Well, you've read the notes, you've had your full report and now it is time for you to post until the reported cows come home.
-
First post huzzah!
-
I have enjoyed the full reports, oh yes, the full reports have been enjoyed in Indiana! They will be missed, but I am sure we will get Full Reports on other subjects, and they will be enjoyed as well!
-
Well one of my favorite mini-series is QBVII - based on the novel by Leon Uris. First broadcast on ABC in 1974....the Jerry Goldsmith score was tremendous!
Anthony Hopkins, Ben Gazzarra, Lee Remick, Robert Stephens, Kristoffer Tabori.....such a wonderful cast....and such a great story. One of the first, and one of the best, I think. ;D
My second choice would be RICH MAN, POOR MAN....
Peter Strauss as Rudy Jordache and Nick Nolte as Tom Jordache....their parents Axel and Mary played by Ed Asner and Dorothy McGuire....
Bill Bixby, Tim McIntire, William Smith, Dorothy Malone and Van Johnson.
What a terrific story from the novel by Irwin Shaw.
I think RM,PM is my favorite...a hard choice to make so many to choose from. I am leaving them for the other DR's......
Oh....HOLOCAUST....
-
Oh, my. Yesterday after I did the laundry (Anthony is on LI for another clown show) it was about 6:15pm. I laid down on the bed and never got up until 5:30am. I am now at work and just caught up on the posts from last evening. I guess working overtime takes a toll.
Jose, will you be coming up to NY on October 6th. You sort of mentioned it in passing a few days ago. If you are, I'll include you in the reservation for Joe Allen's (Wednesday, October 6th at 5pm, 326 W 46th St., on Restaurant Row between 8th and 9th Avenues, closer to 8th 212-581-6464).
I'll have to think about miniseries. In the meantime another vacation photo.
My sister, Anthony and me in a Red Wing pottery shop. Red Wing is in southern Minnesota and is famous for pottery and work shoes. While there I was able to find a replacement for our nesting bowl set. It's from the 40s or 50s and there are four bowls of increasing size, one red, one turquoise, one green and one yellow (at least that's what I thought until I saw other sets of other colors). The yellow bowl had fallen off the shelf a while back and broke. I found a replacement for only $4.50! Considering full sets at the antique store were going for $40 to $60 dollars, that's a bargin for me. Anyway, here's the picture. We're not holding the yellow bowl (we hadn't found it yet) we were just posing for a cute picture.
-
P.S., Pogue, thanks for the Cincinnati radio link. I'll add it to my bookmarks.
-
Rich Man, Poor Man hit the tube back when I was in college. I remember how every night the dorm would stop everything else for the new episode. And this was in an all-men's dorm!
More recently, Taken was fairly good, at least for the first half. But I preferred to call it "Tooked." (The second half of the series was, well, a letdown. *sigh*)
-
Favorite mini-series would be a toss up between I, CLAUDIUS and ELIZABETH R.
I did love ROOTS and RICH MAN, POOR MAN (though as we got to the very end of RICH MAN, I tired of it a bit).
I have to shamefacedly admit I've never seen THE THORN BIRDS, SHOGUN, or LONESOME DOVE: three of the most famous and popular of all miniseries.
-
I've just been flipping through the stack of to-watch DVDs and have settled on my choice for today: it will be FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT.
-
Such a good choice MATTH..... And watch for Mrs Odets (Gertrude Hoffman) from MY LITTLE MARGIE...she puts in a rather astonishing appearance in the final sequence of FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT! She's spry for an old lady!
Well I am off to revive my dead battery. Pray for Rosemary's baby!
-
Without a doubt, HOLOCAUST where I first discovered Ms. Streep and Ms. Feldsush.
Saw The Cocteau's DAMES AT SEA last night. Though not a perfect DAMES AT SEA, it was much better than I had expected after reading the reviews and internet postings. The woman Scott Siegel (and his lovely wife Barbara) referred to as "a triple threat - can't sing, can't act, can't dance" may be the weakest one in a cast of six, but she is by no means that bad. The show is always a lot of fun and this production mostly did it justice. It's just unfortunate that half the board of directors of the theatre (many with them for over 30 years) quit because they didn't think DAMES AT SEA was the kind of show they should be doing.
Today I am seeing the musical version of MEET JOHN DOE. The selections from it that I heard at "Bound for Broadway" were the highlight of that show, so I hope the whole work holds up.

