Good morning, all! I slept late.

I am on my first cup of coffee, pondering a walk to the post office, and wondering how soon the rain will land. it's rather dark and ominous outside.

I am thinking that today is a home renovation day. If I do not end up sitting at the computer all day.

TOD

In past lifetimes I might have pointed the finger at heat waves, back in the days when I'd be living in some place with no air conditioning.  I despised those times like nothing else.

But not any more.  The two storms that took out our power for three days each take the prize:  the Halloween Nor'easter of 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.  No electric, no water (if you're on your own system), and the biggie:  no heat.  And conditions were freezing.  Enough was enough.  These two storms are the reason I now have a total-house generator.

Tuesday.  It is cool and rainy here.....so no complaints.

We have a brush up rehearsal tonight, so I have to travel down to the theatre.....

Lots of work for DR ryacko....which is good news.

I have been through several snow days that included NO TRAVEL and sometimes NO electricity....but that's about it.

Of course this year we have predictions of HEAVIER THAN NORMAL snowfall....so this might be it.

Back in 2012, when David and Britt Cryer were in town for THE CRUCIBLE, they were still living through Hurricane Sandy....they live in New Jersey....

Just thinking back -- I only lived in one apartment in L.A. that had no A/C at all (Clark Drive in the Flats of Beverly), and I don't have any idea now how I survived there without it from 1975 to 1979.  I had what might have been the coolest apartment in the building, and it was miserable during heat waves, whether Santa Anas or the regular kind with humidity.  They were all bad.

The other California apartment that didn't have it (right on the coast in Redondo Beach) truly didn't need it, except during maybe one week out of the year, usually in August or September, and that's probably exactly the weather they're having right now.

But a couple of others had poorly functioning A/Cs, which is very nearly as bad as having none, and that's why I've always looked back on those years as being without it so much of the time.

TOD - The week following Hurricane Ike's visit to SW Ohio on September 14, 2008.  The wind that Sunday afternoon knocked out power all over the Cincinnati/Dayton area and our power company had sent crews to Texas and Louisiana in anticipation that THEY would be hit.  It took a while for enough crews to get here to start restoring our power and we were without it until late Friday.  Fortunately, temperatures were moderate, so we didn't need heat or air conditioning and our household had hot water.  Richard was retired, but I still had to go to work.  I showered and dressed at home and did my hair and make-up at the library.  The big challenge was finding coffee on the way.

Played a dress rehearsal last night with just my bass player, and tonight's the full band.  This is the challenging one, where everyone must learn how to squeeze themselves into this very tiny "pit", and then play at volumes that never cover the singers.  And I don't mean hardly ever.  I mean never.  The great thing about this small theater is that we perform everything "acoustically", with no miking.  It can be a challenge but it's so rewarding when you get it right.

Good Morning DR Jennifer --

Have you ever tried a peanut butter cup S'more?  OMG, delicious.

I received an email from Cirque du Soleil yesterday regarding their 30th anniversary concerts in December.  Although I have always loved all things Cirque -- I don't do Montreal in the Winter.  Even though, I have been traveling yearly since 1985 to visit family -- the latest I have gone was in October.  I've never lived in with Snow -- that trip nearly resulted in a fall from a frosty deck.  The central valley floor of California gets a dusting every ten years or so.

Any who, here's the link to the concerts, which are scheduled for December 13 to 28, at the Saint Jean Baptiste Church: http://tinyurl.com/ousjgt8

DR Ginny, what was your absolute, # 1 favorite thing about your visit to France?

That's really hard to say, DR MBarnum, but there was one place I could have stayed a lot longer than we did - Pont du Gard, the Roman aqueduct.  There's a nice visitor center and, if we'd been on our own, we'd have spent some time there and watched the informational movie.  We'd have taken a picnic lunch and maybe hiked a bit more around the site.  We were quite rushed that morning because it was the first of three major stops that day.

Well, I could use a credit card instead, but the same thing would happen. I just don't carry much cash on me and there is no way I am going back to writing checks at the store.

I still don't know why, and they couldn't explain it to me, they cancelled the unused debit card. In addition to never having been used, I never shop at the store that had the breach.

It sounds like this is going to force you not to spend money.

The major difference with a credit card is that you won't be responsible for the missing money while they figure out the problem.  We don't trust debit cards since our info was stolen and items were purchased in Europe.  Eventually the bank returned our money.

Does a peanut butter cup s'more have the marshmellow and stuff inside the peanut butter cup?   I do like marshmellows. But not sure if I would like anything besides that and the chocolate and peanut butter.

I guess I should have been more clear -- make a regular S'more with graham cracker, toasted marshmello and chocolate.  But in place of the chocolate -- use a peanut butter cup.  OY, making me drool as I type this!  BTW, went to the store today and had to pick up a peanut butter cup!  LOL

And because 3 nights a week of BIG BROTHER is evidently not enough for me, I have started watching BIG BROTHER Australia on Youtube.

Have you been watching Big Brother London?  Leslie Jordan is one of the two Americans in the house, the other being Gary Busey.  Ugh.

Leslie Jordan was a hoot on Wll & Grace as well as his many other sitcom appearances.  He makes me laugh!

My credit union cancelled my debit card due to the long ago breach at Target.

And they cancelled the replacement debit card that they sent to me last week, which I hadn't even used yet, due to the breach at Home Depot.  :'(

Same thing happened with my credit union credit card and Target, but have yet to hear anything about the Home Depot breach.  But then, haven't been to Home Depot in a while. :D

I am head of social ministry and  my church and I have has a collection going all summer for items to put together kits for our  fall mission trip  (I call it Socks and Sandwiches)

We collected  toothbrushes with cases, toothpaste, soap, washcloths, socks, deodorant, combs, shampoo,  baseball caps, and individually wrapped hard candies

I had put up a schedule so hoping that people would bring an items each week so it would be easy to count and sort and store  but , God Bless their hearts, they brought things in any which way  and tied them  up in  plastic bags with eighteen  knots  so everything ended up in  bags  in a big pile in the bag of the storage closet (this closet is about 8' x 25')

Hulu is a free service; however, they have a more premium service called Hulu Plus.  I cut the cord on my cable connection last year and signed up for Hulu Plus and Netflix.  Wasn't using Netflix, so pulled the plug on that as well.  I miss a few shows from the Food Network and TLC, but have been to busy to miss it.  Oh, BTW, I do have the free local (network) channels.  Crazy thing, once I pulled the cable connection -- I now have free access to new PBS channels I had never heard of.  I love CreateTV -- the best of PBS: travel, arts & crafts, cooking, etc.

Topic of the Day:

We've had this topic before and this is what I what I wrote (it's easier to search and quote than Try To Remember [a Fantasticks reference ;) ):

Quote
Topic of the Day:  I've only been through a couple of earthquakes and a really bad ice storm.  The ice storm was kind of cool.  Trees frozen solid, covered in a layer of ice.  It was beautiful and dangerous at the same time.  Some of the trees broke and brought down the power lines.  I think that that was the longest that I was without power...five days, I think.
