Not sure if the word "Happy" is appropriate for today, but those that have the day off when you are going to some kind of sale remember what today is for.

Good morning, all! At 11:15 or so I will head down to Trinity Church for the first MERRY WIDOW rehearsal. It will be nice to get back in the midst of these after the ROBERTA break.  This will be my week until Thursday's concert.  After that, my life is wide open and I am on vacation until the next job shows up.

The Faux Finale of MAD MEN was entertaining.....more on the business side than the personal side - which is how I like it.  And Don & Peggy were again mostly front and center.

I watched the first hour of THE NORMAL HEART....since I don't like some of the actors that are in the film....that was enough for me.

Back in 1986, I was in a production of AS IS, which I think is the benchmark play on the subject....and there doesn't really need to be another movie....just watch LONGTIME COMPANION again.

Alien Nation

His new tv show is okay....it may have been canceled, I'm not sure.....

I was lucky to see the original productions of both AS IS and THE NORMAL HEART, and I much preferred Larry Kramer's play. I'm a fan of Wiliam Hoffman's writing, but the visceral impact of THE NORMAL HEART was amazing. I couldn't even tell you the actors in AS IS,  nor do I have any memories of the play, but I still vividly remember moments of THE NORMAL HEART: Concetta Tomei throwing papers into the air and spinning in frustration in that wheelchair, Joel Grey hurling contents of a shopping bag as the actor playing Felix wept on the floor.

I just went to IMBD, and I was amazed to see that I had a  Drama Book Shop customer and Upper West Side neighbor in AS IS! I had forgotten that. I don't even know where Ken is these days. Haven't seen him in years.

The production began at the Circle Rep, and my friend Stuart White was the director of the Circle Rep Theatre Lab and one of my first personal AIDS casualties. Stuart brought me in to the Theatre Lab to help him with a workshop. He was abig fan of the cabaret act I was working with, and I still miss him. His partner Clifford wrote a wonderful biographical novel, THE GREAT SUNFLOWER, Both gone now.

According to Wickipedia, the Heinz company had at one time (maybe still do) 57 different food products (ketchup, pickles, beans, etc.)

While riding a train in New York City in 1896, Henry Heinz saw a sign advertising 21 styles of shoes, which he thought was clever. Although Heinz was manufacturing more than 60 products at the time, Henry thought 57 was a lucky number. So, he began using the slogan "57 Varieties" in all his advertising. Today the company has more than 5,700 products around the globe, but still uses the magic number of "57."

Unfortunately the young  man, although having  been gifted with a voice that would allow him to call games at Yankee stadium sans  artificial amplification devices, he was cursed  with the burden of a limited vocabulary: forced to use the same word to express both surprise, and anger, although he deftly used it as an adjective, verb, and noun.

I did get the news that my sister-in-law's father is now in hospice.  It's not really a surprise, but difficult none-the-less

We did have a little more rain today and could get some more tonight.  Now we're only about 4 or 5 inches below normal

Thanks Vixmom.  This is DR Samantha's grandfather.  She is very close to him. I talked to her tonight, but I don't think she had heard the latest as she was waiting for her parents to call her back  I don't think she ever checks in here anymore, but I'm sure she knows by now

I wonder if BK will ever reveal if there was a "for educational purposes only " documentation of the successful Abner

If there is, I also would love the opportunity to study the theatrical elements that make up this theatrical production...for educational purposes.

;)

I have spent the last ninety minutes doing a first pass at the e-mail I'll be sending out regarding the bad business of a few weeks ago.  I have sent that first pass to three people for their comments before I actually send it out, which I'd like to do tomorrow.  IF it goes out tomorrow, then I'll tell the tale in Wednesday's notes.

I will admit that I am curious as heck, BK; but I leave it up to you if you want to share the story with us.

I, for one, have been extremely curious as to what the bad business was.  I hope that it's all resolved to your satisfaction!

The bad business resolved itself over a week ago - actually, in truth, there was nothing to resolve - it was a witch hunt that fizzled because there were no witches to hunt.  It was the manner in which it occurred and the denial of even the most basic human and constitutional rights that is at issue.  In other words, I could let it go and that would be that, but I'm afraid at this point that's not going to happen and I will have apologies from everyone involved.  If I don't get them, then I will look into which course of action to take.  I don't the the college or the district is going to want action taken - they are in a VERY bad position because of the way in which it all was handled.

I'll call a local place tomorrow (not the dealer).  They do good work.  The library actually takes their courier vans there for servicing, so it has to be good.
