'll help him get started with some of the other things he'll need to do.  I think once we get things set up, he's going to like the independence of having his own office

Or the one who said she couldn't be Miss America, because she wasn't an American.

Hello. What an awful day in Washington, DC.  As Kate mentioned I don't work near the Navy Yard but it was still too close for comfort.  Of course, something like that could happen anywhere.  My heart goes out to the families of those killed.

Sadly, it seems we are becoming immune to these mass shootings.  With Aurora, CO and Sandy Hook all regular programming was interrupted and the newscasts concentrated on just that one story.  Today it was more like, this is what happened, now back to our regular programming.

He would have been mine, if I hadn't already watched Lloyd Bridges in SEA HUNT.

Too tired to watch anything else tonight.  I ate my two donuts - great.  My lunch was 450 calories - so stated in the CPK menu - so after the jog I netted out at 150 so even if the two donuts were six hundred each, which they probably weren't, I'm still okay.

Thank you.  How lazy can I get, not bothering to look it up myself.

I went and looked at the Oppo line. They look very impressive - and they're pretty expensive.

Apparently also, there is a difference between "Universal" and "Region-Free."

Universal lets you watch Martian DVDs.

That's a different girl from the one originally announced, isn't it?

Yes, Sophia Grace Brownlee was originally announced.  She made some YouTube video and Ellen DeGeneres had her on her show and Sophia (and her little sister) became famous for a few minutes.  I wonder if the original casting of her was to play on that hype and then they realized that she might not have actual musical theater experience (or talent ::) ) and they recast her.  Just a thought.

And I also turned down the role.

I believe there were four volumes when they were released in 2004.  I have all of them - somewhere!
