I posted this to the NYT comments, and since I know the world must be waiting for a parody of "STAR"  :) - couldn't work in Joy Behar, though

Tune of “Star” (Julie Andrews rendition for the seriously egregiously overlooked this year, like Denzel Washington, Daniel Craig, Zachary Quinto, Michael Hall, Daniel Radcliffe)

If his fame in one hundred nations makes the nominators nod off
If the buzz about his ovations only gives them reason to scoff
If those nominators say close but no cigar
The chances are:  That guy’s a big star

If the fellow’s fame the world over makes committee members all sneer
If his grosses rolling in clover makes them act like he isn’t here
If those nominators ignore his repertoire
The chances are:  The guy’s a big star

If the crowds pursue him, and press people woo him
The Tony folk view him as sub-par
If the guy is someone critics give a hand for
Someone tourists pay a grand for
Somehow the committee acts bizarre
He’s a genuine, wonderful, down-to-earth, talented
Perfect but Tony-free star!

It is also, apparently, National Orange Juice Day.

And, as we all know, a day without orange juice is like a day without sunshine. Or something like that.

Good morning, all! Lumpy night of sleep, and I am glad to be up and moving.

I live in a house of cards: last night I put a book back on the shelf and the entire row of books fell, so today I have some serious tidying to do. I will follow that up with some computer work on 1917, Jerome Kern, the Princess Theatre and OH, BOY! for the May 15 Trinity Church concert. I also have some work to accomplish on the full score for JUBILEE that I'm assembling. And that's my day.

DR cillaliz, you had quite a day! Fantastic!

DR TCB, I don't know if today or yesterday would have been your mother's birthday, but I send hugs and my sympathy.

DR George, I have far too often purchased something that already lives in this apartment. I think the last time was a second copy of the SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING CD.  Memo to self: check alphabetization on shelf before assuming you do not own it.

DR FJL, I turnedaround from talking to Larry Goldberg and you were gone! I'm sorry about that.

If I had the money, I'd record A CONNECTICUT YANKEE, I MARRIED AN ANGEL, and PAL JOEY for Emily Skinner t play the Vivienne Segal roles. She was doing one number yesterday, and I thought, OMG, she's so wonderful and funny, she'd be perfect. All these revivals of PAL JOEY go for fierce broads (Lupone) or actresses singing flat (Stockard Channing), and the role's actually sophisticated comedy.

So, back to Emily: she was really wonderful, but so were the other two ladies, whose names I do not recall, and Jason can do little wrong in my book.  From the reviews I'd read earlier, I'd expected the fashion show to be embarrassing. I thought it was funny and silly.

elmore - LOL, no problem, I thought we'd said good bye as I went to catch the elevator.

The other ladies were Cameron Adams and Lynne Halliday.  Is Lynne related to Richard Halliday?

Elmore - The only number I felt approached controversial was the red-hot version of "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair."

Wonder what you thought of that approach to the number, if it registered as, well, inflammatory?

Nothing in the show bothered me at all. I kept thinking how good the cast was and how good and clever David Krane's work was and what a nice synthesis there was in the work with Steve Cole and his choreographer. I also liked the projections and the costumes. I had fun, and I found the ending very touching. I feel very fortunate that I saw Mary Martin in HELLO, DOLLY! I later sawChanning several times in the role, along with Ginger Rogers on 1966. Martin was very funny and very different from Channing; they were both brilliant. Rogers was okay.

Thanks to everyone for the vibes for Dancing With the [Putnam County] Stars.

I am a bit distressed about the outcome.....but what can I say.  Sharon and I were in last place....yes, last place.

The strange thing is that there were 12 couples in the competition.  Eleven couples got perfect scores of 30, and Sharon and I got 29.

One of the judges doesn't like Sharon OR her husband, and she had mentioned that he might do something like that.....which he did.  So it was kind of a bummer....but we had fun.  And much money was raised for the Putnam County Youth Development Commission.

The audience was a bit confused as well....but it was a nice evening.

Not that 29 or 30 really matters, but how ridiculous for a judge to let their personal feelings determine how they vote.  And also how weird to give all but one perfect scores.

Cole's sister Harper (age 2) wasn't as interested in ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE. She did like the part where, after Sally (played by June Kenney), finds that she has been shrunk to the size of a Barbie doll, she lets our a scream.

Harper thought that was funny, and proceeded to re-enact the scream over and over, and then laugh.