The first line of People is
We travel single-o
Single-o was a typical way to go on a train or a boat, and stands for Single Occupancy. This was discussed at length on ratm some time ago.
When I was 8 or 9, a family friend showed up with a stranger who was introduced to me as "The man who wrote the score to Funny Girl"
"A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Styne" I responded.
And they all had a big laugh over that (a boy so young being able to identify the composer of Funny Girl) - but it was Bob Merrill, its lyricist. He'd written one of my father's favorite scores, Take Me Along. I'm also a big fan of Carnival, Funny Girl and Sugar but I can't stand to listen to Henry Sweet Henry - perhaps the least played cast album in my collection. Merrill has certainly run quite a range, from very good, to horrid.
DR Stuart asked "Care to take on that whole "light of two eyes enfolding" stuff??"
and I can't be certain what lyric you mean. We were talking about The Music That Makes Me Dance, which includes the line,
He'll sleep and he'll rise, in the light of two eyes that adore him.
Bore him it might, but he won't leave my sight for a glance.
I don't see the word enfolding, but the line contains the poetic concept that eyes give off light. If I'm going to watch him, day and night, he'll be in the light that comes from my eyes.
False rhymes abound in Merrill's work, but some of the emotions expressed are quite wonderful, as in Beautiful Candy and If Your Promised Me a Rose.
-
And I didn't put ANGELS IN AMERICA down because, despite its Emmy classification, I considered MILLENIUM APPROACHES and PERESTROIKA three hour movie versions of the two plays and not a miniseries.
-
I was going to say that I've never watched an entire mini-series (a horrible confession for someone in my field) - until Matt H mentioned I, CLAUDIUS. That one I watched and loved. I saw and enjoyed most of ELIZABETH R, as well, but may have missed some episodes.
-
Did DR Stuart say that NAMT once had a commissions committee? That's news to me. Intriguing news, indeed - never knew about that.
NAMT is not NYMF although they're certainly close (and have some of the same people on their boards). NYMF is currently going on and is the first event of its kind, an effort to produce as many new musicals as possible over a short space of time in a handful of theatres. NAMT is not really for the public - it's a way for regional producers to get a look at a bunch of shows the NAMT deems worthy. Quite often, these are shows that have been hanging around for ten or twenty years NOT getting productions. I've noticed their selections are skewed towards famous writers.
To hear the work of exciting musical theatre creators like Steve Schachlan, Sammy Buck and Gary Adler, NYMF is the place for you (and yes, pronounce that acronym) - I'm glad to hear DR WEL is going. I'm going to try to catch the Peter Mills revue, Taxi Cabaret, next week. It contains his hysterical song about a caveman coming out to his parents.
-
I had a surprise late-night visit from my darling daughter and her friend, so didn't get to sleep until almost two and now I'm up at eight. Maybe I'll get in some winks this afternoon by putting in a DVD and falling asleep. I must also go to Grant Geissman's house, do our final little tweaks, and put the new book to bed.
-
I have both I CLAUDIUS and ELIZABETH R on DVD sets (and had them in large boxed videotape sets before they were released on DVD), and I have spent many hours watching and rewatching the magnificent acting of the principals in those shows.
I have THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII, too, and although I think it's terrific, it has always ranked just a slight notch below ELIZABETH R and I CLAUDIUS for me.
-
Thanks to everyone for the good vibes and suggestions. It appears I am meeting with "the board" tomorrow to choose another show... I'll give a report when I know something...
-
I have never seen a whole mini-series. I think I saw a bit of Roots when it first aired and also a little bit of The Blue and The Grey...and when I say a little bit, I mean about 15 minutes or so!
-
Many years ago there was a mini-series I think called "Fresno" starring Carol Burnett, which was a spoof of something. I'm sure someone here can remember more detail.
I guess the reason I didn't watch any mini-series much is because I didn't devote enough time to any tv show to see all the parts.
Today we have a busy day scheduled: First, we are going to an estate sale -- a first for me, but since DR Sandra loves old things and I know slightly the lady holding the sale, we'll give it a try. She said her mother had some neat things. Then we take my friend's 9-year-old son to the dinner theater to see DR Sandra's favorite show -- Forever Plaid. I should be exhausted by the end of the day, as this little fella is quite a challenge, but he needs some individual attention.

The Big Voice: God or Merman is a wonderfully moving show, with some real belly laughs in its intriguing book by Jim Brochu. (You can bet I'm spelling these names wrong.) Jim and the show's songwriter, Steve Schachlan, are also the show's performers, and it's a true story - about their lives. Now, there's an added kick to seeing the actual people portraying their actual story, but the audience is called upon to suspend more disbelief than usual, as they're both gray-haired middle-agers and the central question is a young person's existentialist: "What should I do with my life?" And Jim and Steve are not young. Nor is Jim Ethel Merman, although he's more convincing as La Merm than Steve is as anything other than his present-tense self.
So, one has to be more impressed with Jim, who not only plays a variety of well fleshed-out characters, he's written a libretto that keeps things rolling along at a good pace. At its worst, The Big Voice is familiar: Steve sings about being a gay young man in a Baptist Arkansas family "In the Closet" and you think you've heard the same song a million times before. At its best, the way an appreciation of Merman leads to an answer to that existential query is cathartic and affirming in the best sense of the word. I really had a great time at The Big Voice, although I can't imagine appreciating it on record.
These days, there are so many shows that people love on records but never see. It's led me to believe that having a good recording of one's show isn't just one thing, it's the ONLY thing. But something's rotten in the state of musicals: A show can be terrific due to its book (rather than its score) and then, where is it? The Big Voice is at the Belt Theatre (a trippy place) on 37th, just east of Ninth.

It has become apparent that this, the best of all possible boards - oh, a Candide reference, is mini-series deficient, even though one of our dear readers, Pogue, has just finished writing one (currently filming) for NBC. Even I am mini-series deficient. In fact, I've only seen a handful, including Taken, which I didn't like as much as others seem to. I missed all the classics, save for Holocaust and Roots, both of which were very well done. Oh, and I saw the redo of The Shining, which I thought was dreadful. I would like to see the mini version of Valley of the Dolls just for fun, even though I've heard it's terrible.
-
I believe Brochu and Schachlin are the team that gave us The Last Session, a show which a lot of people like but which wasn't really to my tastes for various reasons.
-
When in tarnation did I go over 6000 postings?
-
I never saw The Last Session, but its lack of traditional commercial appeal (a musical about a songwriter dying of AIDS? I think I'll see Cats instead) is mentioned in The Big Voice, which is about two young men who think they're going to go into the clergy discovering the joys of musicals.
-
Yes the gentlemen were in Indianapolis when THE LAST SESSION was done earlier this year. And Jim Brochu wrote a terrific book called Afternoons with Lucy...about some time he spent with YOU KNOW WHO!
Oh my I forgot about the VOD miniseries....not a patch on the movie movie..... I used to have it taped, but I may have taped over it. I will check around.....would you like to see at least what I have of it, MR BK?
Blanche (Garfein) Baker was also in HOLOCAUST looking all the world like her mother, the lovely Carroll.
RICH MAN POOR MAN made a star of Mr Nick Nolte!
-
I hope Mr Charles Pogue takes a peek at the lovely movie poster I put on the board for him last night!
-
Yes, I'd like to see the VOTD mini-series if you've got it. It's quite a beautiful morning here in the City of Studio - already quite hot and people and dogs taking their morning constitutionals. I have already spent more time in my yard here at the new home environment than I did in the entire six years I lived in my other home environment. Funny that.
-
Last night Dear Reader JRand54 posted a copy of the front page of a newspaper from the date of my birth and he said,
DRJAY it seems there was not room to report your birth on the front page of the LIMA (OH) NEWS...what with the blizzard, Westinghouse, and Kefauver....Boston Traffic Paralyzed!
Lemme tell you: I still hear about that snowstorm every time my birthday rolls around!
-
Good Morning!
Well, I need to start getting my stuff in order here before I head out to lunch in Studio City today. -And my venture in Hollywood. Then I'll be heading back here, probably take a nap, then in for the closing show...
THE LAST SESSION: I ended up "playing" for a production in Richmond earlier this year. The original lead who happened to play piano had to drop out of the show, so when the director who does not play piano stepped into the part...
Mini-Series: "The Thorn Birds" - I still remember the homilies at Sunday Mass about how we should not be watching the show.. and so scandalous that it was shown during Easter week! "Shogun" - ...Must be a Richard Chamberlain thing. -And I still can't believe how bad the musical was... But definitely not as bad as THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. ;)
OK - I need to get going. Hopefully, I'll be able to check back in this afternoon...
Laters...
-
Brideshead Revisited is the best mini-series I've seen.
-
A bunch of airplanes fell off an aircraft carrier the day I was born, DRJAY! But then I guess I couldn't expect a snowstorm in August!
-
I don't think I've seen ANY mini-series all the way through. I know my dad loves many. "Shogun," "Winds of War," "Roots," etc...the historical ones, really. I do have a video CD of "The Shining," but I've never watched it. I watched most of Stephen King's "Golden Years" but didn't see the last couple of episodes. Since I think it ended much too early, I want to consider "Remember WENN" as a mini-series! I loved that show. I wish it could be released on DVD...the whole series!
-
Off to help my sister with her gargage sale. :)
-
I'm with Jay:
"Brideshead Revisited" is the BEST TELEVISION I'VE EVER SEEN!
That said, I'm with Matt on "I, Claudius"!
And I loved "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma" and "Persuasion" on A&E.
I was also quite partial to "The Winds of War" and I hung in there when "Pearl" and "From Here to Eternity" aired, although I have no memories of them whatsoever other than that Natalie Wood was no Deborah Kerr and that "Pearl" had wonderful teasers.
I think "Marco Polo" was the most laughable series ever aired...what with a non-charismatic didn't-have-a-clue lead actor. No matter how lavish the production, the title character OUGHT to have been at least "interesting". He wasn't. Not for me. And someway, somehow, the voters of the TV Academy selected this over "Brideshead" as best of its year.
The Emmy has been nought but a huge joke to me ever since.
-
Easily, I, CLAUDIUS is the best mini-series ever for me. It is my favourite TV thing ever! I also love the 8-hour NICHOLAS NICKLEBY done by the Royal Shakespeare Comapny for the BBC. Both ELIZABETH R and HENRY VIII are great. PBS also ran some terrific mini-series...POLDARK, BY THE SWORD DIVIDED (great series about the English Civil War), and THE BRETTS (about a theatrical dynasty iin the 1920's which was wonderful). I recently picked up a British mini-series cheap at a video store called SEX,CHIPS, and ROCK & ROLL which was a lot of fun. Oh! And let's not forget PENNIES FROM HEAVEN and THE SINGING DETECTIVE.
Got to run. KHARTOUM is on...the scene between Heston & Olivier.
-
Well....I don't have it on tape....handled everyone of my VHS tapes and checked all the labels.
Sorry....darn....
-
I may have a garage sale and get rid of some of the crap that's piled up in my garage.
-
JRand54, we did indeed enjoy the poster of Ms. Wilkinson. It is also a movie that I was not aware of. I must ask her about it at the next Ray Courts show. She will be there in addition to my pal Denny Miller.
-
George, smart move staying home yesterday. Do you feel better today? Thanks for the vibes. :)
Bruce and Jose, have a great final show.
JRand did you get your car started?
Is it true one of your ancestors was King Henry XI?
Jose, how wonderful the children’s books are in two languages. Such a thoughtful gift.
Now to read today's posts.
-
Bruce, not a relief. I for one will miss the daily reports on the show.
Matt H thank you for the name, THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII. Keith Michell was wonderful as Henry.
ROOTS was another favorite.
I’m a bit groggy from the one little muscle relaxant I took last night. Maybe I will remember more mini series favorites later.
George I want WENN to end the series. We were left hanging and without any warning.
-
DRJANE - yes indeed the answer to both questions is YES.
I bought a new car battery....$66. And I am a descendant of Henry III (I had my numbers wrong) on my mother's side. I don't know who these Windsors think they are....pretenders to the throne, that's what I say!
Also known as Henry the Black King of Germany and by marriage King of Burgandy and Denmark and England. Between marrying princesses and appointing Popes, Hank got a lot done besides putting down revolts all over the Empire.
But you may still call me merely Jrand54.
-
Yes DR CP, by all means mention the film to Miss June. As I wrote, the ads in the newspaper were fascinating even though I knew I would NEVER be able to see such a movie!
Denny Miller co-star of Mona McCluskey.
-
Well the 1981 miniseries was last shown on The Romance Channel which is now (somehow) WE, Women's Entertainment. I have dropped them an email to see if Jacqueline Susann's Valley of the Dolls is on their schedule or at least still on their playlist.
I will keep you informed.
-
Yes, SHOGUN: THE MUSICAL has some horror stories connected with it, maybe not as many as with CARRIE but it certainly lives in infamy (an FDR reference). Poor Philip Casnoff barely got out with his life.
-
Yep, a few of us remember MONA MCCLUSKY well, not for Miss Juliet Prowse but for the hunky Mr. Miller.
-
Off now to get ready to attend YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN tonight. Will have some comments when I get home tonight.
-
Oh my, I am still recovering from DRJOSE's review of THE TEN SUGGESTIONS.
-
Read something funny....wonder if any of the reviewers will use it:
Val Kilmer as Moses in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - it gives a whole new meaning to the word Passover.
-
I may have a garage sale and get rid of some of the crap that's piled up in my garage.
I just sold my old vacuum cleaner for $3!! And it still had the old, filled vacuum bag inside it!
-
Read something funny....wonder if any of the reviewers will use it:
Val Kilmer as Moses in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS..
The ads, of course, proclaim "Val Kilmer IS Moses"
-
George, smart move staying home yesterday. Do you feel better today? Thanks for the vibes. :)
Anytime, for the vibes! And yes, I feel much better. Actually, I felt much better kind of early yesterday (my back wasn't hurting that badly, but I had no intention of going to work after calling in sick. So today it's like I never had any problem at all. I love it when that happens!
-
JRand-that is really cool. Keith and I, especially Keith who does the research, are into genealogy. Does your family have the proof on paper?
-
Okay, I'm off again. I'm going to be house-sitting (as opposed to garage-selling) starting next week. I'm going to meet the owners of the house at 2:00. I've never met them, but the woman (Rita) is a co-worker of a very good friend of mine and I trust Claudia's (my friend) judgment. We'll see how it goes!
-
George I’m very happy you are feeling so well, I also think I'm a wee bit jealous. ;D Hope you like the house you will be sitting at. Will you be pet sitting as well as house sitting?
-
In my youth, I watched Roots and Holocaust because, well, you HAD to. I never thought Nicholas Nickelby counted as a mini-series - they just filmed the play, no? - but if it counts, that's my favorite. I think the only other one I ever watched was the one my father produced, Peter the Great. It won the Emmy and, effectively, ended his long career in television.
-
DRJANE my grandmother had a book that traced us back and we have done some other work on the internet. It is very interesting.
Of course once my ancestors were banished to the new world they got all mixed up with native Americans and so I am also 1/16 Cherokee Indian.
-
And interesting mixture, to say the least, Jrand!
-
It won the Emmy and, effectively, ended his long career in television.
Do you mean it was a fitting end to a long career or that it was the curse of the Emmy and he never worked again?
-
Will we EVER get to page 3??
-
...I believe so.
-
JRand, oh yes, very interesting. It is great you have the proof in a book. I have two interesting oral histories. The first Keith proved was only by marriage so I can no longer say I’m related to Captain Smith of the Titanic. The other is more difficult to prove and I’m sure it’s true. The proof I’m a direct descendant of a famous rabbi would be nice.
-
A S-L-O-W day. You'd think it was Yom Kippur or something....
-
I just sold my old vacuum cleaner for $3!! And it still had the old, filled vacuum bag inside it!
LOL! :) :D
-
And someone on another board just posted:
I got a practically brand new vacuum cleaner for just $3!! Just needs some new bags!
-
The ads, of course, proclaim "Val Kilmer IS Moses"
I wonder if
Moses
Supposes
Val Kilmer is... him!?! :)
-
Will we EVER get to page 3??
Moses; i mean Val Kilmer:
"Will we EVER get to the other side of the Red Sea?"
:D
-
I have two interesting ORAL histories.
I do too... but this IS a family site! ;D
-
;D
-
I do too... but this IS a family site! ;D
François, you're cracking me up!
-
François, you're cracking me up!
My! Thank you!
-
Interesting lineage DRJANE.....
-
Do you mean it was a fitting end to a long career or that it was the curse of the Emmy and he never worked again?
Dad's history with Peter the Great has many fascinating aspects. I don't think anyone views it as a good thing that, after the miniseries' success, he never worked again. He was the de facto producer of the project, which involved many, many months of filming in then-Communist Russia. But he didn't receive the Emmy; the show did. There was one post-Peter job, VP of then-producing-television MGM, but when that ended, he saw himself as wholly unemployable. So he left the left coast entirely.
-
My! Thank you!
You're welcome!
-
And me too.
GOOD VIBES AND GREAT SUCCESS ON THE CLOSING EVENING OF WHAT IF? to cast, crew, staff!
-
Tomovoz sent a few words from London, England!
He did enjoy "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", even though the star now is Jason Donovan...
"But the CAR is the star after all!"
Went to the new ALW* work, The Woman In White, and.... left at interval....
He is somewhere in France at the moment, and I will get to meet him and Colin on October 12!
Some people have all the fun, it seems!
*Andrew Lloyd Webber, of course!
-
;D
Gee!
At first sight, I tought it was a snake!
-----
Hummm... that old vacuum cleaner picture should have appeared too!
Oh, well! ???
-
DR Danise:
We hope you're doing fine and that the hurricane will leave you alone!
-
For those in New York City, NY. this might be of some interest to you!
New York Is Book Country Moves to Greenwich Village- 2 Day Literary Festival in Washington Square Park and The New York University Campus Saturday, October 2, 2004 and Sunday, October 3, 2004
On Sunday Washington Square Park is alive with the sound of excitement from The Target(R) Reading Stage with revered actress Julie Andrews
Edwards and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton as they read from their Dumpy the Dump Truck series, which the talented mother-daughter duo co-wrote.
-
François you are a riot. Thanks for the update on Tomovoz and please be sure to post info and photos when you meet him.
-
François you are a riot. Thanks for the update on Tomovoz and please be sure to post info and photos when you meet him.
Thanks, Jane!
I've always known that you're too good for my ego!
Pictures of the "Mr Tomovoz, I presume?"-meeting will definitely appear here first, before being sold to the National Enquirer.
-
Not so slow a day - we've been MUCH slower. Back from Grant Geissman's house; book is now to bed. Just spent a couple of hours chatting with my darling daughter and her friend. Now I shall jump in the pool and then shave and shower and get ready to be on my way to the theater for our final performance (for this run anyway). We're doing much better, audience-wise, with only about twenty seats left unsold.
-
Jason Donovan!!!
-
Save a seat for DRPANNI!
-