My recent angst has been over my troublesome back issues. The program that worked for me for many years just isn't working anymore. I REALLY don't want surgery and have my doubts that it'd be all that helpful, anyway. So I am looking for alternatives. On Tuesday I'll see a new doc, the primary care physician that I selected at UCLA. I hope he understands my condition--the majority of doctors do not. Then we'll see whether he approves the referrals I request (it's a long list) and how much of the cost I'll have to take care of myself.

My hairdresser's neighbor recently had the surgery. I'd like to talk to her. Our situations are somewhat different, but it might be enlightening.

Singdaw, sorry about your rash. I discovered Derma-e's vitamin E cream to be very helpful when I had shingles. It's not greasy and quite affordable. Can be used for any number of things. I now use it as a hand cream. Available at health food stores.

Thank you to everyone for the good thooughts about my mom's birthday.  Her birthday is May 3.  I doubt that my mom would have lived to be 98 (although her mother died just five months short of 100), but we still got robbed of a lot of years we should have had with her.

Very funny, Fred!

Vibes that the doctors (and insurance company) can make everything work out for you, Jeanne!

Not that 29 or 30 really matters, but how ridiculous for a judge to let their personal feelings determine how they vote.  And also how weird to give all but one perfect scores.

I agree, and I mostly find it odd everyone got top scores.

Wonderful photo DR Jrand!!!!!

Thank you DR JENNIFER.  Yes DR ELMORE....and it's politic politics as well....Sharon is the only elected official who was a dance contestant and the judge IS a real judge at the local courthouse...so it was a double whammy!

He only made himself look bad.  I real judge should know how to be impartial-right.

DR JEANNE no it is not usual for everyone to get a perfect score.  It was unusual DR JENNIFER.  But there it was, and yes it was a slight to us.

After the first SIX times got perfect scores, I had kind of decided that they had planned to give everyone a perfect score and let the costume and personality numbers decide the winner.

But shortly after the intermission after Sharon and I danced and our first score was 9 - I figured if that was the case, he planned it to just get back at her.  And there was really nothing the other two judges could do except go ahead as planned for the rest of the evening.....30's for everyone....except us.

But yes, I do think it made him look bad.  I don't know if they plan on any changes for next year, and I am not so certain I will bother participating either.

Interesting how they do it.  You both look sharp in the photo and I'm sorry you came in last because of the judge.  Imagine how competitors feel when judges do that, something we see time to time, and winning is extremely important to their profession.

TCB, I have scoliosis, a curve in my spine. I don't know if the curve has become worse or I've developed a second curve. It's quite uncomfortable and it affects all sorts of other things. The most likely surgery would be the Harrington rod, a rod inserted into my spine to straighten it.

Back from a lovelier than lovely show.  Cast did great, and we got through most of it unscathed.  We had a fun sold out house - I felt they were a little slow coming to the patter - part of that was my fault - I second-guessed myself, which I should NEVER EVER do - I had some really funny stuff in the beginning of the show, basically doing the four questions of Passover but with funny stuff at the end.  I did the first two and got nice laughs and then I just made the decision not to do that last two, which was stupid of me - I had a momentary feeling they wouldn't land, but even if they hadn't I could have used that for fodder.  Never again - if it's on the paper I'm saying it.  However, my biggest laugh of the evening was unscripted.

Today's "Chamber Music" went well, but was not without a scary incident.  Before she got to the theater, Kate, the woman who plays the "Woman with the Notebook" had symptoms like a heart attack!  911 was called and the EMTs confirmed that she wasn't having a heart attack, so they didn't take her to the hospital.  She came into the theater to calm down a bit, but a friend did take her to the emergency room.  We were without our "Woman with the Notebook"!  Fortunately, Pug, our director was able to go on in her place with the script.  The other very fortunate part is that the "Woman with the Notebook" always has papers with her, so Pug was able to easily keep the script with her.  Also, she's directed the show four times, so she's really familiar with the show.  The stage manager gave the curtain speech and said that Pug was playing the role.  She did very well...very different than Kate, but still good.  They were a good audience.  Not filled like last night, only about 10 people less.  Kate should be well enough to come back on Thursday for our last weekend. :)

After the show, I went to my parents' house for dinner.  My mom made tacos.  My sister was there, too.  We played Scrabble (I didn't win), and then a couple of games of Phase 10 (I won the second game!).  I then came home and now am watching TV.