Noel did your father receive credit for producing the series? I don’t understand how it ended his career. What did your father do after he left the West Coast?
-
François, I want group photos and that means you are included in them. :)
Bruce, congrats on wrapping up the book-and a good day to do it on. Have fun tonight.
-
François, I want group photos and that means you are included in them. :)
Sorry, Jane, but BK won't approve of pornographic material on this site! ;D
-
We're doing much better, audience-wise, with only about twenty seats left unsold.
I would buy them, but, for some reason, I can't be there on time! :)
-
;D Are you this silly in person? I want a photo!!!!
-
Good Afternoon!
DR JRand54 - Mission Accomplished! -Alas, I will not be able to post my pics until I get back to Fairfax, VA tomorrow since I don't have my cable for my digital camera with me. -Actually, I just may send you the full-size digital photos, and they you can edit and post from those. All I'll say right now is that there are/were a lot of trees in front of the house. But beautiful trees a d a beautiful house. And that hill is steep! ;)
My lunch with Barbara was wonderful! We ended up at California Pizza Kitchen since ChinChin was closed due to Yom Kippur. -Actually, a bunch of store fronts along Ventura Blvd in Studio City were closed for Yom Kippur. So we just walked down a few blocks to CPK, and had a nice lunch there. -We were basically right around the corner from BK's new abode. And, yes, we dished the dirt, as well as shared some wonderful stories with each other. I never really got to know her last year when I was here, but she really has quite a history of directing and producing projects here in L.A. as well as in NYC.
She was also very complimentary about the show, and she had some very nice and generous praise for me. I was blushing. After sitting in an audition room with her last year for five days in a row, I know what a tough cookie she can be, so her praise was very much appreciated.
After lunch, I explored a little bit around Studio City. It was HOT! The temperature/clock outside the bank kept climbing in degrees... 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103... 104(!),... 105(!!!). After a brief ride on the 218 Bus, I headed over to Orange Grove, took my pics, then grabbed the 218 back in the other direction, and now I'm back in the Miracle Mile. And now I must pack up my stuff here, clean and get ready to head into the theatre...
-
DR Jay - Thanks for the reminder about "Brideshead Revisited". We had Brideshead parties when I was in high school. -Yes, we were Ultr-Drama-Geeks!
-
George I’m very happy you are feeling so well, I also think I'm a wee bit jealous. ;D Hope you like the house you will be sitting at. Will you be pet sitting as well as house sitting?
Yes, they (Rita and Chuck) have one cat...and I forget her name. She's an indoor/outdoor cat, so maintenance shouldn't be a problem. And she's supposed to be very affectionate. Rita couldn't find the cat, so I didn't get to see what she looks like. But I'll find out Tuesday. That's when I start. They'll be gone until October 24th!! That's a long time...but I'm trustworthy. ;) No, really I am! ;D
-
The Valley heat really wasn’t fun when I was pregnant and didn’t have air conditioning. Little did I know at the time how much worse being pregnant during the summer in New Jersey would be. Definitely not fond memories. ;D
Jose I sent you an email. From what I hear I'm not surprised at all Barbara had generous praise for you. :)
-
It sounds like a nice pet sitting job. Have fun.
-
I just sold my old vacuum cleaner for $3!! And it still had the old, filled vacuum bag inside it!
LOL! :) :D
I actually left it in for a reason! I have no idea what kind of bags it takes, so I left it in so that the new owners would know. I was trying to be helpful! ::)
-
OK.. Time for me to get my butt cheeks in gear for closing night... I'll post post-show/pre-flight....
Laters...
*Thank You to all DRs for their Well Wishes!
-
Yes, I think Nick Nickleby qualifies as a mini-series...It was 8-odd hours, show over several nights and was a television event.
-
DRJOSE thanks so much. Look forward to receiving the pics whenever. And yes if you just want to send me the pics as they come out....I will save them and edit etc.
THANKS THANKS THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Save a seat for DRPANNI!
Not to worry, Jrand - my name is writ large on some list I'm told.

So we just walked down a few blocks to CPK, and had a nice lunch there. -We were basically right around the corner from BK's new abode.
And two minutes from mine - with a big POOL right outside my door. You could've cooled off!
-
I'm on my way to the theater. Keep the home fries burning and lovely thoughts in your lovely heads. I'll be back after the show, but maybe not until after midnight, so the notes may be up late again.
-
I think the nights the notes go up late are lovely.
That means great memories are being made and good times are being had!
AND that we will get a FULL REPORT!
-
I, too, am off to the theater. Looking forward to reading hundreds of wildly interesting posts upon my return.
-
AND that we will get a FULL REPORT!
If JoseHoneyboy had gone to Panni's place, it would have been a Pool Report!
When do we get a Fool Report?!? ;)
-
JRand that was nice. :D
-
I, too, am off to the theater. Looking forward to reading hundreds of wildly interesting posts upon my return.
Hundreds and hundreds of... girls?
-- oh, a Mack & Mabel reference!
-
I am a nice person, no matter what you may hear from other people. LOL
-
Hey all of us who are home on Saturday night....and we know who we are....let's look around the net and find interesting things to post about.....I found something on EBAY. ;D
You can wash your baseball hat in the dishwasher and not have to worry about it losing its shape. Guy Haines probably has one of these! And it's only $6.52!!!
-
Next....................
-
You could've cooled off!
Do you know that this is quite a tongue-twister for a French person? :(
Well, not I.... of course! ;D
Can you say:
Un chasseur doit savoir chasser sans son chien? :o
-
I am a nice person, no matter what you may hear from other people. LOL
Well, Jane said "that" was nice!
Not YOU are nice! Can you see the nuance??? ;)
-

One can't stop progress, I tell you! :D
Hummm... $6.52?! Not 53 cents or 54 cents....
Interesting!
But.... I don't have a dishwasher! I do averything by hand! Handmade!
You had to know that! :)
-
Oh, I love that "averything"!
Don't you too?!
It looks usual!
It looks different!
It looks so Tex!
-
Oh....yes it is a nuance that I missed.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......well nice is as nice does. I guess then your baseball hats will all be either dusty or bent out of shape DRFRANCOIS....tragique!
-
I gather Jrand's looking for some other item from Ebay!
What will it be???
Stay Tex!
Stay tooned!
Stay tuned!
-
Everyone should be looking....

Oh....yes it is a nuance that I missed.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......well nice is as nice does. I guess then your baseball hats will all be either dusty or bent out of shape DRFRANCOIS....tragique!
I don't wear baseball hats!
My friend MM does!
He's always wearing one on every pic they print of him!
Who's MM, you say?
You know! Not Mickey Mouse!
The only dusty things I like are .... spring fields! :)
And I like my Gere ... bent! :o
Tragique?
No!
Très chic, oui!
Oh, the men in white are here to get me!
I keep tellin them that it's a hat, it's a hat... but they don't believe me!
I need air....
-
Everyone should be looking....
Look, look, look to the rainbow...
The loook of love is in your face...
Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee -- to quote Jrand from yesterday! --
Doesn't look like Kansas City anymore....
Ooooh, the men in white are takin' me away...

I wonder who's kissing her now!

François ;D- however, JRand what you said is nice, and so are you. :)
François you made me think of the following lyrics. I thought this song was great. The year was 1966 and I identified with the words just a little bit too much. ;D
They're coming to take me away, HA HA
They're coming to take me away, HO HO HEE HEE HA HA
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see
Those nice, young men
In their clean, white coats
And they're coming to take me away, Ha-haaa!
-
LOL FRancois!
-
You know what?
I'm happy!
-- oh, a Tex A. reference!
You know what?
I believe the men in white have taken away everyone from this site but me!
Zat izz tragique!

Now we know why Betty Hutton was so Peppy! 8)
Get Hep to Pep!
-
Thank G.d they left Jrand AND Jane behind!
-
And I'll be happy to see
Those nice, young men
In their clean, white coats
And they're coming to take me away, Ha-haaa!
Sung by a man that seems to be quite a gay song!! :D
-
Always liked Betty Hutton!
On this clipping, she looks -- in my eyes!! -- like a young Shirley Booth!
-
I also ALWAYS use BEXEL after handwashing my stuff!!
-
And all those years I thought Betty's pep was... her own!
-
Oh, but it says "guard your pep appeal!"
Nuance!
That word again!
-
Oh, thanks Noel for clarifying the meaning of some lyrics to PEOPLE!
I enjoyed getting the info.
-
Noel did your father receive credit for producing the series? I don't understand how it ended his career. What did your father do after he left the West Coast?
I don't quite understand it either...
I've no recollection of what credit my father received on Peter the Great. It might have been "Executive in Charge of Production" or simply "for NBC Productions."
After moving back east, my father has held no paying job. He managed to get himself elected to a school board, and he's written a number of opinion pieces and published a novel (which brought him no profit). For a time, he did a little reporting for a free local weekly newspaper - that paid him $20 per article, I think.
The harder question is why he thought he'd never get another job in Hollywood. As he explained it to me at the time, he was a certain age and had worked his way up to a certain salary level. Similar-salaried jobs were going to younger people, and while he might be happy to work for half the dough, potential employers wouldn't believe he'd be happy to work for half the dough. The scary part? The "certain age" he was when he said all this...

I didn’t want that to be my last post. ;D Our satellite was down and I couldn’t connect.
I’m a Betty Hutton fan-her energy was something else.
Noel, oh my-only 59! I hope he was happy in the east coast.
Good night all. No white coats here, I’m taking myself away. :D
-
Yes DR NOEL, very scary!
I think Betty's hair is very similar to Shirley's in that particular 1944 ad!
Wow! A collie dog who was being held at the animal shelter in Indianapolis, got out of his cage and ran down the hall to alert a worker about some smoke and fire in the animal compound!
-
Betty Hutton.....no middle ground with her.
DRJANE did you see her interview with Robert Osborne a couple of years ago on TCM? It was remarkable. She is not completely delusional - but she is emotionally damaged and will never recover.
-
She said she started her frantic moving around when she was with the Vincent Lopez Orchestra and completely unsure of her singing talent. She figured if she kept moving around, people would be distracted from her singing. She said: "I can't sing good, but I sure sing LOUD!"
-
For $634.52 you can buy a dress worn by Miss Betty Hutton in Incendiary Blonde! She must have been a stunner in this color!
-
Our satellite was down and I couldn’t connect.
Another double-entendre statement, Jane?
You just sound like Danise! :D
-
Written by Frank Loesser and sung by Miss Betty Hutton:
I wish I didn't love you so.
My love for you
Should have faded long ago.
I wish I didn't need your kiss.
Why must your kiss
Torture me as long as this.
I should be smiling by now
With some new tender friend.
Smiling by now
With my heart on the mend...
But when I try
Something in my heart says, "No.."
You're still there.
I wish I didn't love you so..............
-
Well the curtain has been up about 15 minutes on WHAT IF!
Hope everything is going well and the audience is tearing the roof off the Hudson Theatre!
-

She was always a very insecure person!
That used to drive Fred Astaire crazy, but then he did not have much patience with his partners, I believe!
Like BK, he was a perfectionist!
-
LOL....that one movie they did together wasn't the best either of them ever did. Pretty dumb story....and some really dumb dances as well.
-
Time for MAD Tv.....I will return.

LOL....that one movie they did together wasn't the best either of them ever did. Pretty dumb story....and some really dumb dances as well.
Well, then i'm glad I never saw it!
-
Time for MAD Tv.....I will return.
Here in France, it's just mad TV; one of the reasons i don't watch it!
We now get the French adaptation of that "Queer" "real" tv "gameshow"!
Welcome to the Americanization of Amélie (Poulain)! :D
Good grief! ::)

For $634.52 you can buy a dress worn by Miss Betty Hutton in Incendiary Blonde! She must have been a stunner in this color!
Hummmm.... I'll take 6 of them!
But I look better in blue! ;)
52 cents AGAIN????? ???

A good friend of mine was back from London this week where he saw Andrew Lloyd Webber's newest THE WOMAN IN WHITE. He liked it. He's not exactly an ALW fan and didn't think the music was as effective as the story being told. As for the score, he said it had the same tonal qualities as ASPECTS OF LOVE (which would make it a must-miss for me).
-
I was not highly impressed with the revised version of YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN. The revised arrangements on some of the original songs are ridiculous, losing the charm and simplicity of their meanings in a mess of choral enhancements. None of the new scenes, except one or two with the added Sally character, are especially noteworthy additions, and the first act especially just seemed to misfire in one segment after another.
Maybe this is a show whose time has come and gone. Slightly depressing for me because I can remember first seeing it and being filled with its charm and wonder. Very little of that was still present in this revised version. After seeing this, I had no doubt why it didn't succeed on Broadway with $90+ tickets.
-
Enjoyed FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT very much today, but darn if I didn't notice a continuity error early in the film. The pinkie ring that Joel McCrae is wearing before he gets in the cab and after he gets out of the cab is missing on his left hand while in the cab. Odd that I had never noticed this before.
Didn't have time to watch the documentary on the disc. I'll watch it tomorrow.

Yes, I think Nick Nickleby qualifies as a mini-series...It was 8-odd hours, show over several nights and was a television event.
In fact, I do believe it won the Emmy for best mini-series the year it premiered on PBS.
I number NN as one of my favorite mini-series. I also liked QBVII, Roots, The Thorn Birds, Shogun, Holocaust, I, Claudivs, and Lonesome Dove (also, its sequel, the name of which escapes me at the mo'.)
I couldn't get into Rich Man, Poor Man, mostly because of the way ABC began to cut it up into weekly hour long episodes.
I think the last miniseries I tried to watch was Stephen King's Storm of the Century, which started out as excellent but gradually spiraled into nonsense.
-
I thought I'ld join in on JRand's eBay scavanger hunt. This is what I found:
I feel cheap and dirty just looking at the cover.

Strange MATTH, I never noticed the ring....now I will have to look. Wasn't Gertrude a hoot? It was so strange to see her!
Sad to hear about CHARLIE BROWN, but I kind of felt the same way when I heard to new recording. I loved both CB and SNOOPY!!! - but maybe it was a different time....and as you know the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.
Thanks for that review Francois....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
-
DtM hmmmmmmmmm....yes maybe Betty will be next after Frances runs her course!
Oh my complete and unabridged....she certainly looks uncorseted!

I think I shall go on a paperback hunt....

Good Evening!
My closing night started off on a funny foot - at least for me...
Normally, I take the Metro and bus to the theatre, which usually ends up getting me there early - no later than 6:30 which is when the theatre opens. Well, today, Ryan - who is in the cast - was kind enough to give me a ride to theatre since he lives right around the corner from where I was staying. Well, we didn't leave until around 6:45.
As we were going up Highland, my cell phone rings... It's Dale, our stage manager. "Where are you? Are you all right?!?!?" -Apparently, my "tardiness" had caused some worry for Dale and for BK. All was well. I was just getting to the theatre a little later tonight that's all. And I walked into the theatre about three minutes after hanging up the phone. ;)
-
Last one! I think this is a mystery... :o
Written by that literary giant Billy Farout! :P
-
LOL JOSE - I know what you mean. I am always EARLY....and if I am on time, people think I'm late and wonder where I have been!
-
Now we need your show report, DRJOSE!
-
The closing show went very well. Good audience. Good performance. -And some nice Closing Night cards and gifts. :)
DR Panni took an "after" picture of me which she'll be posting later.
I decided to pass on the party since I'll be leaving for the airport in about five hours. Ah, well... I also just wanted to make sure I wasn't scrambling at the last minute to get my luggage together - which is what I usually end up doing. I just did some more packing, and it should take only about ten more minutes of redistributing items from one bag to another before I can zip them up.
Right now, I'm just taking it easy. Relaxing. And then probably a shower, and then, hopefully, a few winks of sleep. We shall see...
-
Man on the move......
As wonderful as the trip has been - I am sure it will be nice to get home!
-
-I'm actually a bit tired right now. I think "everything" that has happened over the past 11 weeks(!) is finally catching up with me. I'm just hoping my jet lag won't be too bad once I get back. I'm just thankful MAMMA MIA! starts on Wednesday instead of on Tuesday. *However, MAMMA MIA! is playing in Norfolk, and Hurricane Jeanne may be hanging around Virginia by then... And the tunnels in and out of Norfolk have a tendency to flood, so... Again, we shall see...
-
Man on the move......
As wonderful as the trip has been - I am sure it will be nice to get home!
I actually did have a wonderful time while I was out here. More wonderful than I ever thought it could be. It wasn't that I had a bunch of "excitement" while I was out here, but the "vibe" while I've been out here has been very positive. Catching up with old friends. Eating various foods. Exploring the city. Eating more food. Taking advantage of the MTA, the public transportation system. Eating even more food. Seeing some wonderful movies. Seeing some - well ONE really bad movie. Oh, and I can't forget to mention The Ten Commandments... ;)
There were a few days here and there where the homesickness did set in, but, all in all, L.A. felt like "home" while I was out here.
And I have to make sure and thank my friend, Chris, for not only housing me for a couple of weeks while I was out here, but for also helping out with the show with his work on the "Coming Attractions" audio. "Hey, would you mind recording some stuff for the show?" ;)
And another big Thank You to DR Jay for housing me during most of the run. I had a great time out in Pasadena, and I hope to get back to Old Pasadena sometime.
And Thanks again to all the DRs for their well-wishes for everyone involved with What If? I'm sure those patented Hainsie/Kimlet Vibes were a part of our success.
And, of course, last but not least, I have to Thank our very own BK for calling me, for trusting me, for taking the chance on me. I would not have made it out to L.A. and had such a wonderful overall time without you. Thank You.
-
Hmmm.... Now I'm hungry... Hmmm... Pie?!?!?!
-
I'm back. Enjoyed the show.
Dropped by DuPars for some food as I was starving. Read the New York Times while I ate a bowl of soup and a sandwich. Exciting night in the big city. Here are a few pictures as promised.
This is bk and his DD in the cafe before the show. The ambient light was low, so the quality is not great.
-
Panni in the cafe before the show - doing a Supergirl pose...
-
Oh!
I also want make to sure to acknowledge all the work that Tammy Minoff has done for the show. -And she still has some more work to get done in the next few days - *If you're in L.A. and want to help with the strike tomorrow...
Not only was Tammy in the show - learning, rehearsing and performing - she was also the producer for the show. Lots of wheeling and dealing, phone calls, e-mails, trouble-shooting(!), etc.
Although it was sad to see the show close (for now), it's good to know that Tammy will be getting part of her "life" back in a few days. She's been a true trouper.
-
The audience settling in before the show. You can see a bit of the black box set...
